He tried to kill himself when Unity dumped him. Besides it he takes all the risky adventures because he doesn't care about either dying or living, there's nothing in his life making him think: "Well, I should live because at least I have......" Isn't that interesting? You may say he has everything because of his unlimited power and intelligence, but he actually feels like he has nothing to lose, that's why he's suicidal.

@@RobertRBest I believe the psychiatrist in the episode did start out assuming just that, putting "pickle" into air quotes and I think when Rick came in she said something along the lines of "oh that wasn't a metaphor?". Could be wrong, has been a long time since I saw it. I don't think I would have made that connection otherwise, English not being my first language 😅

Yeah, the therapist section of the episode is handled infinitely better than I remember, a genuinely clever way to surmise all of the immediate issues that were going on with the family at the time. I think the narrative has sort of gone up and down in recent seasons, I mean, everything besides the incest baby was something I could still appreciate, but I think a lot of this still carries over, considering Morty’s dependency on Rick. I think the part that makes Rick and Morty have fans that are so aggressive to anything that doesn’t serve their delusions about the characters is that the self awareness in the show is a great deal more subtle than it is in Harmon’s other memorable show: Community. Community was constantly self evaluating and was always aware of what it was and what it’s existence meant to its fans and to an intellectual capacity. Harmon proved on that show that he is one of the best (Psychological-Dramatically influenced) Comedy writer and creator we’ve ever seen, stringing together brilliant concepts that are often intensely crass and building them into a complex narrative that follows an ever growing structure that’s just off in the background. Rick and Morty is brilliant too, it just doesn’t wear its complexity and nuance on its sleeve like Community did, and as much as the show seems to be all about how smart it is, it just isn’t about hyping itself up. More than anything, its a lot more about the constant chaotic conundrum that serves as the fallout that follows the hype… and the hype is just too strong at times to look past. That’s why so many people think that the season 4 and 5 have been a step down, they arrived faster and they made the hype thinner. Some of us just don’t want to look past the hype… which is why people don’t want to let Rick and Morty naturally progress into the fallout phase of the narrative, which is perhaps why it really has to.

I don't know why someone would want to be like Rick. Ok, everyone would like to be as smart as him, but he has a lot of mental issues, these toxic fans need to stop, the guy isn't a role model and even the creators know it.

@@semnome9536 from listening to his podcast it seems like Harmon's greatest frustration (or one high on the list) is that people don't get that point. i love Rick, but he's pretty fucked. i mean, arguably the most powerful being and the most intelligent, but it keeps biting him in the ass because he can't get his shit together. it's literally pure luck he hasn't killed his own family and everyone he cares for by accident.

Take a look at the creators talk about the season, and the episode, and fixate on the very same things about that ep that you suggest comes from the toxic fans; because I think it's a mistake to attribute it to the fans when it is a dynamic and tension that runs deeper.

It's a meme to get fixated on the pickle thing 🙄 there's nothing toxic about fixating on it. People don't have to delve into the messages, some people just want to laugh.

It is pretty great that the show continuously gets people to demonstrate why we need the messages of the show. The central theme of this episode felt to me, when I watched it, that calm boring maintenance is often much more central to our lives and well-being than the big, showy moments and drama we tell stories about. Often a breakdown after an insult or failure has more to do with how much sleep your getting than how big a deal the event actually was. Rick goes on this huge, dramatic adventure where he has to overcome huge triumphs and accomplishes amazing things, but none of it really *mattered,* and he and everyone he cares about would have been better off if he had just... done the boring maintenance and gone to therapy. Meanwhile, the boring clique scenes with the therapist are the ones that *actually mattered* to their wellbeing; boring to watch, but central to the character arcs. And why do we, as a society, need to be reminded sometimes to focus on the boring but meaningful parts instead of the fun, dramatic, meme-y parts of the show? _Man in the distance yells._ "PICKLE RICK!!!" That's why.

It's not "toxic fans" it's you not being part of a joke and feeling left out. Get over yourself.

so I do get the point of the therapist but if there really was a person like Rick bringing down multiple galactic governments crossing between a many many dimensions and species of aliens and even committing mass genocide on multiple versions of himself this therapist wouldn't not be qualified to handle Rick at all a better more realistic example would be veterans returning from way no ammount of class room books will really teach a therapist what a soldier goes threw or relate to them and there fore can never truly help them its why alot of therapy does fail especially with veterans who can't bring it up how do you talk about shooting a 13 year old suicide bombed when you know the college grad is doing nothing but faking it and thinking about how evil you are that's what people mean and how it related to Rick this therapist doesn't have the first clue what it would really be like to have a life like them so she has absolutely no right or is even right to tell them how to live there lives or process there emotions

He’s the most toxic parts of Dan Harmon(a very civilian writer)’s personality and this therapist was repeating what Dan Harmon’s therapist said to him and thousands of Dan Harmon fans missed the point and continued using Rick’s behavior to excuse their own assholishness.

Don't give up. Try other therapists, try talking to a psychologist or psychiatrist, work collaboratively with them, see which treatments will serve best for your unique hardships.

therapy is just like dating or finding a good piece of clothing. It takes time and experimenting a lot until you find one you like and that fits you.

Well if you're an adult and can afford therapy and can't clearly state at least one issue maybe you don't need it. Unless you can't even start then...... keep looking

Yes, with caregiving relatives, nannies, family friends, teachers and other adult authority figures. Anyone who exerted any kind of emotional or psychological dependency upon you is potentially contributing to the dynamic. I had a particularly devious and mean-spirited older half-brother and sister who were passive-aggressively cruel and it made me extremely suspicious of adults in general. Turns out, that's not such a terrible suspicion. 😏
