Decades ago I was dangerously dehydrated and 2 different ER nurses tried (for what seemed like hours) to put in my IV with zero success. My normally great veins were in hiding. Eventually this "gnome" of an really tiny, old, nurse came shuffling into the room, grabbed my arm, and just as quick and painlessly as can be, had me hooked up in seconds. "There you go deary" and she shuffled on out. It was like magic.

Wasn’t in the ER, but some time ago I was dehydrated bad when I had my blood drawn for tests, student nurse struggled to draw. She kept missing. The senior supervising nurse showed her what to do to find the vein. Like magic. If I’m able to, I like to go donate my blood and watch the technique. Weird thing to say but I really appreciate the skill 😂

I've had a few IVs put in so o knew what to expect when I was getting prepped for my emergency cesarean. The nurse that tried to do it hurt me so bad I cried and while I was refusing to let the nurse do it again the the other nurse goes to my other side and puts it in as I am busy arguing with the other nurse and I had no idea. I figured the nurse was new or was in training but when the hospital called me to see how my stay was I complained about the nurse that hurt me. I told the women that that nurse had no business ever giving a child an IV. I told her I know what they feel like going in and that hurt me really bad and a child would be terrified to have another if they had been hurt like I was.

As a med student yes I would 100% trust a nurse over myself or my colleagues to do an iv, it’s the repartition of jobs: doctors are specialized in diagnostics and treatment while nurses are specialized on how to administer this treatment and take care of the patient. You’re a very humble person, but let’s be honest, doctors know how to put an IV. They can do central lines and lumbar puncture, gaining IV access shouldn’t challenge them too much.
@StAmander
@StAmander Год назад
@@tonic4497 Depends, like in the video many doctors have not touched a iv in years, and that's because nurses do it while doctors focus on a different aspect of medicine. It also depends on the patient, if the patient has small veins/moving veins then don't even bother, you'll turn the patient into a pin cushion because many nurses who do it far more regularly than doctors can run into trouble with it.
@Joel-wx7zk
@Joel-wx7zk Год назад
@@tonic4497 They know how to do iv's on a average person with good veins (even then they'll blow a few). But unless you do it on a regular basis, you won't be equipped to do it on your average patient with tiny fragile veins or a drug abuser with scarred veins. Only an anesthesiologist could say they have continuous experience in dealing and handling such things. Central lines are done via the larger vessels in your body, you have to be blind to somehow miss those vessels and would most likely get you kicked out of the OR. Lumbar Puncture are easier, just the positioning of the patient is most critical.

I would much rather have a nurse sink an IV in me than a doctor. My husband has a story about being in the ER with an asthma attack with bronchitis. They were trying to get in IV in but his veins kept rolling and the one that did hit a vein went all the way through. Random woman in uniform eating a sandwich was walking by the room and saw what was happening. She offered to do it. Sandwich still in one hand she puts in the IV the other hand so smoothly that he almost didn't feel it. As she taped it down one handed, he swears she had a halo. She was an in-flight paramedic.

I had to have a colonoscopy last year and it took 6 nurses and the anesthesiologist to get a singly crappy line in (almost in my armpit). Paramedics are awesome with IVs! I had a lot of trouble with tics as a kid and whenever I'd need an IV in the ER they'd have problems keeping me still. 😂😂 I was a pediatric hospital RN for years. This happened once and I about died 😂. I told the parent, “okay, I’ll go get the doctor” (brand new resident on night shift). She did NOT want to do it. I explained that I had tried to tell the parent it’s what us nurses do, and doctors, not so much, but she wanted nothing to do with my explanation. SO, the resident went in there, hands shaking as I started to walk her through it. The mom asked her why she was so shaky and she told her I’ve only ever put in a couple of IV’s. The mom then just said for me to go ahead and do it. I popped it right in there and from then on that mom just let us do our thing. People really have no idea.

In my hospital here in Australia, we have a protocol. If the nurses can't get an IV in, the doctors get to try next. It's not often utilised, but watching the docs freak out or just laugh like the doc here is golden. They'll call anaesthetics to do it instead, or they'll go get portable ultrasound gear just so they can visualise everything.

In my hospital, before the nurse anesthetist or the anesthesiologist will try, they always ask, "has the doctor tried yet?" I never understand what point they are trying to make. The ER calls my peds nurses to start an IV if they can't get one or if anesthesia fails. My peds RNs start IVs on newborns and preemies. I always have the RN hand me the phone and tell the CRNA or the MDA, "I have an essential tremor, and my nurses are so good at starting IVs that I rarely have the opportunity to try. There are two veins left that they have deliberately not touched. But, I mean... if you want the lady who only ever starts IVs in umbilical vessels and has an essential tremor to use those veins for her attempts..." They very quickly say, "ah... never mind. I'll be right up. Don't touch those veins." It's not a treat, it's an incentive...

