You know you have GAS when you're buying multiple copies of the same guitar -- just because they're different colors.

Hey, that's totally okay to do if it's a perfect guitar for you, but you should put different pickups in the different models

Phillip McKnight I have the syndrome for similar reasons, my first show was KISS and idolized acdc as a kid, I just looked at music as larger than life, and guitars like the sg and les paul to be not only a symbol of confidence, but of identity. We all have our favourite, and generaly, their guitar is part of who they are. We are forcefed to believe you need to spend thousands to play the big stages...we are also sometimes thinking about these un important things while we make a purchase. the lesson id like to share with you guys is that technology has come a very long way, and im starting to find by doing my research that there are guitars out there that have many or all the features I need, that can emulate some features in other guitars I may want in the future. so the lesson, is to do your research like phil said. I would be happy with one sg for the rest of my life if it did everything I wanted it to, and im finding there are models now to try that are cheaper than the standard that do coil tapping, 15 db boost, circuit, forward thinking pickup configs, even the mini tune looks worth giving a shot. (talking about the Gibson sg futura) if that guitar is as good In real life as on paper, they can have my money for once, and I will be done with gas. the end. think about it guys, one guitar that looks like your dream shape, but does everything, you can find it, its out there. happy hunting! (couldn't comment normally for some reason so I had to reply)

I must admit that I've used that one before. Now the way I control myself is when I buy something new, I get rid of something of similar value/size/price. That way I only make a move when I really want something over something else. It's also quiets the wife off cuz she knows I'm not getting more stuff in the house. Once in a while tho I sneak something in without getting rid of anything but I feel proper guilt.

Lol that's funny. After seeing this I'm so glad I never got married! Gf's will bug me about buying so many videogames, but I've never had them say anything about my gear... whether that's bc I'm a professional musician so they understand, or bc they instinctively know I'll leave them if they start, who knows? Lol, I'm just glad I've never had to deal with it :-))

My G.A.S. has been in remission. I started taking lessons again and then started watching youtube lessons and then found your channel and now my GAS is back and it is more dangerous than ever. I try to time my online purchases so that they arrive on the days my wife works. The pedal side effect has just recently reared it's ugly head. I have ordered a Holey Board to try to control it but I think that it has only made this worse. I have to cut this short, there was just and accident outside in front of my house. The UPS truck with my Tubescreamer on it just ran into the fedex truck with my new Bassbreaker 45. I have to go and sign for both items after checking for damage. I'll see you all at the clinic!!!! Do I get a shout out Phil?

There's a saying, "want what you've got," so I really enjoy looking up reviews and videos where people are using my gear. I then remind myself that my gear will not write lyrics, compose, arrange, and track for me.

Fortunate enough to have a significant other that just laughs at me whenever I come home with another piece of gear! The compulsion to collect gear dovetails with your video on taking lessons or teaching yourself - it motivates me to play. I used to get bored with just one or two guitars and would go months without practicing. With 10 or 15 guitars to choose from, there's always one calling to me.

Our used market up here does indeed value a case with a guitar. It seems your used market is much different to the one's I've been in. For the used market I'm in, a case is absolutely a big deal. It's an easy $60-200 depending on the case. Also, there's more to be had if the case is original. A guitar without a case, especially an expensive one, is a big red flag for me. I won't go near a guitar over $500 without a case. A case is often the difference between one guitar being sold over the identical guitar without a case here. It's interesting that your experience is different. Great video:-)

For me it's actually Gear Acquisition Syndrome as it pertains to guitars, pedals (especially), and amps. Unfortunately my income doesn't support me in this venture. However, occasionally I get to indulge my GAS. Here's the kicker though...my wife is usually the one talking me into doing it. She knows how much I love my gear, and periodically I'll mention something I've found that is so cool that it has me all excited. Usually I'll also mention some expensive alternative that does this or that, or there's this cheaper thing that does the same thing, or close to it. She then tells me I should get it since it just eat me up inside if I don't. My latest bit of GAS landed me two small Fender tube amps and a solid state Fender amp, for practicing guitar, and come the first of the month I'm going to get one of the Fuzz pedals I want. I cheated the system by flat telling her about the items, in great detail, and throwing out as much technical jargon as possible. I genuinely get excited about these things to the point her eyes glaze over, and she probably doesn't want to hear my voice for awhile.

Thanks for all your brilliant videos. I guess I,ve got GAS. Each time I buy a new guitar I convince myself it will take my playing to the next level and it sort of works, but not as well as I hoped. But as I am in the Squier , Epiphone price range it doesn,t cost me a fortune, and I end up with some nice guitars which I am really happy with. Once again thanks for all the vids.

