Do You Go to Hell If You’ve Never Heard of Jesus?

When considering the people of the Old Testament before Jesus's coming, we might ask ourselves: "Are those without the knowledge of Jesus destined for eternal damnation?"
And what about those who have never had an opportunity in our day and age to hear the name of Jesus and accept faith? "Where do they go when they die?"
Today, Fr. Mike explores these tough questions, drawing on the sacred scriptures and the church's teachings on salvation.

I was born and raised Catholic, but at 62 years old, have finally found my way back to God. Going back to church, learning how to do the rosary, and finally have faith, peace, and trust in God. I am currently doing the Bible in a Year podcast from 2021. It has been difficult because i have learning and memory problems, but i am not giving up. Thank God Father Mike explains it each day, or i would never understand it.❤

Fr.Mark Goring, also have this and he said you don't need to go for the exact 1 year! He also had times as days time-out, I don't remember what his reason was I think he had also the message it's not an issue a problem you know to do this in your let's say tempo. Maybe in RU-vid to see with the title: Fr.Mark Goring bible in a year.

@@lindaharper2870 yeah..there is the Bible and catechism and psalms and Gospel. Each every day as given in the plan. Example to read exodus part one from 1 to 30 than gospel beginning from the beginning to nr.20 than psalm 1 and than the first of the start of catechism. Second day...etc.I think I have that from fr.Mark Goring.

Allow your weaknesses and sins as Christ permits them to keep you humble as opportunities to keep turning to Him for his mercy. Remember, it is not so much our sins that hurt Christ as is our lack of trust in His Mercy. Sainthood and holiness I argue are not being undefiled by a perfect keeping of "the law", rather it is humbly admitting our need for God and his grace at every moment of our lives 🙏 God bless you

Glory to Jesus Christ, Glory Forever! I am so grateful I left Calvinism for the truth of the Catholic Church. Calvinism tries to have an answer for everything regarding soteriology and in so doing constructs a totally different God. Catholicism allows for the mystery of God and for hope alongside the truth that God desires all to be saved, and it's our job as Christians to spread this good news!

8:23 reminds me of this verse: ““Now, son of man, I am making you a watchman for the people of Israel. Therefore, listen to what I say and warn them for me. If I announce that some wicked people are sure to die and you fail to tell them to change their ways, then they will die in their sins, and I will hold you responsible for their deaths. But if you warn them to repent and they don’t repent, they will die in their sins, but you will have saved yourself.” ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭33‬:‭7‬-‭9‬ ‭NLT‬‬ The greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, strength and might and love our neighbour as ourselves. To love God is to truly care about the things He cares about and our brothers and sisters that He loves sooo much that He died for on the cross. God does not rejoice at the death of a sinner and he wants all people to be saved. Therefore, out of love more than any obligation, we should strive to tell people the GOOD NEWS and make them friends with God. “All this is done by God, who through Christ changed us from enemies into his friends and gave us the task of making others his friends also.” ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭18‬ ‭GNBDK‬‬

I've seen that mountain metaphor a lot. Interesting to see it applied in a different and more profoundly shocking way. We can climb as high as we can, we can become near perfect human beings, and still have no power to reach God. Only he can come to us. Thanks for updating this metaphor and giving us a better way of thinking about it.

I appreciate the distinction made here between an organized religion and the way revealed through Jesus. There is a huge difference that we all must remember and put into perspective. There is no religion that is perfect, they are merely frameworks to work within. Jesus’ truth and sacrifice, however, reigns above all groups and labels we put ourselves in. I am a Catholic not because I think the religion is perfect, but because the framework of Christ’s original Church is something that I believe is very valuable. We are all sinners and imperfect, that includes the people within our Church. Let us always be humble and remember this. Through grace and God’s mercy we are saved from our choice of sin.

If you are afraid, pray that you may not have to go before God at the end of your life to tell Him you neglected to share His truth with one of His little ones, who may never know Gods love in life, or possibly after. It’s never easy and I promise it’s almost always just a little awkward to invite someone to Mass or an event, but there is nothing more rewarding (and humbling) to see how God uses you to transform lives.

