Do You Really Need a Magnetic Die Cutting Platform?
New tools come out all the time and I wonder if I can make something similar myself and if it is even nesscassary. Today I am trying out the Sizzix Magnetic Platform for the first time. Review: I really like how the magnetic platform speeds up my die cutting process and allows me to make frames with nesting dies and eliminates the need for tape with stamp-and-die sets. I'd say it would be worth it for people with lots of wafer thin dies but unnecessary for those with only a couple of sets. If you have no wafter thin dies you don't need it at all, it is replacing the tick spacer platform so if you only use thick dies this would not be useful to you. I like that I don't have to use tape to keep my stamp and die paper to the die and it eliminates the ripping of the tape. I got along fine without this platform but now that I have it I will be using it whenever I need to use a thin die. It will be very helpful when cutting out multiple shapes for classes. It's a good product!

I love my magnetic platform. I was so frustrated with lining things up and using painters tape I didn't even want to use my machine. (I do own a Big Shot) I have never had any problems, but I see in the comments a lot of people are mad about it jumping the smaller dies around. That is what it is supposed to do, make the die find the magnetic so the die is secure. All you have to do is move your paper(with the die) to where the die wants to sit and cut your design out. That is just how magnets work, there is nothing wrong with your platform or you dies no matter what their size.Since this video was made over a year ago, did you by chance do a video to explain small dies and jumping to find magnetics to people? (I'm not trying to help sell the product - to each their own- but they are getting frustrated and that's not a good crafting/hobby vibe; it should be fun and relaxing. TFS your videos!

Helpful video and I thank you for your input. I however can’t stand my magnetic plate. The Dies wiggle way to often and it’s just easier to use tape. That’s just my experience.

Should mention a caution:: people who have pacemakers should NOT use magnetic plate!! These magnets are strong and can potentially turn off pacemaker OR alter its program.

I really dragged my feet on purchasing the magnetic platform because I figured I could use Washi tape to hold everything down, and later I tried making my own with a magnetic sheet with adhesive on the back. Well, the Washi tapes actually ripped my paper once in awhile, and the poor magnetic sheet started rolling up and squishing together. It was a mess. So I bought the magnetic platform after all, and I've been quite happy with it. Love your videos! Thanks for sharing.

+grace day I also drug my feet, but the painters tape and positioning was driving me nuts and making me not want to use the machine at all. I love the magnetic platform, best investment besides buying a big shot machine for my crafting.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the magnetic platform, Lindsay. I wish someone had done that early on when the platform first came available as I waited months for mine -- it was on backorder -- and it turned out to be a waste of time and money. It is true that the bottom plate must be flat in order for the magnets to make contact -- and it would've been helpful for the manufacturer (or tester folks) to have mentioned that. Plus, in my experience the magnetic platform seems to warp my plates faster than the standard platform -- I've had to buy three new sets. And, it became quite frustrating every time I took the time to line up a die perfectly only to have it jump from position at the last second and ruin my stamped/colored die cut. Alas, I've gone back to using Post-It tape to hold my coordinating dies in place. It doesn't take any extra time to tape the die down, and at least I know my cut will be near-perfect every time. Again, thank you for always sharing your honest opinions about products -- I've come to rely on your helpful information, particularly before I make a purchase of anything "new and trendy." Speaking of, if you happen to get your hands on a MISTI tool, I'd love to hear your thoughts about that product -- I'm very curious about all the hype and whether it truly is all it has been cracked up to be; especially considering the wait list for it is several weeks out. Jeanie Williams Jeanie, do you have a letterpress contraption for your die cutter, I reckon it will work the same as the misti. Where do you get the post it tape? I think it would be so handy! How wide does it come?

thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich No, I don't have a letterpress contraption, but i thought the misti was more like a high-dollar stamp positioner? I bought the post-it tape from amazon, but i think it's also sold at office supply stores. it comes in 1 and 2 inch widths. i use it for masking too -- its quite handy and i can usually get a few uses out of one strip (i just stick it to a slick surface until i'm ready to reuse it).

