If you get your Jeep stuck when offroading using the wrong gear could risk damaging your Jeep or injuring someone. It is important to bring the right tools for the job when you are out on a 4x4 adventure. In this video, I walk you through all my off-road rescue gear that I bring with me. I look at winches, synthetic vs metal winch lines, tow straps vs kinetic recovery ropes, traditional snatch blocks vs newer designs, traction / recovery boards, and more.

Casey, the working load of a D-Ring shackle is based on the pin being snug, tight, bottomed out, whatever, you want to call it. Your recommendation is good, but the flat surface is there, so you can use a wrench to break it free ;) great video, and I'm glad you covered what to do and not to do!

Excellent job explaining recovery situations. Outside of winch manufactures I’ve never heard anyone else talk about the gear reduction that you gain through having less rope on the drum.

Ya its kind of crazy how much it impacts it based on wraps on the drum.

Using the little cars is hilarious! But great job demonstrating it with them! Very effective. Normally they called the toe strap a static strap. And the strap that goes around the tree are usually called tree huggers. Great video!

My brother (RIP) tried pulling a small tree stump in Grandma's yard. He used a steel cable and his 64 Ford pickup. Hooked it to his rear bumper and tried to jerk it out of the ground. Stump won that battle. The only thing broken was his nose on the steering wheel.

I run a metal winch cable, just my preference. But I do! And always will use a hooked winch line, just for the times that your in a hurry. A quick click and your hooked up. It's rare... but sometimes needing a winch is to.

great and much needed video thanks for taking the time to put it all together, One thing that I find funny probably no one ese will but back in the last century the straps had muchy the same marketing that the ropes do now. Chains, which we used to use, were dangerous use the strap and bungee the stuck guy out.... straps have likely changed in the last 50 odd years but it seems true, everything is circular, except chains....

I had a trip planned there 4 years ago to go to Disney and Jeep Beach but everything got cancelled. I'd like to but Florida from BC is a major haul that I don't have the time in my schedule to make. I will be at Overland Expo PNW this year.

I noticed you still take out the ecodiesel. Is there a reason you pick it over the gladiator? I have an ecodiesel too and I think it’s cool you kept yours.
@Casey250
@Casey250 7 месяцев назад
Alot of it depends on destination and logistics. The EcoDiesel is usually packed and ready to go for multi night trips. The Gladiator is usually ready for a day trip or a quick overnight

Good video. Nice and simple. I do have a question though. I use an "old school" snatch block and it is heavy and a little awkward to deploy sometimes. I'd looked at those donuts but I have heard some people complaining that they are a little hard on synthetic lines, cuasing them to fray, etc. ANy experience with this?
@Casey250
@Casey250 7 месяцев назад
I can't see how that would be any different then the line going through a pulley. The main difference is the axle of the pulley is a soft shackle instead of a metal set of bearings. The aluminum is soft and gets nicked easy to take care of the donut or itll become a mess. If it gets damage then ya it could damage your synthetic line. I've also been told to never use a metal winch line on the same snatch block that you use for a synthetic line as the metal lines to create burrs and I don't think i'd use a metal line on the aluminum donut as I think it would damage it.
@sgtrat87
@sgtrat87 7 месяцев назад
@@Casey250 Maybe that's the trick then. Use a soft shackle that allows the donut to spin freely. I'm thinking if it bound up then the synthetic line dragging around the donut could cause wear. I've never used one, but have been thinking of getting mainly to save space/weight in my recovery gear. 👍

Get rid of that heavy metal hook! Freedom winch line from Bleepin Jeeps is a game changer. Totally takes the need for a hook, which is the same point you made in the beginning… metal is heavy and more dangerous. Freedom winch line has soft shackles built in. You can buy a extension for your existing line that turns your existing line into a freedom winch line.

You forgot the most important recovery gear 1st is gloves!! 2nd is a shovel! Always use gloves while using your recovery gear. A shovel can get you out of a lot of stuck situations!
@Casey250
@Casey250 7 месяцев назад
Great comment. While I agree those are great items, in my personal experience neither is really something I use often. With everything being synthetic I find less need to wear gloves and I think have used a shovel once in the snow. Both items I do bring though for various other reasons :)

That's wrong do not take your big d rings shackles and loosen them backup. That's why there's a flat spot on them for a wrench or a screwdriver to go into Em. You're bending them open and make them harder to get open so leave them nice and tight if they were meant to be.

Using the rc cars was really good to show people the difference between the types of straps . In Australia we have only recently in the last few years been able to get kinetic ropes we normally use a snatch strap which look like your tour flat strap you have in the video , you don’t want to to get them mixed up though. Cheers great video