People shop more when they are miserable but than regret the money spent and get more miserable. I used the same Les Paul for maybe at least 12 years. I was tired of it and the other 2 guitars I have acquired. I made some mistakes while getting the "wrong" guitars for me. Now my go to guitar is an simple version of Ibanez and I feel great about it. My other 2 guitars are acoustic Ibanez and hollow body electric Ibanez. I decided three guitars are the right number for me. I don't have the best guitars but they are just fine.

My GAS can only be cured when I have acquired a late 80s Steve Vai Jem with swirly paint job and pyramid inlays, a late 80s Jackson V, a Gibson Les Paul that looks exactly the same as the one in the Sweet Child of Mine video, a Gretsch that Chet Atkins might have played, a vintage looking tele that I find on a trip to Nasville and an incredibly cool private stock PRS that hasn't been invented yet. Oh yes, and another early 90s Ibanez or Jackson which must have shark tooth inlays). Although my new Dave Murray MIM 3 humbucker strat with a floyd rose is helping my condition there could be a relapse at any moment. I'd like an Yngwie strat as well actually.

2:35 I have been working on this plan for a while now! I have identified a guitar I'd like to buy and I'm fairly sure my partner won't initially notice it when it appears in place of the older one which will be put in the case. I just need to prepare for the 'Oh how much did it cost?' when it is inevitably noticed

My wife didnt want me to buy a new guitar, Im still going to but later, so I joined a guitar building class and it was much easier to convince her to let me buy replacement parts for the cheap shit that came in the kit. Plus, Im upgrading my Ibanez to Dimarzios and putting the ACH 1 and 2 into the build. Win, win, win. Going to have 3 guitars and new humbuckers in my main guitar by the end of the year.

New guitar player here, already have GAS, lol. Basically, I'm too lazy changing between tunings and like the sound of different guitars. I have 3 guitars right now, 1 in Drop D, one in Drop C, and last in Drop B, built one for my sister and use that for E standard, and in the middle of building another for myself that will be in Drop A most probably or C standard. I want at least one guitar for each tuning... then once I have that, I'll find another reason to keep buying/building guitars, lol!

My husband loved that I kept buying guitars because it made/makes me happy! He'd ask me about each one, what was special about it, etc. Ultimately, he knew I then couldn't say doodle squat about his camera purchases! Worked for me!

I've been noodling with guitars coming on 3 years now. Last August, had a total of 16 guitars in house, 13 amps and we'll over 30 pedals. I've since narrowed it down to 8 guitars, 7 amps and around 15 pedals, although I keep finding them in various hidden places, lol. I'm getting better, but it's hard to resist that new acquisition feeling, the "kill" per say.

Not true, my friend. I can tell you that after medical and everything I barely break four digits a month on my cripple check, and I spend about six or seven hours a day on average scouring the internet for guitars to flip so that I can sock away enough to buy another guitar, pedal, or parts here and there. My lack of funds causes me more problems than buying the gear would. Right now, I'm about halfway to buying that Xaviere XV-550 I want because I just don't want to wait and save up for a real Epiphone Florentine. I am honestly glad you're coping well, but I think I might be getting driven crazy enough for both of us!

It kind of makes me sad to think of some of my guitars not getting played enough, but I definitely have this problem. I just bought 2 guitars, A PRS Custom SE and a Baja Telecaster. I used 2 accounts that I direct deposit into to pull the cash. My guitars are in the basement and my wife knew I had guitars, but I don't think she knew how many. It helped that the new guitars came in gig bags.

Here's a GAS story. I'm a lefty who just started playing year and a half ago. I got an Epiphone LP 100 to learn on. It went good. The LTD EC 1000 FM (the amber one with the seymore duncans) caught my eye, and I started stashing 20 bucks back a week. This was last october. I told her about it. What I didn't tell her was that I only put half of my Christmas bonus in the bank, and that I cashed out my perfect attendance bonus from work. I bought it on Jan 25th. If she did the math she would be like "$900 guitar, 20 bucks a week for 4 months... this doesn't add up." But I think she accepted it. But now I'm ready to upgade my Peavey Vypyer to an Orange CR120 and 2x12. She wasn't as accepting and told me I have a sickness, lol.

I'm just glad that guitar companies and other gear companies don't make what I really want at reasonable prices. I would would be living in some fleabag motel and begging on the street. Like the new Elite Strat. Who buys a $2000 guitar with a plastic ('synthetic' bone) nut, string trees and a mammoth plastic case with plastic locks ? And ugly colors? And no hardtail version available. Better men than me I'm sure. Who still buys Gibsons since PRS fixed the problem with straight pulled strings and why? Self lubricating huts have been around for a long time. Why are they not on every guitar made when they are so cheap? I used to rent gear in the 90s to get my fix. It cost next to nothing compared to buying gear. Pittsburgh has a great store in Blawnox that rents all kind of gear, guitars. etc. That was a blast.

