Other than your trashing of Goonies I enjoyed your perspectives. As an American who was 16/17 when this CLASSIC was released, we wanted kids with character and these kids had it. Feldman is a child acting legend even more than he’s an adult “hack”. Josh Brolin so different than anything he’s done since. I wish you’d had seen it as a young person because I believe it would be in your heart forever. :).

I didn't think I'd trashed The Goonies Mark. I think I said pretty much what you've just said but I didn't realize Josh Brolin was a child when he made this one. He looked like an adult playing the part of a child and was there to ensure there was a bit of acting ability. The young lady who played his girlfriend too as she was pretty good. But overall, there is an obvious lack of ability on show and I think Richard Donner got a bit caught up in the mayhem between the boys who were clearly enjoying their adventure. As I said, I'm prepared for it all now so I think I will enjoy it the next time I see it. John.

John, I apologise but Ive never seen any of the Fast and Furious franchise, but apparently number 5 is the best. We're both fans of the Shining and Dr Sleep does'nt dissapoint. Only downside to the 4k pack is that only the theatrical cut is in 4k as the extended edition is infinitely better, clocking in with an extra half hour. The Cleopatra DVD { 2 or 3 disc} has an excellent making of documentary.

I don't think I'd want to see the longer version of Doctor Sleep Clive but maybe one day. A lot of films are simply too long these days and Doctor Sleep as it stands was just about perfect but on the cusp of going on too long. A few people have said the fifth Fast & Furious film is the best so if number 7 is good I may even get back that far. Don't ever want to see the first one again but who knows, maybe I'll get into them. Not exactly the best films in history but sometimes I really enjoy a ridiculous all-action extravaganza. I'll have to get Cleopatra after the Film In Focus 14 page retrospective in Cinema Retro. That magazine has cost me a lot of money over the years! John.

There are flaws in The Shining Andreas. But Doctor Sleep may cover them. I did mean to mention that I'm thinking about a 'does Doctor Sleep explain the ending of The Shining video?' video but I haven't thought it all through yet. Be an interesting little project though. John.

Hey John, so glad you enjoyed Dr. sleep as far as the movies gross I’m not surprised as at least in the US The marketing for this movie was just about non-existent I never even heard about it until it was coming to video. I was one of many that encouraged you to see this film I was reluctant and didn’t want to tell you how great I thought this sequel was afraid that I would possibly create high expectations as I feel when you make a sequel especially two a iconic movie you cannot half ass it and I’m so glad they did not if you haven’t yet definitely check out the special features there is a great segment with the Director and Stephen king I found it very interesting that this movie really wasn’t A sequel to his book the shining really a sequel to the movie The shining which reportedly he has never really liked maybe Mr. King is softened a little bit about Stanley Kubrick Version. Looking forward to your review of my fair lady I intend to pick that up this Black Friday but the upcoming 4K besides the thing I’m looking forward to is the guns of navarone anyways have a good one as always keep the videos coming john

Doctor sleep was an amazing sequel we could only have dreamed of ,the 4k blu-ray was a beautiful digital ice perfect version. The Goonies is a nostalgic trip for most 80s and 90s kids and cult loved by many , I have to say a little bit critical on the review plus an awesome 4k upgrade 👍😉
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
Doctor Sleep is a classic film in its own right. The image quality wasn't so good on my system but the makers might have favoured Dolby Vision over HDR which would explain why many people say it's one of the best. Not sure about The Goonies though. It's a good enough transfer but it's not brilliant to look at and probably wasn't on 35mm so if true then there's nothing wrong with the 4K per se. But it is a film that you had to see as a child and somewhat disappointing to watch it in your 50s if you didn't see it as a youngster. I do think I'll enjoy it much more next time around. Have to remember to put the subtitles on though so I can understand everything that's being said. Nothing wrong with the sound just garbled dialogue from the children on occasion. John.

Morning John. The Goonies is a favourite, I never saw it on the big screen. I first saw it on TV, it must have been one of the first time it had been broadcast. I bought on DVD and Blu-ray not sure if I'll upgrade to 4K though, Richard Donner did some good uns. I wasn't that impressed with Doctor Sleep, it was just OK nothing special for me. The Fast and Furious film get more ridiculous with each film, I like em though. They're very entertaining aren't they. We got the Blu-ray of 1-8 and Hobbs and Shaw on 4k. The Blu-ray box set of 1-8 is a cheap way of catching up with the series, I think we paid £35 for it. I ain't seen Lucy. What's your thoughts on the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League in 1.33:1?
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
Greetings Steve. I haven't seen Justice League so I can't comment other than it really isn't my cup of tea these days. Then again, Christopher Nolan's Batman films were a nice surprise so one day I may take a peak. The Goonies does get mixed feedback but the current evidence seems to confirm it had to be one you saw as a child to love it. I didn't and it's a bit of a hard watch at times as a result because the children really aren't the best young actors we've ever seen. I'm not sure I want to see all of the Fast & Furious films because I suspect they'd get a bit tiresome after a while but I do expect to take a look at another one sometime in the future - 5 has been most recommended but I may still go for number 7 and see how I get on with that. Sorry to learn you didn't think much of Doctor Sleep. It has had extremely good feedback on here but if we all though the same about everything then we'd have nothing to discuss. John.

