Joe looked at the drummer's lyrics, said "how interesting " screwed them up and threw them away. It was originally about his girlfriend and the Clash didn't do love songs
Topper wrote all the music, the spliced it, doubled , Joe went into the bathroom and wrote the lyrics in the bathroom , took him an hour..Mick thought it was a comedic track .. years later Strummer wept as an American Bomb in the 1st Iraq War had the song title on it..”The Only Band That Mattered”..your welcome ..- Dj Chris Clash (aka Ho Ho) 👍
Fun fact armed forces radio chose this song as the first song to play to kick off the gulf war, well at least that’s what I was told, I’d advise everyone to do their own research to fact check this fun fact that I’m repeating from someone else’s mouth
That song is a little deeper than being about disco records being banned in Iran. Does anybody but remember when Ronald Reagan sold us out to The Ayatollah and Iranian government that year? We need to Rock The Casbah with a 500,000lb Nuke.
For his own benefit because he was a total mess on heroin. It was the start of the end of the band but it was on its last legs anyway because of Micks diva behaviour!
@@ECCENTRICERIC69 no not at all, he has gone on record saying that seeing terry playing drums on the song he wrote was one of the reasons he started using again post clash
@@XRCF You make no sense. He was using heavily for years and despite several warnings and promising to give up heroin to the rest of the group he just couldn't lay off it. There are many Topper interviews where he admits he was in a dark place and it was his fault he couldn't give it up. Thankfully he is in a great place now!
