This was the first story Matt & Karen filmed together. Crazy coz it looks like they have been doing it forever.

This is before Silence in River's timeline.

The Weeping Angels are some of my favourite Doctor Who aliens.

Amy saves herself. Brilliant. I feel River to 11 is like Jack to 10. A fun cool cameo character. Except as awesome I think Jack is, I think River is way more amazing and more important to 11. She is probably my fav person in the Whoverse.

so basically just to make the timeline a bit easier for (no spoilers don't worry), every story river is in for the most part, she's younger than the last time you saw her. so for instance in this, this takes place right before silence of the library. the easiest way to think of it is that, the older the doctor is, the younger river is :)

The whole River arc is fantastically written. I love how when they met in the library River was checking where they are at and mentioned various things. One was the crash of the Byzantium which is where they are now. Very, very well written. Also fantastic chemistry between this incarnation of the Doctor, River and Amy. I think River is going to blow your socks off over the next couple of series. No spoilers though! Looking forward to seeing your reaction to the second part. 👍🏻

Watching some of this dialogue after you know what happens gives it such an extra hit.

this is before silence of the library as that two parter the end of River's story, this is at the crash of the Byzantium something that is mentioned in the diary, as for Timeline this is the second time the Doctor meets River however from River's prospective they have meant several times before.

everything with river song is after silence in the library 2 parter, she dies at the end of that, she even said that he (the doctor) always knew how it was going to end

This episode was sick, definitely one of my favorites of this series

You definitely got me with that fake out! This was probably one of my most rewatched episodes of this season, along with the second part. Also, you might have forgotten that this *has* to come before Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead because River dies in that story. Another thing that it took me a few rewatched to notice (and I’m not sure if you did) is that during that cliffhanger moment, the thing the Doctor shoots out is the light! It’s probably one of my favourite cliffhangers, especially with that mini speech just before it. Looking forward to seeing your thoughts on the next ep, although totally understandable why you wouldn’t want to watch it right away lol!

The most pivotal two parter in Matt Smith’s entire run as the Doctor.

The opening fifteen minutes of this episode is my favourite of Doctor Who ever!!!! I can watch that sequence over and over.... BTW... If you remember back to "Silence in the Library".... River asks while going through the diary..."crash of the Byzantium. Have we done that yet?"... guess what you've just seen...

Trying to explain river timeline is so hard with out spoiling rest of the next few series (no pun intended) 😂😂. Also you’re right about that, this was before silence of library, can’t say more without spoilers. Speaking on the episode tho, it was pretty good, gives weeping angels new changes, still find them scary years later (thanks Steven Moffat)

This was the first episode Matt and Karen filmed together, before the other 3 you already watched, Timey Whimey, also it's so cool the used the phrase Hello Sweetie, when River meets 10th doctor in the library, then when 11th doctor is reading the words and says *it's old time gallifreyan* on the home box and it reads as *Hello Sweetie* we just know we're in for an appearance from River again, Great editing,.

Fun little behind-the-scenes details for this one: When The Doctor tore that piece of cloth and threw it away that was actually a goof by Matt Smith who thought he could lean on it, but it got torn instead, and they just kept filming. River's annoyed face there was Alex Kingston's genuine reaction to it. Another is that Matt actually bit Karen there to get a real reaction, even though no one told him to do that.

Apparently the idea behind the story plot was inspired by the movie Aliens. Where the original was about civilians dealing with a monster (in 'Blink' case, four) the sequel is military people having to combat the monsters in a larger quantity.

Btw, the reason that River's storyline wasn't continued earlier is that the showrunner of series 5 to 10 (Steven Moffat) was still only a guest writer in "Silence in the library". He wrote several of the really good episodes before, incl. "Blink" introducing the Weeping Angels. So kind of foreshadowing his future work. (And you got me)

This was the first episode filmed, so the fact that that fact is so hard to notice is a testament to his abilities. Also, that scene of River air corridoring into the tardis, in one of the takes she accidentally kneed Matt in the... little Matts.

well, as long as you dont watch this at night, no matter how many years go by weeping angels are scary as hell just acting like stone until its 2 late. I remember back in the day i used to look and turn away at statues just to make sure for 1 week... scary buggers

River dies in her first episode so every time she appears it’s before that episode. Yes she gets uploaded to a big old computer in silence in the library but really she’s dead I guess. I suppose. I don’t know how you’d class it.

This two parter pairs well with the Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead as my favorite.

Told you you'd like this episode, River's finally back. Also fun fact, Matt Smith actually bit Karen Gillian's hand during that scene where Amy thought her hand had turned to stone. He did it on purpose in a few takes to get a more genuine reaction out of her.

You got me!😄. As most have said river and the doctors timelines are more or less back to front (not completely, hence the diaries, so they can figure out where they are in their timelines). In forest of the dead she said to him he always knew how she died, because for him it was the first adventure. If you rewatch the library episodes it will start to make more sense.

About River and if this is before or after Silence in the Library/Forest of the dead. Remember what the doctor said I this episode "they meet in the wrong order" a better description is backwards. We see their life from the doctors poiilnt of view. So it's after the Library for the Doctor, but before the Library for River. Since they're meeting backwards you won't see a version of River after the Library, because the Doctors first time meeting her, is her last time seeing him. That's how their timeline works.

Gotta give it to Moffat, writes Blink for S3, writes Silence In The Library/Forest Of Dead & introduces River in S4, then for the first recorded story/ 1st 2 parter for his era of the show, brings both back at the same time and have it work well. Off screen the Tennant Doctor & River had more adventures, in a big finish boxset called The Tenth Doctor & River song (on sale on the Big Finish website until Sunday night, with Tennant & Kingston as Doctor and River) all set after Turn Left/The Stolen Earth/Journeys End for the Doctor (after this two parter but before Library for River). Like the offscreen adventures didnt come out until 2020 & this was 2010, but makes sense of why the Doctor is: a) more annoyed about being a taxi than trying to work out who river is + being dragged into another adventure (where hes River's companion and playing catch up). Than being as focused on who River is, as he was in Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead. b) trying to get away before he spoils something for River (which he almost immediately does by spoiling she'll become a professor, go figure) or getting spoiled by her.

Funnily, the Angels never get me, although i'm a very jumpy type. Perhaps it's because they were the only thing in the whole Whoniverse i'd known of before i started watching. So i was kinda vaccinated against them.

Different times day when watching doctor.can add too emotion, breakfast could be hard to swallow. Maybe evening better time . Brace yourself to scares more easily

Ok that fake out completely got me. This is probably one of my favourite stories from this season. Moffat when talking about this story in advance of it airing described it as "if Blink is comparable to the horror movie Alien, then this two-parter is Aliens (the more actiony military focused sequel)." As others have pointed out, this has to take place before the Library story because she dies in that one. There are however other clues: the Doctor mistakenly refers to River as Professor because that was her title in the library story but at this point she's only a Doctor. River references this story in the library story by asking "have we had the Crash of the Byzantium?" which is the name of the ship in this story.

the next episode is a lot better, less scary & more doctor who science fiction stuff
