I get this kind of attitude from all my riding buddies who refuse to make the switch, or worse yet, refuse to even give an e-bike a go. The irony is that now I'm the one who is riding all the time - literally all the time. And as a result, I'm the one who has improved my fitness in the last 18 months, including being down 20 lbs that I couldn't seem to lose all the years on my standard mtb. This guy illustrates the typical joyous reaction we all had once we decided to just let go of our e-bike bias... Uphill Is the new downhill (if you're on an e-bike). Love this video!

A lot of people think if they get an e-bike they will lose their leg strength and won’t be able to pedal acoustic bikes anymore. So they don’t wanna even try. Others calls us lazy riders especially if we are not at a retirement age. I love it when people are open minded and not judgmental about what they assume on why we ride them. If you travel at the same pace on an ebike as a mountain bike eventually your leg strength and cardio performance will decrease and you will no longer be able to pedal a mountain bike as well. So it looks like people are right. You could always travel faster on your ebike by putting in the same or greater effort though😊 It's what I intend to do.
@eugenux

it doesn't give you the same workout and muscle as a normal bike unless you are using it in eco or tour modes, at which point, what's the fun in it. Plus, a full electric bike is slower(not by much, having more inertia and responding slowly to rider inputs) on the downs than comparative normal bikes but, as soon as the trail gets a slightly incline section, even if for 50-100 meters and the slope is mellow... you will leave normal bikes in the dust, with zero impact in your heart rate.. while the ppl on normal bikes, if they keep pushing, will be at 180bpm gasping for air. I can tell you this for certainty because I've ridden both normal and electric bikes on the same 25 mile piece of over mountain trails and it is way more easier and faster with the e-bike... but, as soon as the trail goes down, I'd rather be always on my normal bike, the inertia and slow handling make it for me very difficult to take the plunge. Ebikes are also much more expensive, require much more maintenence and consumables parts get used up faster; but, it is a rather enthusiastic prospect to get a 7 mile long downhill trail head with enough energy and stamina that would make you believe you left the car park 1 hour ago, than feeling like you are on the reserves, preparing and trying to combat mentally the exhaustion of 3600 ft of climbing in 18 miles and 4-5 hours of riding at 6000ft altitude. You can enjoy much more the downs, knowing and feeling more "up to the task". Having said that, at cable asist trails or bike-parks, full electrics are pigs that are less fun than their normal counterparts. What seems to bridge the gap are the mid power ebikes, the new levo sl being one of the greatests examples.. the s-works version managing to be one bottle of water heavier than my nuke giga with a build focus on the downs(dh tracks). That's why, for those like me, who like the feel and feedback(handling) of normal bikes, the prospect of a future kenevo SL 1.2 is rather endearing. For those to think mtb-ing is just a form of recreation, then look no further than ebikes. They have been invented for ppl like you(lazy who want the good, nice rides without having to train for those said rides and are happy pushing a bike at 7, maximum 8 out of 10. It is what it is, assume it and enjoy your mountain biking activity.
@pho_bowler
@pho_bowler Год назад
Well said, couldn’t agree against it until you said “people lazy like you” at the end. 🤣 I still have my pedal bike and do plenty of climbing in a week so I feel the burn along w/ the second/ 3rd wind we need on those steep climbs. I go back and forth so I can get more out of the Kenevo SL. Focusing more on the DH so I can improve on the local trails. Knowing I can ride and a comfortable pace with more confidence is key to staying healthy. Climbs always have a nice reward at the end but I like to push even harder on the down hill while saving the legs with a bit less energy on the climbs when I do choose to take the Super Light bike out for a spin. Taking my Kenevo Sl to the max elevation and miles I can get out of the little 360wh battery and trying to achieve more always sets the bar high while feeling the burn and heart rate of a normal pedal bike. Cadence is key. If used properly from what I never had before I rode an ebike, heart rate is controlled on what your heart desire and wills for! Cheers! ( to the lazy people like me who switches back and forth on a normal bases )

@@SamsBikes I agree with Aeons and I know Sam also does but what I propose (and how I explain them to my ebike hater friends) is to not compare them directly as emtbs can do what regular bikes can't. Comparing what an emtb can do on a fireroad is definitely a great metric to show you can manage your heart rate and use it as a non stationary trainer but when you are put to the test on a steep techy climb that even turbo is struggling is what it's at. The emtb shines where you're hike a biking and where you really push your fitness because you're forced to. Which is obviously a whole subset of testing. So while I'm thrilled you were able to show it's benefits this way. I think you should do a few intense climb challenges with him in a future video. Where you're absolutely pushing the machine to it's limits. Great video Sam! Hopefully more like this soon!

