I think one thing that makes it really difficult is that when trying to find techniques and looks that are flattering for eye shapes that don't fit the trends, is that when searching for "hooded eyes", or "downturned eyes", or "deep set eyes", etc, there are VASTLY more videos on camouflaging/hiding/fixing these issues instead of celebrating/enhancing/highlighting them.
Yeah! I get so annoyed when (basically good) tips are introduced with "how to make hooded eyes not look hooded and therefor prettier". 😵💫 And you know, why do we always have to do our makeup so that we look "happier", "more awake" and "friendly" etc? What if I sometimes want to be okay with my sad and droopy eyes and just run with it??! 😍
I’d love to see you do an eye look on two models with different eye shapes and demonstrate what you’d do differently. Maybe with looks that are still similar but still tailored for their eye shape. Love your content-it’s so helpful!
Saaaame, though by far from my first time because I am ze olde, it was probably the first time I really understood how to work with all the different areas around my eye instead of just following a tutorial
I love that you are so real and so honest! I am soooo sick of the whole " We all have to look the same, and you aren't beautiful unless you look like this" Bulls$#@! Why can't we all be individuals like we are supposed to be.... The center hair part thing is "In" now, and I'm here to tell you that I look Ridiculous with my hair like that, and it's OKAY! Anyway, I'll stop my rant.. I love your videos Alex, I'm obsessed!
As a very olive-skinned EAsian person with monolid eyes - NO visible crease when my eyes are open - and an epicanthal fold - man I wish I'd seen this early on when I was getting into makeup. It's so hard not to get discouraged when nothing you see seems to work for you. I live in the US and my adoptive family is all white, so trying to figure out what I'm doing at any given time has taken a *while*. This look is gorgeous, btw, it reminds me of moth wings and it highlighted the colors in your eyes in the coolest way
A really fun thing to do when you have a huge chunk of invisible space when your eyes are wide open, is to have some bright and fun color in the hidden space. That way every time you blink it gives a really cool color flash. There was some monolid redditor/instagrammer I learned this "trick" from. I don't have a monolid, just a lot of disappearing space, and seeing that was the first time I ever finally got to see the hidden space as an opportunity instead of a waste
Hey hey, monolids here and omg I feel your struggle. I never wore makeup all through my teen years because there were NO resources. Google the "vertical gradient" for monolids. It was totally game changing for me. I've been using variations on vertical gradients ever since. Attempting to put a darker shadow through where our "crease" aka orbital bone is just looks so bad 90% of the time.
even in asian beauty especially during the early days of youtube there was little if any monolid representation (funny as I’m typing this, apple doesn’t even recognize monolid as a word). thankfully there are now dozens of video tutorials for monolid eyes. I’ve also seen some beautiful high fashion style makeup with bold stenciling around your eye shape. it works really well because with no crease it’s almost like a “blank canvas” effect that you can get away with drawing the most creative shapes on. I’ve never actually seen the style done in person (I have hooded eyes so it wouldn’t really work on me) but I think it would look so cool
I have a droopy and hooded eye shape and seeing this video made me happy because I tell people this all the time! For anyone that struggles with eyeshadow on hooded eyes, I say don't be afraid to get heavy underneath your eye! A shimmer/glitter on the inner part and a dark lower lash line is my go-to. Sometimes I even put shimmer all over my eyebags to draw attention to them but that's not for everyone because it is quite dramatic haha
Here's Melissa's page if you wanna check out her work instagram.com/melissa.hernandez/ 🙌🏼 The fact that I just left that dark patch on my lid...I'm here to FUCK SHIT UP BRUH
I really need a tutorial for big round prominent eyes with lots of lid space!! I feel like there’s nothing out there at the moment for my eyes and a lot of people focus on hooded eyes etc
Reminds me of going to a vintage festival and getting makeup done. EVERYONE was going for a 50s look - winged eye etc. MUA took one look at me and said, "you have big round eyes - can I do a 20s look cos I'm sick of winged liner!" Everyone else was Bettie Page that day, I was Gloria Swanson 😂
You are my comfort youtuber when i feel sick; i get pretty bad anxiety so i love how your vids are down to earth and chill. No music, no filters, just you talking calmly. Thank you.