I "accidentally" bought a Fender acoustic during a science class...I pressed "buy now" before I could think too much about the purchase. I've walked into GC on multiple occasions looking for only a pack of strings and ended up walking out with a guitar instead. I've received a paycheck that I forgot I had coming and thought "since I forgot I had this coming, rather than be happy I have the 'extra,' or really forgotten money, I'll buy a guitar." I've made awful trades just to get the thing I wanted in the moment. I'm only 18 and I barely have a job...hah oh man.

The point about being miserable is right on. Retail therapy. Been there done that in my first marriage. I made a good bit of money then. The way I think about it now is that the guitar should fit a certain need. For example, I have not been looking to purchase a new guitar up until a few weeks ago. I wanted a single pick up guitar because I feel I handicap myself with two. I also feel that I am truly at the point where I can truly start to use the inboard controls to milk all the tone out of the guitar. I didn't have a guitar with single coils, so I opted for the gibson les paul jr. This will be number 3 in the stable currently.

I'm up to 50 not counting a dozen my son has "borrowed". In my case, many of them are lower end (for the time) 60s guitars for the same reason of adolescent cravings. Mine have all appreciated in value, I only have 2 or 3 that I don't play. The rest go into play rotation, but a few stay out all the time. I've been collecting for 30 years. Wife plays any instrument "twice as better than I will" and has several guitars, too.

my fiancee is pretty much the best. she is a rare gem and since September. of last year I've spent thousands on tube amp guitars and boutique pedals and she has actually helped me finance this. After 17 years I wanted to finally have pro level gear and she actually understands. so much so that I'm the one starting to feel guilty and the rest of my Analogman pedals, new pedaltrain board voodoo labs power supply and my bassman and/or hot rod deville 4×10 will have to wait lol. I know these stories are supposed to be funny but I needed to chime in and stand up for my girl because she is the best and not just because of this. So, for me, my GAS is going to have to be alleviated for a while!

I want to say this: Check all electric guitars you can put your hands on and than buy the one that you love the most and fall in love with it. If you are happy with your love and you still look for something "better" you have mental problem. I know some people will tell me to fuck myself but this is not going to change their problem. I feel tempted sometimes too but I have bills to pay and my heart breaks thinking how I am going to blow away another few hundred dollars so I don't.

I used to have bad motorcycle gear acquisition syndrome. BM GAS? I don't have much time to ride anymore, so I've been selling them off. I'd rather have the money in the bank appreciating instead of rusty bikes depreciating. But now it seems every time a bike leaves, two guitars and maybe an amp show up. The good thing is they take up a lot less space. The bad part is, that space is now in the bedroom or living room instead of the garage.

I don't know if anyone said this yet but I think I have A.A.S. If you can see my profile icon is an uncovered head that is an Industrial Amps Overdrive 15 and I found it at guitar center for 750 and needing to play it as soon as I saw it, I asked the staff and they tried to find the right power cord as it wasn't the standard kind for amps it was a weird heavy duty extension cord, but after weeks of asking them if they could find it, and trying to find any kinds of reviews or specifications on it was bare. All I could find was on their website, they were selling them for $2050. Immediately I knew either this amp has an insane value or there's something really wrong with it so I try it out finally and instantly it sounded better than any high gain amp I've ever played. Better than the silver face Marshall next to it. better than Mesa. It was so beautiful I had to have it. Being the broke teenager I was it took forever but I finally got it. It's the best amp I ever heard and owned. Try it

I get GAS a lot, I spent tonnes of time on RU-vid... How I found your channel! I just spent $300 on stuff as I was in USA and things are cheaper. I am honest with my significant other more or less... apart from nearly a year ago I spent maybe $250 on used guitar pedals on ebay. However she doesn't know how many I bought or what I had to begin with :D Now though, we each have an allowance and it can be spent on whatever we want. So yeah it doesn't matter, I just have to save. Women get GAS for Makeup and stuff! So why can't we?