I'm a huge fan of Lucy and I think the 4K transfer on that one is up there as one of the finest 4K transfers you can get. I'm not going to lie but I can't watch anymore Fast and the Furious movies and I think I'm done with them. But fair play to John for sending that over to you and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before you do come around to The Goonies and thank you so much for the shoutout John. Titans of cult have definitely knocked it out the park with this one. Unfortunately John I didn't get around to watching The Shining or doctor sleep but I still hope to do so in the next week or two because I am curious to see what the picture is like on Dr Sleep. I I had a feeling you were going to love that movie and I did say to you before I thought it was one of the finest sequels out there.

You and I have strikingly similar opinions of movies Keith. Not sure about The Goonies because it does have quite a few flaws but if I'd have seen it as a youngster that would have given me a different opinion because it would have seemed like such an adventure but I'm not so young any longer! I almost ordered the Titans of Cult edition but I suspected I wouldn't think much of the film because I kept running the trailer and it wasn't a good advertisement. As it turns out it was quite an accurate portrayal of the complete film. I do think I'll like The Goonies a lot more second time around but will have to remember to put subtitles on to understand what one or two of the children are actually saying. Fast & Furious 8 is tosh but it's just so damned entertaining. And it looks great too... better than Doctor Sleep by a country mile which is odd when you think it's a 2K and Doctor Sleep is a genuine 4K. But it could be different on your system. What a great film Doctor Sleep is though. John.

The first film was a bit of a let down in that regard whereas if there had have been some wonderful classics and some fabulous supercars it might have been different. This 8th film is complete rubbish but who cares when it looks and sounds this good and is so entertaining? As for Doctor Sleep - amazing film. I just purchased my first physical media 4k release this week to start my collection and it was… Lucy. I had read that the transfer was quite good and it is one of my guilty pleasure movies. I’m glad you enjoy it and it’s quality so I’m pleased this will be the first disc I watch when I receive my new 77” OLED. What would you recommend as my next purchase? I’m leaning towards The Ten Commandments or Murder on the Orient Express. Thank you for sharing your passion and creating such good content.

Your next purchase??? A 4K video projector!!! But failing that, your next disc purchase should be The Ten Commandments AND Murder on the Orient Express. Both are up there with the best ever 4K disc releases but both have an entirely different look. The clarity of Orient Express is currently unsurpassed on my system but the Technicolor of Ten Commandments means it's the best colour wise. It was also VistaVision so twice the size of normal 35mm. Orient Express was a 65mm shoot so about 2.5 times 35mm. Lucy had some genuine IMAX in there so put that with the other two titles and you'll have three of the best ever 4K discs. Good to have you here Bald Alien! John.

It is easier to find locally in Canada for some reason. However, I just read one of my fav films of all time… John Carpenter’s The Thing is being reissued in 4k next week. Nice summary Bob. I think Doctor Sleep is a little more disturbing than The Shining. It's really quite harrowing due to how evil the villains really are in this one but that is the film's power. The Goonies will always have a solid place in my heart, Guys! I was 10 years old back in 85 when I saw it at the Cinema, and I thought it was pure magic. My Wife and I watched the 4K Disc a few weeks ago and every time I watch The Goonies it just takes me back to a special moment in time. We thought the Disc looked and sounded fantastic and is a solid upgrade over the already impressive BluRay. Its always tickled me how Stunt man Ted Grossman was always popping up in Spielberg projects through the 70's and 80's. He was the Stiff in the Fridge in Goonies, the Estuary victim in Jaws, the FBI agent in E.T & one of the crew claiming back the Cross of Coronado from young Indy at his house in The Last Crusade.

It seems we are of a similar age. The movies we had as children were such a huge part of our lives back then. I wonder if that is changing now that kids are growing up with the internet, iPhones, Pads etc. Most 'intellectual properties' are multi-media these days. It will be interesting to see how that ages, and if it brings the same nostalgia and sheer 'fandom' we have for films. Take Harry Potter for example. I'm not a huge fan, but if you are there are books, films, games, websites. It must be tremendously exciting to have all that based around a franchise you love. I guess we had comics for some films, maybe an 8-bit video game, but it pales in comparison to what is around today. Best wishes, Lee

Some have told me they are no longer projecting genuine IMAX so you'd have to check they are getting a 15/70mm IMAX print in before splashing out. Apparently a few of the genuine IMAX cinemas around the world have stopped running film for video projection. I suppose most patrons wouldn't know the difference and don't care anyway. The BFI IMAX at Waterloo and the Science Museum are still running film so if they get a 15/70 print in then it's worth a trip and a night or two in the Covent Garden Travelodge (i.e. pretty cheap and right in the West End). You might also be able to take in a movie or two at the Odeon Leicester Square which is still a film theatre... well, they screen 70mm when available and Death on the Nile is coming soon. John.