Yess, I felt the pixie hairstyle choice. I used to swear I'd never cut my hair that short bc I thought it'd look awful. But then the pandemic hit and I was like "if there's a time to do it, it's now" so I chopped off my hair and I haven't looked back since. Of course I still see people with longer hair and it looks so good on them but I know my hair could never be like that naturally and I have to accept that. I am, however, much happier with my pixie since it looks better with my face shape (plus it's way easier to manage)
Same here. I've had every flavour and length of short hair for years. Grew it out once or twice but can never get past my shoulders. I have a lot of hair but it's very fine and very straight and tangles like a mofo. Now I have an undercut with an asymmetrical top and it just works for me. So easy, suits me, literally wash and wear. All the power to women with long, luscious locks but that ain't me!
@@therealemceekay exactly! what gave me the courage to chop it off was the fact that I didn't leave my house so if it turned out awful, no one had to see it and I'd just have wait for it to grow out
Request: if you mention a celeb or other person in your vids, can you throw up a few pics on screen during your vid for us to quickly relate who or what you're referencing? Thanks! I love your personality! - Raine
it took me took years to realise that i was only doing my eye makeup for my front profile and then i would always see pictures of myself from any other angle and wonder why my makeup looked so weird!! and i realised i'd never seen anyone mention taking your side profile into consideration?? i think when i started experimenting with shapes that looked best for my natural eye shape AND my side profile is around the same time i got more confident with trying more fun colours and stuff :DD
Samee If I do halo eyes it cuts my eye short so from the front it looks good but the side looks so weird ... So now when I wanna do halo eyes I do it in fox like shape than round because then it looks good both front and side
I remember one time Miley said on an interview that a lot of makeup artist used to try to change her eye shape, make her eyes look more elongated or more like almond shape and she would let them until she embraced her round eyes. Thank for bringing an honest and more realistic perspective to the beauty community, it’s always refreshing ✨
This is SO helpful!! It sounds like you get a lot of hooded eye questions, maybe going more in-depth into hooded eye makeup ideas using some examples/actor images? I know for me, I have pretty saggy eyelids and little space and I'm always confused as to not just *lose all the eyeshadow* in the crease. Love all your videos, been watching for years!
I have the same issue and have learned a few techniques. Alex mentioned this - you need to follow along with your eye socket to create your “crease.”. You can feel this bone if you lightly press above your eye. This is where you apply your “crease” color. It will create depth in that area. Putting a light bright color in the middle of your lid (above your Iris) also helps. I usually use gold with warm shadows or silver with cool shadows. Using no shadow or liner at all under the eyes may sound counterintuitive but this also makes a big difference in making hooded eyes look less “sleepy.” I don’t even wear mascara on my lower lashes anymore.
As someone with droopy sad puppy eyes, thank you for the positivity lol! When I first started getting into makeup I found it so frustrating to try to follow the “standard” tutorials for like a cat eye because my eyes are simply Not Built Like That, so it took me just practicing and experimenting on my own to figure out what worked. And also, sometimes embracing the weirder parts of your face with makeup can be really fun! I’ve got close set eyes, and I used to do everything to lighten up my inner corners to make them seems further apart, but recently I’ve been darkening my inner corners and it’s been great! Like, yes, I am built like a flounder, but fuck it, why can’t I put a dark shimmer on my inner corner!
Thank you! I tried the various "snatched"/"foxy" styles for a while and realized that it was just completely fighting my long face and deep-set + Sydney Sweeney shaped eyes. I ended up with a drooping pancake face and the look of a horrifically botched old-school upper-facelift..... P.S.... that yellow shadow is da bomb.. I want..
