Please debate in the comments! Do you play the Player or the Table, or do you play yourself?
In this video we look at different scenarios and the decision making that it leads too.
Do you dare put Fedor Gorst in for a jump shot? Dare you leave the magician Efren Reyes a one rail kick shot?
Are you bold enough to leave your opponent a straight in shot or do you back yourself to make it.
Have you got the focus and ability to run out when it is just you, the balls and “the table”
I will show you some examples from the Matchroom Pool Highlights and recreate or analyse the shot played by the best in the world. Including Joshua Fillers decision making and Shane Van Boenings safety play.
Please remember if you enjoyed the video you can check out all the other game improvement videos in the Playlist. If you are interested what equipment all these guys are using please see them in the What’s in the Bag video series.
Please hit the bell to be notified when the next video is released.

The dilemma only exists in the clickbait title. You play the player when you plan to let him shoot. You play the table when you plan to keep him in the chair. Simple.

This is my thought too. Karl does have a great point but he’s talking about professional players compared to amateur players
@KarlBoyesPoolLife

Guys don’t nothing it applies to both? Pro and amateur? I think even more so in amateur. Because you can identify the weaknesses or strengths of amateurs. Some image better straight shooters, some tactically, some you can bait. Where as all pro’s have the ability to do that?

I think you play the player if you know his game, and you are confident that you can take advantage of weaknesses. If in doubt, always go for the finish and play the table

Table. Don't look at anyone else at other tables or matches. Not even your opponent. Focus on the table, have a plan and execute! Focus, intensity and concentration. 1 ball, 1 rack, 1 set at a time. Whatever happened last ball, game, set or match is over with. Be confident and positive. 🎱
@KarlBoyesPoolLife

@karlboyes7844 Ty. I hear what your saying. If they jump game subpar, or figuring out patterns or kicking banking etc can determine if playing defensive or offensive etc. I hear you there. NJ pool player here. 🎱 Got trained 10 years ago by Tor Lowry and learned quite a bit of things about pool that made the game a little more simple.

Reading the comments without deep diving, I believe my play is aligned with this answer. If you don't play against yourself enough, if you only play the "player," you risk losing control of the table every time,. Think of every game like One Pocket or the "Chess" of pool. Always play the table where you run out or leave your opponent no realistic recovery shot. Put the pressure on them so that your focus remains on what you can do in any position vs what your opponent can do. That last sentence is the only thing I will let my opponent control.

Very well said, Karl. I agree with everything you've mentioned. You have to play the table when the opportunity arises and clear it. At that moment, it doesn't matter who is sitting in the chair, whether it's SVB or your best mate. However, playing the player is crucial, in my opinion. To do that, you need to know him/her and their strengths and weaknesses. On an amateur level, that can be challenging. Nobody I know invests time in analyzing other amateur players; you just remember things along the way. And that can be tricky.

@karlboyes7844 Nah. I don't need the playlists. I watch em as you let em out. I follow you because you seem like a real guy. I really enjoy the vidsxwhen you are at the Snooker leagues with your mates. Sometimes, I spy a set of golf clubs in your pool room. I always think, "Man, I bet Box Office would be a riot out on the course". I can't wait to see you in Belgium. I been playing pool longer than you have been breathing. I KNOW we haven't seen the best of Karl Boyes. The look on your face when you dogged that game ball was priceless! You handled it like a true champion too. See, we don't have any REAL (classy) champoins here in America. Fedor is great and all. But if we could just get one, ONE Karl Boyes, then and only then could the Masconi Cup return to the United States. I'll be watching you, Mr. Boyes.

@karlboyes7844 Also, the fact that you (freaking Karl BOX OFFICE Boyes) took the time to reply (a real reply, too) to just another subscriber, proves my assumption about you. I think that a great proof of your actual potential would be a documentary of how you took the average pool player and built a champion. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, has even done anything like it. Pool Players are usually self-centered. At least the ones around here. European champions do not strike me as such. Even last year in Vegas, when my buddy Dave was harassing Jayson at the Mosconi Cup. He was the guy yelling "cheeseburger" whenever Jayson missed. Shaw had a great attitude and took it like any bloke down at the pub hitting overs and unders. And! When we see him the next year, he looks slim and trim. Great determination and self improvement!!! Had someone done that to Earl... all hell would have broke loose. Had it been Shane,.. on second thought, Shane probably wouldn't have even heard it. You guys are top-notch. Not some two bit con men trying to hustle some body out of your next meal. It will be Europeans who save this game and propel it into the future! Now, if only we can figure out how to stop them damn Phillipinoes!

I have always played both. If the table is open I play the run. If playing a technical game I play according to the player. The only time that could be difficult is if the player is someone I’m not familiar with. Then I play like I’m playing a top player until I get to know their strengths and weaknesses. I quit playing about 23 years ago and just started playing a little bit. I feel like a beginner all over again and am still trying to find some kind of consistency again. However, some of the problem is I have only had time to play maybe an hour or two every month or even couple of months.

I guess it's all about your level, sure at Karl's level knowing the weakness of other professionals matters but for us mere mortals then play the table. I've won frames and had to ask who I was playing to shake his hand after the game, I concentrated only on clearing the table. Another reason is fearing your opponent, playing a match against a premiere league cup match I drew probably the best player in his division, he broke and potted all but one ball leaving his only ball near the black covering the centre pocket. I cleared all but one of mine, gently cannoning his remaining ball into the black, all he could do was gently push his ball away from the black leaving me a blind shot into the corner needing right-hand screw to leave me perfectly on the black. I knew the player and his reputation but knew I could beat him over a single frame if I played the table and didn't let his reputation get to me. At the same time I would have players drop their heads on realising they had to play me, they had lost before they even put a hand on the table. I'm nothing special in the pool world, just loved the game and used to put about 20 hours of practice in most weeks, I got to a reasonable level for the league I played in and loved, and still love the game.
@Raspy387
@Raspy387 5 месяцев назад
I personally think you should mix it up as there are times when both are beneficial For the lower level players like myself I honestly think the biggest problem is what I call UNDERDOG PRESSURE when your playing a player who you know is significantly better then you and you can't help but think when you get to the table your saying you can't miss or you lose the frame which hinders your ability to clear focus on the game

I think this is largely a pro vs. amateur approach. As an amateur, I play too many other players too infrequently to really understand their specific strengths and weaknesses. Players are often leaving the league as new players join. Plus I don't have access to hours of video on my opponents and wouldn't have time to analyze it even if I did. Instead, I sometimes categorize my opponents as significantly better than me, worse than me, or comparable to me. For worse opponents, I typically play more conservative, assuming it will be difficult for them to pull of a lengthy series of shots. For better opponents, I play more aggressive, assuming my safety play won't be as effective and I'm probably gonna need a bit of luck to beat them anyways. For opponents comparable to my skill level, I just try to pretend I'm playing the table.