Worth the cost of a true IMAX visit but check they are running a 15/70 IMAX film print before arranging a trip. I was a little reluctant about Dr Sleep but now I've seen what you think of it, I think I'll be safe in a blind purchase. Lucy is another I really need to see and feel more comfortable on a blind purchase as per your review. I've heard mix reviews about the Goonies picture quality on 4K. You didn't seem to reflect those views so now I'm confused. I already have the lovely US WB Blu-ray box set so will only need a regular 4K if I upgrade. I think it's something to do with the Dolby Vision but I don't yet know the difference between the different HDR formats and also a lot of DNR has been applied. Did you notice that? We went to the Goonies House while in the US in 2018 but it's all borded up by the current owner having signs everywhere saying don't go up to the house. Apart from that, the house opposite that Data swings down from still looks the same. The huge ships you can see in the background of some shots looking out the window also still look the same. Great movie when seen as a kid but goofy fun as an adult. Keep up the good work mate. And yes, check out Ben Afflec in The Accountant. Trevor

I'll try another Fast & Furious film Trevor but I don't think I could bear to watch too many of them. The story of 8 is almost a complete irrelevance so I don't think it will matter which order I view them in. Many have told me 5 is the best so I'll decide when I'm next in HMV and can't find anything to buy. The Goonies doesn't look brilliant and it gives the impression that it never did on 35mm so there's nothing wrong with the latest cine transfer. If you have the Blu-ray it's not worth spending out on again. A few people have mentioned that digital noise reduction was applied to it but it's not obvious so I wonder who leaked that the mastering looked a bit of a mess so they had to try to fix it. Seems a little odd to me but what do I know. Perhaps some digital sharpening was applied but it wasn't apparent this time. Doctor Sleep is a bit harrowing but it's powerful and a compelling watch. That one is Dolby Vision so if your system defaults to Dolby Vision then I think it may well look better on your system than it did on mine because many have said it's an exceptional 4K but it isn't on my HDR video projector. I saw Iron Maiden at Reading Rock Festival in 1982. Unfortunately there were on after the Tygers of Pan Tang who were at their peak at the time and a bit of a hard act to follow. John.

"Lucy" is a guilty pleasure. It is total nonsense, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The topic of "aspect ratio" is a fascinating one, and subject to a surprising amount of controversy. @moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 3 года назад
You never know how much of the image is actually cropped in a cinema though. Look at the giant curved screens and you can always see cropped areas around the top and bottom. Not only that but it has to be cropped all around to ensure a straight edge. People get hot under the collar about it without fully understanding how film is designed to be projected. Lesser cinemas will crop anything to fit their fixed screen size but hopefully not in the UK or USA. John.

@@GA-1st It's rarely obvious. Films are often shot full frame and then cropped and masked for release. The Abyss is a good example of this as it was shot Super 35 but issued in anamorphic 35mm (and Super 8) which meant an optical process to re-format the image into the Panavision frame. It is still surprisingly good image quality despite all this but that is possibly more a testament to the quality of the fine grain film stock it was shot on. I'm sure it was always intended to be a 'Scope release so the cinematographers would have framed the image as such during filming but some used to complain years ago that they weren't seeing the whole picture. Editing is a process and there are reasons why some sequences get edited far more than others. Often it's down to the overall running time but sometimes it's just to make the film a more compelling watch and help to move the story along more quickly. I know, I know; horses for courses and all that, but I guess I'll play Scorsese here and say that it depresses me when franchises (not films mind you..) like F&F do so well; it's completely mindless entertainment and I'd have to be tied down like Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange to watch them. I tried to get through one; can't remember which, and although I have s soft spot for Michelle Rodriguez (she on the other hand has very few soft spots, it seems..) The Fast & Furious franchise is probably not your thing, but the one of the franchise to see is Fast Five, as it was the first one to stop being about racing and give a plot for the story, and it does still have some incredible stunt driving - especially one big sequence towards the end of the movie which is something to see in particular because it was a practical stunt and was quite a feat for them to manage. It does follow on directly from the 4th movie, but the opening sets up where the characters are quite well enough for you to follow going in cold.

