The racism twist isn't tacked on. It's flagged so many times, but a lot of us didn't initially see it because we had our white privilege blinkers on. Some examples: * The first time the Doctor appears in her bubble Lindy looks almost disgusted, and blocks him, but when Ruby appears she listens to her, even though she's a stranger, because Ruby is blonde and white. * There are no people of colour anywhere in the episode other than the Doctor. * Everyone is white and blue eyed and mostly blonde, with Goth Paul being I think the only non-blonde: classic Aryan stereotype. * Lindy takes a while to realise the Doctor is the same man she blocked earlier, because to her, black people apparently all look the same. * She also talks about him being duly punished for his temerity in speaking to her and her friends and says she'll look forward to that. * When she introduces the Doctor to her friends she also says "He's not as stupid as he looks". * When Ricky September and Lindy are walking together after the slug encounter, Ricky says "During the Great Abrogation, this whole city was sealed off." Abrogation is the act of canceling, nullifying, or repealing something - probably racial equality and anti-racism laws, in this instance. The whole episode is full of racist microaggressions directed towards the Doctor, but on first viewing, most white folk didn't see them until the open racism of that powerful final scene. Up until that point I read the episode as a class critique and a satire of social media dependency.

This is really good analysis, and you're right, the first time I watched it I didn't pick up on all of that. I thought she said he looked stupid because the doctor is often silly, but the Doctor had been nothing but serious the whole episode. Honestly this whole season for some reason has taken me either a second watch or taking a step back to really appreciate it for what it is. Like how the Meister felt strange in a Doctor Who episode until you realize she'll probably be a big part of the pantheon reveal later. I hate that people aren't giving this a shot, or dismissing it because it's not perfect, because it's really quite good when taken as a whole, and gets better with each episode. I hope future seasons have more episodes. The main thing holding it back is that we don't get 16+ episodes to develope the relationship between Ruby and the Doctor, and we don't have time to give the Doctor their own episode, for example. But I'm starting to have faith this season will actually be really good when we can see the whole picture.

Some of that is right but there is a mixture of blond(e) and red and dark haired white people. Only one person wears glasses and that looks like it's a fashion statement. These people know what black people look like but there aren't any black people. I think the great abrogation was more than just the revoking of anti-racism laws but planet wide ethnic cleansing. I think this goes much deeper than racism - perhaps even deeper than white supremacy. This is how I would imagine the near future would look if the Nazis had won WWII. However, I don't think this is a human colony - for one thing they don't need to pee in three days and they bleed green blood. I think these events are taking place in the very distant past (and another universe) and these people are the common ancestors of the Thals and the Kaleds and Finetime is on the planet Skaro. I think the Doctor has once again assisted in the creation of the Daleks.

More Ncuti generally would be a good thing, there've been two Doctor-lite episodes already in an 8 episode season. But he had shooting conflicts and they won't happen going forward, which is great, as he's really growing in the role. I though Lindy's initial dismissal of the Doctor was racist, then started thinking later that she was just an unpleasant rich kid who didn't like anyone she didn't know. They did a good job of concealing the racism within Finetime's general snottiness until the end there. But yes, it's all in there, and it all comes out in the rewatch.

All the signs are there that foreshadow the racism twist: 1. Lindy blocking Doc right from the start 2. Lindy only speaking to Ruby even when the Doc is in the same chat 3. being genuinely shocked that Ruby and Doc are in the same room 4. calling Doc stupid a few times (but ok, i realize the word stupid is part of daily speech) 5. saying that all people like Doc look the same (the stereotype "all black people look the same") 6. calling tardis a voodoo 7. But in the end, the inhabitants will just die, so it was all a waste of time for the doctor and Ruby. Unless the inhabitants get lucky, but...yeah, no. They're too incompetent. Also, this episode reminded me of that Capaldi episode where Clara acted like the Doctor and good people died, but the mean old man who didn't appreciate anything lived. Ricky was clearly cool and because he was educated when talking with the Doctor not backhanded comments just grateful he would have made a good companion They have no redeeming qualities at all the DOTS saw this and decided to take them out the worst possible way, They could have just killed them all like Ricky. * The reason for the Doctor light two episodes it clashed with filming Sex ED it seems insane they went ahead with production when this clash was known about and considering it was delayed already. The promotion of this episode was terrible i can see why it did badly ratings wise they needed a reaction shot of Ricky and the Doctor. Other wise people would assume its an episode all of airheads talking on screens with slugs. the final scene was the 1st day of filming hence the costume he's wearing so that entire section was the very first thing he filmed as the Doctor.

