This Doctor REACTS video is watching the Family Guy episode "Pilling them Softly" where Stewie is given a dubious diagnosis of ADHD. This gives a good opportunity to discuss what ADHD, why not all inattention and hyperactivity is ADHD, the risks and benefits of stimulants and whether ADHD is overdiagnosed.

Knew someone who found out he had ADHD when he took Adderall illicitly. Rather than get him high, it just made him feel more stable than he could ever remember. He found out he was diagnosed with ADHD as a child but his mom felt it was an over diagnosis and he didn't need medication. Once he got an updated diagnosis and adequate dose of medication, he was able to get his GED, go to college, and his whole life has improved.

My sister got diagnosed with ADHD about 10 years before I did because she was more hyperactive and had a lot more trouble with school. Me on the other hand, I did pretty well in school despite being a huge daydreamer and constant procrastinator. It wasn't until I was an adult, out of school, when I realized I had so much trouble with executive function and I basically had to beg my doctors to take my concerns seriously. I'm basically the poster child for inattentive ADHD and I didn't get diagnosed (or even realize it) until I was about 28.

As a woman I only recently got diagnosed at 23 while a childhood friend of mine (male) got diagnosed in primary school even tho we attended the same class 🙃 and 23 is relatively early for women. They usually get diagnosed after 30 and by this point we have collected all these comorbidities (depression, addiction etc.). Fun life.

I’ve had a doctor grab both my hands ever so gently and go “oh my god did you break your pinky fingers how did this happen?”for me to look them in the eye and explain recessive and dominate genes and what clinodactyly is. That no my unswollen unbruised fingers were in fact not in prayer position when I was struck by a sudden hammer but that it’s my genes and my dads genes and why we both also have bowed legs, you know bilateral symmetry but discrepancies due to genetics. Also doctors refuse to remove any of my cysts/tumors literally there’s no point in them having a job unless it’s semi-botched-semi-livable/survivable immediate first aid. Any thing that has to do with how humans naturally are and develop is trash information based of trash sources and biased examinations typically on the wrong focus point all together, but in the name of progression to actually knowing am I right it’s fun to be a lab rat

I'm dealing with exactly the same issue as an autistic 41 year old female. It's frustrating. But, honestly, it feels good to finally belong somewhere. I'm on the autism subreddit almost every day now. And between the memes and pictures of plushies, I've never felt more connected to other human beings. It's sad that it took this long, but it's so satisfying to relate.

Yup. 38 and waiting on psychiatric referral for potential/likely ADHD having collected a host of other challenges including depressions, anxiety, binge eating, poor relationship with money, impulsivity.... I only took it forwards with my GP after some self diagnosis and trying to untangle the fairy lights of mental health conditions I'd thrown in the bag. Even at that, a lot of the questionnaires and symptom checkers focus a lot more on the hyperactivity than the inattentive side. Unsure how long the referral process is but given the unfortunate NHS crunch currently I suspect looooooooong. The good thing is my potential condition means I do frequently forget about the fact I've not heard anything. Until I then remember and get very impatient about it until I forget again. Good times

My parents refused to beleive I had ADHD, chosing instead to beleive I was an defiant little brat. I stopped "ignoring" them after I had surgery to correct my hearing (I was deaf). Problem solved! As an adult a friend pointed out that it was abnormal to be so frustrated with mundane tasks that I ended up in tears. Attention Deficit Disorder: inattentive type, so I was not disruptive (or male) enough to get help as a child. The strangest part of going on the medication was learning I capable of feeling joy.

My kids school started to suspect she had ADHD in kindergarten. But I insisted we “give her time” and “try everything else” before medication. After years of struggle and falling behind her paediatrician asked why I was so resistant to drugs. I said that I knew she was struggling in school but I love her and I didn’t want her personality to change. Her paediatrician reassured me that wouldn’t happen. We put her on meds and it drastically changed her life for the better. I think portrayals like Stewie are really detrimental. They create fear, that if you put your kid on meds you’re going to turn them into a zombie. In my experience that didn’t happen. My kid is the same bright creative person she was before.

A lot of it is misunderstandings and fear mongering. But I think the more important issue here is that people don't understand dose-dependent relationships. As Dr. Carthy mentioned, if you take the same meds at too high a dose, it *can* affect your personality (like inducing mania, etc.). But lower the dose, and you get the benefits without the side effects. So the people who say "taking this drug will change my personality" are assuming *any* dose of the meds would have the same effect, which isn't how biochemistry works.

