I react to the medical science in the science fiction of Iron Man 3 from a real doctor's perspective. There was so much to discover in this one, a few hospital scenes, a villain origin story involving genetics and Tony's mental health issues.
My mate Callum helped me with these videos, check out one of his videos here where he breaks down a scene from The Avengers: • One Marvelous Scene - ...
Also thank you to Dr James for giving me some thoughts on this video too!
You can watch my video on the medical scenes of Doctor Strange:
• Real Doctor reacts to ...
After the awesome response from the Dr Strange video and the release of Avengers Endgame - I wanted to pay homage to the franchise and visit a scene from every movie; but there were just so many cracking things to talk about that some of them I'm doing a whole video on. Hope you enjoy!

We’re back looking at the medical science in the MCU! Rewatching this I LOVED it 3000 after the arc (no pun intended) Iron Man had in Endgame. Hope you enjoy revisiting it with me. Timestamps to scenes: 00:31 - Dr Hansen on healing / regeneration 03:36 - Killian discusses our pain centre 08:04 - Killian & Potts on gene therapy 10:57 - Happy in hospital 13:16 - Tony’s panic attacks / mental health 20:28 - Tony in surgery

oh the doctors know this. but they can only diagnose based on what you tell them in the first place. if you only give up physical symptoms then you only get a physical fix. a lot of the time people think "i had bad doctors, and after years and years i finally found a good doctor" but what it probably most likly is, is that as time goes on you get more and more frustrated. you share more and more about what is actually causing the problem. stuff the first "bad" doctors didnt have access to. so after years of that, giving the next doctor a little bit more to work with, people get a "good" doctor. even the best mechanics cant fix your car if the only thing you let them fix is the fact you havn't changed your oil at all.

@@foxboy64 Sadly this isn't always the case. I've found that usually it is a "bad" doctor or one that just doesn't care and doesn't want to really treat patients or help them and so they just keep writing out pill scripts to avoid doing any actual work. I've gotten nothing but these kinds of doctors or doctors that have decided that I'm seeking attention and/or drugs and so they refuse to help me at all. It took me 5 years and an appointment with a telehealth doctor to get effective medication for my migraines of all things even though I gave lots of information as I lived with them for over ten years. I was accused of being a drug seeker or told that my migraines where untreatable and I would just have to live with them.

@@foxboy64 even so, the doctors duty and respondability is to ask you about everything. So is not the fault of the patient since he doesn't know anything about what is happening to him. A video I’m sure a lot of us were excited for after your first Iron Man video. I’m glad you went into as much depth with PTSD being shown in the film as it deserved! An entertaining video as always, Dr. Hope, and I love forward to your future videos too whether they are Marvel related or medical in general! A question for you: Do you think Tony still has his PTSD symptoms in all future Marvel films or do you think after this film uses the plot point his disorder suddenly disappears? Interested to know your thoughts.

Lord Lycan Definitely. You can almost see him having flashbacks to New York in Endgame, especially when you see the final battle. I understand why they downplayed it, but also would have been interesting to see them implement his trouble into the team-up films!

I don't specifically know PTSD but with my first hand experience with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and some acute Panic Attacks. The anxiety/emotions/thoughts maybe constantly there but not always on a outbreak level, most of the time it's at "I'm kinda worry" level and do not peak until something happened or you thinking about something happened/will happen.
@norge0209
@norge0209 4 года назад
I’ve had PTSD for 24 years, and it never goes away, even if the symptoms do. It still shows up on brain scans. However, as others have said, I would say Tony still suffers symptoms from the PTSD, as it was made worse by the event in New York, which bothers him until Endgame. Even though his “dream” from Wanda came from the Mind Stone, it seems to have affected him much more than any of the other Avengers, likely because he never really dealt with his original PTSD trigger.

I think in the first two movies the shrapnel was supposed to be inoperable, which is why Tony removing the shrapnel in this movie wasn't well received, because it seemed like a plothole. You kind of have to assume medicine progressed kind of a lot between films in the MCU universe.

Even when I saw it for the first time, I was thinking that Tony might have a case of PTSD. I mean, not only did his entire reality as he knew it become shattered in The Avengers, he almost _died_ at the end of the film. That _has_ to have some kind of lasting effect on the human psyche. Out of curiosity, is the term “Shell Shock” still in use today? If so, what’s the new definition?

