@janestratton8219 This is exactly why this worries me. Time can change your outlook. I just worry that some who choose this could have a different thought process in a couple of years. That being said if a person is of age and mentally competent then it doesn't matter what I, or others think. They should have the autonomy to do what they choose.

Rosina was my friend, and I saw her deteriorate over time, not having enough to eat and live with dignity. It's such a sad reality. The help she needed, including the meds and assistance due to disability weren't available. It was a lot of loneliness, being made to feel useless and a burden when asking for help. It was tragic, to say the least. I was with her the last night of her life till 2am.
@micgooflander95
@micgooflander95 9 месяцев назад
I'm glad Rosina had the right not to be forced to continue to suffer. Just forcing people to live does not solve the problem of loneliness, lack of benefits, inadequate access to medical care, etc. All you're doing when you force someone to live against their will (i.e. prevent them from accessing effective, risk-free and painless suicide methods through some channel - whether that be the healthcare system or any other) is punish that individual for the way that they've been failed by society. That cannot be the right answer. That cannot be the humane answer. Ultimately, each individual should have the right to choose whether they want to live; not be forced to serve as political chess pieces.

Many simply want their lives to be better, for more home care, better medical care and more social interaction. The first gentleman may have misunderstood, many people would be concerned, others seeing how worn down he seemed. Forgetting to return smiles with others signals far too much isolation. With terminal or intolerable conditions, at least 3 persons should certify approval,- a panel of three with members allotted (shuffled) to each case randomly,- made up of a lawyer or judge, a senior physician and a layperson. Pain relief training must be improved or have a dedicated unit in all bigger hospitals. Medicines can make a great deal of difference. Therapies need to be reviewed. Many retraumatise patients and some are vicarious for the therapist. Teaching coping systems and shaping moving into an improved future are most often a better route for non-terminal patients. That govts find bumping people off whose lives could have been turned around is a sad indictment of our society.

May Allah swt rest her soul. So heartbreaking to think that because of society's obsession with capitalism and money that the option of simply dying is put out there for those who are suffering rather than looking at the root issue and fixing it. Human life is worth more than that and yet here we are deciding which option is more 'cost-effective'. Shame. The Western claims of 'progressiveness' and 'humanitarians' are being exposed day by day.

A lot of spin in this story. Cue the sad music and loaded questions. This woman had physical suffering, all family far away. She said maybe if she had friends and no stress she would want to live. A country can't just give someone a bunch of friends. And even if they did have people sit with her every day there is no guarantee she would be happy. I would give anything to have this in my country, the U.S. Things are really messed up, I agree. If we gave everyone $35k a year and a rich social life - maybe Sweden does that?, yes maybe that would save some. Who even knows, but that is not our world. I wish it was. But what do we do with this world, not an imaginery one. I would love a socialist utopia. What if we never get one?

'One should die proudly when it is no longer possible to live proudly'. My mother received MAID 4 days ago. She found out she had Stage 4 lung cancer (very advanced) and metastase everywhere one month and a half ago. She lost all her autonomy in the blink of an eye. She didn't want to wait to be in pain and with no chance to get better, she choose this option. She could not deal with the fact that she had to rely on others for all her needs. We respected and welcomed her decision. She left so peacefully. I am so happy for her she was eligible for MAID. RIP Mommy.

Having a psychiatrist is non existent here in Canada. You are able to have up to six appointments with a psychiatrist and that is it. Psychotherapy is only available if you have private insurance. People with mental illness, who don’t have help available to them, should not be able to decide between life or death. Canada needs to take care of its people who suffer with mental illness. A person with a medical condition shouldnt have to die cuz they are too poor to afford helping themselves. Canada has a lot of programs. But none are sufficiently funded. People with medical conditions literally struggle to not become homeless. The country is punishing the poor again. In my homecountry, u can get assisted death as well. I too know people who left our world this way. But it is stricter than Canada. Usually only when u are in deep pain the government will assist you. We luckily almost erased poverty in my country, so nobody asks for assisted death simply cuz they are too poor. That isnt the case in canada unfortunately. Canada somehow created an eat-or-get-eaten mentality like the US in the past 2 decades. There is a woman from toronto that was working full time, got intentionally coughed at during the pandemic, and now she has longcovid that makes it impossible for her to work fulltime to pay her bills. She is askin the government now to help her die. And she shouldnt have to just cuz the government keeps kicking the bucket to the less wealthy or more vulnerable folks. Most of these folks wanna live but poverty makes it hard. Nice day

@@conan.seto995 Poverty has been an issue for all of human history. There will always be poverty. Yes, the government's job should always to be solve issues like that, but at the same time allow people choose their fate. You could always be against assisted dying because economic and medical problems will always exist. But the question is why does the government control your life. We will never fix life's core problems. Just give people the option.

