It's been about a decade since I took the MCAT and A LOT has changed with the MCAT since then. So why not embarrass myself and try to take the MCAT again, 10 years later!?
The MCAT and other med school board exams are full of esoteric information that you learn for the exam and then quickly forget. I think it's safe to say I forgot most of the random info that isn't pertinent to my daily practice in Radiology and Interventional Radiology.
What are my thoughts on the MCAT?
Is the MCAT a good exam?
Is the MCAT hard?
Where to find MCAT practice questions.
MCAT information
I answer all the above and much more! Hope you enjoy my ups and downs as I take the MCAT 🙃 - Michael

Yesssss!!! Looking forward to it. Dr. Webb I am a huge fan of your channel, I am a first-year D.O medical student at Rocky Vista University, hoping to do trauma surgery down the line. I watch a lot of your videos to see what the future has in store for me, for better or worse lol. I just saw your "how hard was surgery residency" video yesterday actually. Good stuff. I was wondering if you could make a video on the importance or lack thereof research while in medical school and how it could affect how you match into a competitive residency. Anyway, I hope you're having a good one!

It’s interesting how irrelevant a lot of the MCAT/premed material is to actual medicine
@eatcheesekobe
@eatcheesekobe 4 года назад
It's the foundation, and like he said once you've specialized a lot of those is just in the background and not used on a daily basis. All those MCAT information are still very relevant (minus the critical reading skills). You'll find that everything you've learned so far in school will come back in some form or another, it just depends on the particular field of medical you do. For example if you go into plastics you'll find that geometry from high school will come back to haunt you.

I took the MCAT last April and these questions seemed a lot more medical than the test that I took haha. It would be cool if you took the Kaplan half length free practice test and skipped the first 2 sections (Chem/Phys and CARS) to the Biology/Biochemistry section they have! The majority of the MCAT questions these days aren't discrete and are 3-6 questions based on a passage. In my experience, the questions were less memorization and more deductive reasoning based on the data/ info given in the passage. Great video! This is such a cool idea! *ps thanks for making these videos I am happy to say I am starting medical school this summer in Texas and you were part of my motivation during this process.
@DaKuawn

100% agree with your assessment of the MCAT. I like the fact that it is more deductive reasoning. It made the new MCAT far easier in my opinion compared to the old one.
@DaKuawn
@DaKuawn 4 года назад
@@marap4107 The great thing with the MCAT is that it is standardized. Once you learn the flow of the test and learn how the test writers test you, you can take it pretty quickly. I finished my exam about 2 and a half hours early because I knew how to only read the passages once in the CARS section and how to know if questions truly required the passage, and also if I could easily find the answer in the passages. Like the passages for the science portions in most cases aren't necessary about 60-70% of the time. In many cases I just knew the answers from pure memorization and just moved on. The other thing you have to consider is "why do they make the MCAT so long?" The MCAT was a long exam before it was passage-based (they really only added an extra 2ish hours and that's because they also tagged on 2 NEW topics - psychology and sociology. In medicine you are expected to have both mental and physical stamina to endure long days. When you commit to medical schools you will have to sign paperwork that confirms that you are physically capable of meeting the demands of medical school (with clauses sometimes explicitly stating you are able to work more than a 24 hour shift). Unfortunately, the long exams (step 1-3, sometimes intermediate exams during residency to prepare you for your boards, your board certification exam, and your relicensing exams) and long hours come with trade, my friend.
@AlexK9465
@AlexK9465 2 года назад

The questions you did on this video are know or die discrete. On the real thing, you can only expect one or two questions to be like this. Most of the emphasis is on critical thinking at this point. Knowing more about reasoning through the passages comes farther than knowing all of the science. Enjoyed the video!

I’m from a med school in QC, Canada and we didn’t have to take the MCAT to get in. We had a 2 year pre-med right out of high school where all the requirements were packed, and then they calculated our score in each class according to the groups average (easier classes putting you at a disadvantage). Then we would get a standardized interview called the MEMs or Multiple Mini Interviews which was a traumatic set of like 10 7minutes interviews/role plays. The premed and the MEMs were both worth 50% of our application process.

