If you’re unsure whether you need to compress your mix, you’re probably thinking about things the wrong way. Join Gregory Scott, Kush Audio’s resident plugin and hardware designer, as he screws your head on straight and helps you to understand why you might - and might NOT - want to slap a compressor on your mix buss.

Wow, this is unbelievable, the answer that he had not found for years, in your hands. It was. I was tired of everyone coming and just explaining the buttons and buttons to us. I don't know why exactly, but for mixing-related content, I find that I understand the most when it's just a chill talk and explanation of the subject without showing video of the DAW graphics doing its thing. This is exactly why this channel and SonicScoop with Justin Colletti are my favorite. In that order.

I've watched this video like 30 times. I love you, Gregory. I've been playing music for 25+ years, but I never tried to produce my own work until the pandemic hit last year. For those of us who are primarily artists, you are a godsend. You understand the technical aspects of engineering really well, but you know how to speak to artists. Yes, sometimes the words and the concepts used by artists are less precise compred to the technical jargon used by engineers. But if we cannot use language in a flexible manner, then we can't actually talk about art. Plain and simple. Thank you brother!
@jahnbon
@jahnbon 3 года назад
I absolutely love the way you speak about how music should sound BEFORE processing. Some of the best records of all time were made with minimal equipment. It's all about capturing a performance, first and foremost. The best recording engineers in history knew how to capture the best take, and then use what few pieces of outboard gear available to them to subtly enhance that performance, using their expertise in an effort to bring the listener 'into the room.' I am 58, had my first paying gigs at 14, and then began playing clubs at 15, in 1977. I'm a lifer. As a result of my 44 years in the trenches, I have a few of my own insights into studio technique, etc, but I never tire of your cogent and original take on music recording. I wish I had some of your advice decades earlier! Thanks for sharing the benefits of your experience in such a relaxed and personable manner. Keep 'em coming!

Out of alllll the RU-vid mixing tutorials, advice, and tips 'n' tricks, this channel is the most valuable to me. There's A LOT of them. There are so many do's and don'ts and it can all be so overwhelming. Especially when everyone and their grandma have videos claiming they know "the right way" to do things. Most of the time they just repeat something they heard from someone else's content(most of which are home studios that have never mixed a record in their life). Your videos are the realest, down to Earth bits of advice I've come across and I can't get enough. They always make so much sense and hearing you speak about things, sometimes the words you say just click. Fuck the "rules". Thank you so much for your content! You will always have my support.

Hi Gregory First of all. Thank you. As a drummer, composer, actor, director, heal care worker, drama teacher and introvert I finally found someone that speaks my language and can explain what I'm doing. I am enjoying HappyFuntimeHour. It's like sitting at a table with friends without having the need to say anything. I have a question I keep struggling with. Automation. This is what I do after summing up all I found on internet. I start a mix and have the whole thing balanced as well as I can do. Then I go into hyper-focus mode, right brain kicks in doing all sorts of 'hey that sounds cool" tomfoolery trying to make a chorus more exciting, adding more fx, taking it away riding the EQ and then an hour later I end up with a postmodern squiggely line painting that has lost all meaning and structure and I feel like it all got way to complicated. Creativeness has made the thing a mess. So much so I want to start over. I'm missing structure but I don't know where to start and finish. And no, I am not on drugs. Can you explain in UBK-nese how you go about automation? Forgive me if the language thing is not spot on. I'm half Irish/dutch, that should explain that. Lots of love, P.M. O'Sullivan

well i just learned a lot. i'm definitely better at recording than mixing currently. working my way up to being a solid mix engineer, and the mix buss my challenge right now, so this was magical. It never even occurred to me to think of transients as being high frequencies, (which they obviously are) and to use a buss compressor to blend them appropriately. sheesh. it would've taken me years to notice that. kinda embarassing, but oh well. I like that the first priority of these videos is to think about things correctly, and that means ways that help.

One technique I’ve learned from mastering is to make changes to your track with a master bus compressor engaged. I take the same approach with all of my mixes: put a compressor on my master (with extremely subtle settings-slow attack, fast release, only around 1db of gain reduction) as I build and tweak an entire mix. In doing this, I’m giving myself a slightly more transparent and accurate experience as I mix, which helps me make better decisions along the way. Like Mr. Scott said, all of this stuff is subjective; take my process with a grain of salt! These methods work for me, but they are by no means the gospel on how to mix!

"Is this thing I am doing amplifying the emotional effect?"... Well, that is also subjective.
@TheHouseofKushTV
@TheHouseofKushTV 3 года назад
Right, but it's much more easily and readily answerable and knowable, it just requires that you stop thinking about mental concepts like "necessity" and start listening to and feeling the language of your body, heart, and emotional center. Put another way, "is this necessary?" is an academic question of no value here. "Does this process or change or effect make me feel something meaningful?" ends the conversation you're having with your mind, and begins the conversation you ought to be having with the song.
@slavesforging5361
@slavesforging5361 3 года назад
yup! Good observation and That's exactly the point, to understand and accept that what we're doing is subjective, then use that understanding to ask ourselves the right question. Which is, 'what does it do to the change effect the song has on the listener'? of course, the only guide you have in this is yourself. you'll never know the effect it has on others like you know what effect it has on you. that's what makes it art. it's inherent subjectiveness. the point is to Not try to turn something that is inherently art into something that is definitive and factual. music is about feelings and emotions. maybe producers don't want to trust their feelings and emotions about music... but that mentality isn't art. what they're seeking is science to validate their feelings. rather than trusting their feelings and expressing them as a love offering to the world. (what artists do). maybe more akin to a mechanical engineer than a mixing engineer. (as far as the ratio of art:science, subjective:objective, feeling:fact or whatever we choose to call it). mechanical engineering is not without art, but it generally has a lower art to fact ratio than musical engineering. and musical engineering is not without it's 'this is the physics of sound and it behooves us to understand it' qualities as well.

