Join me for an overview of my favorite brushes for watercolor! I'll demonstrate several different types of brushes, explain different brush fibers, and demonstrate how these brushes handle and what watercolor techniques they're great for! I'll talk about wonderful but pricey watercolor brushes I love, as well as budget watercolor brush options. I'll chat about the difference between synthetic watercolor brushes and natural hair brushes, and when each might be useful for your watercolor art and illustration. I'll also walk you through a few in progress watercolor illustrations and explain what brushes I'm using and how I'm using them to give you some context.

Great tip to work with the larger brushes first and go down to the smaller brushes for details. I really didn't know that, even though it seems to be common sense. Thank you!

Becca, I recommend any of the Mimik brushes from Creative Mark. They are reasonably priced and they have several kinds from synthetic squirrel to synthetic hog hair brushes. I have the Aqua Elite set as my high end brush recommendation, if your looking for more middle of the road Princeton’s line of velvet touch or heritage lines. My best brush is a Kolinsky red sable my Gran gave me before she passed away. She believed that you only need a good number 12 full/long belly brush! I need a good Mottler for sky’s. Gran might call me lazy for using one.

I tend to do florals & leaves, grasses and like tiny details so I've found a Cat's tongue brush works well for me when I want tiny lines at the ends and easy curves and leaves at re very easy with a Cat's Tongue. My fave brand Cat's Tongue so far is Silver Silk size 8.

Where did you find your red caps for hanging your brushes? These are brilliant, but elusive!

Hullo Becca, I am wondering about how you pronounce the Hake brush. Do you have experience in speaking or pronouncing Japanese? I have heard it most often as Ha Kay or With the ayy sound like rake or bake. How did you decide on your pronunciation? I have several similar brushes and I would like to see you create more videos showing how you use each one. What fibers or hair types do use or prefer? I know synthetic brushes have come so far since it was discovered how to make and assemble different diameter “hairs” the Silver Blacks are combination natural and synthetic fibers/hairs. I need to finish this video, just to see what else is going on, thanks.

Haw Ke is how I pronounce the word/ brush name…

Japanese is a bit like Spanish in pronunciation: letter A is “ah,”. Letter E is pronounced “A as in English word Hay”. Accent is on the first syllable, so the word “Hake” is pronounced “Hah’-Kay,” rhyming with English word “hay.” I hope this helps.
