Do you know about Japan's latest flip phone?
I'm a Japanese writer.
My name is Mikan Oshidari.

But now I use a flip phone.
It's for mental health.
So my mental health is good.
I am writing a book about that experience.
The title of the book is ``I want to quit being a slave to my smartphone.''

I’ve been using an iPhone for two years, and I’ve been wanting to get a flip phone/dumb phone for a while now !! I’ve deleted social media to help with the consuming addiction I have with my phone, but I feel like I want to do more to really get a grip on my life ..! However, even if you can use the latest apps, the foldable phone style doesn't make you as dependent as on a smartphone. Maybe it's because slamming your phone down gives you a break emotionally. It's a good model for people who need apps such as WhatsApp to communicate, but don't want to rely on their smartphones. I wish there were more models like this.

hi mikan-san! i am the exact same feeling as you! i was sick of being addicted to my smartphone, and i have just ordered this phone from Japan to my country in australia, i had to use a middle forwarding service. i HOPE it works with my network in australia. Garaho are so cool, I use an older kyocera digno 3 garaho keitai, it works well overseas but this one looks better and is way more powerful, thanks for sharing in English

If you're going to have full Android and all the apps anyway, then what is the point of a flip phone? How exactly is this supposed to stop your digital addiction, when it literally does everything your old phone did?

Hello! Thank you for your comment. As you said, unlike the Dumbphone, which only allows calls and emails, this phone can have apps installed on it. So it may seem a little different from a "complete digital detox". Why do people use foldable phones like this... ① With a foldable phone, there are buttons, so there is a distance between you and the screen. This puts you at a distance from the screen, so you don't have to immerse yourself in the screen. ② Unlike a smartphone, it is a little inconvenient to operate, so even if you have the same apps installed, I feel that you are less dependent on it. (There is no clear data, it is just my personal experience.) ③ A foldable phone can be folded up with a bang. This allows you to put an end to a situation, so you can avoid endlessly looking at the screen like with a smartphone. That's about it! Japanese foldable phones in the 2000s could access the Internet, watch TV, and watch videos, just like a smartphone. You could also play games. Even so, I didn't have such a serious dependency. @@みかん-m8u4e Ok, that does make sense. I just never personally felt like the buttons were the reason I get sucked into a screen. For me it's more about the content that is calling out to me. I got addicted to the internet as a teen on my Sony T310, which had a tiny screen and buttons.

I always wanted a flip phone, but I love android apps and also need them. So, I was waiting for a flip phone with Android apps, and this comes. I'm so happy 😭. And Yes! Wow I'm surprised this was actually popular in Japan. I knew the anime won award/s. This is my fave anime-Shugo Chara! @@みかん-m8u4e oh yeah it would be an inconvenience if you don't know English, cause nowadays it's became mandatory for us to learn English at least the basics Oh and by the way I've always been fascinated by Japanese culture and especially your technology, back in 2007 or 8 i came to know about Japan and it's crazy technology so ever since i wanted to come there but i couldn't cause the first reason is I'm already an introvert and on top of that I don't know japanese so it'd be extremely difficult for me and second is obviously the life style, i wouldn't know where I should be going even with a Google maps over there haha, but yeah hope i could visit Japan some day.

After the test, everyone doesn't remember anything anymore. I'm so disappointed. I'm relearning English this way and it's really fun. Wow! It is said that Japanese technology was once amazing. Things like i-mode on mobile phones and Sony's Walkman. I'm glad that you are interested in Japan. I can understand your concerns. But now that there are many tourists from overseas, Japanese stations have announcements and signs in English, Chinese, and Korean. There are many staff at tourist destinations who can speak English. こんにちは！日本語で書いてくれて、ありがとうございます！日本語はとても難しいですよね、でも凄く上手です！私も英語の勉強頑張ります。ケータイ、いいですよね。スマートフォンよりもすきです。私は京セラのグラティーナという機種も持っています！最近ケータイが少しずつ再評価されていると思う。これからもっと人気になっていてほしい！