@@eyeclipper Hah, it's such a rare face shape, of course I'll share (and be super extra in my description) in the hopes that it might be helpful :) So I've struggled a lot over the years and have landed on: minimal overall foundation to at least make sure that the parts I don't conceal don't stand out as having a different texture. Then the best thing I can do around my eyes is to really not over-conceal the eyelids and area below my brows. I have to make sure the shadows are still visible, because if I don't, it flattens my face and makes it longer and incredibly weird.. I'll typically do a light coverage foundation there (dabbed first on my hand with a sponge) and then, if anything, a thin liner towards the outer corners straight out toward the temple, not upward. I realize that's hard to explain in words, but I find that with my face shape, lines moving horizontally are the most flattering. The upward cat eye look tends to look absolutely insane hah.. Then maybe a bit of a highlight shade on the inner-center lid (not in that part at the very inner corner of the eye.... that looks horrendous hah) and I'm all set! Oh and any added lashes look great towards the outer corner. Whole sets don't usually look good, so I do the individual sets. Hope that helps! :)
@@brooke9297 Yes, thank you so much! I actually dont do outer lashes only (as if i did lashes at all most of the time but lets ignore that hahah) bc i feel like it weighs the last past only, even if i liked the look on other people 😭. I am curious, what do you think of the 'douyin' style makeup, where they make the liner kinda enhance the downwardness of the eyes? I tried it recently and it made had the opposite effect of the foxy eye, and it put more focus on the outer parts of my face (mostly cheekbones) and in a way makes it look less long?? + the make up isnt really on the eyelids so it doesnt create weird lines. But at the same time you have to really embrace the eye shape 😬
As someone who's been told by a few different people that I have "droopy eyes" (I like to call it resting sad face lol), I really appreciated all the downturned eye love! I'm feeling inspired to try out some new techniques to lean into the sleepiness and just embrace it. On a side note the color combo on your eyeshadow was killer.
It took me years to figure out why heavy liner or certain eye looks never worked for me….I tell you Years… I have hooded eyes. When I realized that it was a serious game changer!
I have large round eyes, but a very small distance between my eye and brow-bone which is not that defined, so they look a bit hooded from front even though they actually arent, and I have had them called sleepy eyes all my life. So I feel really validated and flattered that anyone finds eyes like mine attractive. Everyone always says they want bigger eyes until even daily eyeshadow looks too dramatic! But I like it, I just wish there were more techniques out there for my eyeshape that weren't always corrective in nature. Trying trends is fun, because the main person I learned from how to make makeup that I like, was in the end, myself. I love your eye look here, it's stunning ❤️
I love that you empower us to choose the uncharted path… I have a lot of real estate in my eyelid but my eyes aren’t as round as yours and I’ve tried your technique above where you put shadow above the crease of my eye and it really does work I love thank you 😊
I have hooded eyes and in one of your videos your talking about putting the makeup in the outer crease in a circle pattern. Really opens up the eye. So thank you for explaining it and it works well.
You are an artist and I have an idea, but I'm not so sure if this is something workable. Maybe you could show us, what you just explain with the other shapes, on a drawing on your favored medium. Like these makeup work books. I myself have hooded lids and not much space to my brows. Like your examples of JLaw and KStew. I tend to blend out my shimmer a little over the crease, because it prevents transfer and kinda gives the illusion of more space. I mostly use small brushes or else I have the deepening shade all up in my brows. I too like elongating my looks outward. I like trying different looks, that at the end look good on fotos but not so much in real live, or you can't really see them with open eyes. Thanks for the video and inspiration 😁
Ah I didn't even know i needed this validation as a down-turned eye gal. Have often been frustrated by certain eye liner looks that seem extra hard to do on my eye shape and I never really thought about why. And I LOVE a heavy lower lash line and never understood why it's a no-no for a lot of people. This explains a lot haha.
Hahaha you have my attention throughout this video, but when you called out for Putin I lost it 🤣 🤣 🤣 omg Awww thanks so much Alex! This WAS refreshing watching you just play and talk! I’ll definitely be bolder with my lower lash line! You hit the nail on the head when you said not to be scared to drag it downwards, I’m half Korean so I’ve always grew up with this idea of makeup being lifted and light and sweet and going dark is dark waters! But I love boldness and color! The majority of my hang up about putting on makeup on myself is I don’t really know who I look like and I think I’ve done a lot of that “look at others and copy” that I’m not familiar with my own features as much but I think life is bringing us back to ourselves now and it’s an awesome and best time to experiment with that stuff! That’s again for a cool post :) take care Alex!