I am 77 years old. I’m glad they are extending MAID and hope I have access to it before I become too disabled and have to move to a nursing home. I worked as a registered nurse for 50 years, 16 of those in nursing homes. I know what I’m talking about. Some people become so tired of suffering that they would rather die and I support that fully. It’s better than having to commit suicide. It should be a choice available to each individual but with guidance and directing to other available resources like mental health care, medical care, etc. if they so chose. I disagree in that people are not getting adequate healthcare. Might be a choice later in life but what about those who are younger and suffering from an inadequate and inaccessible healthcare system? Disabled continue to be the ones living in the deepest poverty. If the choice is between living with dignity and dying with dignity then most would choose the former. Give people the supports and care they need - not death as an option. There are reports detailing the cost savings of MAiD to our healthcare system .. people should question this more.

It's safer, more compassionate and less intensive on resources if a self attempt fails and they require hospital care to recover. There is something of a debate around whether or not people should be able to choose “death by donation” wherein people with intolerable suffering eligible for euthanasia can instead choose to die by having their organs removed to transplant to those who do want to live. In some ways it sounds like a terrific idea, but ultimately I tend to think we have to make 100% sure someone is doing this for themselves alone.

Rosina’s story makes me particularly sad because of the fact that it was easier for her to end her life than it was for her to access food, proper medical care, an adequate support system, etc. I fear that legalizing MAID will come with major consequences. It should not be easier to access MAID than a wheelchair. If we are going to make this legal, major reform is so necessary. I wish we lived in a world where people who are suffering could have access to a dignified death, but I just fear the risks that come along with legalizing this are far too high. Option 1: living with mental illness Option 2: death Option 3: being at minimum properly cared for with dignity and omitting poverty and food scarcity and homelessness, or best case scenario, cured isn't an option. It's a wish, a dream, a fantasy. Making people wait for that, when it's not even in the works on any level, is cruel. The suffering is real, and it's now. Other countries have found incredibly appropriate ways to care for, house, feed, give dignity to those with disabilities so the answers are mostly available. It's government and greedy corporations choosing profits over people or wasting tax dollars or starving our Healthcare system of funding. Money is the God that is worshipped in all of North America over anything else. It is humanmade, and it is humankilling. To those corporations and government officials, my message is: just because you can, doesn't mean you should! Find your moral compass and do better. People before profits, always, as a bare minimum for living standards.

Can we please please PLEASE stop calling this Dying With Dignity! There is nothing about this process that is dignified. It is government coerced death. It is a cost savings to our healthcare system. They don't care if you live in the deepest poverty imaginable - the government supports for disabled are about $1200 a month. But average rent in our nation is about double that, and due to exploding population growth (our government allows over a million newcomers a year in international students and immigration). This is a goldmine for landlords who are jacking prices up every chance they get. This is displacing our disabled and senior population. It increases demand on a healthcare system that is already buckling due to aging infrastructure. Our government knows this and is signing off on expanded MAiD to allow for an out due to suffering caused by disability + poverty. They say there are safeguards to prevent it - but talk to those in the disability community and they say they are feeling coerced. Many have of us now have to choose between medical, housing and food to survive. The word that comes to mind is EUGENICS. They are calling it Dying with Dignity but really the focus should be Living with Dignity. The only hope I see is a long promised Canada Disability Benefit by the federal government. Unfortunately this has been delayed for over 3 years. During the pandemic our Liberal leaders provided CERB, an emergency relief benefit to working individuals. Those with disability received nothing! So now the cost of food and housing has almost doubled and those without money, those suffering due to medical conditions get MAiD. Thanks for nothing Canada! Oh, and if you are thinking to move here expecting a Canadian dream .. really think again. Canada is not as advertised.

Forcing people to live in pain (mental or physical) against their will does nothing to solve the "living with dignity" issue. All it does is punish those at the bottom for the fact that they've been failed by society. People should ALWAYS have had the right to access effective suicide methods; as there is no autonomy in life without the right to opt out of living without the government interfering with that choice. If not for paternalistic suicide prevention schemes; then we would not be needing the government to act as the gatekeeper for who is allowed to avail themselves of MAID. By opposing MAID, all you are doing is building a prison for yourself, and for everyone else, and inviting the government to throw away the key. You aren't adding any extra options, or improving the options available. You're just striving to take away an option that you might personally be desperate for in the future. Meanwhile, all of your non-disabled 'allies' will forget all about your suffering once MAID has been seen off; and your plight will be once again out of sight and out of mind. Because the media (including Al Jazeera and the correspondent for this piece) is only willing to pretend to care about your plight in as far as they can use it to advance their illiberal agenda against bodily autonomy.

