The character of Mary Livingstone from the Jack Benny Program worked at the May Company, which became a long-time running gag. And when the TV show began, they loved going by the classic Hollywood store at Fairfax and Wilshire, which became the Academy of Motion Pictures museum, keeping the old storefront. I haven't been there since it was still the May Company, but I'm looking forward to doing so someday.
I worked at the May company located in Arcadia California while I was in college in 1981. It's sad that that building is sitting there unoccupied and suffering some vandalism. Does anyone know if there are any plans for that property? It's located on Sunset and Mitchalinda in Arcadia.
I live 2 blocks from the MayCo now Macys Crenshaw Plaza mall. It’s still though although the mall itself is on sale and maybe sold. The Macy is the only anchor left of that mall since Sears closed two years ago and Walmart closed years before.
Ah yes may the company that if around today would have provided variety to are modern lack luster line up of department stores. Sucks they were again bought out and turned into Macy's but it was good to hear about there inception which was the purchase of the hamburger company what a great name.
Here's what happened to the former May Company stores after their 1993 closures: 6:50 The West Covina store at Eastland Center is now demolished for a Target store. Alongside, the existing store basement is now Burlington Coat Factory. (A new Robinsons-May store opened in October 1993 at West Covina Mall, now Macy's) 6:55 The Buena Park store later became Fedco and closed in 1999 (store is now demolished and replaced with a Walmart in 2003) 6:58 The San Bernardino store at Inland Center Mall became Gottschalks in April 1995 which closed in 2009 (now JCPenney). Funny thing, five years after May Company's closure in SB, Robinsons-May opened a new store on the Inland Center Mall's west side in November 1998 (now Macy's).
There was a May Company in North Hollywood where I worked from 1987 to 1989. At the time, May Company was merging with Robisons. The May Company was located at the Laurel Plaza in North Hollywood. I actually worked for accounting paying for all the utility bills for all the stores.
Alexander I worked @ Robinsons May Downtown LA in fall on 1997. One of the Department Managers mentioned that a new store was going to open in San Bernardino. November of 1998 sounds right . Both she and store Manager transfered to San Bernardino since they lived in SB and would make the trip to DTLA daily.
