Hello, I am avoiding creating a website because I really don’t think my art is up to scratch and I have a solid portfolio yet. I also don’t completely get how to create a collection. I did watch your process on creating a collection but am still trying to come up with ideas for any subject that I pick. So still in the learning zone 😊

I so appreciate your clear explanations! Okay, here’s my question: I keep seeing designers say things like “contact me for my password protected portfolio.” I’m confused. Wouldn’t I want to put my best pieces on my website rather than hide them away? Also, how many pieces should be on my website portfolio? Thanks!

Great questions! It's true that some people do have private galleries, but I agree that putting your best art out for all to see is important, and I only really think a private gallery is necessary if you have a LOT of art and are getting pretty frequent requests from potential clients to see it. Otherwise you can easily send PDFs to show off handpicked art (for example, if they ask you if you have any Halloween art) to potential clients. As for how many pieces...it depends on how many you have total, but usually I'd say 20 is enough, and you can start with as little as 8-10.

The thing that has been holding me back with making a website and many other steps in my business are the costs. I try to avoid monthly subscriptions because I am bootstrapping my business so I don't want money draining away every month as I am just trying to get consistent income. What are your thoughts on that? I have one business interested in licensing my work and she said"let's connect" but I don't even know my next step 😅😅😅

This is a really good question- and I think a lot of people can relate so I'm glad you asked. I hear you on the not wanting to invest in something that's not making you money yet rationale. Real (potentially harsh) talk coming: Running your own art business from home, it's easy to have a hobby mentality and hope that it becomes a career via magic dust. And sure, it's possible. But if you were in a different biz, you wouldn't say "I'm not making any money as restaurant owner yet, so I'm not going to lease a space or invest in tables, chairs or getting menus printed." You have to COMMIT to having a business if you want one, and that includes some necessary expenses. A website is one of them in my opinion. Look for local small business grants or loans if the subscription is beyond your means, or set aside some money from your day job each week until you can afford it. And as it sounds like you're doing, you can get started on other initiatives in the meantime, or you can also potentially start with free options like Behance or Dribbble but you don't own those sites and can't control as much.

Great video and at a great time. I definitely answered yes to all of your questions. I just started working on a website for my portfolio but I will be honest, I don’t do social media. Do I need to do both? Like, I love Pinterest but the other ones, sigh, just not for me. I’m not on social media other than Facebook and I don’t use it lol. What all do I need? What are the musts?

My advice is do what's manageable at this time. Better to get started and move forward then to get stuck because Instagram is too stressful for you and it's sending you into a procrastination spiral. In Start Your Surface Pattern Business, I do recommend at least a presence on a few key sites, but the website is by far the most important and again, what's achievable for you is what you really need.

I've just found your channel, and thank you so much for sharing this information. I am pretty active on social media, and I have built a small following. My question is this, I already have a website where I sell my artwork. Can I just add a portfolio tab for Surface Pattern Designs, or do I need to create a completely separate website for my surface pattern portfolio?

Such a good question, yes you can just add a tab to your existing website for sure! and If/when you reach out to art directors, give them the direct link to that page rather than your general homepage link so they can get right to the good stuff they want to see!