I had been in the hospital for about 3 weeks and my veins were all but digging holes to hide in. I was going in for another procedure and the nurses couldn't find a vein. After 7 (I counted) extremely painful sticks, the doctor walked in and said to let him try. He got it first time. Yay! The nurses applauded and gave him mock bows. One even told him he was working the wrong job. I never understood what the big deal was until now.

As a nurse, I would've started laughing when the patient asked for the doctor to do it. I've only ever seen ONE doctor start an IV, and it's because he'd volunteered in very poor, developing countries for years, and was used to having little to no resources or staff. Very true about IVs. The same can be said about CPR as well. I love how all movies ask if there’s a ‘doctor on board’ to help with something or a baby, when nurses and paramedics are more likely to be able to help in a lot of circumstances. Nobody asks about paramedics either. We were going on a group trip with students and parents were asked if any that could help if needed and one I know well, an internist, raised his hand and said ‘I’m a doctor but you wouldn’t want to ask me to help”, lol. It’s true. The older generations thought of doctors as better and smarter but they’re just different roles in a healthcare team.

Should we give 100mg Lido bolus? Do you want us to shock him? The doctor's question ... "Why is this man on the floor instead of bed?" "DUH! He fell/coded leaving the bathroom." Yep, REAL smart. Why did doctors come to us to ask about diagnoses and recommendations about treatment or medications? Like was said elsewhere, Doctors have book smarts but spend maybe 10 minutes with a patient. NURSES have the hands-on experience PLUS book learning, from spending 8-16 HOURS with those patients! I spent my Independent Study Week with the IV Team. I could draw blood or start an IV 99.9% of the time with Jehovah's blessing. Better than any doctor or phlebotomist. Offered $100/IV 30 years ago by a company, which I know no doctor was ever offered. You sound like a new, young doc who thinks he knows everything, but will soon be brought to your knees by a far superior nurse. I hope that it is by an LPN and in front of everyone.

This one is so very funny because it’s so true. As a now retired hospital nurse who had those darn collapsing veins, I made it a highest priority to become very very good at starting IVs. I even had an anesthesiologist who had to stick me 10 times to get my IV started before surgery (that had not ever happened for him before)!! When I worked at a military base L&D, the corpsmen gave all the nurses nicknames. Mine was ‘one stick (my last name)’ and we had to use the huge 16gauge jelco (special needles). At my other hospital nursing jobs, I was called to start IVs all the time (even in ER, L&D, and a couple of times in the operating room (I worked as a circulating OR nurse for a short time). A couple of times where the veins just wouldn’t cooperate, the patient’s doctor tried - - uhmmm, did not get it either.

I had a similar history. When I started working I was in L&D and "taught" to 'put on a tourniquet, stick in the needle, pop on the tube & get the blood". About a year later my head nurse told me to draw blood on an old GYN patient. Every doctor and phlebotomist in the 3 units had failed. She bragged "I have a new LPN who WILL get it in one try." I popped in the needle and got blood the first try ...... THEN someone asked me how I found her vein. Deer-in-headlights "What vein? Nobody ever told me anything about veins!" lol Ten years later I got my RN and I spent my Independent Study Week with the IV Team. Continued like that for over 40 years. Spent 15 years with Critical Care and Code Teams. I simply knew where veins should be and rarely ever felt one. My preferred was a 20g Angio and yes, blood can be run through them, just a bit slower.

Eh. Years ago, while pregnant with my second child, my toddler and I both got sick/infected with what we now believe to have been cryptosporidium. (Do not recommend) We both saw our family practice doctor on a Friday, got some prescription medicine to help with symptoms (severe diarrhea) while waiting for lab results. My mother in law and sister in law took our toddler for the weekend so I could rest. Monday morning, as my husband left for work, he said I should probably call the doctors office and be seen again, … because if I was a dog … he’d have me in the clinic on IV fluids. (I’m married to a veterinarian) Our doctor was the only MD in family practice that day, but instead of sending me to hospital to have a slow IV in hospital room, he offered to run a faster drip for me in the clinic so I could get back home to my own bed. Rather than bother the nurses who were busy with other duties, Dr T started the IV himself And got it on the first try And I was quite dehydrated. In contrast, when in labor with my youngest, it was hospital policy that an IV be started before you get an epidural. That L&D nurse tried about 5 times to start that IV. I remember commenting that I felt like I was giving birth to a porcupine. About the time the second nurse was about to take over, as the first one used up all her allotted attempts… the anesthesiologist showed up. Got the IV started on his first try. Then started the epidural.

