Oh, well! I always thought that "i.e." meant "in example" coming from Latin. No one in college ever said anything about it, not even literature or history professors when writing essays. So, I'm in awe now! I wonder how many hundreds of language mistakes have fallen through the cracks of upper level education! Thanks for the clarifications!

Yep. Hey, English learners on this thread! Native English speakers can't tell the difference. It's just a few pedants who will notice at all. You can ignore them - most of the time 😉.

But surely, when speaking or reading, you don't say e.g. or i.e. or etc. but say the proper words, for example, that is and etcetera. At least, that's what I was taught.

Here’s how I learned and remembered it: “i.e.” is from latin “id est”, meaning “that is”; “e.g.” is the abbreviation for “example given”, or more colloquially “for example”.

I've never used these abbreviations incorrectly. First of all, I've never used e.g. at all, and you know it's impossible to use something incorrectly if you don't use it. And second of all, in my native language we have t.e. (to est, literally meaning "that is"), so it's basically the same thing as i.e.