In all my years of being a makeup and skincare junkie, you're the only 1 I've heard mention 2 different eye shapes. I have a hooded lid & a lid with space. It can be terribly frustrating so I wish an artist would do a series of looks on uneven eyes 💬
When you started talking about “droopy” eyes I almost started crying because I felt seen. My mom has very deep hoods and her outside corners are downturned and she passed the same eye shape to me. In fact, our hoods embrace the droop and fold completely past the outer corner. It took me finding Wayne Goss’s channel before I ever had any clue how to make my eyeshadow look “good” on me. It took me even longer to get over my insecurities about my sunken, blue lower lids and realize I could use them to my advantage too. Now I get compliments all the time and do my mom’s eyes for her on special occasions so she too can see the magic and power in what others consider an “unfortunate” eye shape. And I’m grateful for you helping spread the message of love and beauty and acceptance for all shapes and types.
I love the way you do tutorials, it is so real and chill. As someone who has watched TONS of beauty gurus and tutorial and kinda got tired of them saying the same thing, you have made me like tutorials and I learn a lil something from every vid.
Great video and advice. I, in middle age, was struggling to get all the looks of the day I was seeing RU-vidrs create that just were not working for my hooded lids. THEN I reconnected with a young and old Katherine Hepburn, who was absolutely stunning AND had hooded eyes. Gorgeous hooded eyes. Here eyes were accentuated with lashes and maybe some liner. On occasion she had shadow but it wasn't to change her eyes or to hide the hoodedness of them. What she did do was play with complexion, brows, and lips to look fresher or more dramatic. Sure, I feel like I miss out on wearing a gorgeous cut crease or halo eye. Yea, I do. And then I remember that eyes are not the only feature of the face that can stand out or with which we can be creative.
I hope you don’t take this the wrong way but I always play your videos at night to help me sleep, not only for entertainment but your voice is so soothing ❤️❤️
For the longest time I've struggled with this. I've always tried to mimic a tutorial on my eye shape because it looked beautiful on the one creating it. Honestly, I get to learn so much from your videos. It's so therapeutic and educational at the same time💗
this is something ive been thinking about a lot, especially since the trends have moved so decidedly towards this super lifted aesthetic. i also have a sort of "droopy" downturned eye, and my eyes are very wide and round, so no matter what i do the whole fox eye trend is never going to look normal on me. recently I've embraced a very subtle, straight across eyeliner and rounded, diffused eyeshadow shapes that accentuate the roundness and downturn of my eyes and i LOVE it. it goes against everything the trends tell you to do but it just works so well for me
It's something us older ladies have to learn. Do the best with what you have, but if like me you are in your 60's accept some looks just don't suit us anymore. However we can still find a pretty look
Yes. I feel like trends have kept us away from keeping in mind of our own anatomy if you will. I’ve been experimenting with eye looks and accentuating my own eye shape. It’s timeless when it matches your structure
@@libbyt2581 right and then when you do and it doesn’t look as good as everyone else you think it’s something wrong w you. When I’m reality it just doesn’t work for you
Would love a video where you do makeup on other people so we can see advice in real action. Recently, you’ve said you were feeling like you were in a bit of a video rut, maybe this would be something new for you and subscribers. We all learn together!
Thank you! I really needed to hear this. I have hooded, uneven eyes and really considered surgery, but at the same time i hate plastic surgery as i think being natural is the most beautiful in the end. I'm motivated to figure out the best eye makeup for my eyes. Love your content. It's so interesting and informative.
It's very french beauty philosophy to enhance what makes you you and it's soo beautiful imo. it makes everyone else want to embrace their own features.
Exactly! Doesn’t matter that it’s trending if it doesn’t suit you. Makeup can be fun and creative, editorial even!, but I think the #1 is to have fun, and feel your best by accentuating your OWN best features. I really love your tutorials. Especially the in depth ones are some of the best of that long format. Thanks Alex! ❤
Would love a part two to this video where you do a look on your eyes and then an adjusted version of that look on someone with different “eye real estate”. Would be amazing to learn while watching you.
