weirdly, both Tennant and Smith won me over in their very first episodes, Capaldi took a whole season, but mostly due to how his Doctor was written in Season 8. Whittaker i don't like very much, and Ncuti has plenty of charisma but again the writing is not that good in the new season.

@@colemacgrath2005 more or less the same for me, but it took a while to warm up to Smith. Now he's tied favourite with Tennant. Ncuti has been great and had some great moments, but there are also things I don't like that much. For example, how he seems to exit the Tardis in every episode with a big laugh and overexcitement in pretty much the same way every time. It's literally just a housing estate in South London and the guys that lived there didn't really understand my excitement, but that estate brought me such nostalgia. Regeneration is a semi-random but inherently unstable process, and The Doctor often experiences some "regeneration sickness" afterwards, with varying symptoms! To answer your question of how Mickey has access to U.N.I.T.'s spaceship-tracking system, in the first Slitheen story last season The Doctor gave him a password "Buffalo" that bypasses basically every bit of U.N.I.T.'s security, which is how he could launch a missile in that episode! Also, a Satsuma is very much a small orange! Well done for catching the Arthur Dent reference!

The way I see it is they’ve all got the same memories making up the same person, but different memories (usually the ones around the circumstances of the last regeneration, though that’s just fan speculation) carry different levels of importance. The Ninth Doctor was marked by the pain of ending the Time War. The Tenth Doctor still has that (battling a Dalek fleet put him right back in those feelings) but also has the knowledge that he doesn’t have to face that pain alone because of course that’s what Rose becoming the Bad Wolf meant to him in that moment.

It’s not just memories. He is always the same being. But there can be personality changes when regeneration occurs. Yet he’s always the same being, with the same soul if you will. This change is a normal part of what time lords do. Other time lords would always consider the person the same being after a regeneration. For us it can be difficult because humans don’t do this.
@CrankyGrandma
@CrankyGrandma 22 дня назад
I’ll also add some time lords can control the regeneration process well, some can’t. In rare cases it can be fatal. The doctor has no (conscious) control of his regenerations. It does seem to me, though, that easy regeneration is affected by his life before the regen. Hence this doctor has Rose’s accent and seems more youthful and just a bit more like Rose. Fun facts. I grew up with the original series (although I was very young when it started - lots of hiding behind the sofa!). I watched the new (Christopher Eccleston) series, and my (then) young sons really got into it (it was good). Just after the last episode a film crew turned up at the caves 200m from our house. Turns out it was the Dr Who crew filming this Christmas episode, the caves being the inside of the Sycorax spaceship. My sons visited a few times, and on the Saturday I took them up to see what was happening. The crew were using a double decker bus as a canteen (downstairs kitchen, upstairs seating). Just then Sean Gilder, who played the Sycorax leader, came out eating a pudding (desert) whilst in full prosthetics! He just said "well that spoils the surprise". Being British however we just chatted for a bit, but did not take any photos. My sons did get a picture with some of the extras, who had costumes but no prosthetics (we of course asked them first). The Dr Who crew have been back to the caves a few times, as well as a woodland maze site less than 1 mile from our house (a lot of film crews have been there, including Star Wars!).

The "Don't You Think She Looks Tired?" moment is not just powerful in and of itself, but calls to mind a classic Doctor Who villain, The Master. One of the most reoccurring villains, he had some hypnotic powers that were not 100% perfect, but still made him deadly. He often used his charm and skill at manipulation to make weaker willed and even good people carry out his evil plans for him, and the 10th Doctors deposing of Harriet Jones in that way is highly reminiscent of something The Master would do. Also, when Liz Truss resigned after her short and disastrous reign as the UK Prime Minister, there were a LOT of "Don't You Think She Looks Tired?" memes going around.

The point of the Doctor's "Dont you think she looks tired?" Sets off a political thing that Brittain has to get rid of politicians called a "Vote of No Confidence". Harriet complains about it on the TV at the end of the episode. It is a process that people can vote to oust a politician if they are not representing the will of the people. We don't have it in the US, and our system is MUCH harder to remove a politician.