@michaelkenner3289
@michaelkenner3289 5 лет назад
Shell shock and PTSD aren't the same thing. When an explosive detonates there are rapid changes in air pressure and intense vibrations. If a shell, or other bomb, goes off near enough to a living human it can cause brain tissues to tear. The resulting brain damage tends to cause panic, disorientation and confusion. However shell shock is a physical neurological condition whereas PTSD is a psychological condition. They do tend to be similar and overlap. Plus the term shell shock was useful for explaining PTSD but they are actually different diagnoses.
@DragonxFlutter
@DragonxFlutter 5 лет назад
@@michaelkenner3289 That's interesting; at least from a language standpoint. Instead of discarding the term altogether, they altered it when they had new information. That's cool. I knew that they weren't the same thing; Doctor Hope did say in the video that the term Shell Shock is no longer applied to the psychological effects, which has been classified as things such as PTSD.

You should check out how they used Extremis in the comics. They crossed nano tech with a virus that overrode the entire body's healing system. They also came up with much more inventive uses for it, including creating a human body that could survive on a space station for extended periods of time without suffering the negative side effects that usually result from that.

Regarding your commentary on the "10% of our brain" thing, my first thought was an analogy of "only using 10% of our roads" and that 100% usage would be bumper-to-bumper blockage full of honking and shouting. Not an optimal way for a brain to function, methinks.

''So Iron Man lives with the equivalent of a tiny sun in his chest. What could possibly go wrong? Current tokamak reactors routinely suffer from major disruptions in magnetic confinement, which can be compared to brief, intense flashes of lightning occurring between the fuel and the reactor walls. These can deform or melt the metal parts and cause short circuits. Since Iron Man has survived in the comics since 1963, we can safely assume his small arc reactor is engineered to withstand such major disruptions. However, Stark may be jolted awake in the middle of the night when lightning strikes inside his reactor, and he would have to deal with the armor’s electronics being short-circuited on occasion. Radiation is another hazard in Stark’s life. Fusion reactions release particles called neutrons which can heat water to boiling point-very useful for power generation, but dangerous to humans. Even if all of them are prevented from escaping the arc reactor, over time the neutron bombardment will turn it radioactive. Stark will have to closely monitor the levels of radioactivity in his chest! And there is more bad news for Stark: the electromagnets. Iron is commonly used as the core material in electromagnets, and iron is heavy. The iron-cored electromagnets used in the JET fusion reactor weigh over 3000 tons. Of course, Stark’s small arc reactor is tiny in comparison; additionally, the walls of a tokomak reactor are made of beryllium, which is very light for a metal-its density is less than twice that of the human body. Clever engineering, which we know Stark is capable of, ensures that Stark can easily lift the arc reactor, but it will still sit heavy in the center of his chest.'' got this off of somewhere

Anyone else think of the shrapnelectomy at the end as more a metaphor for him trusting someone enough to work on his PTSD with him? Everything else about MCU Iron Man has been one giant metaphor for PTSD. The suit is his hypervigilance, the palladium is his maladaptivity. The fact that, until the very last film, he only ever says "I am Iron Man" while out of the suit. It's not his suit or his codename, it's his mantra. He copes by declaring himself reforged in iron, when in reality he's still a boozy, paranoid mess. I say this as someone with PTSD who ticks a lot of the same boxes, albeit without ever having built a suit of armour.

Will you do any more Marvel films? Have a suggestion for a show to tackle... Your Lie in April. There's a bit of debate on what condition a certain character suffered from so I'd be curious as to what you might get from the clues over the show (it's not a long show)

Can you examine how scientifically Kamen Rider Ex-Aid. I can understand if you say no to it since it’s hard to find many streaming site with it, and it’s a Japanese series, mainly focused at kids, but please at least consider it.

OK I have a Q. about YT For the longest of time I wasn't getting any ads when a vid plays or during the vid when the time reaches to those yellow points. But now all of a sudden this is my 1st YT vid I'm watching today I'm seeing adds. Any reason why before it wasn't a thing now it is and is there a way to disable it?
