👏👏👏 This needed to be said! As a student at an Osteopathic Medical School, it is sad that large media outlets can potentially perpetuate and enhance the stigma and bias that we already go through.

The View with inaccurate comments once again... Both MDs and DOs are medical doctors. MD does not stand for "medical doctor" but rather "doctor of medicine" in latin, and the job title "medical doctor" applies to physicians of either degree.

The quality of education at the osteopathic medical school I attended was abhorrent. Students primarily used first aid to study and casually took note of lectures for mandatory OMM questions. As someone who was enthusiastic for a quality education experience, it was such a disappointment. I have also received treatment as a patient with both categories (allopathic/ osteopathic) of physicians and I can honestly say, based on my experiences, that the quality of care I received was not the same. Truly, I think OMM is a crutch I see used to emphasize this “holistically philosophy” of treating the whole person - but in reality its seldom ever used.

I think there’s definitely a lean toward primary care fields like family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics etc for DO graduates. That being said, DOs specialize in every single specialty and subspecialty. I am a DO in residency for orthopaedic surgery.

You are right in a way. A lot of DOs end up in family medicine or internal medicine because they are not competitive to get into other advanced specialities. The composition is different in a MD graduating classes. Most DOs don't even get to very competitive residency locations too ( e.g Ivy related big academic research centers. ) instead, they end up in less competitive/rural residencies.

Thanks to you, I just learned that osteopathy and osteopathic medicine are different things. It's very important to clear those misconceptions because one is a pseudoscience and the other is a serious form of science and mixing the concepts is unfair to you, DOs! Your voice needs to reach more people.

If DO & MD are d same, den y der is difference in MCAT & GPA score during admission? Y not getting admitted in d same medical school?Y not both take up only one licensing exam ,ie USMLE.
@landryjo9507
@landryjo9507 8 месяцев назад
DO schools are for less competitive applicants. It has been always like that. Take Rowan university for example. A good comparison because it's in the same university. The average MCAT for the MD school there is about 511(81st percentile) and for the DO school it's about 506(66th percentile). You can see the percentile difference is huge. And that's just the numbers. MD/DO admissions process is done in a holistic manner. Similar to the numbers, DO applicants have weaker applications.

When ACGME looked at the AOA programs, they realized a huge number of them were sub-standard (they had to close down) . So for years, DO graduates were trained in these sub-standard postgraduate programs. There are thousands of such DOs currently practicing and claiming them to be equal to MD graduates. This is an evidence that they are not equal. Not at the applicant pool, not at undergraduate training, not even at the post-graduate training. "Still" there are sub-standard residency programs used to train "osteopathic focussed graduate medical education". These are the plan B for DO students who could not get competitive, regular ACGME residencies. So, they are no way equal. This is the sad state of American medicine affected by lobbying.

AOA residency programs do not exist anymore. They're all under ACGME. So now DOs and MDs are equally trained. Residency is the important part of training, not so much the med school.
@landryjo9507
@landryjo9507 8 месяцев назад
Well they are not exactly equal. Usually DO is the plan-B medicine for applicants who couldn't get into an MD school. DO applicants have slightly less competitive MCAT scores and GPAs than MD applicants. More than the numbers, their applications as a whole, are not that competitive for an MD school. Many applicants don't even consider DO schools until they get rejections from MD schools. Most DO schools are not competitive-enough to land them in competitive specialities. So most of them end up in primary care ( still 100% match rate. Yet this is not their dream field). DO schools are easy to start. COCA is so lax on starting a DO school compared to LCME. That's why there are so many for-profit DO schools popping up in the country with so low standards. Finally, that additional "skill" of OMT is just mainly pseudoscience. While MD students learn evidence-based medicine in their curriculum, DO schools fill up their curriculum with this archaic pseudoscience which talks about spirits in the bone, CSF pulsation, cranial manipulation, lymphatic pumping and other BS.
