When I talk about how much I love adventure fantasies, I’ve always got this image in my mind about a group of friends wandering around a setting and just doing whatever they want and having fun doing it. I’m not looking for some weird lore, or deep traumatic stories, or villains that are just the worst, I’m looking for a road trip. When I say “I want another show like Avatar the Last Airbender” what I mean is “I want a story about well fleshed out and enjoyable characters interacting with the world.” And you know what? I got that from Craig of the Creek, the Owl House, and the Ghost and Molly McGee.

I agree with that! And I feel like the next step to evolve the adventure fantasy genre it’s for the characters to come first, everything else come second. You can I have a high steak plot, or more slice of life story, you just Gotta make the characters likable interesting and new. This why a lot of shows from cartoons to anime the live action are usually praise for their characters most of all. No matter how dark or light heart of the story gets if you don’t do anything new or interesting with characters then the show is going to fall flat. And I feel like most modern shows and cartoons forgot that. This is why I actually like filler because filler for a lot of shows is the heart of the show. So yeah, I agree with you

Honestly I feel like when it comes to adventure fantasy, people have their priorities backwards. They think that all the dark aesthetics and bad villains and traumatic stories are what makes it. But its just the dressing. The things that matter are the characters and their relationships with one another. And side note, I love the idea of a group of friends on a road trip driving into a fantasy world.

I once got flamed in a discord server by having the audacity to say that Abbott Elementary was more engaging than Amphibia or Steven Universe purely because it was a comedy show made by someone who was inspired by her teacher in sixth grade and as such made a show about teachers being there for their students, and when the showmaker found out that her teacher became an instant fan of the show, she cried.

My biggest complaint with modern cartoons is what i call the Steven Universe cycle (since SU was first show i saw this happened to from beginning to end) Basically a fantasy show will start out slice of life-ish with self contained stories in each episode, giving of an actual *cartoon* vibe. But then for one or two episodes it hints to there being a bigger story. Morr people get invested in the show. The writers keep dropping little chunks of lore to keep the theorist from getting a life. Episodes start all slice of life-ish again. Thr fans only become concerned with theories and lore. This continues on for each season. Through in a promo for an hour long special now and again . Watch the ending. And boom. Everyone acts like this show never existed. I have never seen a action based show of my generation that hasn't acted or almost did this cycle.

The comedy aspect of Gravity Falls has stuck with me more than the mystery stuff ever did. And Alex Hirsch knows this because the secret cyphers that were always at the end of each episode were actually really easy to decode and more often than not very silly. Personal favorite goes to “IT WORKS FOR PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGS!” I could never get into the Dragon Prince. I tried. Never really understood the hype around it either. The fact that watching She-ra actually became tedious should have led me to dropping the show all together like I did with SU. Something that I found really interesting when I watch Bojack Horseman reactions is that people in their comment sections are always going on about how “Seriously, it’ll get better” but the reactors are already enjoying the show long before it “gets good” because with all the praise that BH gets for being this ultra deep show about depression, people often forget (or choose to not focus on the fact) that the first half of season one is actually really funny, with the silly visual gags and various animal puns often getting the most laughs. Speaking of, one of the episodes actually dealt with how a character was really struggling to write her sad and serious introspective autobiography yet she was able to write a fun YA comedy series with much more ease and so much less stress. Even the people around her could tell that she enjoys writing the latter more than the former despite her insistence on trying to write something that would “make more of a difference”.

I think the Dragon Prince really demands you as an audience member turn down your brainpower a couple of clicks. I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way, but like... it's like Avatar but without any of the occasional moments of brilliance or overall refinement that characterized that series. It's raw and nerdy and super, like super... not smart. At all. I say this as someone who really loves that show. I'm pretty attached to its characters. But man does it take some getting used to.

bojack horseman getting heralded as one of "the darkest/deepest animated shows of all time" has been so horrific for its reputation because it's like...a fun show! Like of course all the heavy stuff is important to its identity, but a lot of that really comes from following bojack's personal journey; he's seriously the main source of like ALL of the extra heavy stuff because he's such a terrible person, while the rest of the characters' experiences are just real life stuff with all the lows AND highs that come with them. hell, diane's whole arc is about learning her life is better WITHOUT all the drama and "deep" existential nihilism that comes from being around bojack. People praising the show for being so deep and edgy are ultimately missing the point entirely.

