In 1980, the U.S. Congress created the Superfund program, which identified and cleaned up areas polluted by hazardous waste. Decades later, nearly one in six Americans still lives within three miles of a major hazardous waste site, though few people could tell you where it is.

Right down the road from me is a Superfund site. I doubt that many in my community even know it exists. I stumbled across the Superfund site and was shocked to see what I grew up thinking was a BP oil area was actually a dioxin-soaked polluted site. There is a 8-foot barbed wire fence to keep the curious out... oh, and it happens to be one of the 1300 not cleaned up. Yay.

It said that I lived 27 miles from two of them. I used to live on the East coast, it's better here in NC than in NJ!

I don't understand why the companies who did it aren't held accountable.

Hanford is one of if not the worst ones. I've lived by it all my life and never knew how bad it was there. It's still bad and the cleanup crew keeps mishandling things. Oh and Trump cut funding for it. Now I wonder just how much the health of the people here has been affected by this site.

Superfund sounds like super fun. Somebody please change the name.

The Santa Susana Field Lab outside of Los Angeles is a California superfund site, but it's not on the national registry. That doesn't keep it from being toxic and radioactive.

I grew up and am currently living by 3 different sights all 5 blocks from my house. One of the sites could be seen from my old back yard. This is not including times beach, MO which is 20 mins away. The sites near my house are contaminated with Cadmium, Chromium, Creosote, Asbestos, Lead, Arsenic, and Pentacholorphenol. They found samples in soil and groundwater. It don't help that it flood here multiple times through Spring and Summer seasons.

Yes, live next to and sort of over a superfund site. Our superfund ruined our water supply to the point we need to buy water and have it piped into our city. There is also a land site poisoned for most likely forever. I buy my drinking water or filter it. I will use the imported water for baths, dishes etc. but not for drinking or cooking. Why? Because as a suburb we get our water from Phoenix, AZ.