Here its called ENEM in the first day 90 questions ( 45 portuguese/literature) + 45 ( history, geoghaphy, sociology and philosophy) + writting a argumentative essay. In the second and last day are 45 math questions and 45 divided into Biology, Chemistry and physics. For medicine u need at least 140/180 of correct answers ... And. At leats 920/ 1000 in the essay... Thats how it is here in Brazil. People use take 3/6 years trying ... But after that u will have public, good and free education.. Also, the varsity tutors website test isn't representative of the MCAT at all. There is a lot more data analysis involved and biochemistry. Would you be interested in trying a full length exam lol? Most of the stuff on the MCAT is just random stuff you have to memorize. Most of it will not be useful for Medical School, and the MCAT barely predicts your USMLE score. At the end of the day, the MCAT is highly correlated with social class. The more money you spend the better.
@sharpasnails7601
@sharpasnails7601 4 года назад
You’d be surprised. Most of it so far has come back in so many ways that I never expected in med school. Just to give a few examples, I used to think that circuits were irrelevant for med school until we had our pulmonary and cardiovascular units. Literally the exact same formulas, just entirely different applications Henderson-Hasselbach, titration, buffers, and pretty much everything pH-related ALL comes back hardcore with acid-base renal physiology. Lots of basic things with general chemistry and organic chemistry came right back, too. So did psych... And when those subjects do come back, they come back with a vengeance, except in med school you have to add even more stuff to it in an entirely different context in significantly less time.

Only a very small portion of the MCAT is just straight up discreet questions. A large majority of the exam is based on a research passage, where you have to use the passage to answer the question. This video isn’t exactly showing the most representative stuff.

Hey Dr.Cellini, 2nd year undergrad bio student/hopeful premed, any tips that you would tell yourself back when you were in my position?

Completely useless test...as an ex Navy pilot turned MD, the MCAT has almost zero relationship to medicine... If you used useless test like this to screen potential pilots it would serve no purpose...

Is it just me or were none of those questions at all like the MCAT? Lol. Just took it for the last time in January of 2019. Finally got into medical school, so I can finally never speak of it again.

Why does the MCAT test a person on things that should be taught in med school?

Dr. Cellini, totally NOT a stab at you, but the very fact that you know hardly any of this information being challenged further emphasizes the total blatant scam of this exam and the entry process into medical school. It shows that anyone who is academically successful can be accepted even if they have little to no personal, business, empathetic, or professional ability, that they will go to be physicians. Its like 1 in 10 doctors I have ever seen are the ideal perfect doctor. The rest just make me want to vomit that I know more about biology and physiology and pharma than they do. I have two degrees, Cellular Biology and Chemistry. But your video was fun and enlightening. You seem like the person that would make a wonderful Doctor and I hope your practice sees no end to success! Just the fact that you are willing to humbly do this video and profess your ignorance to these mundane and unrelated questions to your profession shows you have the full human qualities that make the perfect doctor.

Eh, I wouldn’t go that far. Med school admissions is far more than just an MCAT score and a high GPA. There are a lot of other intricate things that are essentially required for admission. Just remember that most people who even get to the point where they can apply to med school are in that “academically successful” category. Yet, the average acceptance rate at any one US med school is around 7%. Sure, the system isn’t perfect, and I personally blame many of the systemic cultural factors that happen during/after med school for creating some apathetic doctors, but the system we do have rules a lot of people out based on those non-academic qualities you mentioned. If every academically successful person who applied to med school got in, then my class would have over 7,000 people instead of a little over 100. Plus, there’s so much that we learn in med school that once you get to residency and specialize, it’s impossible to remember all of it, since 1) not all of it is always relevant to that specialty, 2) a lot of it is just theory that we learn to understand the concepts behind how certain things work in the human body, and 3) you simply just don’t have time to go that in-depth into any one topic (like cell bio) in med school.