Jeanie Williams it is but it is mostly a hinges mount which is what a letterpress platform is, I have to try it to see if I can stamp with it! I made a DIY letterpress that worked as well as the store bought one so that would be an easy DIY:) I think I will check out the 2" tape, it would be great for stamp masking I think!

Jeanie, it's NOT the magnetic platform that 'Warps' the cutting pads, it is the 'Roller's' inside the Big Shot/ Big Kick that did it...sizzix has out now a 'New' machine {light grey and white}, that prevents warpping of the pads now...the 'Standard' size like you have now, and they also have a Big Shot Plus...so go to Sizzix.com website and they have all their machines listed...also if you have the magnetic platform, that works great! but they just came out with a 'Extended' MP...where you can put more dies on it, saving you time in cutting...that is also on their web site, and NO iam NOT getting any compensation for mentioning their names, I just think they are a great website to get all your supplies from...As soon as I can, I will be buying the Big Shot Plus for the reason I would like the extra room it will provide..Hope this helps...

Thank you so much! I had a wonderful friend ship a Big Shot to me and warn me there was no platform for it. I could not find one here so I purchased a magnetic one and then couldn't not figure it out. I was going to toss it till I realized I was putting the dies on wrong but your video gave me all new hope for the possibilities before me. Lol! I appreciate you and your excellent videos. Sure was hoping you were going to tell us how to make our own magnetic platform. I have a Cuttlebug and that is all I have room for in my limited space, so what can I do? Also, I agree with the comment about making our own substitute for the MISTI. Thanks for all your good advice!

Hi Lindsay, I decided to try using magnetic sheets before investing in the magnetic die cutting platform. It seemed to work pretty well, util one day that the pressure was a bit much, and it "scooched" my magnetic pad into a lumpy pile.. I finally bought the magnetic platform, and I do think it has saved me quite a bit of time by not having to tape everything down; and of course it isn't going to wad up like my magnetic sheet eventually did. Hi Lindsay, When I was out shopping I found 2 x fridge magnet frames that you place an A6 photo behind and put them on the fridge/freezer. I found 2 great uses for these. The 1st was I could store my nesting dies in them instead of the packets which gives me room to store lots of them and the 2nd was I found I could use them as a shim. I placed either a nesting die or the thin metal dies on it and put it though my big shot. The best thing was the magnets only cost 89p for 2. I love a great bargain lol

it didn't cut the magnet when you ran it through the machine? I tried a sheet of magnet under my plate and it was not strong enough to hold the die and paper.

I placed the die on the top of the magnetic frame (with the cutting side up) then the paper/card on top and it worked brilliantly. I used both cutting pads too. Thank you pesto12601. I have always loved a bargain but since I found you Lindsay I have become even more frugal. I have used many of your ideas, especially the home-made craft items like the glimmer spray, sponge blenders, sponge wedges in lids and I even made my own blender pen too. Keep up your fantastic work/ideas. I check everyday to see if you have posted any new videos. Dee x

arieswomandi ahh, I got it BUT the thing about the strong magnetic plate is that is holds the paper and the die in place so the paper won't shift either for if you need to line a die up exactly and the cut side of the die is down facing the magnetic platform so you can see through the die for proper positioning. Your method will certainly work for keeping the dies lines up to make frames but the paper can still shift and since you put the paper over the die you could not properly line up a stamped image over the hole in the die but if you are not doing stamp-then-die project it is just fine. I was wondering if my sheep magnets were just wimpy because I could not get it to hold the die and paper through the plate. We are talking about 2 different animals but I do love your idea, thank you for clarifying.

Hi,u can use a dryer sheet also to get all the piecies out of your die,works great,run it through with the die and everything will stick to the sheet.

I am soooo glad I bought the electric die cutter. I had to have my hubby do all my cutting for Christmas cards because my shoulder is worn out and I was in danger of ruining all the physical therapy I had last fall.

