The bullet hitting the spine could also explain why it didn't go straight through the guy and into Joel. The bullet probably shattered after going through his spine and slowed down enough that the splinters would still all be inside. Bone tends to have a lot of stoppage force. More than flesh, anyway.

6:09 You might have missed that the guy that gets shot mentions he can't feel his legs. I imagine the bullet hit his spine. That would probably have enough stoppage force to prevent the bullet from going into Joel.

The soldier holding the dying man’s chest wasn’t doing compressions, he was covering the fatal knife wound where Joel stabbed him after Ellie’s bullet didn’t kill him. You also could have talked about Joel’s hearing loss that they discuss near the end of the episode, how firing a gun can affect your hearing, especially on just one side. And finally…as a medical professional, I can’t believe you didn’t dispel the assertion that diarrhea is genetic!
@archeryguy1701

I think you got your guys backwards.... the guy with the knife wound was the guy on the left in this scene (not shown in the clip for this video). I think you have the right idea that the one guy is trying to cover up/stop a bleeding wound, but I'm pretty sure that guy is one of the ones Joel shot.

@berlineczka
@berlineczka Год назад
Also, the "no preservatives" is basically marketing bullshit. Salt is a preservative. Sugar is a preservative. Also, most of these products picked physical preservation (UHT, vacuum packaging, pasteurisation) over chemical ones (preserving substances), so it's not like they are not preserved. Otherwise they'd be spoiled within days.

4:05 you have to also consider that when seat belts were first implemented they were 1 strap that went across the hips. This caused more intensive localized force to the abdomen whereas now the seat belts go from the upper torso/shoulder to the hip which spreads the force out and causes less localized trauma to the soft, unprotected abdomen.
@Yog-slagunar
@Yog-slagunar Год назад
the seat belt syndrom is not far off from a short observation in WW1. Since after helmets were issued to soldiers, head wounds went up dramatically! Meaning helmets are dangerous..... BUT in reality it was because all the injured was not killed on the spot

@arklytte
@arklytte Год назад
With regards to the Chef Boyardee 'No Preservatives' thing...remember, in this universe, the world stopped in 2003, LONG before so many of our modern sensibilities to things like, well, tons of preservatives in our food. Back in the early 2000's, most canned food was FULL of salt, preservatives, and artificial EVERYTHING. So I have no doubt that a 20 year old can of 2003 Chef Boyardee would be just fine to eat. Whereas, a 5 year old of MODERN Chef Boyardee would probably give you the mega trots, right before it killed you with some kind of hyper dysentery.

My dido (grandpa) lived with my parents and I from when I three until he passed away when I was eight. He was a WWII vet and kept everything and I’d often catalogue all the pics, maps, and documents digitally. Last year my mom and dad were doing a deep clean of his furniture (we use his room as a guest room) and my mom noticed something sticky at the bottom of one of the drawers. Not only did my dido bring it back, but kept WWII spaghetti rations in a drawer since at least 1994 without anyone noticing. My mom quickly triple bagged it and it’s now in a safe place. According to my dad it looks “impressively edible”.

3:55 I was a passenger in a crash with no seatbelt on and the car flipped on the highway (no airbags either). Had brain trauma/swelling, a skull fracture, was partially scalped, chest avulsion (jaggedly ripped off and hanging), both lungs collapsed, severe liver laceration, and severe road rash burns over half my body. I clearly remember being asleep one minute and the next in the middle of the highway confused. People stopped to help and apparently they said I looked like Carrie drenched in blood. I remember talking to paramedics and then it goes black til I woke in the ICU. It was a week later and I had been in a coma and intubated/on a ventilator. I can imagine that if this happened in that world, it wouldn’t be a survivable situation.

The same type of Survivorship Bias was found when soldiers started wearing helmets in WW1 - the amount of head injuries greatly increased so some thought it was the helmet's fault, missing the fact that what is now a head injury would have likely been a head trauma fatality without the helmet

I do believe that we see on Bryan, the young man Ellie shot to save Joel, that Joel finished him off with a knife to the chest. We get a moment to see Bryan's bare chest with a clear stab wound around this scene. So, this fellow probably wasn't so much trying CPR as he was doing what he could to maintain pressure on that wound.

