The tradition of clinking glasses dates back to the Middle Ages, and WAS proper etiquette.... until the 20th century, when the custom became SO commonplace that "polite society" deemed it beneath them. After all, if shopkeepers and farmers were clinking glasses, the nobility certainly couldn't be caught doing it!

Clinking glass together dates back to the middle ages. Poisoning your drinking buddy was common. A hard clink often spilled liquid from both glass into one another drink. It was to show you had nothing in those drinks. Eventually, drinking mugs have change. And poisoning isnt common anymore. That means that the etiquette has changed.