That’s why the only hardware I own is a RED 3 Focusrite. In a complete mix today you don’t need any hardware, plugins are mature to the point you can achieve a professional mix if you are a mixing engineer with experience. In fact with your experience you can compensate and find the sound you search with plugins and track per track it works great today. For the bus master it’s another story and that’s why I recommend to people buying a real bus compressor. I tried many plugins on a bus master and every time a hardware compressor won. As you explained, the bottom and specially the bass take is place in a second with a hardware bus master. I never had the same results with plugins…

This was really informative and very useful. In the future, can you address mixing into a mix buss chain? Outside of the genre of music somewhat defining this decision prior to mixing, can you provide more insight?
@TheHouseofKushTV
@TheHouseofKushTV 3 года назад
Oh, great question and I WILL hit this one up in an episode because here's the thing: I hate mixing into processors on the mix buss. I will build my mix until it sounds really quite good, if a bit bland and unexciting, maybe like 75% done. Then I insert my hardware for some saturation and a more lively timbre, tweak the mix for a bit now that things are more contained. I'Il put the mix buss compressor on when I'm maybe 90% done, squeeze it for movement and density and tighter transients, then spend another hour or so making verrry delicate adjustments to things, tucking in stuff that's hitting the comp a bit too hard, pushing other things farther out to feel the comp pushing back, I love that feeling. So yeah, there is no single workflow or truth for any of this stuff, and while it is true that many people like mixnig into the comp (etc.) from the outset, I very much do not and lord knows I've tried more times than I can count. I seem to enjoy building a mix like a house of cards, and don't fare too well if I try to get ahead of myself!
@timmacdonald8141
@timmacdonald8141 3 года назад
When you mix into this bus compressor....it brings up the bass when the drums stop.....making musical solos pop....when the drummer settles down. No need to vume automate. It works so well with well arranged songs.....like when the piano and singer go solo for 4 measures.....or the bass and violin do solos lol. The bouncing of that compressor makes the music move. It's very hard to explain. You gotta see his original how to hear compression video. I believe it covers the bus compressor.

Awesome advice. I've been finding in my songs, when they aren't even finished, the dbs are getting too high on master even when I have everything mixed to -12db on each track. It's getting close to -3db on master channel and I can't figure out how when I'm lowering gain to -12db on my tracks. I've tried using mix bus compressing and I'm still finding the sweet spot. This definitely sounds like it could help a bit. Great video.
@TheHouseofKushTV
@TheHouseofKushTV 3 года назад
Track gain isn't really relevant, because if all your tracks are recorded at -30dBFS then you could park all your channel faders at 0 and still not clip the mix buss. Conversely, if all your individual tracks are slammed to 0dBFS and you have 50 tracks playing at a time, you'll need to pull all your channel faders down to like -24dBFS and even then you'll still probably clip the mix buss. Sound energy is multiplicative and it adds up fast. Two tracks recorded at -3dBFS and summed together will probably overload the mix buss. Long story short: if pulling all your channel faders down to -12dBFS doesn't give you enough headroom on the mix buss, you need to pull your channel faders down more 😛

Dear Gregory Scott , you are a master of the art! an eye opener to learn how you think about tools such as compression! thanks so much for showing us whether we should or not in a scientific way yet with an artistic approach..... would be an even deeper lesson for me if you could show us with an audio example when possible in the future..... also a question for you: sometimes when i use like a manley vari mu kind of compressor plugin on mix bus and only have 1-2db of compression, with a mid slow attack and fairly fast release, i am unable to hear much of a change in sound when i bypass the plugin, so how can we hear the subtlest of compression and if its so subtle would it be ok to do more than just 1 db of compression, bec if the effect of gluey compression is barely audible to me, how can it really have an impact on the overall feel of the song.......

Thank you very much for making these video's. i really like how you explain the more difficult parts. I have a question. I have a few mono synths. How do you prefer to "widen" the recorded monotracks in the mix. What do you think are the best ways to approach the "widening" of the audio tracks? And what are the possible problems or Dont's during the process? i know that panning and then different short delays on both sides is a trick. and i tried some other effects like reverb or chorus.. But i wonder how a Pro like you does this. I hope this is a topic you want to talk about. Eitherway thank you very much for making video's like this!! Gr. Martin

Oh, innnteresting question! Truthfully? I almost never want to 'widen' a source, but if I do it'll either be with a big old ping-pong delay which also makes the sound wet/deep (think classic moog worm kinda solo) or it'll be with something you mentioned, short fast echo or reflection. Sometimes 100% wet on a simple hall or plate is good, but again, that's to push it back as much as spread it out. The thing that I generally want to widen is the MIX, the whole soundfield, not a synth. I like my synths dry, esp. monosynths because they're such a classic thing and dry just feels right. So if I want a monosynth dry and wide, I will double the part. Different but compatible synth patch (often from a different synth), sometimes play the double an octave up or down. You do that --- get two similar but different sounds playing the same thing, possibly in a different register --- and you pan them out... try it, thank me later. No effect on the planet can do what that does so effortlessly. Rock and guitars have been doing it forever, it's no secret, but it works on anything. 😊