I’m a 31 y/o female and was diagnosed at 10. My fiancé and his parents thought he might have it and it took me spending one night for me, a non-medical professional, to basically conclude he had ADHD. He saw a new doctor and they thought the same, but he was terrified of the meds from what he’d heard. I stayed with him on his days off work so he could have someone around when he took it and to reassure him he’d be okay, and now he’s better than ever. After a few weeks he came home and started crying tears of joy about how much better he felt.

I’m a 31 y/o female that was luckily diagnosed at ~10 y/o. The meds I take are life saving, and I may have started them too young, but I’ve always been open to alternatives. I think I’ve only gone through two different meds for it, but the ones I have now work perfectly for me. I already had other diagnosed disabilities growing up and went to very small schools so I think that’s why I was diagnosed so quickly. My mom teaches first grade (6-7 y/o) and she and the parents are excellent on picking up on the signs now, especially with girls. My mom basically ruined a book called “Dr. Mom” while I was growing up looking for answers so I’m so thankful the internet has amazing people to help parents ❤️

To me it's quite interesting that Family Guy (of all sources) had such a robust take on the complexities of ADHD medication. After it being a long-running joke that I had ADHD, my childhood best friend was diagnosed with ADD. He came to school and said "If I have ADD, you DEFINITELY have ADHD". I was officially diagnosed at 18, and the difficulty I could have been spared up to that point took some time to grieve over. I was always a 100%/0% student, and with executive function my post-secondary average was over 90%. For me, meds at a low point and with less on the weekends lets me find the right balance. As my Doctor said, if I had diabetes I wouldn't feel shame about taking insulin. Ain't no shame in the medicine game - Pete Davidson

At uni, I struggled with motivation and executive function to the point where I was failing to complete assignments and flunking out. My then-girlfriend suggested I get tested for ADHD. I went to the campus clinic and asked to be tested, and they gave me a huge survey to fill out; then I sat down with the psychologist and psychiatrist and had a conversation (I guess technically an interview?). At the end of it, he looked at me and went, "you had no trouble filling out this form quietly and sitting still for it for 30 minutes. We've been talking for another 30 minutes while I've been changing the subject every minute or so, and you've had no trouble following along and keeping focused. You don't have ADHD. But between the answers you provided on the survey, and what I've heard from you today, I'm concerned you have a pretty severe anxiety disorder, and that may be causing the symptoms you're noticing." TL;DR: I thought I had ADHD, turns out I'm just an anxious and depressed mess, so... yay for varying forms of broken brains? 🤷‍♂

That doesn't seem like a reliable diagnostic process. I was diagnosed at age 26 and have been on a relatively strong dose of Concerta XL for a decade. I would have no difficulty filling out a form when I was deeply invested in the process, and a conversation full of tangents sounds really fun and engaging to me.

I was lucky to be diagnosed early as an afab person (despite knowing I’m trans now) as I was diagnosed with ADHD at seven. To be fair my other learning disability wasn’t diagnosed until a couple years ago when I was twenty, but looking back both affected the way I interacted with the world. Admittedly I didn’t know what I was diagnosed with initially until I was fifteen, because my parents assumed that I didn’t need to know specifics about it, and I learned I had it from a teacher. Which sucks, come to think of it, but I knew from an early age that I had a learning disability, not only because of the trouble I was having with peers, but keeping on task, etc, in class. I think you actually treat it in a way that doesn’t contribute to negative stereotypes about ADHD and I appreciate that

In my opinion, coming from someone who has spent some time in a psych ward where literally everyone was diagnosed with ADHD and given Ritalin, just for convenience's sake, I feel like ADHD is, at the same time overdiagnosed and underdiagnosed. Oftentimes those who suffer in silence don't get the help they need while "difficult" children are simply labeled ADHD and then given medication to make them easier to handle. I've had buddies go their whole life wondering why the couldn't get their life under control until they were finally diagnosed with ADHD in their mid-20s, while other friends of mine were given Ritalin all throughout Middle and High School only to find out that their difficulties regarding concentration and getting things done were caused by anxiety, depression or OCD rather than ADHD. The problem is: ADHD is often diagnosed by how much that person is "bothering" others, and not by how they feel on the inside themselves. That's why, I think: ADHD is overdiagnosed AND underdiagnosed.

A frustrating point (besides the ADHD = "physically hyperactive boy with bad grades" stereotype) is that it feels like only stimulant medications are shown. Where I live (Japan), most stimulant drugs for ADHD are illegal. We do have Concerta, but non-stimulant atomoxetine and guanfacine seem to be heavily preferred. There have been deportations for people bringing Adderall or similar from overseas.

