I mean no one really pushes that. Not at least most of the good RU-vidrs (and it's easy to tell). The original BMPCC is all you need.

G.A.S. is the killer of great ideas! Yes new tech is cool, but we are too spoiled for choice now. Arri, Red, Sony Blackmagic, it doesn't matter if your ideas/script is rubbish, no one outside our of Instagram/RU-vid camera gear bubble cares what camera we shoot on, the only thing that will keep them from changing the channel is a good idea.

In my opinion a FX3 is really good enough but lens is very important. because it will make ALL the differences. Leica R is a very good choice

i still use my bmpcc 4k as my main camera 💚 i feel the main thing we need is to know our tool, and we know it by using it everyday for monthes, years... i feel like switching gear very often for little technical improvements is a big downside for practicing a craft

shot on everything from alexa to pocket cameras to crappy old digital cameras, and I can say easily that unless you are pixel peeping the sht out of your footage side by side, no one will notice the difference between a 50,000$ alexa and something like a bmpcc6k, given you are shooting correctly.

I don't think people realize how much experience you bring to this topic. I know that I have always wanted to be an owner/operator and Blackmagic has always been the sweet spot for quality image and affordability. I was shooting Magic Lantern Raw on the 5Dmk3 for a while until I switched to BMD. Sure I've had some cameras crap out on me, but the cost was so affordable, I was able to replace or repair without much hassle. The Ursa Cine, doesn't make much sense for A LOT of current Blackmagic users, unless renting, and having the latest and greatest will always pull people to a purchase (i.e. Burano). But really great insight! Love these bits of truth you call out.

Good point. I've had my BMPCC 4K for years now and love it. I want the PYXIS 6K but do I really need it? NO, so I'm looking forward to investing in a set of cine lenses (NiSi Athena); Easyrig and light, that's it.

I’m going NiSi Athena + PYXIS 6K. That being said, it would be my/our first non-rental camera, and I wouldn’t invest in it if we already had one.

Its all depend on the level of your work. In Virtual Production, we are waiting for M6 MBPro MAX, however, we may have to force ourself to work with upcoming M4 Mbpro max (lol). UE5 is a hungry beast...

Those 5Dmk2 reminds me of my filmmaking career until few years ago when i still shot on Canon 7Dmk2. I got my first cinema camera (BMPCC6K) in 2020, i still don't get it people complaining about the 13DR 🤦🏻

One aspect that I think about is the climate impact on all this gear being produced with minerals less the optimal gathered. FullHd is more than enough for the majority, dynamic range and global shutter is far more important. So the original Black Magic Cinema4k was almost there. Don’t get me wrong, gear is fun and Could be inspiering to have. But what are you shooting? Familyvideos, closeups of leafs and campfires? You are in a good place with any camera. I bought a used c200 kit for 1500€, it’s light, it’s fast, it’s fun! All that I need, more that I need? Yes. Far more than most of us need? Yes.

Me when the video has a photo of a dsmc 2 red, and “latest and greatest” in the same place lol But either way, my favourite camera I’ve ever used is the SR3, and that things from 1992, closely followed by the arricam LT which was released in 2000

Agreed, I have an Amira and honestly glad I have it but it’s limiting in movement..so end up using one of my smaller cameras..still love the Arri look and it has its place but for most jobs an FX3 or black magic would work just fine

We don't need any of this BS . Ppl out here making movies on Digital Bolex, OG Blackmagic Pocket and Cinema Camera 2.5K and the OG Arri Alexa , and OG Reds. Ppl gotta just get out and shoot, most these cameras in practice are all at a certain baseline.

I believe any camera with a 10 bit image can do the job. I have seen some great stuff with the old GH5...which I believe came out in 2018...

yup. Two minutes in... it is SUPER possible to make micro documentaries solo. I've been doing it for 15 years(like, as a full time business). The gear helps me achieve this, but it is not about that. My clients do not care what I use. Its about the end deliverable, and the result's that story gives them. If they trust you, your process, how you work to get that story done, that is what matters.