What's even weirder is I don't hear people really have these kinds of opinions other than her and Mikaila. Only very loosely related, there's a channel called "Frustrated Jacob" who's kinda like the Lily of video games, bar the snark, who's also very interesting to watch cause he doesn't fall into the pitfalls of video game discussion way too many people do.

Brave is a weird film for me. It was like they tried to get everything in there at once and it goes no where. The films acts as if the mother is too controlling but she is and isn’t at the same time it feels odd. Some scenes she’s do this to Merida and others she doesn’t and the film wants us to feel for her situation like she’s in the same position as say Anna and Elsa, but she’s not. Unlike those two she had her freedom she had days she could do what she pleases and while her mother didn’t approve of those things she never stopped her from doing them. But then you get scenes where she is giving Merida lessons and making her a proper lady and it throws me off a little. I also can’t ignore that Merida at times acts spoiled. Again unlike Anna and Elsa she has freedom to do as she pleases and does nothing but complain and argue. And yes it sucks she has to marry a man but she don’t wanna be queen why not step down from the throne?? I realise this turned into a rant about the film and not appreciating your comment I do apologise I just had to get this off my chest

Stumpy telling her that her parents were proud of her after she helped fix his restraunt and Wally for when they agreed that they don't care about other people thinking they are weird. Here's the thing, amphibia is a slog through the first season or so. The show didn't really take the time to actually develop their characters so there's not much to be invested in. It's only once Sasha and Marcy became part of the main cast that the show actually gets a little interesting. As much as I like the characters the show gets boring super quickly. It's only once the trio gets back together does anything interesting happen character-wise. Battle of the Bands is my favorite episode because it develops the relationship between the main three and has a cool musical number, but so much of the show is people fucking around and being boring. There's a lot of fun ideas with characters, but the show just keeps shoving more and more in until the cast is too big for the show to handle. Sorry for ranting but I've been watching this show lately and needed to get my thoughts out.

Not me coming up with an entire slice of life idea while watching this. It's strange because I enjoy adventure fantasy in a... superficial way, I guess? I like the thought of becoming fast friend with a group of people but getting to really know one another over time. I like the thought of a world with magic because I can believe there's a better world than ours out there. I never watched the Lord of the Rings because elitists kept telling me how it was better than everything I enjoyed, and no 12yo wants to hear that. But when I watched it with my friend last year, seeing the 'good guys' win and the 'bad guys' lose was _literally_ all I wanted and I _got_ that. Sam sticking with Frodo? Beautiful. The ring being destroyed? Immaculate. The war that was happening at the same time? I got a little bored, but they were brethren too. It's so hard to watch fantasy stuff because people think that good guys winning and bad guys losing is _bad_ somehow, but it was my escapist fantasy. I don't even need the adventure since some of my actual favorite books and shows are slice of life, I just need it to be detached enough from our world or the world I perceive that I can believe that world might just be better than this one. With all this botching of themes (thank you for including Raya) and needing to make everything bigger than necessary and dragging out the plot for no reason, I get so tired that I just look up character interaction compilations on RU-vid or Twitter instead of actually watching the show. The current exception being Legends of Tomorrow. I can't even really say I like fantasy adventure, I just like fantasy.

