I can’t explain how much I love you for explaining the freeze response. It’s SO important and so often overlooked
@robrobusa
@robrobusa 2 года назад
I always freeze in situations. It's not just fight or flight. The freeze is really underexplained. Thank you for pointing that out!
@ianrose6218
@ianrose6218 2 года назад
Every single time a person who's "studied the human brain" says that the freeze response isn't real, I want to slap them across the face. Not only is there an "ancient evolutionary purpose" for freezing, since that's the "biological" angle they use to justify fight and flight, but freezing is also the response I have most when something sends me into a panic. It's like they're ignoring a common human experience just because it wasn't mentioned in textbooks published at least 20 years ago. Science moves on. Freezing is real, and more people need to acknowledge that.

"Infection is what screams to the front of my mind" I think a lot of people missed something, especially if they aren't thinking about history. This man is old enough to have been a child during the Korean War, and those sirens are typical with air raids.... It could be infection, but it could be reliving trauma of a very scary situation for anyone, let alone a child.

As someone who has a pretty good understanding of crane machines, the crane machine scene makes me sad. People aren't lying when they say crane machines are rigged, but the amount to which they can be rigged is staggering, and it's in ways that can make people think they were just unlucky and continue to spend money playing. Even if I've never encountered a machine before, I can usually tell in a single play (or no plays at all) whether it's worth ever touching again, but that's only because I've spent the time reading game cabinet manuals and trialling that on real machines. Most machines have a built in win counter, where you cannot win again for a certain number of plays, that's a given. Past that, plenty have essentially a coin toss on whether the claw will grip or not, providing a sensor at the base of the claw isn't triggered by coming down hard on an item. If the sensor is tripped, it's way less likely to grip (which is why if I think a machine has a shot, I'll try to lie the claw down beside the item and slip one claw underneath, then I have usually roughly even odds of it lifting if I get it right - I got a massive R2D2 plushie that was claw machine exclusive with a really touchy claw doing that). Some machines I just have to look at and know it'll almost never pay out, because the claw has been altered to basically never grip. Even past that, those really, really packed machines? Leave them alone. Some places instruct workers to pack machines in a way where the toys' arms or tags are tucked under others, and will cause the claw to fail to lift almost every time. If there's an item in a machine that you really want, look up online whether it's available out of a machine before you try to win it, unless you don't mind spending a few bucks for nothing. There are crane machine exclusive items, but most of the time, you can just buy the item online for less than you would spend trying to get it. Then, have a spending limit, where if you don't get it, you're going to walk away.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on what Sang-Woo did in the last few episodes and what his mindset is, is he really evil or was it all caused by the fear and stress of the games?

@user-xr7bd4zb6k
@user-xr7bd4zb6k 2 года назад
as to what I have learnt no person is inherently good or evil, it's the surroundings you're grown in that you are conditioned to be. Also it depends on the situation, Sang Woo probably did it bc he knew he would rather save himself than the person he just met a few days ago, most people would choose that too
@Englishjaffa

That mf was all about the grind set
@nonacrina
@nonacrina 2 года назад
I think the point of the show is that no one who participates in the games is evil; not Sang-woo, not Deok-su, no one. They’re all victims of the same system hellbent on keeping them poor, portrayed by the Frontman, VIPs, etc. And also, think about it, was he really evil? He did morally questionable things, sure, but I don’t think you can apply the same morals to this life-or-death game as you can to the real world. When it’s really “me or the other guy”, and death is on the line, I think most people would choose themselves
@oosakasan
@oosakasan 2 года назад
@@nonacrina I think Sang woo is "evil", or at least is meant to be understood as such (I'm not really into notions of "good" vs "evil" myself). Consider how the people ended up in the games to begin with. ISTM the characters who are coded as "good" (like Ali, or Sae-byeok) are shown to be as downtrodden as it gets, hurting other people yes but hurting people who have power over them or out of survival, and otherwise being motivated by family concerns. Deok-su is coded as "evil", and it's clear his money problems are mostly of his own devising and he hurts people he has power over (his subordinates). Gi-hun is kind of in between: like Deok-su he hurts people he has power over (his daughter and mother) and his money problems are largely of his own devising, but like Ali and Sae-byeok he does care about his family members and they're his main motivators, and his money problems aren't *completely* his fault, he also is legitimately downtrodden. Sang-woo in this model is a bit hard to figure out; in some ways he seems to be "good": we don't see him hurting anybody "outside", and he has this big scene with Ali saying he's doing this for his family, who'd be killed otherwise. But we also know he lost all this money via embezzlement, and his dramatic scene with Ali is undercut by the revelation he did other things to play the poor sap in order to win, and we had no indications outside of that scene that his family was in any danger. So all evidence is that he's in it for himself; that even though Gi-hun and everyone in his community sees him as an avatar for the community, one who "made it out", he made it out for himself, embezzled that money for himself, entered the game to get the money back for himself. That doesn't mean he doesn't have warm feelings for Gi-hun or care about him, or that he didn't care about Ali, but it does mean that those feeling aren't going to carry the day if his own self-interest is on the other side of the balance. As it was with Ali, who he screwed over - with maybe some guilt but no apparent hesitation. And of course Sae-byeok, whom he reveals he killed only to make sure she and Gi-hun didn't outvote him to stop the game (and therefore lose the money). And as it wasn't at the end with Gi-hun, where he died in an apparent self-sacrifice for Gi-hun to get the money, but it's pretty clear it was mostly a suicide... like, it was either Gi-hun gets the money or he survives with no money, and option 2 did not appeal, so it wasn't so much that he cared more about Gi-hun than himself, but that he no longer had any option where he "won" anyway so might as well help Gi-hun.