I generally think that people should wear whatever makeup they want even if its not "flattering" on them; however, I do get that feeling sometimes after doing my makeup that I dont feel beautiful. Because even though the makeup look is creative and beautiful, but it doesnt bring out my fave features and sometimes accentuates some "flaws", e.g. I have undereye bags/indent, so highlighter placement can make it even more noticeble. Thanks for the video 😊
Please don't think this is weird or cringe, but every time I watch your videos I cannot stop looking at your lips. They're so gorgeous and everything you do accentuates them so perfectly. I appreciate your tutorials so much because you've helped improve my makeup game immensely! My lips aren't as gorgeous, but you damn sure taught me how to work with what I've got and appreciate my own features. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 Thank you so much!
This video was a fucking lifesaver! I have the traditional Finnic face structure: a wide face with deep-set hooded eyes, a heavy brow with puffy lids and downturned outer corners - a nightmare for applying eye makeup. For YEARS I've tried all kinds of hooded eye trickery, with varying degrees of success. I could never quite figure out what it was that made me succeed/fail, and I thought I'm just not the girl for interesting eyeshadow colors. But now that you mentioned K-Stew and I looked her pictures more closely, I now realize I have all this real estate on the side of my face I never understood to utilize! Your content is always super helpful, with researched and detailed explanations on how different makeup application works for your face.
Not me trying for years to do my eye makeup just like JH and felt bad about myself that it never looked good… until I started doing my eyes following my own shape. Game changer!
This hit on so many fantastic points. I have hooded and deep-set eyes where my crease curves all the way down to the outer corners of my eyes. There are hacks to get lifted liner on my eyes from a front view, but with my eye socket structure, it looks SILLY from any other angle! I found a RU-vid makeup artist with similar eye structure who focuses on flattering looks for hooded eyes, even if they aren’t currently trending. She inspired me to ignore the “lift” trend and bring my liner downward on the outer edges more even though other gurus say “it drags your eyes down and makes them look saggy. It’s WRONG.” It makes mine look LOVELY, thanks! What a great message. Do what works for you. Trends help us learn new techniques and consider different looks, but we should just borrow what we like and leave the rest behind without fear of not being “trendy” enough. This is why I despise videos that say “Makeup mistakes!” or “Right vs. wrong.” They pressure us to all do the same thing when we should be free to do whatever we please!
So many good points! I think this can also apply to lips. I have small downturned lips and I have realised I have to be very strategic with how and where I overdraw them. I can't do all the wild trendy lip looks so I tend to play up my eyes more or just using a lot if gloss to make my lips a bit bigger 😂
out of all the beauty-tubers out there (that aren't makeup artists), you're the first person i have ever heard someone say this and it gives me so much confidence.
I have a short attention span, even for things I'm truly interested in. However every time I stumble upon one of your videos I'm GLUED! Thanks for great content, I'm officially subscribed
I tried it and it worked. I had been putting shadow too high above my crease. This time I stayed lower and also extended shadow to the outer sides of eyes. Looks good. (Old, hooded, almond-shaped eyes.)
I’ve always disliked my ‘bedroom eyes’ as I look stoned or bored half the time. I’ve always wanted uplifted upturned eyes so I can wear heavy corner eye looks. It was nice to hear your take on it. Thank you.
Can you give us a "cool girl" spring makeup look?? Also how to hide tired eyes and look more awake. Also how to look dewy, hydrated, and effortlessly flawless!! I have many wants, sorry!! Love you!!
It has been a few days since I've watched this video and ever since I've been looking at my eyes in a whole different light, I didnt even realize before this that there are celebs with downturned eyes. Thank you so much for your kind comments you made me love myself a bit more ❤❤❤
Thanks for this video! I’m a licensed esthetician in PA and I am working on getting better at makeup so I can potentially become a makeup artist! I learned some things in school but this video was very helpful!
Ok I needed this reminder so much. There are some fashion trends that I am trying so hard to like and make work for me, but they are just soooo unflattering for my body type!
