It would be really interesting to see you react to one of the first episodes after Jake comes out of prison, where he and Holt debate over whether or not he is ready to get back to the field. It showcases the impact prison has had on Jake's mental health as well as his morals, and it is really interesting!
As an autistic man Holt is my spirit animal. There is one episode where Jake deduces that Holt is in distress by him using a double contraction "shouldn't've", which is radically different from his normal, comically formal, speech patterns. For me that is reverse. If I am in under stress (luckily I have never been in serious distress) I often stop using colloquialisms and curse-words that I had to learn to use to fit in in my teens and revert to a more formal language, often employing little-known, specialized or antiquated words or the dreaded hyperlogic. Example? One of my best friends had a birthday party. His partner talked about their new neighbours, who own a cat. And apparently there exists a rule of thumb that "You should have one more cat litter boxes than you have cats". I was kinda confused and overloaded because many people are talking everywhere and I cannot shut everything out. And my brain on autopilot lets me say: "This means I need one cat litter box."
Oh hey, that first paragraph is me exactly. People frequently remark on the way I speak, but when I'm upset, it gets much more elaborate and the word choice gets much more precise. It seems counterintuitive.
I think a very important thing to note is that this focuses on the American criminal justice system, which is very very different from the UK. While in theory, the US prison system is supposed to have mental health services for prisoners, they are very rarely utilized outside of medication management for already diagnosed prisoners, which leads to a very large suicide rate among inmates. The US prison system also does not focus in rehabilitation, it focuses on punishment. The sentencing is harsh, it’s very rare people’s risk levels are reassessed outside of probation hearings, and when they are reassessed it’s to increase the risk factors. Inmates can also have additional charges added to their crimes in prison, which often times are not crimes that are taken to court. To make matters even worse, when an inmate leaves prison, the quality of life is horrendous. There’s a lot of discrimination Ex-Cons face, making finding work and housing almost impossible. As a result, Ex-Cons often live below the poverty line and are very likely to reoffend because frankly, prison is better than being homeless or having to deal with abusive work environments.
Another major factor in the US prison system is economics. Even aside from the questionable ethics of for-profit prisons, the prison-industrial complex accounts for billions of dollars worth of nearly-free labor for the state, meaning it is actually in the USA's best economic interests to keep people in prison.
Have watched Andy Samberg on SNL, and most of his movie endeavors (Palm Springs and I Love You Man stand out the most) and have never considered myself to carry a torch for him - however Jake Peralta (the man/the legend) could order me to call him daddy and I'd do so without a moment's thought. Brooklyn 99 is like Parks and Recreation - having so much eye candy that it's difficult to keep my crushes straight.
This was great. You're spot with your criticisms of the American justice system. It's also made worse because not only are there virtually no support systems in prison, but the same is true when people are released. So it's more than likely someone will fall through the cracks upon release from prison due to the same lack of resources. John Oliver just did an amazing piece on the medical aspects of it on October 1st, coincidentally.
I feel like in the later seasons holt goes from funny to show stealing. His character evolves so much and he gets to break from his mold that most of the other characters don't ever do
Brooklyn Nine Nine is one of my comfort shows as well. I just binge watched the whole series a few months back over a period of days. I have really extreme ADHD, my kids are grown, I don't work and have a lot unstructured alone time. Having comfort tv on helps me focus a bit more on daily tasks that I need to do throughout the day. There's also a youtube gamer (Jon of Many a True Nerd) I particularly like for that purpose as wel as he has an oddly perfect alignment of Midlands accent, the timbre of his voice, and his overall character that I find very centering. I know I'm not the only one of his viewers that see him in this light. It's reassuring to know that a psychiatrist has comfort shows, btw. It validates the concept of comfort viewing for me.
Dr Elliott, is there any research on what percentage of people had diagnosable mental health disorders prior to going into prison compared to once they were in and/or after release?
Great question. We lack any robust longitudinal data that follows various mental health outcome measures throughout a prison sentence, let alone being able to follow people from the community, to prison, the back into the community again. It would be amazing to have that data but as you can imagine, almost impossible to design.