@@moviecollector5920 the movies are actually not in chronological order, they go 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9. 3 (Tokyo Drift) was originally a spin-off with new characters, but the director (Justin Lin) did such a good job that he was allowed to come back with the original cast for 4-6 and eventually tied in a character from the 3rd movie, so it messed with the chronology a bit. The worst for my money is 2 (2 Fast 2 Furious) it tried to be too hip, though it was maybe trying to be more like the first too much, instead of doing its own thing, though it did introduce a bunch of secondary characters that came back and have been a staple of the series in the last half of it. From 4 onwards there’s a sort of loose run of them following on from one movie to the next, 5 literally starts where 4 ends, and there are story elements that lead from one into the next (for example - Jason Statham’s character is the antagonist of 7, but his character is brought in because of the events of 6, so going through them in reverse order may be detrimental as a viewing experience.

The 5th film is where the series found the identity it has now, and elements of the story flow from that film into 6, 7, 8, and now 9. It isn't essential to watch them in order but there are references you won't get otherwise, and you're missing out on the origins of certain characters like Kurt Russel and Jason Statham. Another smashing video. These reviews have quickly become a favourite part of my Saturday morning. Mirroring my comment about Back to the Future last week, The Goonies is another one of those films my sisters and I, along with everybody else, loved as children. It is a real shame you didn't get to enjoy this as a child because it is pure magic, and we only had VHS back then. I would imagine I'd not get quite as much from it as an adult. I guess we were lucky growing up in the 80s in that we did have VHS, both official releases and films we simply recorded from TV (In an act of extreme copyright infringement no doubt). It is great that all these older movies continue to get re-released. One can only imagine how much these films have grossed since they were released. That's why I don't really understand film producer's reliance on opening weekend ticket sales to judge the success. A great film will eventually get around and earn money as it does. It is a real shame when a franchise is killed off due to poor opening weekends when there is a huge fanbase who will happily pay for these films when they get around to it. I know it must be nice for a business to get a huge financial return on a film the first weekend it is released, but that is far from the end of the income stream. Does anybody else think the opening weekend figures are a poor standard by which to judge the success of a film? Many films I love didn't even get a theatrical release. Thanks as always, Lee

I prefer 'Scope films Danny but you have to remember the original anamorphic concept was to fill massive screens. There wasn't the facility in most cinemas at the time they first came about to go any higher so wider was the answer. The masking should therefore go wider to fill an even bigger screen but home video projection isn't really geared up for it and that is why you prefer the more basic format of 1.85:1. Comparison is easy to do and yes there is good releases but same amount is just not worth it. Many says example that Godzilla king of the monsters is really good 4K. I have really good TV atm with great upscaling. Difference is just minimal, even HDR should bring something. Ofcourse all 4K movies looks great, but many dont really compare it to regular blu-ray.

I don't know how wide a 76 inch telly is Raid but I estimate about five feet wide. Big for a telly but like all our home screens (with a few exception - a very few) they're tiny and that has got to be a factor in why we cannot usually discern the superior imagery that has to be there with a genuine 4K disc. HDR does mean that video is more film like though and that is what we're paying for. It does cause problems itself though and I go into that quite a bit in my next video which should be up on Friday evening if all goes to plan. RU-vid are having all sorts of issues right now so nothing is certain with regard to uploading. I do usually compare the 4K disc to the Blu-ray and quite often it can be difficult to ascertain any difference which means I have to go backwards and forwards between discs. However, I'm sure if I were to project the discs side by side I'd see the difference immediately. With regards to the Godzilla film you mention, it's a video so a lot of people find them easier to simply stick on and be amazed at the image quality. Videos that originated on film usually take a bit more effort and that's possibly where 4K falls over for most people because they never amend the HDR brightness and generally have their televisions set so bright that it's washed out. You can get away with that more with video than you can with a film transfer. Right, enough waffle for me. Thank you for taking the time to comment. John.

@@moviecollector5920 True and I diddn't ment that your reviews are wrong. :) You do awesome content! My point was that there is also a lot releases where the difference is minor.

@@Raidallinen76 I do try not to slag off a disc release unless it's truly awful (Gemini Man for instance) but most of them are of very good to exceptional quality. Some of them - if not most of them - have to have a setup tweaked in order to get the best out of them though. Close Encounters is a case in point and that's the next review. Many people probably think it's a terrible 4K release but I think it's one of the best... well, maybe not the best but it's bloody fabulous once you have your system set up to resemble film as closely as possible and that basically means getting the brightness right down. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Forgot to mention in previous comment. This channel and your knowledge considering actual filming is unreal. Its priviledge to watch theese videos, because your experince is outstanding. I was not so clear with my 1. comment. Mostly its language problem. What comes to TV settings. With Samsung "end game" QLED its always playing with Local dimming and contrast enchancer. Same settings dont work with all movies. Also atm. Local dimming is influnced by bug. Waiting new firmware. Well it can take time when it arrives to Europe.
