Bamboo is not as invasive or as difficult to contain as "some" people say it is. Some people will say that phrase when they are just repeating what they have heard and/or have never grown it themselves. It depends on the individual and what they define as being difficult or invasive. The word "invasive" is used loosely these days. Bamboo has many benefits and can take many years for it to really establish once planted. It's pretty simple really...If you are the kind of person who does not take care of your property or just can't, use a barrier. In regions like where I live or colder zones, bamboo (especially certain species) doesn't spread very fast at all and its fairly simple to manage.
Looking on the invasive plant species list for Ohio, Bamboo isn't even on the list. And there are types of bamboo NATIVE to Ohio too. Bamboo spreads by roots and once every 50-100 years it drops seeds (depends on the species) and then the entire grove/forest of it dies. You can't even cut a cane and stick it in the ground and expect it to root as it does not propagate easily that way. To put the term "Invasive" into perspective, there is actually a type pear tree (Callery Pear) in Ohio that IS considered an invasive species, yes, a PEAR TREE! But who would think or look at a little tree and attribute that to be an invasive plant? So calling something "invasive" like bamboo, may not be accurate because the DOA (Department of Agriculture) actually sees a pear tree as more invasive than bamboo.

problem is that most people would not keep a watchful eye out for their neighbors interests. Also bamboo, being tall, looks so good in a corner or against a fence which is the boundary and a sure rhizome explore ! That barrier needs to be 100% impenetrable else its going to be a problem.

I am so enjoying pulling up and cutting and mowing 40-50 sprouts and rhizomes from my neighbor's 15 feet bamboo creep of my yard. Works great for her privacy. Sucks for my barefoot walking. Not taking over the world but irresponsible pet owners and bamboo owners should be put to some constructive lesson learning! Go ahead and plant it along the highways and prevent the landslides. I would like to choose different for my back yard but can't.....yet..... Hoping your barrier will help.... wish the neighbor felt a need to keep her enjoyment to herself. Thank you for giving me some barrier hope

I love my bamboo and am learning to work with its growth. I live in a small downtown and it’s benefits have been tremendous from lowering the temperature of my yard, to co2 sequestration, to offering me a place where my imagination can run wild, etc. Thanks for the encouragement! Awesome video! What kind of bamboo do you have? One weird thing, I don’t often see any living creatures under its canopy. Do you have any thoughts about this?

@@daniellenuc You could look at the bamboo types in the video description or in the playlist. Birds live in it, and nest.

Now, let's get something cleared up here. Are you talking about Clumping or Running Bamboo? Barriers for Running Bamboo for sure, but barriers aren't needed for Clumping Bamboo?
@GrowingAnswers

Don’t need a barrier for clumping. But you can’t plant clumping bamboo in zones like mine. It will die. Clumping is a tropical variety only. Running is the only type that can tolerate cold winters and hot dry summers.

What do you mean by clumping and running ?
@cb8491
@cb8491 2 года назад
@@assadshamallakh4819 clumping bamboo tends to shoot in tightly formed clumps at the base of the main plant and running bamboo can send shoots out metres and metres away from the main plant. The running bamboo is very, very hard to control, so it's always best to plant a clump forming bamboo. If you plant a running bamboo, you need a barrier around it to stop the shoots invading yours and your neighbours gardens! The last thing you want is running shoots popping up in the middle of yours or your neighbours lawn or driveway.

@@GrowingAnswers Ok so what you are saying is that you planted running bamboo, am I correct? How can you say that it is east to maintain? My neighbor’s running bamboo grew all underneath my row of beautiful arborvities, popped up on my lawn, all from just one year to another! After cutting down every shoot and applying glyphosate , did this for 4 days straight, I ended up having a mini stroke that weekend! The roots are like steel! This is what I have to look forward to every year, so that I can prevent it from breaking my septic and my foundation. This is the grass from hell! Please don’t encourage people to plant this bamboo, they will be so sorry they did.

@hmc3142 clumping bamboo is easy to maintain. Running bamboo is not (unless you put a roo barrier). It sounds like your neighbor planted running and wasn't considerate of the fact that it would go into your yard. It also sounds like they didn't install a root barrier

Your info is very important, the only thing is that you didn’t mention what kind of bamboo you talked about, there are some invasive ones.

This info isn’t correct. My neighbor’s bamboo has destroyed my yard. No they did not put in a barrier, it grows all year long.

Running bamboo will take over an entire neighborhood. Cause $100,000 of damage to neighbors properties.