I have GAS for many reasons. 1. New band... Practicing at my house... I need a good PA system and a drum riser (pallets and 1/2"OSB work great with deck screws the. Toss on some carpet). 2. New band, new type of music...well, that requires a different style of guitar. 3. New gear being released smokes my current gear. 4. For close to 2 decades I've used modeling amps... Aka... Johnson Millennium 250 half stack (still own). When that got long in the tooth (it's a computer from 1998... Might as well say Packard Bell on it), I went tube. I was on a budget then so I got a NOS Valveking 100 head. Well, great if you wanna play Scorpions and Ac/Dc covers...not great for brutal metal. Enter the 11 Rack. Dual purpose and gives me Pro Tools. 5. I'm done with modeling and I'm going old school. Guitar, head, cab and pedals. See. It's totally justifiable. I won't sell my old gear cos, well, won't get much for it. I probably have $30k in gear, and I'm nowhere near done.

Most guys generally get into guitars at some time around 15. They yearn for one for a year or so, then get a crappy one with a bad amp, but feel great about it and practice a lot. Then they reckon they need a better guitar, so they yearn for a year or two and get a slightly better guitar, which they also enjoy. Eventually at some point 18 to 23 they get a 'proper' guitar which they show everyone and which satisfies them temporarily. It continues like this from then on, always craving more guitars, except that we get a little less satisfaction with each new purchase, unless it is significantly more expensive or otherwise desirable. We still want that 'hit' that we got with the early guitars and throw more and more money at more and more guitars, without ever getting the same satisfaction that those first one or two guitars gave us. This would also explain why people who should know better (incl you and me Phil) still buy awful Ibanez RG, Hamer and similar guitars from the 1980s and 90s. Those were the guitars that gave us the most satisfaction in our early years as players.

Super funny. Video! My dad plays a ton of golf. I'm always using that to sell her. I tell her I could be spending $400 a month on golf or guitars. At least with guitars I have something tangible at the end of the day. My wife is actually super cool and figures a man is going to have an expensive hobby so at least music is positive for our family. .....great video topic!

Alright, I'm a beginner. I'm an old beginner, I've got a Squier Strat Standard, when I got it, I thought I'm going to make it a point to play this thing forever. It really is all the guitar I need, but... Since I've been looking, I get the "wants". This one is used, a friend hooked me up with it, so it's still somebody's old one. He stepped up, and bought a better guitar, and somehow I want to too. I use the excuse a wider nut will make my playing cleaner. It really is all the guitar I need but everybody calling it a beginner guitar makes it seem like it can't be enough.

I have 2 J-Customs, 2 Jems, a Universe, a JS1200, an RG655, a Dean MAB1 Armorflame, an Epiphone SG400 Flametop Deluxe, a Tanglewood acoustic and my first ever guitar a "Cruiser" by Crafter. Well, one of the Jems I don't really want anymore, I just don't use it as I gravitate towards using the over. I've found a super sexy Jackson USA custom for sale, kinda similar to the one Philip is using in this vid, but it's orange, and I may trade the Jem in for it. Problem is, I know deep down I probably won't like it because I don't like glossy necks and I use my whammy bar nearly all the time (this guitar is hardtail). This is when I realised that I have GAS. I know I probably shouldn't drop 3k on a guitar that I know there's a good chance I won't use because I can't play ANY of my own songs, but I STILL WANT IT. It's beautiful and it's USA build and it's a one-off and everything good about custom guitars :(((

I remember seeing a video of guy talking about how when his wife would see a new guitar he bought, he'd claim that he had had it for a long time now. Another time a guy was selling a guitar because he said he wasn't playing it much and his wife had told him to 'thin out the herd'.

I told my girl on how much I paid on such n such music gear I had back in the day (BAD MISTAKE) I play three instruments. I almost lost my apt building years ago because we were going thought a bad time for paying the mortgage.First thing she said."Sell ALL your gear"!!! God I was freaking out!! I sold my 2 Marshall Cabs then, the head, then the effects rack ( Lexicon pcm 60 & 70, 2 Roland delays SDE 2500, ada mp-1),then the Two Tama drum kits (Kept the cymbals & hardware) ,Then the three Strats, two Jacksons, two Charvels, 1976 Les Paul Deluxe, Spector Bass neck thur with EMG'S ,then the Eden amp but kept the Hartke. After all that !! I sold the apt building I rebounded & got other gear!!Needless to say I didn't say a word to her about what I got now & she'll never know not if I can help it! I leave most of the gear at my parents my house.Every so often I'll just bring my Les Paul & or a Telecaster. I love playing !! Mind you the latest GAS thing for me is buying pedals.I already have about 16 pedals and growing every time I have enough coin set a side for "Another one"!! Pawn Shops & Kijiji are my best friend & worst enemy!!

I can't play real drums anymore because if I'm playing an acoustic set every time I go to a music store I'll see some type of drum or nice cymbal I don't have and I absolutely need it. I almost bought a $200 double bass pedal when in high school. The same music store had a $136 used Squire Telecaster. Moment I saw that I realized that I have a bit of a problem.

