What people don’t understand is that doctors who prescribe drugs to drug addicts or drug dealers. Neither in this scenario is any better than the other. But one is acknowledged as a problem and the other really isn’t. Even the way you worded it “ bribe your doctor.” He didn’t bribe him. What’s not so acknowledge is the doctors and medical professionals that are essentially drug dealers and getting away with it. But making Perry seem like a unknowingly victim is also preposterous. He could have used his $$ for treatment. But his ego and desire to get high mattered more.

When you go to a doctor to get help, you trust the doctor. A lot of people go and get ketamine therapy for things like severe depression or trauma. It would be a different story if he bought it on the street then it would be solely Matthew Perry's fault. When you're under the medical care of a doctor then it is on the doctor, it is the doctor's fault. Most people do not question a doctor's advice or what they prescrib, they just do what they're told because they want to get better and they trust the doctors.

That's my dilemma. We always need "somebody" to blame.

As a recovering addict myself I see a lot of blame shifting and blame assignment in NA meetings all the time. Are there unscrupulous doctors out there? Yes. However no one but Perry himself took out $50k from the bank and spent it on drugs! There has to be some personal accountability or no one gets better! It's unfortunate that Perry succumbed to his addiction but it happens hundreds of times a day around the world and few get this type of attention. The Dr. needs to be dealt with but casting Perry as a poor victim helps no one.

But drug dealers, as unscrupulous as they are, don't physically stuff pills down someone's throat or inject black tar heroin into a strangers veins on a lark. No one forced me to experiment with prescription opioids or see multiple doctors a week...I did that. Without some personal accountability an addict will never get better. Dealers and shady doctors need to stopped and prosecuted; what makes these situations even more complex is the incidence of drug dealers/"plugs" being addicts themselves. The draconian "War on Drugs" campaign failed miserably; treatment, fellowship groups and genuine understanding of the viciousness of addiction are the only way long term recovery is possible.

There are people in prison from selling drugs , there is people in prison for someone else overdosing on the drugs they gave them . Doctors are held at a higher standard. That doctor knew they were doing wrong and they should go to prison.