Always look forward to your thoughts on the episodes! I hope you’re not too busy editing all this on top of your actual job 😅 I agree with everyone else that the person Ellie shot was paralysed, although it certainly was a risky shot from Ellie who didn’t know better/where to aim. Joel’s almost surgical precision of his shots makes a hell of a contrast to Ellie’s risky/dangerous one, which I think might have also been a point they were trying to make. “Ellie did not shoot to kill” kind of way. I did wonder if Joel would be able to walk off that kind of strangulation, even with bruising, wouldn’t it make it hard to breathe/cause complications? Just speculating!

Chef B (just like most mass produced canned food) uses A LOT of sugar and salt, so there may be no explicit or synthetic preservatives, but there's a reason beyond the Golden (flavor) Ratio that stuff is included. Also- doesn't apply to Bill's prepped supply- but the refined/fortified base ingredients thing may make some cans more susceptible to carrying the fungus and could be why Ellie's def never seen it despite warehouses being stacked with similar products.

Dr Hope, you as always are doing these episodes JUSTICE as always, along with Dr Chris Raynor from different fields of practice (he is an Ortho doc). I am heartened by your posts :D I have had extensive firearms training and working with all kinds of firearms over the last 11yrs. The failures in Ellies training by Joel were very, VERY bad. Maybe thats just because he wasnt, if i recall, a veteran. But the way he trained her for a few mins left her wide open to shooting randomly, or perhaps mishandling a firearm she was not taught to check to be clear, and killing someone near to her. Everyone who has, or is going to handle a firearm must know and practice how to ACT and PROVE that firearm, every time they come in to contact with it, especially if it comes from someone else. You MUST make sure it is pointed in a safe direction and then CLEAR it to your standards before reloading and then using it. Anything else makes for a much higher risk of harm or death.

That "Will he live?" scene is quite funny. The way I read it was that Joel stabbed the guy, killing him earlier. So this was Monty Python-esque. Like, "He's dead"... "But what if I had a doctor!"... I was in a car accident at 80km/h, and the worst part of it was the pain from the seatbelt. I had a rash-like bruise that extended from my shoulder, across and down my chest, between my breasts, (where my bra exploded and a wire impaled itself), down to my side, and all the way across my abdomen. Like a perfect, purple seatbelt. I also had a few hematomas beneath my skin along the extent of the bruises. I was lucky. My sister was supposed to be in the car with me but she backed out last minute. She would have been sitting behind me, where the impact crushed the door all the way in to the centre console.

You talked about the longevity of canned goods and how it decreases considerably if the can is damaged. In Ep3, when Ellie and Joel are loading the truck up at Bills, Joel tells Ellie to pack all the cans, but to avoid any cans that are dented or swollen. In the scene where Ellie shoots Bryan to save Joel, you mentioned she probably came close to hitting Joel. I think that's a nod to the game. That moment in the game is different, Joel's head is being held underwater and Ellie shoots the guy in the head and kills him. Then Joel gets mad at Ellie because the shot was a little too close to Joel for his comfort. But really it was just him lashing out at her because SHE had to save HIM. I like the way the handled it in the show compared to the game.

When Kathleen asked if Bryan could survive by asking "What if we had a doctor?" She isn't asking it out of concern for this guy... She fully intends to kill this doctor that isn't giving up Henry's location, however she might get resistance from killing the only doctor amongst the people... So by proving a doctor wouldn't be able to save anyone from a fatal injury, she is justified in killing him

I believe all bullets would be turned into hollopoints by drilling a bit into them. and making some saw cuts hollowpoints flare out upon impact and dump all the energy into the target this differs from Full Metal Jacket bullets (the typical ones with copper outsides) where they are better at penetrating through objects. FMJs are better for military and even police that will often need bullets to go through obstacles since hollowpoints are terrible at penetrating. so hollowpoints would be an absolutely necessity to deal with the infected as they would be better at destroying the insides of them this would also mean that overpenetratio is less likely and thus Joel would probably not be hit

The currency was drying up, so everybody's favorite plumber started dabbling in the drug trade. It had a disastrous effect on the Toads. Let's just say that's why we have Princess Peach now and not Princess Toadstool. The really sad thing is they were already sitting on a gold mine. Those power up mushrooms are the number one ingredient in Cialis.