LiveAeons... let's compare it with sports cars because, well, everyone understand cars. The full enduro normal bike is that porsche gt car.. fast on a race track, fast on a road, fast everywhere, reliable and with a good racing pedigree. A full power ebike is that all wheel drive, 4 seats, convertible, a bmw 8 series convertible xdrive..., still quite fast, very easy to control, very easy to drive and safe even for untalented drivers. mid power ebikes are like a ferrari spider.. still capable on track, very capable on road but just a little compromise for pure performance when you compare it with that porsche gt. Whatever you prefer to drive(read ride), it is up to you but, please don't invent lies about it. It is what it is and ebikes are what they are... nothing less, nothing more.

I was a hater 😂. My son is a gamer who didn’t like mtb riding with me because of the climbing. I bought us 2 turbo levos, he now enjoys going for our rides together. I usually keep it in eco mode, and try to keep up with him in trail mode. My HR stays up, I ride further and faster. The main thing I realized is I am smiling more on the E bike. I also found on a recent camping trip- exploring is more fun on the E because if I get lost or out there I always have some help to get back. On a recent trip there is an area with 4 different downhills. Most acoustic riders are tapped out after doing 2 of them, we hit all 4. Nice to have the suspension as well and not have to “carry” it up, hit more jumps. Some days when not feeling it, the e bike helps to get me out more.

that's relative perspective and factually not true. One intense/hard hour on a normal bike gives you much more training and fitness than 1 hour on a ebike. Sure, it is better than nothing but giving you fitness more than the equivalent non-electric counterpart, that's fake "news", sorry. and, beside my own experience with both(Es and non-Es), I have a friend who opened up a guest house for 12 ppl at the mountains and offerd for the guests guided tours on ebikes. After one year, of riding pretty much every day(not so in the winter), when he tried to make the usual 3 mile and 1300 ft to the popular trail head on a normal bike, he barely(and very slowly) managed to make it; he also got like 20 pounds heavier in that time, even with all the big mileage he has done on his electric bikes. When he realised what has happened, he got back on his normal bikes, doing the same trails, climbs and exploration type of riding that he did on ebikes and he has never been fitter or stronger. He still does tours for lazy unfit ppl who want to be taken up to mountains but he makes sure he is doing 3-4 normal bike rides for each ebike ride. He has become so fit and strong that at the beginnig of his 40s, he has the body aspect of a 20 year old climber - lean and full of muscle, plus the very high lung capacity - so, again, ebikes are very fun and have many advantages (for me, it is the arriving at the trail head feeling like I've just left the car park); being better for your fitness and training they are not, with the exception of getting you out of the house and ride, where the normal bike does not encurage you to do that when you are unfit and lazy.

@@eugenuxmy theory is I live by my riding area and ride consistently steep uphill Forrest roads to access DH tracks so can keep the work rate up while in full power mode and no power on the downs I imagine it would be easy to lose condition trail riding and riding with people of a lesser fitness or on non E. I just hope my body can handle the amount of dh it's about to get.

I find that any ebike newbs that I let ride, I reduce the shuttle down to 0-20%, as the overrun tends to be something that takes getting use to. Also, I don't give them full power, usually stick around 60, maybe 70% at the highest. The biggest challenge by far, is getting riders use to "spinning" the pedals, and not trying to power through the pedals like they would on a analog bike.
@emed1977

It went together easily in less than an hour. ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

Working out too hard doesn't translate to a good workout. Spiking power too high and red zoning isn't conductive to raising your power. First is the amount you ride and ebikes allow you to do that. This is why long term mountainbikers never develop any power.

I love the, what I call, "hybrid haters" in the comments--they own and ride e-bikes themselves, but they still have to justify it with "I use it to train on off days" or "As long as you mix in unassisted rides" or "Analog bikes are faster in corners", blah blah. Some of us don't give a flip about training, or suffering or whatever, we're not masochists like you. If you want to be a masochist and eat raw eggplants and keto or whatever and get swole, go nuts, but leave me out of it. I've ridden bikes since before some of you were a twinkle in your daddy's eye. That said, I'm not recovering from an injury, I'm not weak, I'm not lazy, I'm not disabled, I just like e-bikes, period. I ride e-bikes, and have always ridden bikes more generally for 3 reasons: to commute from point A to point B; to have fun; and to reduce car trips, because now I can haul up to 200-300 lbs. of stuff on the right bike (my bike truck vs. my XC). You can't cheat at transportation, fun or doing your part for the environment, sorry. I used to use it for a 4th thing, exercise, but it always felt like a chore, like going to the gym (gyms are effing lame). Now I just do the things I want on a bike, and the exercise happens incidentally. You've purchased an e-bike, but you're still self-flagellating about it. What's the point? If you're going to do that, just sell your e-bike and go back to your unassisted bikes. You don't have to justify it. You don't have to mix in analog rides. You can if you want to, but you don't have to. It's street legal, just ride it and STFU. It's actually okay to have fun riding a bike. A cycling purity tac team isn't going to rappel in and take your e-bike away because you're having too much fun. When you were a kid, did you ride your bike to get your Strava numbers up? Hell no; you were just having fun. The exercise is a thing that just happened while you were having fun. E-bikes take us back to that.

