What's a night filter in photography? I didn't even know until this week. So, do you need a night filter?

NiSi has a filter that I didn't even know existed. It's the NiSi Natural light filter. Apparently it's meant to cut out light pollution so your photos are much cleaner. Does it work? I tested it out for some night photography in Prague to see if it's something I might need or want.

These filters make a real difference in astrophotography more than night shots in the city. Otherwise, change the white balance at night 😁

Hello Brandon, Iam honored that you visit my country and show to your photographic community something from the Czech Republic. I've been watching your videos for 3 years and I've seen a lot of your photographic life (epic landscapes, seascapes, architecture, b-rolls, experiences) and for me it's a strange feeling when I see my little country in your video because I never expected the BvS to shoot in Prague. Its a big surprise for me and next Czech people watching your videos. I use lee filters to take pictures, but I like Nisi a lot and I'd like to try them sometimes. Photos with Night filter look very good. Good luck in Nepal 🙂

As always I love your videos Brendan, but not so convinced about this filter. I mean I would love to see you take one of you photos without the filter and see if you cant easily replicate the effect in Lightroom by simply using the yellow HSL slider. I'm willing to bet you could plus you have more control.

I'd rather not rely totally on an editing software to make my pictures look better. This will make me a better photographer and also more time outside than inside staring at the monitor. Just my two cents
@jorgepeterbarton
@jorgepeterbarton 4 года назад
Probably, but its like: -well that hits your sensor, so it may pick up more detailed values and allow you to expose/compose it right. -why light room? its actually more expensive and time-consuming than putting on a filter! and you'd be emulating something organically suited for the situation: its actually made of a material that absorbs 'sodium wavelength' so a narrow point. *although of course, filters can produce reflections and artifacts, i'd be worried about shooting lights with a UV filter on so there is that, as well as locally all the yellow streetlamps are being replaced with LED.
@PhillipCitizenJohnson
@PhillipCitizenJohnson 4 года назад
@@snowwalker9999 Well... all digital photography is totally reliant on software, both before and after taking the shot. I hardly think removing a yellow tint in Lightroom as opposed to using a filter is going to prevent you from becoming a better photographer or add significant time to your workflow to the extent that your time outdoors is compromised.
@PhillipCitizenJohnson
@PhillipCitizenJohnson 4 года назад
@@jorgepeterbarton You say Lightroom is more expensive? This Nisi filter is $165 @ 75mm and has one job maybe. Lightroom, if nothing else, will manage your library and still adjust your filtered shot if you're not happy with the filtration strength. As for time consuming!!! Just the one filter is a pain in the ass, but I'm assuming you'll be packing more than one filter in order to avoid Lightroom... good luck if you shoot b&w... you'll need to add yellow, orange, red, and blue filters. Don't forget your, warm, soft focus, star filters, hard and soft grads etc... The rest of what you said has gone way over my head.

The same as the 'red intensity' filters. Hoya calls them 'Starscape' but also recommends for blocking sodium lights in non-astro, or even making autumn trees more 'red'. They are didymium material, but i don't know what this is, only presuming. It blocks a narrow range of orage/yellow and increases a narrow range of red. Would have been great to see what it does to foliage! I see its autumn there. Secret is its a 'Night and Autumn trees' filter. One thing i'm curious though: does it tame the dynamic range allowing for better exposures with the direct lights vs. dark building shadows?

Nicely done video. As you get more into night and astrophotography you'll learn about light's bandwidth and how filters exclude certain bands of light. This Nisi filter appears to work in the 590nM band to reduce the sodium vapor level. The next level is the Ha and O3 filters for deep space. Enjoy Nepal, you're going to see a lot of dirt.

Plan on ordering one for Milky Way photography, although, not sure how much of a difference it will make out in dark sky country, shouldn't be getting a lot of background light pollution! The filter absorbs the Yellow Sodium-Vapor Light, but for $195, like the Lee Filters, they aren't cheap.

Not going to lie. I definitely prefer it without the filter. I like NiSi filters, but why not just change the camera's light balance to Tungsten or find a manual color temperature setting that works for you? The filter's purple color is complementary to the orange night lights, so all it's really doing is partially neutralizing the tungsten light. To the degree that haze is reflecting that light also, the night filter should help. It probably won't do a thing for astrophotography except turn the stars purple, though, since you'd only shoot the heavens in areas where light pollution is minimal.

For the same lens around the time I bought it; got a cheapo U.V. for the lens protection myth, it was horrible, didn't even fit the threads with any kind of success. It wasn't a well known brand. The Nisi cpl though; a perfect fit, high quality aluminium. Very pleased with it.

@EugeniaLoli
@EugeniaLoli 4 года назад
The Light Pollution filter is a must-have for both day and night. Particularly if you're using a camera with a Sony sensor without the proper CFAs (Fuji doesn't have the problem much for example, but both Sony and BMPCC 4k/6k do -- Panasonic a bit too, they all use sony sensors). Look at the video here of the bmpcc 4k compared to the new S1H: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4Al-tIFXFuY.html Notice the yellow cast problem. And that's where such a filter is a must-have, EVEN for daylight. Only thing I'd like to know, and it's not mentioned anywhere, is if this Nisi filter also acts as a UV and IR CUT. You see, during the day you'd want to use an IR CUT and a variable ND for video, so stacking 3 filters together is a no-no. If this filter is able to cut also uv and ir, then we have a winner. Would be nice to make a daylight test with an ND8 (to force IR pollution), and then test an IR CUT and then this Nisi filter, to see if it acts at all as an IR CUT too or not. This is the sort of test that does not exist anywhere on the internet.