More studies definitely need to be done when it comes to solitary confinement (especially here in the US, where we have many layers of prison issues that are mentally destructive and life destroying, before you even get to court to be judged, which can take years). And it is also insane that someone can run for and act as president from prison, but you cannot vote even after you have served your time. Prison strips away so many reasons to keep going, to change, or to even want more for yourself when you know SO much is being taken away when you get out anyway, and you will lose family and friends while you are in. I believe it is Norway that will not extradite to the US for a large number of crimes because they have deemed US prisons too inhumane, I watched an old Tory lady who used to be in charge of British prisons visit their newer facility that shows remarkable results and rehabilitation, and she just shit all over it, meanwhile you had prisoners and guards hanging out together safely, cooking their own meals, spending time with family without being monitored even if they were a murderer, learning different trades, and even had a radio station so that they could express themselves to the world outside and talk about why they were in there, the frustration they felt, hope or despair, ect. I think we forget that, if someone is coming out, they will be our neighbor. I worked mostly in kitchens, and a ton of ex-cons make your food (and do a great job). The constant hate and focus on revenge vs justice is a huge problem, and one of the many steps that need to be taken before bills will be passed so they are treated as human beings. So they aren't cooked to death during the summer and aren't literally sentenced to do hard labor on chain gangs. Even when they are paid, it is basically nothing, and that money doesn't get far, especially when some prisons make you have copays for the prison doctor... even if it is just to see the doctor for a formal request to get more pads/tampons. In California, a ton of people and housing is saved because we risk the lives of prisoners by making them firefighters. That job pays well compared to other prison jobs, but you can also fucking die. And even though you get all of the training and experience, you are barred from being a firefighter when you get out. All of these things make the outside seem impossible to survive when all you have known is the life on the inside, as humiliating and brutal as it is.
Boo hoo. Try putting the prison population in the U.S. in some or those prison systems and watch how quickly they're forced to change. It's not prison that breaks most prisoners. They were broken already.
Re: long American prison sentences: my understanding is that usually when you have a lot of charges you get sentenced to serve them all at the same time, but sometimes the judge will be a dick and sentence you to do them one after the other
As for the hair turning grey... A guy I know had an issue some years ago, in his early-mid 40s, he suddenly ended up with an extremely low pulse (less than 20 bpm at one point, would spike to over 100 just by sitting up in the hospital bed) and his hair and beard turned grey almost over night. If I recall correctly, his ultimate diagnosis was stress from overworking, spent 2 weeks in the hospital and some time off from work, and about a month later, his hair was back to it's normal dark colour.
Prisons are a private industry in the US, the high recidivism rate is a feature, not a bug. In a shareholder meeting one of the selling points was that their prisoners will most likely re-offend so the prison system is a stable investment. Not to mention that the US prison system is very much set up to be punitive, not rehabilitative.
The sentencing of hundreds of years is a statement. You don't get to kill multiple people and get to so the light of day. It's to tell the perpetrator that all of your victims will get equal justice. You kill someone, you get roughly 10 years. If you kill several people, each one of the victims is 10 years in prison. And that's just if you live in a death penalty free state. In Texas, if you murder multiple people, odds are, you will be put down.
18:13 Shawshank Redemption talks about being “institutionalized” to the point where prison feels like home, and released prisoners can’t cope with being on the outside. It becomes an important - and tragic- plot point for one of the side characters.
I totally disagree with your decision to keep your mouth out of trouble. You're allowed an opinion and we need more people talking about the problems that exist in our criminal justice system.
Yes, we definitely need more non-Americans reductively lecturing us about removing the splinters in our eyes while ignoring their own. No amount of treatment, rehab, CBT or other is going to even moderately reduce recidivism rates for the near entirety of those in prison for crimes of violence.
Depression symptoms are wild and opposite. Kind of like medicine side effects. Lack of sex drive and increased sex drive, itching or numbness of the left nipple, spontaneous death or rising from the dead. I love reading the warnings.