The episode is very much about portraying and critiquing a white supremacist society all along, its all there from the start and not really a "twist" as a result. The social media critique is fully intertwined with the critique of white supremacy as well and, as a result, is commenting not just broadly on the effects of social media but very specifically also on how social media plays a role in insulating white supremacy and contributing to normalizing it. The episode massively rewards a rewatch for those who realize the white supremacist critique later into the episode (for those who realize it from the outset, its maybe not as much of a rewatch discovery experience, I would guess). In this fashion it does a brilliant job of implicating the audience based on when and how they come to realize that the story isn't merely about commenting on social media but very specifically the intersection of social media and the fostering of hate-based infrastructure. And its meaningful, I think, to present this kind of critique while implicating the audience as much as possible because it serves to make the points being made resonate deeper with our actual world and the actual lives of viewers. When one realizes that the white supremacy was apparent from the start but that it wasn't being noticed because of personal privilege or bias or what have you, it prompts more personal questions about the experience of watching the narrative. At least that's my two cents from watching a variety of folks react to and commentate about the episode.

On both sides of my family my Uncles and Aunts are white supremist so they chose to home school their kids in preference over sending them to a public school where they would interact with people of color. Now my cousins are all covered in swastika tattoos at 45 degree angles. They didn't get that way without the bubble. Now that they are adults I am terrified to know how they are raising their own children. This is a systemic problem that continues to pervade our country and the human species. I could see a future where those 5 unrelated people are genetically diverse enough meet up and produce enough generations of offspring to make a place like Fine Time.

I thought Lindy was pretty much a jerk throughout the episode. Interesting use of social media as a red herring. All the microaggressions throughout the episode were a lot, leading to the ending, so I don't see how it's "tacked on." I am surprised some reactors are not seeing this at least by the end of the episode. Although you didn't like this episode, I think you might want to give it a rewatch.

As a 60-year-old man, I hope you young people realize your future is fucked. Stop living your life through your phones.

Funny. People in the Silent Generation used to tell people in the Boomer Generation similar things - stop being hippies, stop being flower children. Disco isn't as good as real rock and roll. Get off the psychedelic drugs. As if everyone was doing that, and in fact none of this may have applied to you at all. You're still young enough not to become what you probably disliked when you were age 20-30. I seriously don't think you liked it when people would make negative assumptions and negative generalizations about your generation, which was after all deeply divided. My father is Silent Generation (I'm Gen X) and he often speaks of a divide with your generation. There's no need for it.

@@billkerns9258 Older generations see the way these things are going to go and can speak out on it because they've had decades of life experience and have been through several societal changes. From the perspective of an outsider, you can clearly see how things are going, growing up in today's society is all you know. People today can't relate to each other, because when they're young their taught how to text instead of having a conversation with the person next to them. I'm reminded of a line from Star Trek in the 60's " Here you stand a perfect symbol of our technical society, mechanized, electronized but not very human. You've done away with humanity, the striving of man to achieve greatness through his own resources". I see how we've become so weak because we depend on technology. We'll order food for delivery when the restaurant is 5 blocks away. It's ridiculous.

@@SKIP-yj3xp I'm 50, I have my own life experience and plenty of it. I'm just saying that talking down to Gen Z sounds to Gen Z like it would sound to you when the Silent Generation talked down to you. I'm well aware of the stereotypes of your teens (late 1970s, early 1980s) and as you came into young adulthood in your 20s (the early to mid 1980s). For example, it''s possible you may have hated the Yuppy stereotypes and the "Me Generation" moniker. I'm also an educator, so I have a lot of contact with Gen Z and Gen Y. The challenges of today are complex and nuanced. I encourage you to keep speaking out just not in a way that seems condescending or like you are engaging in stereotypes (Gen Z will often tune you out if you do that, thus the rift between Gen Z and Boomers and the condescending, dismissive and rude in return Gan Z phrase "OK, Boomer"). You are actually not wrong about concerns you express. Every single one of the concerns is real and legitimate. But I recommend calibrating the way they are expressed so that Gen Z feel respected as well as understood. As the saying goes "it's not what you say it's how you say it."

@@billkerns9258 I like the fact that you consider their feelings, when you speak to them, but you're coddling them. You're tone policing. We both know life is hard and will get harder, but if they're not prepared for life's realities they will fail. I often wonder if they have the sense to keep a written record of their phone contacts, or will they be lost if they lose their phones.

It's funny how many people think this episode is racist. It's Doctor Who! He's come across a variety of races like Cybermen, Sontarans, Daleks, etc. Perhaps these aliens don't have non-white people? Doctor Who usually significantly tries to stop the threat, or at least fully understand it, but this bunch just says to jump into my TARDIS! Folks are putting a racist spin on it which may reflect their perception of the world and not the actual Doctor Who.

RTD himself says that is the point of the episode. There are others here who lay out every racist moment. Perhaps question why it being about race is a problem for you.