I'd be wary about a consultant trying since they rarely ever do that, but registrars are more than capable. There are also plenty of specialties (in the US) who handle very advanced lines, such as interventional radiologists, so I wouldn't be painting all doctors with the same brush.

It’s called Inadvertent Dural Puncture ("Wet Tap"). He had to explain that it could cause severe headaches and that they would need to do a blood patch (shoot blood into the tube the left there to try and clot the hole), if I started having headaches. I got really lucky though and didn’t get any headaches. Well, as lucky as I could be considering… Apparently wet taps only happen in about 1% of epidurals… my surgery was a bowel resection. During one of my GP appointments the doctor said I'd need a blood test. Imagine my surprise when she went into a draw and instead of giving me a slip to pass to the nurse she pulled out a needle and asked which arm I preferred. When I asked why she was doing it she said 'you're the last appointment of the day and I could use the refresher'. She was actually great, no bruising or anything, but the whole thing felt wrong lol.

I remember, when i was still a student nurse, and going to class full time, as well being a single dad with twins. I went a week where the only thing keeping me moving was the caffeine, and one of the doctors who i had been relatively friendly with, came over, with three senior nurses, herded me into an empty, and told me i was getting a 'coffee detox'. Once the caffeine ran out, i slept for 14 hours straight, woke up, went to the bathroom, and slept for another 5 hours. They checked me in, called my landlady to have her watch my kids. Whole deal. Then ripped me a new orifice on the dangers of caffeine. Apparently the ED doc realized i was heading for a caffeine overdose, and decided to keep me from killing myself with energy drinks and coffee.

I have had to detox myself from my caffine addiction. Caffine is a beautiful but very dangerous thing. I wasnt horrible but I was bad. Drinking a bang a day until I became genuinely addicited to it. It took me roughly 2 months of slowly easing my caffine abuse down to virtually no caffine intake. I can not drink Bangs anymore, they mess me up. My "common" energy drink I drink maybe once a week is a Mtn Dew Kickstart. If I need a heavy duty drink I go for a Monster Hydro. It feels SOOOOOO much better not being reliant on caffine anymore. I hope your detox stuck with you because it is a blessed thing to not rely on caffine.

I was so relieved you cNt imagine how bad you feel having to try to calm your baby down for that treatment. It's heartbreaking! I will never forget that Lady!!!! Nurses are Awesome but there's something about an experienced ER Nurse that just makes the experience less stressful.

I work in vet med and we even get this with people's pets! And it always seems to be when the pet is old with friable skin and veins. I've had plenty of my vets laugh when I tell them the client wants them to place the IVC, then back me up and go assure the client that no, really, they want me (the pet nurse) doing it and not them 😂

My mom worked NICU for most of her career (45 years). They called her the one stick wonder. When I had my daughter I had Pre-E and I was purple from shoulder to wrist. Thankfully it was the same hospital where she worked so they let her do it. She was the only one that was finally able to draw labs.

NICU RNs are valuable resources to nurses in other units. But since they are taking care of some of the most precious patients that other nurses may be loathe to call on them as to not interfere with their care and efforts. (A side note - God Bless you, Sandy. You were my focal point of sanity after the birth of my second child. You were strict and scary at first but then I realized that you were helping me to overcome my fears of having a child in NICU after he was born. You really were Heaven-sent.)

I have an ex who was a combat medic, and he loved begging to give me an IV. I got over my fear of needles because of him. Whenever the medics in my national guard unit want a test subject I volunteer. I tell them no hands or feet though >.< some of them medics think it's funny to try using more painful areas to practice. On a side note, I said they can do my hands or feet if I can give an NPA.

My mom used to say she had "shy" veins. If the nurse had a hard time getting a line in (or getting blood), she would ask for a paramedic/EMT to do it (if she was at the hospital). Her reasoning was that they would have experience doing that under adverse conditions. I'm sure she would never ask for the doctor to do it.

One time I was doing bedside phlebotomy on a hard stick (patient was dehydrated and a recovered IV drug user so tons of scarring), I missed and was going to go in for a second try when the doctor decided to try and show me up. Stuck the needle into her patient's arm and started DIGGING, I just cringed the entire time. He finally got 2 tubes after a few minutes of digging, pushing and squeezing and proudly sent me back to lab with thw smug-est, self satisfied grin. Was the most hemolyzed, most clotted specimen I'd ever scene.
