Sandy Kreisberg, founder of HBSGuru.com, assesses his odds in this episode of Friday's With Sandy. Poets&Quants founder John A. Byrne suggests that because Zach does not have a prestige undergraduate degree and is below the class stats at Yale, Wharton and Chicago he apply to a different range of schools, including NYU Stern, UCLA Anderson, and UVA Darden to enhance his chances of success. That's because a 321 may still be a challenge for a white male in banking for Tuck and Fuqua. Read more here: poetsandquants...

Here is the reality of business school admissions. There are a limited number of spots and applicants are put in buckets based on race, gender and work experience/ industry. There are a lot of white men with a similar background to this young man applying to top business schools so he's in a very competitive bucket. If he were, for example, a military officer, then he might have better chances. Or if he were from a URM then he might have better chances as well. The same way there are many Asian men coming from engineering backgrounds applying to business schools and a limited number of spots. That is a very highly competitive bucket so applicants need higher stats to separate themselves.

When I applied to Goldman post undergrad, they asked for my SAT scores, and their hiring assessment was basically a mini SAT anyways. I have worked at several elite companies and if you can't take tests you just don't belong. Here is the real secret, do 5,000 GMAT questions and you will get 700+. I had a friend that did GMAT sample tests for 3 years before breaking 700, the old man is right buckle down and memorize GMAT questions so you don't even have to think when you are solving them. Your poise is impressive, a top 20 MBA is really all you need to become C level. Another idea would be to get a 1 year MS from a top program to show you only went to a non-target because of an athletic scholarship then apply to a 1 year accelerated MBA

I think the best option would be to go to a public institution. I would suggest University of Southern Indiana. The MBA is a 1 year program and the cost is only $12,900. Also it's without the major cost and it's AACBB accredited.

Horrible advice. That MBA is worthless for this guy’s career goal.