You know, what you said, Lily really got me thinking about making my own projects: if you don’t want to read, feel free to skip: I’m a hobbyist writer and I’m making a story aimed at kids and teenagers called Star Cross Warriors, where it’s basically Transformers meets Hello Kitty. It’s mostly about a group of cutesy critters befriending giant robots who come from a war-torn planet with a toxic masculinity warrior culture. Both of these two very different groups learn from each other and grow thanks to their friendship. I want to make the critters the main characters but I also want to make the robot their own characters as well since they have y their own character arcs and goals as well. The story does take place in the magical critter world but they do visit the grimdark robot world when they start invading the critter world and originally only go there to defend themselves and take back their world, but they also learn about all the victims and prisoners of war in the robot world, not to mention thousands of robot people starving and scared out of their lives and the critters now decide to take back both their worlds and save these poor people. I know what I’ve described is very longwinded and I’m terrible at pitching but what I’m hoping is that this idea will be devoid of all the bad fantasy adventure shows out there and remains cute and wholesome but also emotionally deep and nuanced. I’ve always believed in keeping things deep and simple than shallow and complex and I hope what I’ve written hits that checkmark

Molly Mcgee and Hilda are two shows I really want to just sit down at some point and give a proper watch. Don't get me wrong I like the occasional angsty high stakes epic fantasy adventure much as the next person but something light-hearted, gently but poignantly emotional and most importantly of all fun is good for the heart and blood pressure. Also yeah it's really annoying when people keep saying you absolutely 'have' to watch so-and-so. Like, do people not get that the pushier they are in getting someone to watch something the less inclined that someone is to watch it? "Oh but you must watch Amphibia." No, no I do not. I mean I have and I enjoy it but that's because I discovered it at my own pace rather than being hounded into it. If I give this person anything- besides his valid critiques into Steven Universe and Catra- adult cartoons are just porn and blood. Take My Adventures with Superman. All I waited for was the profanity and was way too impressed when it went a whole episode and then *THREE* without it. Eventually it clicked that they weren’t going to swear. And the fights weren’t bloody, a story is developed slowly about the tech weapons and the concurring CADMUS conspiracy that ties in with Clark’s past. Who is a character with developments and insecurities who is liable to be tricked or pushed to irritation and anger but not in a dark way. Just the most reasonable of reactions when godly power is in your hands restrained as it is. A cheeky chaos god will get a door slammed in their face or thrown at a wall.

I hadn’t really sat back and realized how many adventure fantasy cartoons there are today until now. Granted, it’s a somewhat vague/wide genre, but it does make me realize what kinds of shows from my own childhood were different from that formula. “Courage the Cowardly Dog” was a horror/comedy (depending on the episode). “Powerpuff Girls” and “Teen Titans” were superhero action shows. “Scooby Doo” was mystery/comedy. Okay, so there was a lot of comedy stuff… but they were all different “flavors” of comedy. Some were slapstick. Some were witty. Some were laugh-out-loud funny. Some were internal-chuckling kind of funny. I think part of it is the shift from short episodic storytelling to a focus on long-form storytelling. I mean, when you watch an episode of, say, “Scooby Doo” everything is handled in one episode. Each episode has a beginning, middle, and end. And you can usually watch them in whatever order you please. It was easy to pickup and put down. You were there for a single story, not just one part of a larger story. Now, granted, some genres do better in a longer format than an episodic one. And some genres can pull off both (crime dramas, for example. You have your episodic shows like “Law & Order” and your long-form shows like “The Wire”. Both are good in their own ways). But I think these adventure fantasy cartoons are too focused on telling longer narratives. It’s why filler episodes in these shows can be so annoying. Filler episodes are episodic, since they rarely advance the larger plot. But then you’re inserting an episodic story in the middle of a longer story and it can feel like you’re getting sidetracked. “Steven Universe” is a good example of this problem. Anyway, I guess that’s my two cents. I like “Amphibia” (mostly because I like the characters, setting, and the mix of fantasy, comedy, and horror elements) and I like other adventure fantasy cartoons/animations, but even I admit there are flaws in this approach and I can see the value in cartoons being willing to explore other genres and story structures.

