In my late 60's my fingers have gone and are too painful for more than a few minutes of playing. Sadly I never got to own the guitars I really wanted - by the time I could afford them children came along so the money went in other directions. All I can say is follow your dreams as long as you can because when the time to own your dreams is gone that's it. I get huge pleasure from seeing the smile on your face Dave when you play something you love. Long may it continue.

I'm a little over a month away from 70. I can relate. It's disappointed knowing I played better years ago solely due to age related stiffer fingers. Les Paul played until 94. I'm certain he could relate, too.

Well I suppose the "not getting what you want" made me a guitar polygamist. My first guitar was a beaten up teared down second hand the second was brand new but not the one I wanted (a Strat) no but the guitar was far more expensive so I had to promize to take well care and keep it for life. A beast of burdon, humungus lead heavy and hard to play so it gave me problems with my left hand and the hip. I was told that premium guitars are hard to play! You will grow in to it boy!

Totally with you bro. I came into some money lately and after responsibly paying all debt, bills, rent in advance, I bought a fender amp and three new (cheap/mid priced) guitars. People who don’t play question my little spree but if you play you know it’s basically having a different palette to paint with. They’re a joy to look at, they all sound different and each one can inspire a different mood.

I agree and I’ll pick up on one undervalued point you make - the joy of looking at the guitars. While I own a couple of US Fenders they sit in cases and very rarely seen or played. I have a bunch (well about 14 guitars) displayed throughout the house. All those on display are current model Epiphones, Gretschs and Squiers (and one MX Fender). I only get so much time to play but I enjoy looking at them as I walk down the hall for example. That’s the beauty of having a number of different styles and colours.

Thanks for all the content Dave- I've been going through it recently with some university stuff and life troubles but your content really does provide an escape from the stress of the world for me. It means a lot that you consistently put out this long format quality content on a platform that fights you for doing so- I appreciate it, and I'm sure it's obvious that many others do too. Also, sick intro jam on this one good job!

I’m so glad you made this video on this topic. I am in process of selling a heap ton of gear and just buying a Boss Katana 100 and the Fender Mustang GTX 100. I’m to the point where convenience in my playing is most important. Having every sound imaginable in one small little amp, without any pedals or any additional wiring, is perfect for my guitar situation right now. Again, thanks for bringing up this topic, Dave.

At one point in my tone quest I had eleven electric guitars. Now, after I've found what suits me, I only have six. Two are full size hollowbodies, and the rest are full size semi-hollows. All of them are modded with different types of pickups to give me loads of sonic versatility. P90s, Filter'Trons, Guild 'Lil Buckers, and plain old humbuckers. They're all keepers and the good thing is, with all the pickup variation, I essentially keep the G.A.S. at bay. It wasn't a new guitar I was after, it was a new sound. Modding an existing, and familiar, guitar with a different style of pickup may just be what scratches your itch to acquire a new possession.

Yep, spot on Dave! I have a miriad of "budget" guitars and they all speak to me in a different way! My go to guitar right now is a 40 euro Squier Strat "Special". I have added a decent trem system and a TUSQ nut with a decent set up and it plays so much better than my MIM Fender Strat! My 100 euro Tele has had a full makeover including some custom hand wound pickups. It absolutely rocks! My HB DC Jr FAT is my "punk" guitar but I love playing some jazz on it for laughs. I was worried that you had gone a bit funny - "Do you need that many guitars???" The answer is clearly YES! 🙂

Dave, At the end of the day it's your choice, and yours alone. If it makes you happy, and it's not harming anyone, then go for it and enjoy! I have 6 guitars and each one has its individual sound personality. I don't [play them all each day - sometimes I won't play a particular guitar for a few weeks. Then, I'll pick that guitar up and it will say, 'hello old pal, how's it going? We're going to have fun today'....

I agree with you 1000% I was very late to the guitar world. I started to play because my son played and I wanted to do something with him. I pulled out a 1982 Hondo Strat that my parents bought me when I was 4 or 5 and had it set up. Well fast forward a few years and I must have bought 50 guitars since. You are totally correct, every one is different. Some connected with me and stayed and some I liked a lot, got bored with them and sold it to someone else to enjoy. Buying, playing and collecting them is a very innocent, fulfilling hobby for me. Love doing it.

For me, owning more than a couple of guitars is distracting and pointless. I was once somebody who had ten guitars and multiple amps at once but I’m just a hobbyist and play in my room. After being very irresponsible with money, I lost everything to pay off debt. I’m now in a rebuilding process but I’m only going to have two guitars. I wish I had all the time and money I wasted shopping and nodding guitars that could of been put into practicing.