I have small hooded eyes with very little space between my lash line and brow bone. I've been doing my makeup for years and I'm still trying to figure out what my best eye look is 😅The struggle is real! The best advice I can give to people with my eye shape it to not focus on trying to create a traditional crease for yourself! Play around with unconventional shadow placements. Toss out the "how to make your eyes less hooded" advice. My everyday look these days is a wash of shimmer on my lid and crease area with a deeper matte on the outer corner. It give the eyes enough lift and definition without having to worry about contouring a crease. Here are some videos that I find helpful: Linda Hallberg's winged eye liner for hooded lids Annette's makeup corner big wing for hooded eyes Anything by Smitha Deepak If anybody has any other great hooded eyes videos, I'd love to hear them!
Everything you said in this video is just point on, so thank you for that. I struggle so intensely with my eyes and how they are shaped and trying to keep up with how it's "supposed " to look
Sydney Sweeney/ Emma chamberlain tutorial please! I love the message in this video, I always have trouble with drawing a sharp line for my inner corner. My eyes are closer set and it just brings them closer.
WOW! That explains so much why I my eyeshadow NEVER never looks good. I don't have a lot of "real estate" as you said 😃! I have deep set eyes. So I'm doing my eye shadow all wrong! Great information!!! Thank you!
Love you.. I needed this. I have downturned eye shape and I feel ashamed of droopy features. . especially with the sharp tight trends that I find beautiful. I also love my eyes too though.
I love your approach to makeup as unique style for each person … you are straightforward and very reassuring for those of us who do have different features … refreshing !!!
Ugh I just remembered this makeup artist who wanted to “correct” my eyes because they’re not lifted. My eye corners go slightly downward and my eyes are slightly hooded. But I was never self conscious about my eyes, on the contrary. I have big green eyes and I’ve gotten compliments about them my whole life. I would never touch them to become lifted. They just work perfectly for my face. It was just something very funny to me that this woman wanted so badly to “correct” my eye shape. I never said anything to her about it but I would never go to her again. She also did my makeup in a totally unflattering way for my face. I don’t understand why people wanna be all the same. When there are so many stunning women and men whose features don’t fall into the beauty standard rn
I definitely agree w what you're saying. I kinda have chubby cheeks and I feel like i've been told to contour and do this that and the other to make my face look slimmer. But what if I wana enhance my cheeks? it's what makes me unique and if we all try to look like everyone else it's gona be sooo boring. Also when I get older I know I'll miss them loll
i don't have much lid space, my brows are really low, so i put a lot of shadow underneath my eyes and wing it to the side a lot, because i have loads of cheek space and a lot of space where my eye ends to the edge of my face, so it works really well for me, thank you for validating me i thought i was just doing something wrong, that that was the only thing that suited me!!!
Alex! I used to watch make up tutorials religiously but fell off for about 5 years. I recently found your channel and it has re-ignited my love for doing fun and creative make up looks!!
Yesss! Understanding your unique bone structure, real estate, what’s reasonable, and what you’re working to achieve are instrumental in understanding what techniques will flatter you most. There are techniques that’ll enhance every eye shape, so play! As for the hoodies who are looking to do cut creases, bring that contour a few millimeters above your natural socket (where your eyeball meets your brow bone, not where your hood creases). This’ll help make the look more believable as well as guide your other eye looks! Every eye shape is beautiful and able to be enhanced through different techniques. While not all work for everyone, there are plenty that will!
👀 Me watching you use that giant blender to apply shadow. Brush companies finally making small blender brushes was a game changer for me. I also love using sponge tip applicators because they can get right into my teeny tiny corner and are perfect for shimmers. Knowing and acknowledging your eyeshape as well as using the right tools for your eyes is everything. Large blenders don’t work on small eyes but everyone wants to use the same tools they see YTers using.
I always love and appreciate that you not only point out that not every look/trend/application method is suited to every person, but that it also isn't necessary to work against your natural features. Sure, you can manipulate how you look if that's your goal, but your features are not a problem to be "fixed"