I took: 1 old Essentials Platform, 2 Wafer Thin Adapters, and 1 Sheet of magnet from Home Depot. (The Home Depot magnet is used to cover metal air vents.) I used some double stick tape between the layers and a little duct tape on the ends and made my own magnetic platform. Depending on the age of your machine you may need to add a few shims such as a piece of card stock or a heavy plastic transparency to achieve the thickness you need. To make your "sandwich", take your home made magnetic platform, place your metal die cutting side FACE UP, add your paper and then a clear plate to finish. It is so nice to only have to use one clear plate. The only down side would be that I occasionally cut the magnet by placing the die cutting side down. I just replaced my magnet after using it for 2 years. Only cost $3.00 I think.

I watched the You Tube video of someone trying to straighten their bent plates in the oven--I thought it was nice that she was honest and said she ruined one of the plates. I'll stick to hot water too. ;)

You mention to put cutting dies down...I've heard from others to place them upwards...Why the difference? Also, a tip I have learned I don't have bent plates because I only use one for the cutting side, and turn it over each time is starts to bend. Works wonders.

Some machines say cutting side up but you can do either in a big shot and if you usd the magnetic plate you wan cutting g side down so the magnets can hold the dies and paper in place. It also was easier if die cutting a stamped image.

Embossing Heat Gun works better then hot water, cause I try hot water, it just cleaned it. But you can watch the plate bend down. But I am talking about the Evolution plate. They are bad about boweing.

aahh. thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich , I have a hack for you and once you try it, you will never go back! lol i swear it makes ANY intricate die work! get a NEW drying sheet (i use a non-dye sensitive so it doesn't smell... and that's what we have for the household use anyway), folded it in 4 or if your die is large, stack 4 sheets. You will be reusing this a lot, so no worries place the drying sheets between the cardstock and the die and pass it through... when you peel die, the pieces are ALL stuck to the drying sheet and all you need to do is peel the one you want and scrape off the little annoying bits and pieces! after i found this out, i started using my doilies again :D and they work fabulously now!

I was having a hard time with the magnetic platform and the shifting of the very light dies on my stamped image -- it ruined alot of them because there aren't enough magnets in the underside of the platform for the light dies and they can be easily dragged to a closer magnet, so I have compromised and use the magnetic platform for my Spellbinders, QuicKutz and heavier dies, and just use Post-It tape (or paper medical tape) for the thin dies and stamps. I am a much happier camper that way..... My Cuttlebug was my goto product for 10 years until my arthritis kicked into overdrive and now I use a Vagabond that I got for a steal with a great price at my Joann store. As always, Lindsay, you are a pleasure to watch & learn from!

Great tips! Don't use wax paper though because it leaves a film on your dies and will ruin them eventually. Use a bit of a plastic grocery bag instead; they have a little waxy feel to it but don't have that wax film and actually come out just as or easier than wax paper.

This year they launched a longer magnetic platform too. it is supposed to help with the a2 card dies. Not sure if I will.buy it...but love the one you demoed. Use vitality. the price you mentioned is a great deal.

***** Are they making long thing dies now? I bet it would be useful for teachers because they can cut a sheet of 12"x12" paper in half and cut a bunch at once but this is fine for what need:) Good to know though:)

Love my Magnetic platform. The more complicated the dies get the wax paper doesn't work anymore. What works wonders are dryer sheets. Connie Stewart has a great video on using the dryer sheets. Also Karen Burniston has a good one.too.

thanks, lindsay,! i wanted to and to amanda evon's comment but there was no reply button under hers, but it does seem to be the newest thing to use the used dryer sheet under intricate dies. i've seen a many use and like that. i have a doily that i well try it on. i don't use/have alot of the intricate ones. thanks!

Hi Lindsay. I've heard that the wax paper can cause build up, but you can use pieces of the thin, plastic grocery bags to avoid paper sticking in your dies. Just thought you'd like to know!

When I use my magnetic platform I use a presision base plate in place of the bottom cutting plate especially the metal dies.

i know i had asked if there was another way to use die cuts with out the machine and you said there is not another way but i have a hard head and i was determined to find another way. i did! by taping the die cut to the stamped image to be cut out ,flipped it over and rubbed it with a block of wood or an acrylic stamping block and adding a bit of pressure, you can.

