It's been a little while since I Filmed this video, but I figured to get it edited and out to you before I start creating new and higher quality content! Are you involved in volunteering? Let me know who you work with and what was your journey to it!

Hey there Katt! I’m graduating w/ a conservation/sustainability major this Spring, and I just got my dive master this past summer. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for conservation work involving diving? I have been getting involved with a little bit of volunteer work here and there, but not necessarily anything involving diving which is what I’d like to do.

Check whether any dive shops near you organize clean up dives? That's usually good place to start. Otherwise coral watch, various reef restoration programs, citizen science monitoring tend to exist in a lot of places around the world. You can check with your university if they need any volunteers?

"Did you know that science is a kind of like a religion?" As seen on a sticker at Langton Labs in San Francisco: "My religion is science." Complemented by the Burning Man related sticker: "Just another burner doing drugs in the desert to commune with science!" ;) Of course there are also outliers such as Christian Scientists, but as far as I know, Mary Baker Eddy (the so-called "discoverer and founder of Christian Science") popularized the term "science" in the English language, but in her usage she intended it more as "knowledge" in a lexical sense. However, of published works in the English language, she has a vocabulary second only to Shakespeare in terms of unique words utilized in her writings. All of that is to say: I think the scientific method laden notions of science are a more recent language evolution. Though heck, even if science is someone's religion, I can think of a lot of worse things rooted in superstition or worse: mob mentality which have no factual basis in anything that is provable. Anyway, I'm way off on a tangent as related to one quip. Thank you for all the recommendations of how people can get involved! I know at least in Santa Cruz, and presumably other locales there are "coastal cleanup days" which require nothing more than a willingness to show up, trash bags and such are provided.

I'm glad one of my random thoughts evoked such a well written response! Someone else commented how science is thanks to trust, which can be verified. I think that's a very powerful statement. For me, science is knowledge or what we have thus far discovered about this amazing earth and universe

I love your video. It's exactly what we educate our followers and ambassadors to follow. We would love to share this video on our platforms.

I love your videos! But I struggle a lot with panic attacks which has stopped me from getting my PADI license. But I'm in the water any chance I can get. I wish I could just DO IT!

Hi Katt, thanks for the video! I am a certified advanced scuba diver, I am just finishing my bachelors in product design in germany and volunteered with a coral restoration NGO in Fiji for 5 months. I am 24 and I really want to get more into ocean conservation especially coral restoration but I can't afford being a fulltime volunteer and not getting paid again and I also can't afford a second bachelors degree. Do you have any recommendations how to get experience in the field without having a degree in a related field or do you know any relevant masters that don't require a bachelors degree in the field? Thank you and keep up the good work! :)
@OceanPancake
@OceanPancake Год назад
Hello! Congratulations on your bachelors! Product design certainly has many helpful aspects that can help you in the future in various conservation efforts. For now, I'd build on your existing knowledge from your experience in Fiji qnd try take some online courses in marine, conservation, science, ocean, Sustainability or similar. Then you can offer to volunteer remotely (think social media outreach, grant writing etc) it's unfortunately very difficult to get paid work, but you can keep building your resume

Hi Katt. I’ve gained an interest in marine conservation over the past year and I got my open water certification also. I’d like to do something with both of those for a career but I graduated college a couple years ago with a ba in communication. Right now I’m seeing if I even can use that to get into the field. I’d be ok going back to college but I really don’t want to take out student loans. Can you give me any advice? I live near Lake Michigan so I’m not too close to an ocean either.
@OceanPancake
@OceanPancake Год назад
You don't have to be close to the ocean to get out with conservation missions. Try see if there are any NGOs or volunteer groups near you that take care of the aquatic world of Lake Michigan. See if you can get involved in land conservation (communication is key in all activism from spreading awareness, outreach, grant writing, etc) you can be extremely useful. Unfortunately majority of conservation things are currently unpaid for now. But with more experience you can really help step up your position in the field. You can try various skillshare courses or other onljn3 courses that are significantly cheaper if not free. There's also ways to access university lectures for free (but you obviously won't get the degree)

The difference between Science and Religion in a nutshell. Religion requires Faith. Science requires Trust. Faith cannot be questioned, Trust can always be verified.
@OceanPancake
@OceanPancake Год назад
I love that differentiation. Beautifully put!

Beautifully put if you are looking for an excuse to preserve your bubble but trust is *based* on faith and science is very much a religion if you are honest with yourself. Of if you know certain things - im not assuming you have the necessary knowledge to be dishonest.
@BrentHollett

@@zerooneonetwothree1872 If you're relying on faith for science, you're not a scientist. Trust but verify means that any experiment performed by one person, can be performed by anyone else under the same conditions to get the same (or statistically close enough) results. You don't *need* faith, unless you're not a scientist, because science has repeatability, or it's not a valid scientific claim. Faith is belief without evidence. A non-scientist who simply believes anything because they're told it's true, is working on faith, but any time they want to actually verify it, they can (assuming they can gather technical knowledge). The "faith" you're talking about, is people not questioning sicence. Which is *specifically* unscientific. So no, I'm not being dishonest, but I'm also not working on a flawed premise that everyone is unable to comprehend the science and must "take it on faith" that what they're told is true. Science is not a replacement religion, unless what you _want_ is a replacement religion because you can't expand your horizons beyond blind faith.

@@BrentHollett Everything you wrote i heard million times and its so sad that you are stuck in the same loop as i was. Its ok to suffer from cognitive dissonance, its how we were designed. I spent 12 years digging the deepest holes of the internet that no longer exist in my search for the truth, provable, scientific truth and not some book based on theories. I was in love with science and learning that its all a BS hurt me so much i had to prove myself otherwise, thats why i spent 12 years researching and comparing the theories of truth only to find out that its all so complicated and tangled that its very rational thing to expect from an average human to eat everything they are served and not truly doubt the narrative. Its ok, i know what you are thinking right now, im not here to convince you or sound enlightened, im sowing the seed everywhere because that is how i started being honest with myself, stepped out of my comfort zone and acknowledged the reality of information i can truly know for a fac, so because that can only be described as ignorance i felt the strong urge to act and altho the truth is not pretty, the feeling i got can only be described as huge relief.
@BrentHollett
@BrentHollett Год назад
@@zerooneonetwothree1872 maybe if everyone else agrees, it's not them that's wrong. It's not cognitive dissonance, it's literally science. If you only have faith in science, you've created your own new religion. If you trust but verify, you're using the scientific method. Also "digging into the deepest holes on the internet" is not scientific research. It's going down the rabbit hole of unscientific conspiracy theories. Science is not the problem here.