It infuriates me that there are doctors the world over who push families and patients into "pulling the plug" or getting euthanized - there are straight-up sociopaths in the medical industry. In Canada, there was a woman in her 30s who had MS who kept being pressured by doctors and nurses into MAID. In the US, my mother and I were blackmailed into signing a DNR for my father (which we never did) before they would restart his dialysis and other procedures to prolong his life - they initially brought us in for the express purpose of pulling his plug, and they were angered that we chose not to as my father wanted heroic measures taken to preserve his life.

Now that assisted dying is legal… and my brother-in-law benefited from it as well as 3 other friends who were suffering intolerably and terminally ill, I am thankful for the help they received and for the opportthey that had to be surrounded by their loved ones while they went on their own terms.On the other hand, loneliness and poverty are not incurable diseases and we as a society need to learn to take care of our most vulnerable and we need to find ways to cure loneliness and poverty. They are the biggest cause of mental illness today and there is NO reason for that. Let’s take action!

Thats true if one person doesent find Allah in his heart, he will reach nothing in life. And a person has to be clean, and healthy. I always look at the people who are at war ecpecially the people of palestina. They call upon Allah even if their whole family has died i front of their eyes. Subhanallah. I also had a relative like this. He wanted to die and was always lifeless and he never smiled. So I decided to take him to the routine that I do. I took hin to the mountains in my homeland where we keep cattle and work in fresh air and high mountains and people with discipline minded set. I woke him up at 5 am, I told him to wash himself, do wudu, and pray with me, then we got ready , ate a little organic honey, and we made or way to the field to milk the cows. After that we finished all work around the house, talked to elderly people, laughed, runned in the fields, and later we all in the village met in the local mosque to pray and we made many friends. So we bought him back to the path which he needed to be and now he is a healthy man, works, helps the village very much, studies a lot and is now a great person. You just need the right people around you. I belive depression doesent exist, it's just an illusion like atheism. Like what's the point on being then, it's all useless right ? No allhamdullilah in Islam, we know why we are here what we need to do and what awaits us. Salamualejkum

Its been incredibly difficult but thankfully I have never wanted to die. MAID because of mental illness is heartbreaking. I don't know how I feel about it yet. I'm 30 and I've been wanting this for awhile. People have to understand that you don't have to be mentally ill to want this. The biggest choice/freedom we have every day is waking up & living. We've forced women to carry kids and put rules on abortions etc in many countries. the least we can do is offer the human brought into the world a choice. I feel if I accomplish the things I've wanted to & contributed what I feel I could, then I'm at peace. I was brought back one before & truthfully when I slipped away it wasn't scary. I knew I was dying. It was shocking to be woken up a month later & realize I was in fact alive. I wasn't happy about it honestly because the moments before death were very peaceful & beautiful. Yes dying can be a beautiful thing the same as someone being born.

Yes, don't judge. And keep in mind that there's a difference between situational depression and clinical depression. For instance, you have a breakup and you have some suicidal thoughts. Or a loved one passes away and you can't get a grip... these are situational. They can and do lead to suicide sometimes but usually a person can begin to cope and get better. Clinical depression is more medical. A disease/disorder. So even if it appears a person has everything and has a great life, they are still depressed! And people judge them for it!

It's so strange that the most developed countries suffer the most depression. Assisted suicide? What happened to cyanide pills? In Africa, we don't have such. Poor as we are. Suicide isn't a solution. A spiritual sickness of sorts this. Deny or not... it's not normal. The lady even says , "If she had some people around her, to even talk with her... she can deal with the pain". It's not okay to live alienated lives. In my Zulu Tribe we have an expression " Kuhlekwa noma Kufiwe".. literally meaning we laugh even in death. It's so say, no matter how difficult things get, always find the bright side of it.

@Chappelroanfan in my language we call sadness "ukudabuka". A heart that is broken. They've tried to adopt the word "depression" to "ukucindezeleka" meaning a heaviness of the heart. A heavy heart is addressed. So it doesn't equate to depression You cant be so sad you want to die. Death is a transition that you can't facilitate to do it is a sin for us. These days suicide is normalized. It isn't normal. Death comes after a long life naturally or death as God sees fit in many ways. We believe in family...unity of people.. Ubuntu.