I am still gigging quite a bit, but I do have G.A.S...I will buy a new guitar, (in fact I have a list of guitars and gear that I want )at least one item in 1 to 2 months. It helps keep boredom at bay and keeps me excited about new tones and new ideas, and performing in general. I mean who wants to play the same guitar day in and day out at every show right? But I do have one rule...I only buy a guitar that I can use in a live performance. So they have to be player ready guitars. I am finding out more and more that most guitars under 800.00 need to have some kind of work or upgrade done before I can use them , which leads to..spending more money than what I want to on a player ready guitar..I do play acoustic and electric guitars during my shows. I may play 5 to 6 different guitars in one performance because of different tunings and styles. A whole other reason is I am also a session player and do a lot of recording with several groups and many genres. For instance I need different guitars for different sounds..Hollow bodies, twang, metal, classical, etc. I'm not making excuses, I actually have to have most of my gear, guitars just to survive in this competitive market. I get alot of calls , because of this flexibility. To finish up, and sorry about the novel, I am constantly looking for player grade guitars at the most affordable price I can find. I have a nice collection, but don't consider myself a collector. I don't have any wallhangers.

My Martin no longer has the new guitar smell....pretty sure that smell made me play it more. Logic says...buy a new Martin...I went to Guitar Center to pick up the kid some new drum sticks and a back pack for his drum stuff...it took every ounce of me not to pull a credit card out and come home with a new guitar too. I was super proud of myself...no one else around me will understand the Victory.

Here's one for gas. I recently acquired a used Fender Precision Bass in near new condition for $350.00 . Excuse used to explain to the wife, "Oh I was given this bass to me by a friend who inherited it from a recently deceased cousin, and my friend didn't want it". Yes I know it is wrong, but damn-it the price was too good to pass up on a Precision in such excellent condition !!! lol

Guilty as Charged! However after secretly buying guitars on a few occasions I have learnt that the purchases and subsequent ownership of guitars are far more enjoyable when I do it TOGETHER With my wife. If I cannot convince or excite her about the reasons for a purchase, then my reasons are likely not strong enough to justify the expense. Btw I almost exclusively own Strats, and I am simply unable to pick out a favorite amongst my collection. I sold a cosmetically enhanced Eric Johnson signature model two years ago - and it still hurts!

I mostly have GAS for the oddball stuff and signature guitars for some unknown reason. I think it's because I tend to mod and with a signature guitar it's already modded in some way shape or form. As for the oddball stuff it's mostly the 60s and 70s Japanese and European stuff. the more pickups answer switches the better. Also anything offset. Of 13 guitars 9 are offset. Why 13? It's all I can fit . I always buy a case with each guitar. It takes up a ton of space but it makes easy preservation and storage. at least for me.

Oh, I've got GAS. I'm having to force myself to stay out of guitar stores. If I see a Custom Relic or a Heavy Relic, and it catches my eye, I can't forget about it, I can't stop thinking about it, and I can't stop picturing it in my mind until I buy it. Where you really have to be careful is when you go to rationalize. Sure, I've worked hard, and saved some money. But do I really need 13 guitars or more?

My GAS is mostly kept in check 'cause I'm cheap. Usually flares up in the pawn shop. Most of the time their prices are too high but when something I like pops up cheap say $200 or less it's hard not to get it. Last case of GAS I had I scored a LTD MH-1000 for $120. I guess I have cheap GAS. Luckily the wife doesn't usually care.

Is that white guitar in the background one of those Alvarez Dana Scoop models that were hot sellers back in the day? So there's actually a sub-culture of guys who covertly try to buy guitars without their wives noticing? For me, I don't have GAS so much as I have IWIHSOMFGAS -- I Wish I Had Shitloads Of Money For Guitar Acquisition Syndrome! As of now, I have about 20 guitars (including 2 basses) and 5 amps, and if I had the finances available to me, I'd keep collecting on a regular basis. Cases aren't an issue because my wife INSISTS they all have cases after I pranged the neck on my first Les Paul. I built a closet to hold the cases so now she has no idea how many I really have. You want to have some fun? I do this every few years and it's a complete hoot. Get everything you own together, take pictures of it, write descriptions, and post it on eBay and Reverb for about 15% more than it's worth. Leave it there for sixty days. Last year I did it and sold everything but one guitar, but I had shopped well so I made out like a bandit with a good amount of profit. I got to upgrade about half of what I had, got rid of some stuff that didn't interest me as much as before or when I first bought it, and the new shopping was phenomenal. The excitement of knowing you can turn a profit any minute now is a blast!