Sigma FP…severely underrated. On the used market averages $1000. Color science, image, form factor….amazing. Close to Arri image quality. I’d rather be a master of that camera, than buy a new camera that does everything for me.

I don't look at it as whether or not gear matters. To me, it's as simple as supply and demand and what your client is willing to pay for. If you're shooting Oppenheimer or Dune 2, Yes. Get an IMAX camera or an Alexa. But, if you're getting paid a couple hundred bucks to do a promotional video for a business, you may want to look at shooting that on something cheap whether you're looking to make profit or you may spend more if you're using it to market bigger clients. But you know, if you love just building rigs for a hobby, then more power to you, but, you might as well work some jobs to make your hobby more affordable. And also, if you get paid to review gear, more power to you also if you're getting paid to do so. If you're a consumer, just know what companies pay RU-vidrs to promote gear and they, just like you, are trying to make a living and that you should put some more thought into whether or not you should wait to buy a certain piece of gear. But no matter what walk of filmmaking you're on, nothing replaces getting out, and doing the work for yourself, turn the internet off for a while and get out and make beautiful video.

I own 7 cameras. Sony Z1U, Sony EX3, BMD's BMPC 4K, BMPCC OG, Ursa Mini Pro G1, GoPro 4 and OSMO Action camera v1. So my newest is the OSMO. When the EX3 came out camera tech was still evolving very quickly. I feel like it has slowed to a crawl today. Other than the Z1, I still use all of these cameras all the time (I record externally on the EX3 to get the 10 bit SDI signal). I have no reason or intention to upgrade any of these. They are all perfectly fine for media destined to go to an online platform.

NGL - would love a mini alexa but then I have to worry about having an Alexia and justify it. Now I can get pretty damn close to the Alexa for work and I can just have fun with what I have too. Just shot in NYC, Boston, San Francisco and everyone was thrilled with the footage. Win win.

Most people can tell the quality difference between something like Game of Thrones and say iPhone footage. For everthing in between, it's an even split between 'Can't tell' and 'Don't care'. Great video - needs to be said more!

Completely agree! I start to get distracted by all the new gear, then I come back to this truth. (shooting on BMPCC4k most of the time and then an old Sony Rx10ii and even cellphones, mostly doc work that is better to use low profile gear)

Agreed,. Just picked up a used URSA mini 4.6k, 15 stops Lossless Raw, etc., added this to my 6k pro,/4k cinema cameras. This makes the equivalent of a movie studio, with capabilities that were not possible nor practical for the indep. filmmaker, just a few short years ago.

I still shoot on 8bit and my consumer camera doesn't have any Log or RAW. So I struggle to get even a simple Rec.709. Because no working conversion LUTs exists. So yeah, I think, I need latest and greatest camera.

Pick up an old Canon and put magic lantern on there. I put ML on my 12 yr old mk3 to learn video and color grading. Been taking photos for years which helps you practice composition and seeing light and colors.

Cameras released in the past two years or so have been really powerful. It's getting to a point where newer cameras will start creeping up on the higher end production cameras usually reserved for feature film productions. The fact that the Sony FX3 was used to film a big budget science fiction film speaks to this. I'm at a point where the next camera I get will probably be fine for several years.

@@matteobertoli yeah definitely we are at the breaking point when for manufacturer coming up with better model becoming not worthy enough, because almost anyone who can afford a good gadget (camera, phone, laptop etc) has it already and it’s working fine more than just from one September to the next. So less and less people get introduced to the world of new gadgets (in a western world). There has to be different kind of value found in these times. However, for ADHD folks like me iPhone shooting RAW provides a great solution to simplify filmmaking process to the bone. 🤪

Huh the sensor of the 17k is almost as big as the Alexa 65. And the 12k and 17k cameras use different pixel and debayering patterns, so the 12K is as sharp as 8k. Bud blackmagic designed two great sensors for their flagships.