And I don't want to bc I have other stuff to focus on besides entertainment during the day. I love Owl house ans Gravity Falls, and I loved how voltron started out very comedy based with a bunch of bros being cheesey and visiting planets. It was fun that way. My favorite episode is the second when they are all failing to make voltron again and have to work out their problems. The show got worse and worse as it chased bs romances, made its nonwhite characters background characters, made its women dependent on men, and made some of the worst plot decisions that even I at 15 hated it. I semi-agree with this video. I agree that people should focus what having a more variety of content In shows with new and interesting ideas, but it doesn’t mean an adventure fantasy show can’t be good. When you Show the list of adventure fantasy I saw Okko in there, and I feel like that’s also a really good show Because it’s less about the plot and more about the characters. And a lot of shows now are like this. I know you’re Not that much into anime, but Anime right now has a lot of really good character crafted stories some slice of life to action. My general tip when it comes to writing a story is that the characters come first, everything else second. Spend as much Time fletching out you characters to make them not only enjoyable, but written well. THEN If you wanna include the story, Make it tailor made to the characters. This way, for example if you wanted to make a villain redemption, build it up, make it believable, and ignore what Steven universe did. So I would say Adventure fantasy is drowned out in cartoons, I would say don’t still make any more. Just keep other shows out of your mind And try to do something new and interesting with it

Ya really can't lump Wander Over Yander with the rest because it's not even fantasy, it's Sci-fi fantasy (think Star Wars) meets the Looney Tunes. The main focus is comedy, the character development happens to the main antagonist, not Wander. And despite the show getting darker in season two and Wander's extreme pacifism from the start, it doesn't go the way you think it would. And OK KO is technically in the superhero genre. I love slice of life and Fantasy Adventure. But I have a much higher standard for FA than Slice of Life. I love Craig of the Creek, its wholesome and I feel like I get a lot out of watching those characters. Slice of Life as a genre is my favorite because it has a kind of limitless potential imo, because it's based on how the characters interact and that can change a single scene so much if you just swap one character out. FA, because of that samey-bullshit you talked about, has a lot of shows I skip over, truly. But I do still love it, and I have some shows I really love out of it, like Owl House and Gravity Falls. I just wish more FA writers and producers would learn from the blandness in the genre. The fantasy aspect gives you so much potential to work with. It's kinda sad how much is wasted by people just rotating the same things.

I love the first season of Amphibia where Anne is learning & coming to understand the Plantars. The adventure was serviceable too but by the time the "big reveal" about the king & world rolled around I was getting turned off by the... generic ness (?) of the fantasy you're critiquing here. It felt like it was trying too hard to be a Miyazaki film through world building "twists" instead of genuine story. I'm glad they brought back the spirit of season one more recently but yeah, the animated fantasy adventure genre has def become saturated and samey. This is true in video games too and I find myself retreating back to games in the genre that are a decade old or older to really cut my teeth anymore.

The problem with bringing back the spirit of season 1 is that you lose all of the tension caused by the mess that is “True Colors” for like HALF OF A SEASON and then you drag it out even longer only drip feeding us meaningful plot once in a blue moon. That would be fine if the content that we were building up to was actually worth it. And it’s not.
@inuendo6365
@inuendo6365 Год назад
@@infinityheart_tm9270 That's the thing though, season 1 was more character driven and fittingly episodic where as the "plot" in season 2 is where the show started to falter into trying too hard to be a grand overarching adventure like many other fantasy series. The "drip feeding" is exactly problem caused by Lily's category of action/adventure/fantasy shows trying to build fandom hype. Granted, not all of the character driven episodes were bangers but season 1 was very distinct from other fantasy shows for the demographic and most character-driven episodes were better than... whatever the heck they were trying to do with Andrias and the Calamity Box becoming some giant sci-fantasy epic twisty tale towards the end.

I think you opinions are valid in this video, and while I might disagree with some of your points, I do agree there is a huge problem with white favoritism in the adventure-fantasy cartoon setting and that slice of life cartoons are being SUPER underrated . However I think it’s unfair for you to say that there isn’t any passion behind these shows just because you don’t think they are uninteresting and unoriginal. Cartoons are a lot of work and it take some amount of passion to create a show.

On sorta the same token, as someone who loves fantasy, I've just realized that I actually have a soft spot for Middle Grade Fantasy than Epic Fantasy or even YA. Idk I think it's because the genre has more emphasis on what children find entertaining and enriching that in the "epic lore Fantasy" story that makes nerds cream themselves

I don't mind fantasy adventure, as long as the story is interesting but balances out with slice-of-lufe episodes and the characters are likeable. But it's not for everyone.

