The fixed point in time was River shooting the Tessalecta, all along. Time fucked up because that exact thing didn't happen, not because the Doctor survived. It's just that everyone THOUGHT it was River shooting the actual Doctor and killing him. Time itself wasn't "fooled" in any way, it always "knew" that was going to happen, but everyone else in the universe was fooled about what the fixed point actually was. Also, the "Doctor" we saw in this episode was actually the Tessalecta at every point after the intro sequence - so time started moving again when River touched the *Tessalecta*, not the actual Doctor.
@TheMoonRover
@TheMoonRover 5 лет назад
Yeah, it's about River shooting "the Doctor" not the Doctor dying.
@AndrewEmmett
@AndrewEmmett 5 лет назад
I would go further to say that a Fixed Point is a point in time that has been physically observed by a time traveller, or perhaps even a crossing of a time travellers own timeline. However the specifics of the event may not be clear as in this example, so fixed points are open to manipulation if handled carefully. The Fires of Pompeii is a good example.
@anonymes2884
@anonymes2884 5 лет назад
@@AndrewEmmett I see it more like a point for which it _doesn't matter_ if a time-traveller observes it or if/how they're involved, it has happened and it always will. Fixed points can't be manipulated but it's possible to realise they were never _actually_ what you thought they were, your information about them can change but the point itself can't. Like Wilf's four knocks for instance - for as long as there's been spacetime, that event has been there, waiting to happen to 10 (as he says "Because that's who you are, Wilfred. You were always this. Waiting for me all this time.") or Pompeii, where the event was always fixed, it's just that it turned out it was _also_ always instigated by the Doctor.
@Helbore
@Helbore 5 лет назад
Yep, this. Still surprised that some people don't get how the fixed point works. There's never any change - just read up on the bootstrap paradox. The whole story is a predestination paradox and quite frankly, if you don't like that, then stop watching a show about time travel!
@anonymes2884
@anonymes2884 5 лет назад
@@Helbore Indeed. Sometimes I think most of Moffat's era can be traced back to someone telling him "All You Zombies" was the ultimate predestination paradox story and him going "Hold my beer" ;). (he also seems to have read up on some actual physics though likely just at the pop-sci level - a lot of his ideas and even dialogue calls to mind the "block universe" concept from special relativity for instance)

@anonymes2884 5 лет назад
Exactly. The Doctor _appears_ to die and importantly is _witnessed_ appearing to die (so River can be jailed for his murder and so gets the invitation, goes to Lake Silencio etc.). But the Doctor _actually_ dying was never a requirement of the fixed point.

@craigtcaster
@craigtcaster 5 лет назад
Nicholas Courtney was the actor who played the Brig. He's the only actor to have appeared in the original series with ALL seven of the first Doctors. He played a different character with William Hartnell (1), in The Daleks Master Plan. Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart was introduced in two stories from Patrick Troughton's (2) time. When Jon Pertwee (3) took over, he was exiled to Earth, so worked with the Brig and Unit on a regular basis, which spilled over into Tom Baker's (4) era. He made a couple of appearances with Peter Davison (5). He didn't actually appear during Colin Bakers (6) regular years, but did appear with him in one scene from the 30th Anniversary short called Dimensions In Time, which most people would rather forget. His last on screen appearance in Doctor Who was with Sylvester McCoy (7). The actor did make several shows for Big Finish audio, including working with Paul McGann (8). Finally, he also made an on screen appearance with Elizabeth Sladen in the Sarah Jane Adventures. Sadly they both died within a couple of months of each other.

Fixed point: if River do not shoot the Doctor, she is not sent to prison for killing the Doctor. Then, all the adventures (episode) she had where she started in the prison could not have happened. Thus, making this a fixed point. River even left the prison to go to Lake SIlencio in the first episode of this season. If she do not kill the Doctor, she is NOT in prison, she can't receive the letter, thus she can't go to lake silencio, thus time is broken, etc...

Yes, so that's why when Amy early this season wanted to kill the person/young River in the astronaut suit and she told River, she said, it was a fixed point, she wasn't afraid of him dying, because this is future River, she knows he doesn't actually die. She knows she can't change what happened.

I don't think most people had a problem with the episode as a whole but just that a lot of people didn't fully understand how the Doctor survived a fix point and to be fair it not a easy ending to follow, you really have to pay attention and think about it. you know a show that treats it audience like there smart can sometimes get a little overcomplicated for the casual viewer who just wants to sit and enjoy without having to think too hard on any point in the show. I also like this finale.
@jamesg6660
@jamesg6660 5 лет назад
The main problem with Moffat's plots is that they are not suitable for a show like Doctor Who, which has always been primarily focused on being a Saturday night sci-fi romp for families. Unless you're sitting down every single week and intensely concentrating, you're gonna be shit outta luck. It began appealing more to the hardcore fanbase that had begun to spring up around that time. That's why the ratings tanked. I know that personally, my family stopped watching because it was no longer suited for the "vaguely concentrating on a lazy weekend around the TV" situation. Which, no matter what you have to say, has always been Doctor Who's strongest audience, and is what the show has primarily focused on targeting until Moffart came along. Basically, as has been said. Moffart panders to pseudo-intellectuals. The show has always survived by playing off of the fact that that _isn't_ the type of show Doctor Who is.