When I first moved out of my parents house and was finally settled in, I ate two bowls of cereal because I realized I had a few days off but no animals to take care of. I’ve always been around animals since I was born and didn’t know what to do. Only time I’ve been an emotional eater. 😅
I'm always confused by the appeal of dream interpretation. I think I always know what my dreams mean to me personally, so it's kind of confusing to imagine someone *not* knowing that, or thinking that a book written by a total stranger will have more insight than they have themselves. Dreams are patchwork creations from the same systems that give you cravings and urges. Those internals are, individually, trying to influence your behavior. They don't stop just because you're asleep. However, because you're dreaming, they can apply their influence to add aspects of their needs to your dream experiences. Most attempts to add those aspects fail. Some make it through. Half that make it through have nothing to do with the originating need attempting to be communicated. This is because those needs being pushed are pushed by systems that have no idea how the external world works. So the factors that they push into the dream don't always line up with the need that is the original reason for that push. One need originating system pushes one or two factors of the dream, another pushes another, and another, and another. Eventually you have the weirdness of the dream you end up experiencing. Influences change over time, due to changes in individual need push strength, and thus primacy. Your own influence over your dreams operates in the same manner. Except you actually understand how the external world works, so your influences over your dream world and events during lucid dreaming are more coherent. Ultimately, dreams are poor communication attempts from internal systems, but do somewhat successfully train behavior improvements. So it's good that they evolved. They are functionally useful, even though they are weird and not usually accurate or obvious as to original intent.
Modern example of hair changing colour due to stress is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when he got hired as manager of Manchester United compared to when he was sacked. Weirdly it's now 2 years later and his hair is darker again.
Re: 1:08, am I wrong to think that eating to relieve anxiety could be viewed as part of the "fight or flight" response if we think of eating as a way of distracting ourselves from whatever is causing our anxiety? Is distraction = avoidance = flight valid?
On vivid dreaming, I occasionally get paranoia, and if I go to bed paranoid and manage to fall asleep, my dreams consistently feature the same tall, pitch black _thing_ An example of one of these dreams. (To preface this, most people run very weighty and sluggish but in dreams, I run like it's Gary's Mod or something, bouncey, fast. The difference is, whatever I'd be running from, it doesn’t matter.) One night, I went to bed paranoid and had a normal(?) dream that was dark and painterly. I had stepped out on my back porch, looked to the sky and seen writhing shapes in the fog, then I looked back to my yard. . . It was stood there, almost as a scarecrow but I recognized it. If you've ever been walked up on by an animal then you know what it felt like to have a staredown with it. I looked back to the sky, looked down, it was gone. That's even worse. I turned back around, walked inside, looked to my left, and had to look 3 headlengths up to meet it's jawline. I ran out the back door, ran 6 houses down, found myself cornered in a fenced in back yard, waited a minute, it caught me, I woke up. Dreams featuring this exact mf'er in similar surreal circumstances so yeah, the dreams don't mean anything but my dreams do get vivid and they're very much tied to real-world emotional stimulus.
All these stats just affirm my beliefs that the justice system (not just in the US, I speak from a Kiwi perspective) absolutely sucks and putting money into mental health and education over cops will actually reduce crime and reduce the 'need' for prisons.
I recommend you study on a person known as Christina-chan, though she isn't an average trans woman, there has been documentation throughout her life that people can find negative traits on whoever she represents, a today Kanye west if you will

The percentage of transgender people in prison for sexual offences is disturbingly high. I presume that it’s significantly different than the percentage of sex offenders in the transgender community outside, but when we are making decisions about how to deal with trans prisoners, I think the stats of that particular population matters far more than the broad population.