How you get the sheets of magnets to work is to put the base plate than a clear plate then the magnet sheet then the the paper then the thin die topped with another clear plate. It works beautifully and you don’t need to buy a $30 magnet plate!

Sandra Golash yeah, I thought it looked cool but it was not worth it until I had a bunch of dies BUT it is kinda a game changer. It is funny cuz when my friend Kathy got one I was like "meh" and now I am like, wow, this is awesome! You have to have a perfectly flat bottom plate for it so you might end up having to replace that more often or keep one special for the magnet plate or just be sure to flip it around often..

Loved the video, but even more loved the stamp and matching die from Local King...I hope they are still in business..I will be going there tomorrow to look online...I have the magnetic platform and I love it...I find with the very intricate dies that the metal shims work great...Just FYI tip I learned yesterday from the owner of Cherry Lynn dies, he said to use plastic grocery bags (cut to the size of the die, instead of the wax paper..He said it could hurt the dies somehow...I don't have the link but it is a newer video..Thanks Lindsay...V.

I absolutely love my magnetic die cutting plates. The bottom plate is magnetic covered in hard plastic but the top 2 plates are flexible. I find myself not having to shim waffer thin dies. I can't and won't complain about the $25. I used a 50% off coupon at Michaels.

Yes, thanks for that suggestion Lindsay! I think I see what you're saying...if Im understanding you correctly, the magnet would work to keep the paper from moving ( for as long as the magnet is thinner than the die so as not to cause obstruction to the top plate from putting adequate pressure on the die), but y'know when I'm trying to cut a small stamped image like a flower for eg,, and I need the die to stay put and not jump around, accidentally cutting off my stamped flower image, I still need somehow to secure the die rather than the paper... I hope I'm making sense... So if I'm just cutting randomly on a piece of paper using a tiny die, I guess, would be much easier to accomplish with that magnet sheet rather than trying to get it to cut just right around a tiny stamped image without the die shifting. Your thoughts please... :)

M S I am saying that it you have a piece of magnet or metal on the paper, not on the die, to keep the paper from moving the die should stay in place too...maybe I will try it and do a quick video, would that help?

Thanks Lindsay, yes, I do realize that this idea may work if you dont have a specific area/design on the paper you need cut, but not so sure it'll work if one's targeting a rather tiny precise stamped image/design to be cut when I want the die to stay put and not move on me as the plates go through... a smaller die would still jump around based on the magnets pulling it from the magnetic platform, even with paper staying put, causing un-precise cuts. I'll have to try it out though... Sure, a video will really help!!! :)

Oh so that's what the sticker is on the bottom of my Ellison Big Shot! It's the same color as this, a friend got it for me from a yard sale, my date says 11/05/05...I think the middle number is hard to read.

I've hardly used it (have had it for a couple years- always tightly closed) but its quite dried up! I've looked for denatured alchohol but don't know how to use it or where to buy it!!!

I haven't watched the video yet but to answer the question - no, you don't need one, I don't have one (far too expensive on this side of the world coming in at around $50 to $60) and have survived two years without one using painters tape to stick down the dies. Will now watch the video and see what you have to say :)

Good Afternoon Lindsay. You mentioned something in this video that I have been researching for weeks now and can't seem to find the answer I want unless it pertains to soda cans. However I want a metal that is a little bit thicker and more dense than a soda can for making earrings and pendants and such. I did go to Menards and purchased a sheet of metal (.025), but it didn't cut, just embossed and that was the thinnest the store sells. Can you please advise what type of sheet metal and the thickness or gauge and perhaps demo it in a video if you haven't already. I love your videos and started watching them about a year ago, mostly the watercolor videos and polymer clay videos. I need to start watching more of your card making videos they are so gorgeous and I have no clue how to do them. Owning 2 different machines and several die cuts, I figure it is time to learn how to make cards...LOL! Have a great day in Maine. I would love to visit there sometime, I hear it is gorgeous, but wow, that cold weather brrrrr, don't think I could handle that. I live in Ohio and we have had some very decent winters the last 4-5 years, but Ohio's weather the old saying goes can change on a dime. We even had a few snow flurries in June a few years back, weird huh? Keep up the AWESOME videos and thank you so much, I learn quite a lot from you.