Thank you so much for commenting at the end on how the game makers were coercive in their selection of players. So many others have been of the same mindset as Il-Nam, saying that they had a choice. I would also argue that it’s paired with uninformed consent as players had no warning of the games that were being played, the contract was written in such a way that it hid it violent nature, and lastly the game keepers spoke vaguely enough that players had the impression that multiple people could win.

I think it'd be interesting to react to Supernatural Season 5 episode 11 (Sam, interrupted). Supernatural is a show where two brothers hunt monsters that most people have absolutely no idea exist so when they start telling the truth to people they'll definitely sound insane. This episode they purposefully get into a mental hospital by simply telling the truth (which makes them sound crazy) because a bunch of patients have died and they believe that a monster is killing them and the staff don't believe the witnesses. Forgetting the fact that monsters aren't real etc, I'm curious to know just how unrealistic the hospital is. It's mostly a funny episode and obviously can't be taken too seriously but I think it'd be funny to hear your thoughts on it.

Thank you so much for mentioning that coercion invalidates "informed consent" (emphasis on INFORMED). For those who are interested, informed consent is, amogst other things, a principle of research ethics stating that participants need to be given all relevant information about what exactely it means for them to take part in the research BEFORE they are able to give consent. This includes understanding in detail what they are consenting to and being given time to reflect upon it without any coercive influcence. This idea of informed consent vs. uninformed consent (i. e. INVALID consent) can be adapted to most contexts and none of the people in this series were actually able to give informed consent to participate in the games because they didn't know what exactely the were consenting to and were also most definitley influenced unduely. It sort of rubbed me the wrong way that series, at least in my perception, didn't explore that concept more.

Regarding the alleged consent of the players and how they all "signed willingly", let's not forget they weren't informed what "eliminated" was going to mean in practice. One could argue it was their job to ask but since it was all about the game it was natural everybody interpreted it in the most literal sense. So in addition to coercion, they were purposefully misled as well.
@DoctorElliottCarthy

@bialynia
@bialynia 2 года назад
@@DoctorElliottCarthy Yeah, there was a lot of ambiguity the whole time. Even when the players came back the second time. Most prominently they were never told explicitly how many people can finish the game. We saw the policeman going through the files and since the early 1990s, there was always only one survivor. But the players clearly believed that any number can make it. Then there was the fact that the "player can be eliminated" rule didn't just apply to games, it simply meant that murder was OK. The list is pretty long.

Spoke to an anesthesiologist here in the US. True on the anesthetic gas inhalation (nitrous is still used, but requires a high enough concentration to make them sleep this deep and washes out so fast that it’s likely not the gas. Desflurane works in onset and offset even faster than nitrous but is very pungent and requires special equipment due to its volatility, Sevo, and Halothane can produce a pleasant induction like the show, but unless it’s been used for several hours, it’s unlikely to stay on board long enough to undress. Isoflurane is also smelly on induction.) the other thing is the mask used wouldn’t filter the gases mentioned. It would also be difficult to keep the concentration of gas consistent given the car that was used. In summation, it may have been a mixture of sevoflurane on induction with isoflurane as maintenance for several hours, but like most of cinema, no one consulted the docs to make a believable plot. Thanks Doc for the annoying questions. There’s your answer.

