Roy, when a reader and a fan goes to this level of effort, it makes what we do all worthwhile! Thank you! (from your friends at Meteor House)

Great overview of PJFarmer's Wold Newton concept and his Tarzan and Doc biographies! I first encountered this as the Doubleday first edition copy in our local library. I bought various paperback copies over the years. Like TARZAN ALIVE!, a great, fun book.

Hi Roy. I have been a Doc Fan since 1972. Just recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Win Scott Eckert in person at Pulpfest in Pennsylvania. I can attest to the fact that he is a great guy! I also picked up my copy of the book you just unboxed and found it to be deluxe, indeed. I have several paperback copies and have read it a few times and certain chapters many times. This will be a prize in my reading collection. I wish you well!

Thanks, nice to 'meet' you on here! Win certainly comes across as a top human.

I really need to read some Doc Savage. I had never even heard of him until I was an adult. I'm glad your upbringing was more Savage

Plus there was a movie that year as well! I had a poster of the film on my wall which my granny thought was a Elton John 🤔🤔🤔

That new edition looks great! I visited the Meteor Press web-site but couldn't quite pull the trigger. But I am thinking about the Greatheart Silver volume. I remember liking those stories from Byron Priess' Weird Heroes series. Thanks for showing us this newish edition. I still have, and am amazed by, the Doc Savage and Tarzan books, and also "The Other Log of Phineas Fogg", which I lately purchased to reread on Kindle (where I can make the print bigger.) I'm also looking forward to reading those Bunduki Jungle Adventures by J.T. Edson!

A marvellous and informative video! I remember you (and maybe MKV) talking about this book before. I may have to pick up a (non fancy) copy

It's a fun read and a brilliantly mad concept

You need to find a copy of 'Tarzan Alive' too, Olly. Meteor House hasn't done a new edition of that one, because the copyrights lie elsewhere, but you can get a Kindle copy from Gollancz-SF Gateway.

That's cool. I've got a copy from 70s too. Got mine at a second hand book store. Good stuff.

It's a fun read - I really must get over to Wold Newton IRL

Yet another example of where our tastes align. I've often stated that 'Tarzan Alive' is the most expensive book I've ever bought, as it introduced me to the Wold Newton Family in 1974, and led me to buy so many other books, as did the volume in question, of course. I would haunt my local second-hand bookshop searching for any books about any characters who were included in that family tree. I tend to review all new Meteor House publications, but I can't remember if I ever got to that one, but I got the original signed, limited hardcover when it came out a few years back, and it has everything that's in this collector's edition, which was too rich for my blood, especially with internatiol shipping on top. Did you get 'The Monster on Hold', which Win Scott Eckert posthumously collaborated on with Philip José Farmer? I did a big review of that, and many of the related books on John Linwood Grant's greydogtales blog. I'd post a link, but RU-vid would immediately delete my post if I did that.

I had a similar journey finding books about the various WN characters. It was an exciting catalyst, seeing characters I knew and liked (eg Solomon Kane) linked with others I knew from TV (Raffles) and some I had assumed to he boring relics (Bulldog Drummond) - as well as intriguing new-to-me folks (Captain Kettle). It was a massive geeky thrill to be able to identify WN hints in Master of Kung Fu comics! As if the WN universe was coming alive around me. I really enjoyed Monster on Hold - just tracked down your excellent review 👍

@@royreadsanything The new one, combining Jules Verne's 'Around the World in Eighty Days', with Philip José Farmer's 'The Other Log of Phileas Fogg' looks to be spectacular too. I should have the advance review pdf in a few days.

You do such a fun and lively job with Farmer's brilliant book. Here's what amazes me about the book. In spite of its somewhat fanciful premise there is more solid scholarship and inspired cultural and literary history than in your average shelf of lit crit or biography. His take on apocalyticism in literature is breathtaking and his catalogue style summary of the apocalyptic themes of individual stories when read aloud feels like you are reading any classic of ancient apocalyptic verse. Most fun though is his treatment of Patricia Savage. He had a crush on her. I had a crush on her. Farmer brings her brilliantly and beautifully alive. Farmer's book made me determined to tell a version of the Dent / Savage story and I'm still working hard on it. That was fun Roy. Thank you.