I have the magnetic platform, it's seems to work fine even with the bowed plate. I don't use it all the time because I forget or I get tired of changing platforms. I do think it is a great idea. I use dryer sheets on my intricate dies it just pulls all of those little pieces right out and I don't have to poke anything.lol Hugs

Hi Lindsay I thought of getting one of this too but I heard that e magnetic is so strong that if u put hand phone or something that hv magnetic strip like credit card it can erase all info inside & it's not recommend to use if u hv pace maker.

I bet it would, i was careful not to have it near my camera. I would not use it with a pacemaker, there is a warning on the order page.

Hi Lindsay, great video. I have purchased a big shot plus and along with that I purchased a precision base plate and a extended magnetic plate. now I found out that those two are not recommended with the plus could you tell me why I know they are not as wide, but will it damage my big shot plus if I use then on it. hmm, maybe it is a good idea to have pressure all along the rollers and that is why?I am not sure, I only have the standard but when I used the Accucut pro models at my sisters craft store they say to sent the dies through on an angle probably because it gets allthe roller uses and evens the pressure. Those do not use cutting pads tho. I would contact Sizzix/ellison and see what they say. You don;t want to harm the machine

I wish I had read this before I bought my precision base plate. I tried mine this morning and nothing happened, no cut, emboss, nothing. I then went on you tube and the sixxiz guy says it will work in most of the sizzix machines, but not recommended for the big shot plus..... I had watched a different video before receiving my machine that demonstrated the do's and don'ts of the machines and they said the precision plate would work on the plus machine. I can't get it to do anything at all. Have you tried yours, did it do anything? Also the multipurpose platform with the new machine is not like for the regular big shot, instead of tabs that are all connected so you don't lose them, each one is separate. You have the basic platform then a real think pink adapter and green adapters marked A and B. I tried everything and could not get the precision plate to cut my intricate die, so then I tried just my old spellbinder cutting plates, still didn't work. I took the precision plate out, used the regular instructions for cutting the dies, and it worked fine so I know it wasn't my die. If it will fit, I may try it on my 6" spellbinders platinum machine. Did you ever contact sizzix like Lindsay mentioned? What did they say? Thanks for your comment and your help, I will start reading more comments on this plus machine before I buy anything else even if a different video says I can use it.

Actually don't use wax paper, the wax builds up over time & can ruin your dies, Cheery Lynn has a good video on this. If you need to use something use a plastic bag that's cut to fit.

I love my magnetic platform. Honestly before I got it I wasn't interest in the thin dies because the post it note or washi tape method never seemed to work well for me, especially if I was going to use something like an alphabet to spell something- that is a lot of tape. I cannot imagine making a DIY version only because the magnet has to be strong enough to hold the die in place OVER the cutting pad. I would consider this a MUST HAVE item for anyone who likes to die cut but I would wait for a good price- 40% off coupon, Sizzix.com 40% or 50% off sale or Blitsy .

Danee Kaplan yeah, there are a lot of magnets, rare earth ones I think, in he platform. I considered DIYing my original platform by using hubbys drill press, magnets and epoxy but never got to it. I really like it!

So what about the electronic cutting machines?! I've been debating getting one, and then which one to get. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars and not like it, or not use it (like some people have said).

Jennifer Szerszynski it depends on what you want to do, do you want to use cartridges? Use a computer to design? Simple stamp, scan and cut? There are so many options out there. i am using an old cricut because I was lucky enough to get scal2 software when it was available so I can cut all my fonts and clip art from my computer but I would not recommend a cricut due to their restrictions now. Lots of people like the Silhouette, I thought the elcips was a good machine and you can use ecal software or cartridges which are not to high in price. The brother scan n cut looks good for stampers. I don't know what is right for you though.

I kind of like the idea of using a computer to design it. I don't think I want to be limited to cartridges. Haha. I'm still not sure.