I already had severe hypersomnia (which has reduced by a lot, but I was sleeping 120 hrs a week at peak; now I average closer to 66) so sleeping more was not an option. (Yes, I have other chronic illnesses that surely contributed and no, the sleep could not be explained by depression alone. I spent about 7 years sleeping my life away).

I was diagnosed young and the meds really help me get my thoughts in order so I actually do things instead of daydreaming or whatever, I'm the same person but able to do things I normally find really challenging. If I wasn't also autistic then I think my medication could help me get far in life, instead the autistic stuff sticks around even when the adhd is more mellow. Representations like Stewie with this medication holds people back from medicating kids with true adhd who could benefit from having a little more order in their heads. It's not just for if you're bouncing off the walls

I am a person with learning disabilities. I am Dsylexic and Dsygraphic, and as such have problems with reading and writing. Unfortunately, due to a combination of environment factors, I was labelled as a problem child by my public school's administration and there was a push to medicate me as if I had adhd. Thankfully, that didn't happen, but medicating a child just to get them to sit down and shut up does happen. As an adult, one of my concerns is that child who need help with their disabilities or problems at home are just being drugged out because of either bad or overworked teachers. I know that there are kids who do have ADHD and will benefit from having the proper medication, and they should be the ones getting it, but there are other kids with other problems who need different supports and they should be receiving them as well.

3:59 For my English class this year, we actually just finished a research project a few weeks ago in which we could choose a controversial topic of our choosing and take a side on it and write about it, with 3 arguments and 2 counterarguments in which you prove the counterarguments wrong. My topic was actually "Is ADHD overdiagnosed?" I asked my teacher to make an exception for me; I wanted to give merit to both sides of the argument, with my main argument being that ADHD is actually severely underdiagnosed instead, while also giving merit to the arguments regarding why ADHD would be overdiagnosed.

As usual, awesome video. Family Guy really delivered a good base for this very interesting and complicated topic. It's always nice to learn more, and in this case about how ADHD and its medication works. I don't have to deal with ADHD myself nor in my environment, but it's one of the likely most famous issues where people confuse some things. All medical conditions and diseases (physical or mental) have a list of possible symptoms. Not every person showing some of these necessarily has the condition. Not everyone with the conditions displays all the symptoms. Yes, and sometimes the medication is more conveniant for the caregiver/surroundings than useful for the patient. (similar with sleeping pills in hospitals/retirement homes or tranquilizers sometimes (THAT I experienced myself. Being extremely distressed (not agressive or anything) over bad news in a psychiatric juvenile unit and being threatened to be given lorazepam to calm down - and being less challenging. I was not the only one though. The "hard to parent" kids acting out: lorazepam)...) I love how you tackle this. Thank you

I’m so confused about my ADHD diagnosis. I mean, it makes sense that I have it in ways, and I was diagnosed by my psychiatrist with a QB test, but My result was hyperactive/impulsive type. This is weird, because I am a pretty chill person that isn’t usually bouncing off the walls, and I’ve always been able to pay attention and follow rules well. I am however late to pretty much everything despite my best efforts (like setting multiple alarms/timers), and I get really jittery and flustered and fidgety in social situations, and can be loud and maybe obnoxious at a party when I’m comfortable. So I think my social anxiety growing up has hidden it.

I'm not arguing for medication specifically just working to address the problems associated with add instead of ignoring them

I fully believe that ADHD is a real thing, but absolutely everybody around me is coming out with it, and every little slight personality trait is getting absorbed into the diagnosis, and now there is a push on within the social group to label everybody else as also having ADHD Because we do sometimes forget things, or walk into a room and forget why we were there, or sometimes find things hard to complete. There is complete levels to all of this stuff. But it’s alarming how much recruitment seems to be going on by people recently diagnosed. It’s also getting used as a blanket excuse for rude or annoying behaviour which has become more prevalent since the diagnosis, I’m empathetic to a point, but very much, to a point!

And then everyone found out how smart I was, before then I was completely incapable of participating in class, I got in trouble every day and couldn’t understand why because from my perspective I wasn’t doing any of this on purpose it just kept happening and I couldn’t stop it.

It took me doing my dissertation on the underdiagnosis of adhd in Women for me to realise I had adhd. My GP wouldn't refer me because I was getting good grades at university. I had always done well academically which was often used to dismiss me when I asked for support. I was ready to give up again but my friends convinced me to at least try another GP. I saw a different GP who actually listened and managed to get referred. It took 2 years for a diagnosis, at my appointment my psychiatrist was surprised no one around me had noticed. Now on medication at 22, my mental health is far better, I'm doing better on my doctorate and I've finally been able to pass my driving test. The biggest difference I noticed was that my brain was quiet like someone had hit the noise cancelling on my brain. Everything became much easier to manage.