Why do I have in my head that it's not always random? Like, if it's a surprise like being killed quickly then sure it's a lottery but I thought the Time Lords could decide things? @@LukaWukaWatcher The common fannish assumption is that while some Time Lords can indeed control their regeneration enough to choose a look (and personality?) they're happy with - as we see on at least one occasion - others (like the Doctor) just don't have the knack. That said, I think the Doctor does *subconsciously* shape his own persona to some degree. Whatever he doesn't like about himself, towards the end of one life, gets pushed out in the next, and some trait that he wishes he'd had more of comes to the fore... though not always in the way he would have hoped. (Example: Five wishes he'd been better at asserting himself; The regeneration overcompensates, and so out pops the bombastic 6th Doctor, who takes a while to get a grip on all that newfound aggressive energy.)
@falxonPSN
@falxonPSN 22 дня назад
@@LukaWukaWatcher There is an upcoming episode that shows the regeneration that was during the Time War, and there it is stated unequivocally that regeneration can be guided and influenced VERY specifically if desired by the Time Lord in question. A few seasons later from where she is, they actually reference that explicitly. Basically, most choose not to do so as they are tired of their previous "life" and want a change. Don't forget that regeneration is a traumatic experience for them, so I could see the reset to a new personality being a way to avoid some of that pain.

I mentioned on your Parting of Ways episode, I'm right there with you! I started watching with Eccleston, and was absolutely heartbroken when he changed to David Tennant. BUT, after watching this episode, I was very quickly won over. Between his "I DONT KNOW!!", and "This is a fightin' hand!", I very quickly accepted he could be a lot of fun. And as much as I'll always enjoy the time with Eccleston, there's AMAZING moments with Tennant. For funsies, I did go back and watch some of the classic Who episodes, and every incarnation brings something different to the character. I haven't watched ALL of the Classic Who, but I watched a lot of the first Doctor (William Hartnell), and the fourth (Tom Baker), and some of the different regenerations. With the third Doctor, I thought he was very stiff and hard edged, but as soon as Tom Baker took over, he had so much fun with it, and it showed! Obviously there's a LOT to watch, but it's interesting to see what everyone brings to the role. If you get a chance, look for some snippets to get an idea.

A few things to note on Time Lord Regeneration: The Doctor's regenerations are always involuntary, and they have no conscious control over the final appearance. It's very much a lottery. Furthermore, regeneration is a very "dodgy" and dangerous process. It can often fail, resulting in the newly regenerated timelord going through a period of physical and psychological instability and can include symptoms such as paranoia, hyperactivity, amnesia and exhaustion. The Fourth Doctor described it as "a new body is like a new house - takes a little bit of time to settle in". Hopefully this explains why the Doc is out for the count for a large part of this episode.

Little piece of supposed trivia: He was starring in a live remake of the Quatermass Experiment when he found out that he was going to be the next Doctor. Nah. It's just weaponised psychology; the power of suggestion and rumour. That moment will play on Harriet's mind; we see immediately that her alarm about it shakes her previous calm resolve; the young guy meanwhile won't be able to forget that moment whenever he's recounting what happened, and anyone who hears it will start to notice every moment when Harriet's not looking perfectly fresh and confident; Harriet notices - or perhaps just imagines - that people are looking at her differently, perhaps less trustingly, than before... This was actually my first episode of the revived series, because we didn't have a TV in 2005 but we were staying at my father-in-law's house for Christmas, and he did. Watching my children watching it reminded me what the show was all about, and rekindled my old love for it (I first started watching in 1967) - we made sure we got a TV before the start of series 2, and also bought the DVD of series 1. I love how Jackie is, quietly, the most important human here. She provides both the tea that wakes the Doctor, and the dressing gown with Howard's satsuma that defeats the Sycorax. Meanwhile, Harriet is kind of in the role of our only female PM (as of the broadcast date), Margaret Thatcher, at the time of the sinking of the Argentinian naval vessel _General_ _Belgrano._ The ship was outside the exclusion zone (and originally thought to have been moving away), but was still a possible danger to British lives; some consider it an appropriate attack, others do not.