So even though she had already been programmed to kill the doctor at this exact point, in this exact way, when amy shot young river in the spacesuit this caused a change in course but not in destination. Later allowing newly regenerated river to see the doctor as a good man and the doctor to discover the time, date, location and cause of his death. Rivers attempt to spare him broke time because she had already watched him die and burned his body, so preventing that caused a paradox, resulting in time collapsing in on itself. But with the doctor's plan the event still happens, the astronaut shoots the "doctor", the companions witness it and they burn the body. Fixed points often don't care about how or why, just what and when. Though i suppose the simplest answer would just be, "Timey Wimey"

Fun fact, River's Vortex Manipulator, which we saw her get in the first part of the season 5 finally from Dorian, is actually the same one Jack had, supposedly. I've also heard the squareness gun she had in the Library back with Tennant was also once Jack's. River is my all time favourite character. Alex played her so well, and I loved this season so much, partially because of that. I can't wait for you to see what else they do with her, cause there are some great moments still to come. Not telling though, spoilers, of course!

Oh and Brigadier was also with the third Doctor who got stuck on Earth, and also appeared with four and five. Not sure about after that, how often, if at all, he appeared. But I know he was predominantly with Three cause Three got stuck on Earth and it was a UNIT heavy run with Three.

How this works was that in episode 1, the doctor was inside the Tesselecta controlling it. He walked to where river would shoot it. She drained the weapon power supply. This crazy time thing happened. Those events play out as in episode 13 and river realizes she isn't killing the doctor, agrees to shoot and the rest continues. It isn't seen in episode 1 by the doctor's friends because they see the continuous time stream as they are merely spectators to the situation and not participants. The amy and river and Rory in the 'aborted timeline' that actually happened all along are the ones from after everything that happened, as Amy remembers the death and the stuff from this timeline as it happened, while its happening without having happened. The doctor escapes the Tesselecta while it's burning and ties up some loose ends, then continuing on his journey.

By creating a fixed point, you create an infinite number of alternate timelines that ultimately destroy themselves. The timeline where River took control and did not kill the Doctor was one of those timelines, along with all the other possible timelines, and therefore the only timeline left afterwards is the one where the Doctor is seemingly killed. That is how you know it is a fixed point in time.

There are probably future doctor events that take place in the past, due to time travel, and so it was always going to work out this way ultimately. Imagine a roller-coaster, or sonic, going through a spiral before continuing forward, in a way. So the universes paradox for linear time is like a dance going through its complete play-through in order to keep going forward. So it's not that they created them, but that the universe had to find a needle to thread in order to keep its own continuity, from its own linear perspective. Imo.

This was a fun finale. I loved how creative they got with the idea of "what would happen if time broke?". Granted the payoff for what was setup here was, in my opinion, anti-climactic and I wish they'd finished "The Question" arc berore Amy and Rory left the show. Still, standing on it's own merits, it was a fun time and I loved how simple yet unexpected the solution was.

The fix point in time was the robot Doctor getting shot. River was just preventing that fixed point in time to happen, until she understood the Doctor had swapped bodies with the robot Doctor. Remember, the show did establish the robot could replace people during fixed points in time.

from what i understand fixed point is cosmic rules and is solution of time to prevent the logic contradictory with itself when high latitude creatures intervene like doctor and river. it's like bug Prof system of cosmic. And making fixed point is following the rule.

A fixed point, once created, affects everything throughout time. There can be no fixed point until the action initially happens. Once it happens it can’t be undone without drastic consequences.

I always figured that the reason the Church of the Silence made River into a Time Lord assassin was because you need a Time Lord to make a fixed point. I don't know how or why, wibbly wobbly timey wimey and all that, but I figure that since the Time Lord travel in time so much, and you pick up all that special background radiation, it probably makes their actions more important, more ingrained the the timestream.

That's my theory as well. In Forest of the Dead 10 says there's only one reason he would ever tell anyone his name, only one time he could. I used to think it would be for a wedding proposal, but now I think it's in the event of his permanent death. In Lets Kill Hitler he thought he was dying for good, but he also had to try and protect her timeline because he knew that she knows his name in her future. Even in the face of his permanent death his last act was to help her.