I really do wish Benson and Troy got actual screentime in Kipo, instead most of the story was just about trying to redeem the next villain which just wasn’t as interesting to me :/

Now this is just making me think about how Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated is just... Not good. It's one of the most popular incarnations of Scooby-Doo but like... It's just not very good! It's trying to have an ongoing adventure fantasy storyline which in concept I'm fine with. As a mystery show, an overarching mystery being threaded throughout the series is not a bad idea. Gravity Falls was able to do it well, so in theory that should be able to apply to Scooby-Doo too. Maybe it could add some context and a reason why the gang is traveling all over the place. But in spite of how people praise that aspect of the show... No. In a lot of ways the ongoing storyline just makes things dumber and worse. And insufferable. They have a few interesting ideas, but don't actually go into them with any kind of depth or play with those ideas in fun ways. When Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated is just... Being Scooby-Doo, it's fun and good! But this relationship drama is wretched, and the overarching story actually robs Scooby-Doo of the one important and powerful thing that it's always tried to teach kids. To not blindly trust authority and to think critically and look under the mask at the actual human person behind these bad things happening. But nah. A space demon from another dimension cursed everyone to make them want to do masked crime now. Say what you will about the quality of Scooby-Doo as a franchise, but it's stuck around in popular consciousness for good reason. Part of it is the story template, and part of it is the characters. I think it's fine to experiment and try new things with the format and characters, but with how they decided to go about this ongoing story... If there's one thing that I shouldn't be asking while watching Scooby-Doo, it would be, "Why are these kids friends? They clearly dislike one another." Which is exactly what Mystery Incorporated constantly makes me feel. They're meanspirited, constantly fighting, and in some ways these relationships are actually unhealthy. Literally alls you have to do with Scooby-Doo is have these kids be good friends that feel good to hang around, and solve a mystery together. But Mystery Incorporated managed to fuck that up and a lot of that can be attributed to this serialization. Scooby-Doo has always thrived on episodic storytelling. It doesn't need to be Dark and Deep and Edgy to be enjoyable. And those things don't make it mature. My favorite parts of Scooby-Doo are just the little interactions between the characters. I like seeing these kids be friends. And sure, it may be a monster/mystery of the week show and not a slice of life, but sometimes that's all you need. Good characters that you like being around and an excuse for them to interact in fun and interesting ways. But within Scooby-Doo fan culture, I sometimes feel alone in this regard. :/

One of the fanfics I've been working on was based on an adventure fantasy anime. The show was perfectly serviceable, but it was nothing special and a bit of a slog at times. My story, however, is about one of the main protagonists going back home afterwards and just settling back into a normal life. Getting to be a kid again, getting a boyfriend and coming out as trans. All really down to earth stuff, things actual children go through. It's been a joy to write (excluding some minor writers block), and there's no need for unnecessary lore dumps or mysteries that don't go anywhere. It's simple, it's sweet, and it's emotionally moving. So many people just don't get that a simple story can be just as good and is usually better. This is why I scrapped a large portion of another story idea I had because it was turning it towards an adventure fantasy when it should be a slice of life. The story is about interpersonal relationship, recovering from loss, and standing up to an abuser. The lore isn't important, the characters are. And focusing on the lore would only lead to the characters not getting the development they needed. I unfortunately had to sacrifice some great Saturday morning cartoon type villains, but it was a worthy sacrifice. I do miss them. Maybe I can find a way to bring them back, but who knows. I guess the point of this is that adventure fantasy is overrated, and I wish more shows would go slice of life instead.

While I don't agree with every take presented here, WOW does it ring true in the bigger picture. It's like they refuse any level of creativity, like they're obsessed with recycling the same story OVER AND OVER with no regard for actual artistic merit and integrity. Regarding the GOT/ASOIAF thing, I won't try to defend it completely. It's very much a messy story, in every aspect, but I'd argue that books achieve a greater and more artistically rich vision than anything Dumb and Dumber ever vomited from their hellhole. All in all, great video!