I have some personal addictions but gambling is one of the few things I am pretty solid on. When I gamble there is a part of me that is convinced I am going to win. I allow myself to enjoy the fantasy. I have been told to "only gamble with money I am prepared to lose" but the semantic mindset I take is "only gamble with money I am prepared to spend". I maintain a clear distinction in my mind between the money I spend on gambling, and the money I might get back. Once I have bought those lottery tickets, or placed a bet on the horses, that money is gone. Spent. Any money I get back (assuming I don't win big money) is bonus money that I can either take or continue to play with without spending more, or use to treat myself. The psychological distinction allows me to regulate my spending because I am putting cost first.

I thought you would've mentioned that the lack of contact or clear instructions from the figures of authority (the masked guys) during the actual games, ends up putting the contestants in a fear state that they simmer in or act. Hence the fight/flight/freeze. They're trying to condition these players to be willing to do anything to progress, to do anything to get out. I find it really poignant that you mentioned the illusion of free choice, and that by picking up the most disadvantaged people, they're just capitalizing on that lack of choice (which no doubt affected them psychologically before and it's only heightened in the games).

Quick question (or not that quick): how do you distinguish between addiction and love, and where in this scale do video games stand? (They are great brain training tools!) Thanks.
@AnxietyRat
@AnxietyRat 2 года назад
Video games can be addicting. They use the same criteria for video game addiction. It's the same as any other addiction. If it start affecting your day to day life and you are neglecting hygiene or family/significant others and it is uncontrollable and extremely hard to stop playing...it might be an issue. Dr.K ( The Healthy Gamer)on RU-vid talks about it a LOT. He is great.

What's the psychological disorder called where you willingly watch dubbed TV shows instead of subtitles? Is it a neurological issue that enables you to ignore the disconnect between lip movement and the sound's coming out? Truly a fascinating subject!

You should react to Community! There’s nothing about mental health but seasons 2 and 3 are probably some of the greatest most creative and funny seasons of television EVER.
@WillowJordan1979
@WillowJordan1979 2 года назад
There's plenty about mental health too. Jeff's narcissism, Abed is on the spectrum, even things like Shirley's baking obsession. Annie's Adderall addiction and overachieving nature, etc. It would make for a really interesting analysis.

Also the removed episode that deals with potential su*cide, but that one would probably get him in trouble.

Is there anything to be said about Il-nam’s reasoning for joining the games (i.e., that life isn’t fun anymore so he has to seek this dangerous thrill to feel enjoyment)? I think he also mentions that his rich clients also report that they don’t find life enjoyable anymore so they have to keep upping the ante. Is that some kind of depression symptom?
@AnxietyRat
@AnxietyRat 2 года назад
I think it's more gambling addiction like they say at the end...than depression. It isn't a ahedonia. It's the thrill not being as intense anymore so they have to make it ...more. it's more addiction than depression. Source: I have depression.

It's the right way for an analysis/reaction video though. Not everyone is able to read the subtitles and enjoy it in that way, but I agree that the original with subtitles is better. The emotions are much more real.

Since you saw the big reveal scene to answer your question whether the old man, Il-nam, was right or not about the free will bit, it could be argued that he is right more and more so as the game goes on. When the contestants initially sign up, they don't know about how the game could cost them their lives. (Even though the whole thing is sketchy to begin with. A mysterious van drives up to you and the driver knocks you out? Yeah....I don't want to play that.) But after the first game of red light/green light, everyone knows what sort of game they are in. And in the contract they all signed to play the game, they agreed that if all of them holds a vote to end the game, they could do so and leave. And at first they did. All 201 of them. But soon after 187 agree to come back and play knowing full well that they have a slim chance to win. Now here's the thing, at any given time, they could always hold another vote to end the game. Any single time. But they never do, no matter how dire the situation becomes that is until the final game between two players. The fact that the players keep on playing knowing full well that the game is going to end with all but one dead and they don't hold another vote to quit says their own deaths is on them. They chose to keep playing even though the odds were extremely against their favor and the result from losing a game was death. Again, that's free will. It would be like playing Russian roulette but instead of starting with one bullet and keeping to one bullet, you add a bullet to the chamber as the gun is passed around and the barrel is rolled. Only at any given time you could all choose to walk away but you don't. No one is forcing you to play. You could walk away back to your sad lives but you would still be living. And with each turn your chance of surviving goes down. Now, if you shoot yourself in the head, whose fault is it? The game master who put the gun in your hand or you who agreed to keep playing even though you know you have a big exit out at any given time?