I'm not sure if I'm adhd, but I kinda diagnosed myself with autism, or being on the spectrum, much later in life. Looking back on my childhood, I recognised a lot of autistic and maybe also some adhd traits, but I just got really good, really fast at masking. Plus autism used to have a rather narrow definition (that we knew) - like, really non-functional, non-verbal children or something like that - and so nobody thought to have me tested or give me a diagnosis. I am not sure if I should try to get diagnosed now as an adult. A part of me thinks it's pointless, but I do see that there are areas in my life that suffer because of those autistic traits and it makes me wonder if a diagnosis and therapy might not improve my life... But idk, it seems complicated to unravel all the stuff under the mask. Anyway, just sharing my experience.

As a person with adhd I'm always worry of academics and people who want to give an adhd diagnosis to kids. Mostly as a person with adhd I can recognize key behaviors and honestly most of the time they're jsut being kids. Meaning little young people with lots of energy being pent up ina classroom for 8 to 9 hrs a day and told to sit still and watch people. It doesn't work and honestly teachers aren't anywhere near trained to handle children anymore. Most are bluntly wanting to act as amateur psychologists rather than learning how children act and seeing how to respond. I personally am also early of giving adderall or any other meds to adhd kids simply because they need to learn how to live with it without the meds. Honestly people think adhd is jsut take a pill and it's done without learning habits to slowly learn to live with the condition and have the medication as a plus. It's always a struggle to teach people these things and honestly I worry for children who don't have parents ready to learn about how best to live with adhd.

I mean obviously they where intentionally making fun of how quickly people were getting prescribed Ritalin in the 90s before making certain that they had a condition that could benefit from it without any sort of process of elimination making sure it wasn't something else with similar physical displays, or at least that is how it looked to the average person, but the same thing could be said about a lot of health issues where screening has improved over time including things like cancer where it looks like cancer numbers have risen but in reality it is just the fact it is getting diagnosed way earlier because of better screening. The issue comes though with the better screening what is the appropriate time to react because some things exist but don't continue to develop and so never become a problem later and so if you start treating too early you could be treating for zero reason. For example you could have say an early stage of Thyroid cancer that isn't giving you any issues or symptoms but it gets noticed when you are doing a CT scan of your chest and lower neck because you are having breathing issues and nothing is showing up in xrays. Which you can choose to treat that right away having surgery, dealing with radioactive iodine and having to take hormone replacement medication every day for the rest of your life or you can choose to do nothing, maybe just keep an eye on it and only act if symptoms start to immerge and you can go 30 years before it actually starts to become an issue saving you 30 years of having to take drugs daily. With ADD/ADHD in the 90s it definitely seemed like anyone who wasn't 100% average was diagnosed with it without actually seeing if maybe other things are causing similar symptoms or even just realizing that some kids are just naturally more active than others. That may have just been a case of better detection, but it still has the issue of "when is the right time to treat the issue, and when is the right time to just monitor and watch before taking any actions?"

I think i might have adhd and ive struggled all my life with things in and out of school but im really scared to persue a diagnosis as im a really nervous person who likes to people please a lot and therefore comes across as really quiet and im also of the female sex (im genderfluid tho) so im worried someone will look at me, see that im quiet and see that im a certain gender and just dismiss my concerns and not take me seriously. This is a very real concern i have and it sucks.

I'm 27 and I was diagnosed at the age of 7 and I've been on medication ever since. I have SEVERE ADHD, I'm pretty much textbook. I'll joke that if you looked up the definition of ADHD you'll find my name as a prime example. Whenever I tell someone I have ADHD, exactly zero people have been surprised. I challenge anyone who doesn't believe it exists to hang out with me for three days and I guarantee they will believe... and I'm medicated with 40mg of act amphetamine... I'm on that high of a dose and I'm still a prime example

Stewie's reaction to the medication is way off. I have ADHD and stimulants quieten my brain and make me feel relaxed, but not high. You know noise cancelling headphones? Stimulants are like thought cancelling brain.... Phones for people with ADHD.

Oh don't worry, if I'm up all night watching videos it's because of my brain, not because of you. But it would help if you tried being a bit more boring and sleep-inducing to watch. Being interesting is not conducive to sleep.

If someone already had ADHD and took a higher dose of their meds, could that cause mania?
@biancan3257
@biancan3257 Год назад
Yes, but only if they do have a commorbid condition, like anxiety or bipolar, than it could trigger an anxiety attack and/or manic episode. If you have ADHD without any other condition the excessive stimulants usually make the contrary: it flattens your affect and make you a little slow...
