I use the "shock tool" more for holding the smooth links from Tamiya kits while threading on the ball cups but since I have them the do get used on the shock shafts. In the past I have used all kinds of pliers, some with better luck than others! LOL!
That's a really good tip, actually! I actually eventually went and bought me a shocks plier, after I scratched a few shock shafts... Those simple crimp tools could do the job just fine, too!
Idk, man. I'm sold on the shock pliers. Especially for popping in the balls or standoffs. Tekno, FTW. I don't always carry them, but I don't build kits without them.