totally agree with U Dave, I started playing with a punk/rock band recently, despite having an Epiphone Les Paul 1960 tribute plus with gorgeous Gibson pickups that sounds amazing (pawn shop), also a 1993 telecaster Squier series from FENDER JAPAN (before Squier brand), that I also love the sound of (that one from wallapop), also An Epiphone Sheraton that I truly love (buyed to a friend that took it from Venezuela to Spain) and also a Bullet Stratocaster that I modified with fender pickups and hardware (that one originally traded for a pair of used jordans in wallapop)😝 but that feels amazing too, none of them where feeling right playing with this band tho, I recently quited a seven year job because I was burned out, when I got the money first thing I did was go to the guitar shop and got a new one, tried like 7 or 8 guitars but the one that speaked to me since I saw it was the cheapest, a Gretsch streamliner junior jet P90 on the neck.. dude I'm in love with that guitar now, the only one I'v got new in a store, and probably the cheapest I own except the bullet strat (Before the mods of course)...I'm also a pawn shop lover cos at the end is not about the money, but the feeling. PD, I also recetly traded a pair of AKG mic's for a 50's classic vibe Squier strat that is gorgeous....great deal, and now I love it too!!!😛

I currently have 13 and they are all different. Also I am a tinker junkie. They are all changed from stock in various ways and 4 of them I built. 2 are Warmoth parts I had custom made "both are strats", and 2 I built from scratch....almost. They are both V style. The bodies I built from local lumber store wood and the necks "I do not have the tools to make a proper neck" are from 1980's Ibanez RG550 guitars. This is a very deep subject for anyone that is a die hard guitar junkie. Lastly...I find this is really important with me. Playing different guitars brings different music out of me. What I create on one guitar I never would have done on a different one. It's like cooking. Each guitar is a unique spice. Great video Dave.

My Ibanez RG is my main live guitar…it has been in D standard for almost whole time I owned it, with a two year period when it was in E and I hated it haha. The guitar just kept saying no! Then the Les Paul I recently acquired wants 11s and E tuning and it wants to play blues, to sing and to be played by fingers! Then I have two backups for both tunings, cheap Tele and Strat, they change tunings as I change my mood haha. Sometimes I just take off relatively fresh strings from one of them because it doesn’t feel right, if that makes any sense :) and I go between amps as well, one is more vintage, other more gainy, depending on my mood that day. It is good to have variety, it brings new ideas!

So many reasons to play multiple guitars. Neck carve, scale length, pickups, fret size, different bridges for palm muting and different dynamics, etc. playing different guitars or a great vintage guitar will often show you that there are very special or magic guitars. certain guitars cause happy mistakes and can inspire a musical gift.

Have you ever come across a guitar sound and then you couldn't recreate it because you forgot the setup? Happened to me when I was 17 and left my room in the middle of my best session to talk to a girl. Angela Biracco. Came back and my little brother had changed things up to play along with Licensed to Ill (let him use my stuff cause I liked that he was into music). Not even sure which guitar it was, much less how things were dialed in. I've been searching for that sound ever since then and I'm sort of convinced it was just in my head. Yet it's one of my favorite memories.

I have to agree with all the points made here. I used to try to make every guitar I bought to do the same thing my strat does (except for my tele that thing is just like screw you I'm a tele and you'll treat me like one) and that made every guitar second to my strat. But I kinda shifted my view and now they all have something inspiring in them. That said I struggle with Allrounder, or like we say in Germany an "egg laying woolmilkpig" guitars like the jem (or in my case the sterling St Vincent signature) . Since they go in all directions I feel like I'm being dragged into all directions and can't find a voice.

I'm absolutely obsessed with odball and hidden gem guitars, of which I own probably way to much😁 But to be honest, out of the entire herd only three guitars get played on a regular base. When they no longer interest me I either sell them, or donate them. After playing for many, many years a strato, an Es335, and a tanglewood tw47 give me everything I need or want in a guitar.

I must have about 15 guitars I'm not really sure but I buy old knackered ones and fix them up. Arthritis has come to stay in my wrists and thumbs so the playing is limited. I like the hunt of finding parts and refinishing and daydreaming about who owned them and who made them. I'm stripping the paint brushed black gloss off an El Maya em1000, its all over the plastic covers and body but luckily the neck wasn't painted. Anyhow I love guitars and have owned lots and still looking for the next one.

At the moment I’ve got a headless 6 stringer,a fender type 6stringer kit that I’ve yet to put together,an electro acoustic 6 string Ibanez, two 7 string Ibanez guitars,a subzero 8 stringer and an 8 string mandolin and I don’t think I’ve got enough 😜

Hey Dave. I like to see them as flavours. You add spices to your stew until its just right. :)

I find that owning too many for myself has been a distraction, i own several harley bentons and what i tend to do is pick one up, put it down, pick another one up put that down… etc it has a negative effect on my practice time

I find to much of anything is overwhelming for me. I like a small selection and simple set up , which i found out the expensive way. I have one guitar at the moment, one amp and one cab, i may grab another guitar when i find the money and only because, 2 years down the line i’m still thinking of how good that one played. I really dont know how dave can handle all those guitars and amps in his space, it would drive me nuts. However each to their own and if thats his thing then thats his thing. His explanation on why he has so many makes sense to me.

Same here. I will think of guitars as wimen, A Harem full of wimen, heaven and headake. Some will let you into pleasure whiles the others are fighting against giving a hell.