This is great, but money is a problem, when your on a fix income. So I like this machine, but I'll still have to cut by hand for now. But I do like that machine it looks like it will do things that would other wise be to much trouble to even full with. Thank You

Do you think the die cut machines are better than a brothers type of machine that scans and cuts, if so why. .I’m in the process of starting my business but I want The best and most reliable machines. I will need them most to cut pattern designs. I’m concerned that the adhesive mat used with the brothers machine will eventually cause rips and tares in my pattern papers. That is a big concern because the paper I will be using is somewhat expensive, so I can’t really afford to waste paper. What are the pros and cons of the machine used in this video?

Lindsay, I've got a question, that no one seems to be able to answer for me. So of course I've come to you. I have a cuttlebug and have had no problem using it with any dies. I really want to get a flip it die (Stephanie Barnard, thin die) found one on amazon for a really good price. Anyway, do you know if it will work in the Cuttlebug? Most dies say it can be used with a cuttlebug, big shot, vagabond, etc, but these dies don't. I need to wait to get a big shot, but really want one of those die's. Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Camille

December I purchased 2 new dies I brought the Hobby Craft own brand die and Sizzix big shot plus, since using my hobby Craft die I have gone through 4 sets of cutting plates for hobby Craft machine, someone recommended using a shim to protect the plates but how do you use them please Thank you Tracy x

But Lindsay, you cut into your magnetic platform using your frame let's, is this OK? I always thought the mag. platform was supposed to be used with the acrylic plate. I enjoy your videos, you US craffers have so much more stamps& dies etc.to choose from😥😥

i did not cut into my platform, you do need to use a plate on each side of your die.

Kane Louise it is not enough pressure to cut, I tried it:) If you live in the USA you can use a coupon on the die cutters at the big box stores.

Deirdre Powers You so not need the plate, use the platform for now and see if you really need it, you can tape the die to the paper to keep it from moving as well. I do recommend a metal shim (steel) at some time.

Michelle avery start with want you enjoy most! Then when you have started to build an inventory sign up for a craft fair or start listing things on etsy. You can get a feel for what you enjoy doing and what sells. Consumables are good because they sell well (soap, lip balm, greeting cards) and inexpensive jewelry sells well too but there are a lot of jewelry makers at craft fairs so lots of competition.

Eeyore_Chick not for quilting but I have cut fabric for applique on clothing and embellishments on other crafts. I have only tried my think dies but I hear the thin ones will work too.

What else can I do to facilitate removing the cut paper from the dies? Sometimes the kind of paper matters more than other times; still, I've yet to try anything outside the range of "copy paper" all the way to cardstock (pad from Michael's, textured on one side and plain on the other). I've tried your trick of cutting waxed paper with the die. I've tried rubbing the die with the waxed paper. I tried using several layers of waxed paper. Elsewhere (other videos) suggested using dryer sheets, even layering those, but my (perfectly flat and nearly new from the package) dies just won't release the paper consistently. Some refuse to release it at all. Maybe I expect too much, but I wouldn't call these dies terribly intricate. Any thoughts? Maybe silicone spray? I'm frustrated enough that I've pretty well given up on the dies and have gone with an assortment of paper punches.

angelhelp Have you tried different brands of dies or are they all from the same company? I have added ejection foam to my thin dies to help the paper come off, some dies come with it and you can add it or not depending on your preference. I will test it out with self adhesive fun foam and see if it will work and if it works I will post a tutorial. All of the thin dies (sizzlets) used to have this and the paper did not get stuck but I don't think it will work with super thin dies. Also what die cutter are you using?

thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich My diecutter is a bigshot, like yours but a later model with the tabbed platform. The dies are from different companies. Ejection foam sounds interesting; I've never heard of it. I eagerly await the tutorial! :)

Jeanie Gregory the platform is about 6"x9" but a longer one is available, the machine itself is about 8"x12"

i just got one and it wont cut anything without having a few sheets of fun foam and a magnetic sheet and the detailed dies wont cut at all..Has anyone had them problem? I have the vintage big kick machine.

+Cole Patrick huh, you need you use the cutting pads too same as always, I did not need any shimms but you can use a steel plate if you need a tighter sandwitch.
