From my experience with sciatic nerve pain only one thing helps in the long term and that is sitting on a tennis/base ball. Sit on the ground legs straight in front of you, cross the problematic leg over the "good" leg" and lift the good leg up. Now insert the ball underneath the area that hurts. Lean into it and be warned , it is going to hurt like a SOB. Keep it there for a 20 slow count. Do it twice and your sciatic nerve pain will be gone by the next day. Problem is that the pain may be gone but the inflammation remains. You need to sit on that ball until you have no pain when sitting on it. Only THEN is the inflammation gone. Be warned again...sciatic nerve pain is like high blood pressure. It is in the genes and need constant managing. After that first treatment is it a good idea to do the "sit on the ball" thing once a week to keep the sciatic nerve pain away.
@drkristieennis
@drkristieennis 3 года назад
That definitely can work well for some people:) it’s one of the techniques that I really caution though. Since the sciatic nerve can run underneath, over, or through the piriformis, sitting on a ball can make symptoms worse.

Dr. Kristie, I love your video! Thank you so much! After suffering from a "pain in the butt" for a few years, I finally understand what it is and what to do! I thought it was sciatica, but now I see it's actually piriformis syndrome. And now I have some exercises I can do to finally heal it and be able to cross my legs again. Not only was it very helpful, but your humor made it so much fun to watch. I'm sending you virtual waves of gratitude and appreciation!

I did the tennis ball exercise that you did on the right back side in another video and I got so much relief and this one is helping me so much too. I had sciatica pain and this is how I dealt with it . I had a chair with arm rests , similar to ones in the doctors waiting room . I would sit in it and have athletic / sneakers on . I would cross my ankles and put my feet as far underneath the seat as possible , comfortably . I would then grip the right arm rest and pull and turn to the right , until I would hear a " crack " . Then to do the same on the left side . I would say 90% of the time , this worked . This mimics ? the way the chiropractor does an adjustment in their clinic .

I have a ruptured disc and it’s just like you say, from the lower back, down your butt and leg (left side for me) work injury a week ago. Today is the first day I went to the swimming pool to do some very general recovery work like a float belt that allows one to walk or run vertically in the water. I obviously can’t twist and can only stand about one minute before the sciatic nerve kicks in the I got to lay down. Can’t sit, can’t stand for very long and yes it’s a pain in the butt. I found heat, hot showers and steam room at the pool is helping, tiger balm and light massage releases pain but as soon as you load weight onto the spine / disc it like the worst pain in the world. Thanks for your video. Any extra advice is welcome.

The actual cause comes from contracted fascia tissues which pulled, compacted and, as it were, “glued” everything in the affected areas relentlessly together into heavy lumps. Not only very deep within the gluteals, but on the inside of the pelvis; especially near the lesser trochanter and the sacrum as well. A certain imbalance will also be found on both sides of the body; underneath the diaphragm and even up into the neck- and shoulder areas. The effect of the often severely contracted connective tissues within the body all thus can be easily compared with one experiencing walking around on shoes which are way too small or carrying heavy bags all the time. The build-up of pressure around the sciatic nerve is comparable with the weight of a big stone permanently resting on it and feeling like it is “killing” your nerves. However, there really is a very reliable way of releasing those tensions manually, but it absolutely has to be done with adequate high pressure. Little pressure is definitely not going to work, and tools and devices will in most cases fail to create the very craved satisfying releases as well. So, for other important reasons too, it just has to be hands-on. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UDbFIh0IS4Q.html

I certainly value hands on care and it’s included in my in office visits. However, it’s not always possible to do so and I am all about self care:) There certainly are deep issues but the surface fascia and areas also contributes. We have learned that light touch affects fluid movement and mechanoreceptors.

I have piriformis coming from the muscle not the back however the orthopedic took an X-ray insists that’s because I’ve Have spinal stenosis that is why have the pain in the Butt pressing on the Sciatia nerves shooting down leg. Again I believe it is isolated and not from the back. I followed your videos for stretches and strengthening the piriformis but I find strengthening the piriformis such as the clams work better for me. I tell my My orthopedic that my Piriformis hurts only when I sit. I can flex and extend my back without causing my piriformis pain . I can walk and stand move around and it does not hurt. I feel pain only when I sit. I may have injured my muscle from doing long runs. I see a chiropractor too and he also insists that the my butt pain is coming from the back..ugggh. .. thanks to you . Great videos! very well explained thank you Dr. Ennis! For me my pain started about 3-4 month ago. I got a lower back injury from putting away weights the wrong way using heavier weights then I should’ve been. I stopped weight training for 6weeks and started some core exercises that u demonstrate in other videos. They helped very much! I resumed weight lifting and Im doing much better. I notice a different type of pain now… more of a buttocks/lower back, when standing for a long period of time I get a burning sensation/pain in the buttocks. So I did your tests, I feel pain when bending forward and backwards & the chair test seated while raising my leg… would you say the glute exercise and side leg raises would help me in my case ? I started them as of now, would this be the correct approach for me? Looking forward to your advise. Thank you for all the great videos you put out there to help everyone 🙏

My 93 year old mother is currently suffering from sciatica. She is also suffering from breast cancer and is very frail and weak. Is there anything she can do while seated to relieve the pain? This is causing her more pain than anything else and she's so uncomfortable. Aside from tylenol I don't know what to do for her. Thanks for any help.

Typically sciatica is in one leg. It can happen in both but it is a good idea to have this looked at in person.

Anyone else have a mix of all these??? so annoying, can't figure this out. the pain begins just above my left butt cheek, and radiates to my left hip and anterior left thigh... could it be a mix of muscle/nerve???