I am 54 and in great shape.I bought a EMTB 2 months ago and love it. I can do absolutely massive amounts of climbing and descending and get a awesome workout. I would over do it sometimes on the analog bike. I can keep my heart rate a little lower. I still ride my analog bike hard one day and do two days of zone 2. I ride the EMTB one day a week for a big ride. I can do 7,000 feet of climbing and descending in 3 hours. So much fun. Still love my hard tail but no more big pushes on the analog bike.

The vast majority of the moaning that I see online comes from ebikers moaning about mountain bikers allegedly hating ebikes. In reality the vast amount of moaning from mountain bikers that I see online is based around cheats on ebikes who keep recording on the mountain bike section of strava. All of the segments in my area have ebikers in the top ten, it's ruined a good bit of sport. Why do they do it? They do it because they want the kudos of being classed as a fast mountainbiker, not an ebiker. I'm about to move to an ebike and when I do I will no longer class myself as a mountain biker. Ebikers should move on as will I, it's a different sport and comparing apples with apples it is obviously easier, the science says so, it's not an opinion! Yes you can still put the effort in but you get a lot more in return. I think the fun factor will be higher so that's a big plus for me but the sense of satisfaction and achievement will never be the same with a motor doing a large part of the work. People have never bought an ebike because it's harder have they? Strava need to set things up better for ebiking, I'm looking forward to putting in some times on trails and comparing them to my mountainbiking times, all of them will be faster on an ebike,

There is no such thing as cheating unless you're racing lol. Is it cheating if you decide to ride a XC bike, or a carbon bike vs an old single speed steel frame? I guess, if that is your mind set. In all honesty, everything in this life is a balance. You give up a bit of your legs power output to do more riding. You could argue that you're cheating yourself by spending more time climbing that descending, or having to hike a bike sections that could really push you and make you a better more technical climber.

You missed the part where E bikes are as much of a work out as you make it. You just go faster and further, and ride trails an acoustic bike has to be pushed up. E bike is not like riding a motorcycle. I have an 890R KTM I ride alot, nothing like an E bike.
@EK-xk7zt
@EK-xk7zt Год назад
@@bradsanders6954 It is absolutely not as much of a workout, as admitted by Brett at 7:55 mark of the video. He said he would be way more shattered after an analog ride. You can though make an e-bike ride a really good work-out by turning off e-assist. I saw an e-bike rider who ran out of battery and climbing the same hill next to me. He was grinding, sweating and breathing hard. That is a work-out! Every single e-biker I have seen passing me uphill so far, they did so without a sweat like riding casually on a flat rec trail, when I was working my ass off. The sheer concept of the motor makes people lazy. I guess you can make an e-bike ride harder by pushing harder, never as hard as an analog bike though. I have just not seen that guy yet. And I saw hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands e-bikers in the wild. But again, do what suits you. To be clear, I am not against e-bikes, I have no negative feelings about them. I am just saying it is a whole different animal.
@streddaz
@streddaz Год назад
@@EK-xk7zt you might say the same thing about someone with gears not doing it as hard as a rider on a single speed. You can make it just as hard as a single speed but everyone choses to pick and easier gear to ride in. No different to an Ebike. I have gained fitness with an Ebike because I ride more than just on my normal bike. I can choose to make it as hard or as easy as I want. I even ride it will zero assistance if I'm riding with other non-Ebikes, then I get more of a workout as I'm pedalling a bike that's around 5kg heavier than them.
@EK-xk7zt
@EK-xk7zt Год назад
@@streddaz You are a unicorn among e-MTBers. A lot of e-bikers make the same argument about fitness etc., but I haven't seen one e-biker in my life that drips sweat or breathes hard. Having gears is just leverage, and there are advantages and disadvantages to single speed bikes. In some scenarios, they may even be faster and more suitable than geared ones. Single speed bikes are a good 2-3lbs lighter for one. Gears are not a motor. A motor is a motor. With battery and motor tech advancing so fast, we will have bikes with more and more power and juice, turning pedals will be like turning the steering wheel on one those merry-go-round cars. If electric bikes help your fitness, more power to you, literally. Whatever propulses your bike, man, just enjoy. It is all good.
@streddaz
@streddaz Год назад
@@EK-xk7zt it’s like anything, if you want to be lazy you’ll be lazy no matter what. I mainly bought my Ebike so I can rider further and longer than I could on a normal bike, not so much to get up hills easier. I agree that there’s a lot of Ebikers out there that would only be riding because of an electric bike and would never ride unassisted. At least it’s a lot more exercise than sitting on the couch. I still ride my normal bike, just depends how I’m feeling or who I’m riding with.