1 John 4:7-12: Beloved, let us love one another because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten of God and has knowledge of God. The person without love has known nothing of God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed in our midst in this way: he sent his only Son to the world that we might have life through him. Love then, consists in this: not that we have loved God, but that he has loved us and has sent his Son as an offering for our sins. Beloved, if God has loved us so, we must have the same love for one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet if we love one another, God dwells in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us.

ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II: “The universality of salvation means that it is granted not only to those who explicitly believe in Christ and have entered the church. Since salvation is offered to all, it must be made concretely available to all. But it is clear that today, as in the past, many people do not have an opportunity to come to know or accept the Gospel revelation or enter the Church. The social and cultural conditions in which they live do not permit this, and frequently they have been brought up in other religious traditions. For such people salvation in Christ is accessible by virtue of a grace, which, while having a mysterious relationship to the Church, does not make them formally part of the Church but enlightens them in a way which is accommodated to their spiritual and material situation. This grace comes from Christ; it is the result of his Sacrifice and is communicated by the Holy Spirit. It enables each person to attain salvation through his or her free cooperation.”

Fr. Mike why don’t we bow our heads and close our eyes any more when we hear or say Jesus. Granted I was raised in the dark ages, before V. II, but still love and respect wasn’t wiped out like other things were. Most foreign priests bow but most American priests don’t. Why????

I think that is more for during Mass only, but I'm not sure

@@blaiseaimee7098 the way I was taught no matter where we are and no matter when we always bow our head when we say or hear the word Jesus.

I desperately have a doubt please answer it father ,if I am in mortal sin yet say a perfect act of contrition , resolving to go to confession still there is no grave reason for me to receive the eucharist except I want to receive (but preceding is repentance towards my sin) am I doing the right thing or am I committing mortal sin

You can’t take the Eucharist if you’re not in a state of grace.. you need to go to confession and absolve all sins before taking it or it’s considered another sin

If the heart desires God, but the body dies without the individual ever knowing God, does God still fulfill the desire of the heart to know God after the body dies? According to Jesus, the one who hungers and thirsts after righteousness has a blessing of being filled. But can that blessing occur for the soul after the body has died? If the blessing is for the soul and not the body, it would seem irrelevant that the body had died when the time came to bless the soul.

The Catholic Church has the best theology & view of "salvation" of all mainstream Christian churches. But even the Catholic Church has a grossly incomplete and shallow view of what the Logos is and the actual process of salvation.

Good evening Fr Mike. My name is Magdalene from Singapore🇸🇬a tiny little country in South-East Asia which is multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-religious. I have 2 questions I hope you can help me with: What about someone like Mahatma Gandhi who advocated non-violence and ascetic self-sacrifice, yet who told the Christians of his time - I love your Christ but do not respect you Christians. Something like that. The story goes that once in his youth, Gandhi tried to enter a church in England but was barred from doing so, and worse yet, insulted by a pompous so-called white Christian. That incident was what turned him off Christianity for good. I should think the one who refused to give him that chance to know Christ, just because of his skin colour, would be far more culpable. The list could go on and on, I suppose, even for the founders of the great Eastern religions who lived and died before Christ, yes, like Buddha and the founders of Sikhism, Jainism, the Dalai Lana, etc. Just wondering what your thoughts would be on this. Thank God and bless you, Father.

No he didn’t because he didn’t die for those who have been damned like protestant’s for example.

@simonslater9024 That is very ungracious to our Christian family! As a Catholic, we want to see unity after all followers of Christ. Statements like that do not nurture and build unity. 😞

Jesus died for all our sins, but only if we receive Jesus, love Him and sincerely ask for forgiveness. Then we need to seek to know Him through the church He established through His Apostles, and seek to be Holy, recieve Him through the Eucharist, and live as He wants us to.

@@simonslater9024 you cannot declare someone to be damned, that is sinful. ONLY God can judge someone's heart and define their eternal fate.
