Epic Navigator
Welcome again to my channel dear sailors, and today we are braking down the single handed maneuver of a monohull sailing boat, undocking and docking in Alimos Marina Greece.
A lot of people around the world are asking me to perform this maneuver and you are about to see that the maneuver is not the most important but the preparation is.
Please feel free to ask any question you like to the comment section so we can give you a responsible answer, or even better to make a new video as an answer to your question.

Nice clear instructions. But dont get fooled that it works often like that, there are 100+ different situations (wind, current, boat shape and props,thrusters, marina situation, wind shades etc). After sailing for 60 yrs including single around the world, im still learning.

Great video! I would love to see you do the same in a crosswind, a headwind and/or with a long keel boat that doesn't steer so nicely in reverse.
@Crazy_Worlds
@Crazy_Worlds 4 дня назад
With a long keel boat you have to almost entirely rely on your bow thruster to steer, or the marina RIB if you don’t have a bow thruster, and as the man said in another video: don’t be afraid to call the marina for a dock hand and even a RIB to help if needed. Far better show a little humility than taking out your neighbour’s stanchions and life lines etc.

Excellent video with a clearly communicated process. A couple of things I would do differently. 1. When leaving I would not leave such a long trailing line, but adjust it prior to leaving to the right length. It is absolutely fine to drag a line when going ahead. However, if for whatever reason you needed to go astern before recovering the line then you risk it fouling the prop. 2. When you are preparing to return. I would sit stern to the wind as this minimises drift and also means you don’t have to worry about the bow being blown off. If you drift too far then simply engaging reverse will return you to your original position. Indeed it can also be possible to stay in gear against the wind and maintain station. 3. Rather than using a bowline I use a bite with the return on a Genoa winch. This way I have a longer line if required and a quick and simple way to reduce length. When backing against the lazy lines I can then easily transfer the return to the cleat. Also means you don’t have to swap out the bowline.

Just to be an armchair sailor, the first thing that they explain to us during any sailing/yacht training, including RYA, is that you don't drop lines in the water close to the prop. That is a disaster waiting to happen. So seeing that line dragging after the boat just made me anxious as hell. Other than that, it is a pretty nice explanation and video.

@hagaiabeliovich4276
@hagaiabeliovich4276 20 дней назад
Nice job. What is the advantage of using the short bowline line to do the initial docking? Wouldn't it make more sense to prepare a slip line that you can throw over the bollard? This will give you a bigger target so that you can throw the line at the bollard from a metre to a meter and a half away. Are you concerned about a longer line fouling the prop?
@epicnavigator
@epicnavigator 20 дней назад
Both works fine, you do whatever makes you feel more comfortable depending of the conditions. For that specific case I wanted the length to be predefined and not very long so I will just engage forward and hold the boat to the wind. To shoot a lasso usually requires longer line so you may have to pull the slack in a bit before you forward and that is pretty much multitasking

Another couple of questions -- (1) Clarification: depending on wind direction, do you want to go pass your slot bow first and then begin the reverse with aft to wind on final approach? (2) Do you prep your leeward line too so it is ready to go once windward is secure?

FEEDBACK: The instruction is excellent, but I struggle to understand his English. Each time he mentions 'wingo line', I translate it to 'windward line', but it's distracting. This is where closed captions are useful: turning on RU-vid captions is beneficial, but the auto-translate feature is inadequate, as it repeats 'wingo line' and 'Ming line' (which is unclear). RU-vid should expedite the process for viewers to submit corrections, ensuring auto-translate functions correctly. FEEDBACK 2: Video editors aren't actually sailors, so they're cutting out what seems extraneous to them.. but not to me! eg: Skipper had the so-called lazy line in his hands as he moved to the bow but the next shot shows him cleating the starboard bow line. I've never been in the Med, I've never handled a lazy line. To see the transition from it to the main line would have been useful so I can imagine doing it myself when I'm there. Training Videos like this are rated 'great' by people who ALREADY know the procedures.
@epicnavigator
@epicnavigator 3 дня назад
Thank you for the feedback, I will go in and correct the auto subtitles soon. There is a series of instructional videos coming soon and it will be available with subscription. Usually all these information are given to the competent crew course and it's extremely costly to make it equally educational and detailed with a video. Can I ask what is your language?

You didn’t mention anything about current. Before determining last line to release, you can’t just look at wind. Current has a much greater effect than wind. Also you dropped lines in the water, that is a big no no, they can foul the prop.