I mean prison isnt supposed to be a vacation. Its a punishment and it should be treated as such. If its easy or you coddle them, what kind disincentive is it? People should think twice before comitting a crime. Like "i dont want to goto jail because it sucks". As far as not doing things to make you look weak like being emotional or whatever. There's nothing you can do about that. You're surrounded by other criminals, some potentially violent and killers etc. When sureounded by other alphas you dont show weakness or you might become prey. Now you could use that as motivation to not be weak and stand up for yourself, but you arent gonna change hardened criminals and alphas etc with a bit of psychology or therapy or group meetings to talk about feelings. Thats just not the reality of the world esp the world of criminals and even more especially hardened criminals. Might suck/hurt to hear, but the truth hurts sometimes :(
punishment is one aspect but its also very important to rehabilitate by changing those (violent) behavioral patterns so the person can eventually go out into the world without falling back into them, reoffending and repeating the cycle. you want them to be a well adjusted member of society some day
In my country and in Norway they mostly focus on getting back into normal life afterwards and the focus is on rehabilitation and trying to give better options in life.... sometimes I definitely disagree with this as the judges here do tend to choose the side of the criminal more than the victim, but in a lot of cases the convicted actually stay out of crime because they can do a study or learn things and get other options. It should be a per person analysis - some people do need a harsher punishment, but if someone is in for drugs/psychosis or something they should get the help (which they actually needed before doing the crime)
It’s not merely punishment. If you don’t rehabilitate people, then you will have higher rates of recidivism. The goal is to punish someone, and then help them to not offend again and be a productive member of society. To do this you have to rehabilitate them, understand what caused them to commit a crime to begin with - ex. Poverty, housing, mental health crisis, low education, etc. and fix that problem so they are less likely to be in a circumstance again where they feel crime is their only way to survive. It’s more nuanced than that. But prison at its core is not just punishment. To think that is pretty harmful. While not everyone is safe enough to be freed into society many people can be. And just letting the system fail in rehabilitation and perpetuate recidivism is unethical. It’s one thing to try and have it still happen but we can’t not even try to rehabilitate someone.
The truth is, prisons don't work. Punishment is very rarely a deterrent when committing a crime. It's just not. Putting people in prisons is vindictive, it's not justice. ESPECIALLY as the only thing the prison achieve is make people less hireable (because of criminal record and age) and better at crime (because of the new prison friends). The whole justice system should be reworked to have people do community service as punishment, and provide job training and/or mental health support so the criminals wouldn't reoffend. (And of course there should be still some isolation measures for extremely dangerous and violent individuals, of course that's the exception. But let's not pretend those are the majority of prison population)
Man i really dislike the whole "cis" stuff. I actually physically cringe when i hear it. Idk if its because its a label being forced on me that i never asked for and dont want, or if its because its a madeup term by some douchebag author on a random forum. Not something that evolved naturally with society like normal words and phrases do. You dont need a term to label everyone, esp not the vast vast majority of people in the world. You just need transgender/trans man/woman. For regular or normal folks, however you wanna put it, its just men and women. So unless someone says "trans-woman" when talking about a woman, then youll know theyre just talking about a woman. Biological woman. Idk why things have to be made so difficult or why we have to put everyone in a damn box or catagory.
It's not about forcing a label on someond or putting someone in a box though? It's literally just shorthand for whether or not someone identifies as the gender they were assigned at birth. Cis literally means 'on this side' or 'on the same side' whereas trans means 'across from' or 'on the other side'. It's no more forcing a label on you as someone referring to me as white or Irish (things I both am) is forcing a label on me. Is it needed in every day speech, maybe not but in certain cobtexts it can be useful. Also terms like 'biological woman' have been co-opted by transphobes and become associated with them so I imagine some people want an alternative to that so people know that they're not part of that group when discussing such topics
All words are made up. That's how they evolve naturally. Someone makes a word, and it starts being used. You don't like it, don't use it. But using the word "normal" for cis... Makes you sound transphobic. Don't be that guy.
You really don't see why a group would have a problem with being labelled the exception to "normal"? Might as well say "unless I say otherwise, I'm talking about a white person, because that's normal". It's degrading and dehumanizing. And you're in a category (transphobic cis male) whether you want to be labelled as such or not.
