We've had snatch blocks, then came snatch rings, and now there is the Bearing Ring, the RR30 from Red Winches. Also called a Recovery Ring.
The idea is simple; take the snatch ring and add a bearing to make a snatch ring with two parts, a static outer shell and a sheave that rotates on a bearing.
In this video we take a look at the RR30 from Red Winches and check out the specs, weight and efficiency, then make recommendations for use.

Yes, it's called a snatch block. A wheel (circular lever), bearing and axle. Just missing the frame.

@@trickster8635 - an axle less snatch block - very oversized hole (bend radius concerns) makes the bearings x10 the price...

Great information here. When I first saw a snatch ring demonstrated by bleepin jeep a few years back n they talked about the friction on the soft shackle I was like well it shouldn't be that hard to have one with a bearing in it. This is the first I've seen of one with a bearing n yeah I can see that one is huge in comparison n like you said it would only really be advantageous in a large rig. I'd also like to point out that snatch rings are what first brought me to your channel when you did comparisons between brands n broke down how to use them n identify what is a quality one n what isn't
@L2SFBC

thanks Ben, yes bearing easy to add but for me, the weight and cost isn't worth it for occasional winching. They could make say an RR10 but I can't really see the point.

I almost would prefer the more weight, because if anything breaks, it won’t fly as far, not that synthetic ropes throw things that far

off topic: front winch used to winch back wards. Great info on forces and set up. BUT for those of use who are mechanically challenged ( dumb). could you demonstrate the travel of the rope. How much does the front rope travel in comparison to the double attachment rope at the back.
@L2SFBC

Twice as much as it's a double line at the back

I made a comment on someone's video of the snatch ring awhile back (probably within the last few years) concerning the fact that it was overpriced considering what was necessary to make it and that for that price, I would expect something with an inner ring and a bearing. I was thinking that axle bearings are not that expensive, so it could be done relatively cheaply. Looks like someone did it, although most definitely not cheaply...
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 2 года назад
Definitely not cheap, I'd just keep to the rings. These are however very heavy duty.

Thanks, Robert. I do wish, however, that you had included a cost comparison. Also, does the Bearing Ring have sealed bearings? A comparison might include use in mud. Is the Bearing Ring going to rust internally? How easy is it to clean or clear if debris clogs it? I like your lessons and comparisons, and have learned valuable facts, 1but need real-world info before I spend my money.

At 1:39 he states that it has a sealed bearing. At 6:01 on he shows the prices of all three.

@cwegga Thanks, I must have watched a shortened version. I watched again, and that info still isn't there. The whole thing isn't 6 min. long. It always surprises me when that happens, but I'm no friend of RU-vid, and they mess with me.

Don't know what's going on, but as cwegga mentioned the prices and the fact it has a sealed bearing is included. The video should be 7m 39s long.

As usual another great posting. Solid sensible analysis and comments. Very nice looking bit of gear but why wouldn't I just go back to the old steel snatch block given the very significant weight saving of the alloy snatch ring is blown away?
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC Год назад
You're right. For 4x4s around 3000kg, no need for it. Only need the RR30 for really heavy duty work. And, thanks :-)

Let's talk about how you are calculating your mechanical advantage after losses. I figure you're doing the following 2 / (1 * (1 + (2 * Efficiency))). I would propose that the calculation should be 2 / (1 * (1 + (Efficiency))). The anchor load is going to equal the load on the vehicle so the net mechanical advantage is going to be the anchor load divided by the winch output load, which is just your measured line load in the setup. The snatch ring losses show up as a reduction in line load going back to the vehicle (not measured) but those total losses still show up in the net measurement of the anchor load. I don't think there's any reason to double the % efficiency in order to find the final mechanical advantage. To summarize, the anchor load equals winch out line load plus winch return line load (which is smaller due to losses). Both of these tensile forces are acting equal and opposite against the vehicle and the anchor meaning the final mechanical advantage is just the ratio of your anchor load to winch output load. Have you covered your method in a video so I can follow your process? This all would mean the block, bearing ring, ring, and shackle mechanical advantages are actually 1.91, 1.88, 1.86, and 1.69 respectively.

hi - yes all covered in the original snatch ring / snatch block efficiency video. I actually can't remember how I did it, but do recall there were a few ways. I decided that it didn't matter too much so long as it was consistent for comparison purposes.

@@L2SFBC Ah, I had checked through there but just found it at the beginning. Your explanation in the start of that video is exactly how I have it stated above, but that doesn't match how you did it later in that video and this video!

My opinion when you are using solutions more or less built for jerk and snatch pulling you are defeating the purpose of the actual test.. something with weight tolerance of 4.5-7.2 ton or 4,500-7.200 kg as static weight load 9-13.5 ton 14.4-21.6 ton breaking on the cable ... noting i know of in synthetic ropes would rated for double to triple body mass of the vehicle whether you're pulling yourself out of bog hole winching your sorry arse up 25-35% incline understand what actual breaking strain on the cable you use has before using it Looking at the stretch flex in the entire you are only rated 1/3 of capacity in weight rating high poundage in weight can be very misleading when under constant load vs snatch 3-10 second exert force 1 will last a number of tugs and a number of outings..vs the reality of constant replacement after each trip the bush bashing you do... you know dead concept of a human being is???? do you also understand how this applies to motor vehicle and especially to 4x4-8x8 in a recovery process?????
@jasonhowe1697
@jasonhowe1697 2 года назад
which laws to you follow when you demonstrate and repeat the follies of others the average weight of a 4x4 is 2.5 ton base weight me commonsense is 7.5 ton rated recovery.. the bogan and idiots way to recovery you eill deploy at 2.5, 3-5 ton apply this same logic 4.5--6.5 ton gvm upgrade you are at weight or at close to double the rated weight of the vehicle in question if you understand the dead weight principle that is either going to be triple or quadruple the standing weight at 2.5 tons it is 7.5-19 breaking strain at 4.5ton is 13.5-18 ton at 6.5 ton you are at 19.5-26 ton in braking strain, a bad example of this is what Ronny Dahl has ILLUSTRATED though doesn't understand what breaking strain to failure point is and how you cause it through his own stupidity like doing 4.5 ton gvm upgrade whilst still running 2.5-5 ton syntheitc rope or same with steel cable and not understanding why the cables/rope failed in the 1st place

you know there is a way to get a metric ton over your roof. an exoskeleton roll cage which is affixed to the chassis and free floats with no contact with the roof because the whole thing is a welded 1 piece and is bolt to the underside of the 4x4

@@L2SFBC base listing weight vs actual weight listing is 2 different weights, there is a vast difference because 1 is a constant weight load, whilst the other isn't as it is designed to be used in a snatch and jerk..situation.. listing shit in LBS sounds great in in marketing though very dangerous when it dead weight is applied because you can be double to triple the weight at a dead weight rating...
