If you plan on starting to watch Doctor Who, start with Christopher Eccleston, a.k.a the 9th Doctor. There are more and older versions; the show actually started in 1963. But while the stories are good, the fx are very dated, even for the day.

They were pioneers of special effects but on a very low budget. In fact, Star Trek The Original Series' sfx people got in touch with Dr. Who sfx people to ask them how they did certain things and they shared their knowledge with one another because both series were on television at the same time, but Dr. Who didn't come to the United States until later.

It's an in joke by now, even within the BBC. One of my favorite old "Who's Line is it Anyway?" jokes during the props segment was one person holding up a two foot long piece of spiky plastic and saying "look, I know we're strapped for cash but there's no way I can get 14 Doctor Who monsters out of this by Tuesday."

The two scenes edited together discussing the meaning of "Doctor" as a warrior were from the same story, and that connection was intentional. That's a good example of the type of mind-bending time-travel concepts the writer Steven Moffat is known for in Doctor Who. He was the show-runner for the seasons starring Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, and wrote some episodes before that. There's an often quoted scene from the episode "Blink" where the Doctor describes time as "a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey... stuff." That was Steven Moffat. Whenever the show gets into weird, time-paradox type stuff, you'll see a lot of fans describe it as "timey wimey."

David Tennant is the best. TARDIS (time and relative dimensions in space) it's his police box time machine. It began in 1963. When the Dr gets fatally injured he regenerates and a new actor takes over. The Dr is a Time Lord, he has two hearts. His pain is that all of his companions and friends die, he continues on, he is hundreds of years old. Dr Who has many aliens in the series. The series is not all doom and gloom, far from it.

The show started back in 1963, so please do not forget to watch classic who is well. Doctors 1-8 are just as important as the doctors in the reboot. If it wasn't for them, you wouldn't have the reboot to watch. In fact, Tom Baker, who played the 4th doctor, my favorite doctor, just celebrated his 90th birthday.

Something you might also find interesting if you have ever watched Star Trek's Strange New Worlds? The girl who says "then why is he called the Doctor?" is Christina Chong who plays La'an Noonien Signh in that series. The Doctor is from Gallifrey and a Time Lord, his species regenerates when fatally wounded so that's why you have different actors here....the video you watched only went up to the 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi....after him there was Jodi Whittaker as the 13th, David Tennant was in the 60th anniversary special just this past November as the 14th and now there is the 15th Ncuti Gatwa. Make sure you review these Doctors too!

All of the clips that you included were shot during the modern era of Who. So far there is two established Who eras and a third era that is just starting. Pretty good. That time in the saga was the best. The classic era is a lot of fun in a different way, but the first four Doctors of the revival were great. Eccleston, Tennant, Smith, Capaldi. I usually recommend newcomers start with season 5, the beginning to the Matt Smith era. If you like the zaniness then you'll probably appreciate the rest of the show.

One thing the show has largely done well is giving the Doctor that edge. He's largely a pretty goofy, light character, but there's always that undertone of menace and hurt and desperation, and they do a really good job of knowing when to unleash it.

This is a fantastic show and I absolutely recommend you commit to watching it. Long, but so worth it. Each iteration of the Doctor, a character who’s face changes with each couple seasons is just.. each actor brings something amazing and adds to how iconic he has become. I’ll admit I haven’t quite finished the last two seasons, but everything that I have seen made it one of the most impactful and most entertaining sci-fi fantasy show I’ve ever watched. It’s an instant classic by the end of the second season and by the third you’ll be buying your own sonic screwdriver off a little known merch site and pretending to be a Dalek in the shower I swear. 😂

Doctor Who is a very very old show going back many many years but it got a rebirth in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston playing the 9th doctor, as you do not know the doctor is a time lord and his race has a trick to cheat death and every time he dies he regenerates as a new person and for the show this means a new actor , it actually works well as we crow to love each doctor and then morn as they pass only to get a new one, the early season from 2005 are dated in both story and cgi but no less fun to watch

There are two eras of the Dr Who show. The Classic era 1963 -1989, and the rebooted series that started from 2005 until present. You are watching clips from the reboot series, but mostly the dreamtc scenes. There is a lot of humour in the show as well. The classic series had a much lower budget than the reboot, so effects look a bit ...er quaint (cheap).

My Advice is to watch the Following. William Hartnell: The Daleks (Original Black and White), Tenth Planet. Patrick Troughton: The Tombs of the Cybermen, The Enemy of the World, Power of the Daleks, Evil of the Daleks. John Pertwee: Spearhead from Space, the Ambassadors of Death, Inferno, Terror of the Autons, The Claws of Axos, Day of the Daleks-Special Edition, The Sea Devils. Tom Baker: Robot, Genesis of the Daleks, The Pyramid of Mars, Deadly Assassin, the Sun Makers, The Talons of Weng Chiang, City of Death, Logopolis. Peter Davidson: Earthshock, Resurrection of the Daleks, The Caves of Androzani. Colin Baker: Vengeance on Varos, Attack of the Cybermen, Revelation of the Daleks. Sylvester McCoy: Remembrance of the Daleks, the Curse of Fenric, Battlefield, Survival. Honest, although Nu-Who (post 2005) has Vastly better SFX, Classic Who (1963-1989)absolutely *annihilates* it in Terms of Writing! If you choose to only ever watch one Story however, then watch the very best one. Genesis of the Daleks! Hope that Helps!

You’re entitled to your opinion, but I think it’s a minority opinion. I started watching Doctor Who in 1964, so I lived through Old Who, and there are some episodes of it that I still like to look back on now and then. But it’s not for newcomers to the show in 2024. It looks primitive, and I don’t agree that the writing was better. The 20th century Doctors are worth seeing sometime, but people can catch up with them later, not as a first experience of the show.
@simeonyves5940
@simeonyves5940 8 месяцев назад
@@jonathan.palfrey I accept that I am probably "last of the time lords" on that view, Yes. One of the Original fans? Then I defer to your judgement Sir, as you are far older than I. I was introduced at age 3 just after the Cancellation by Re-runs of some of the old Pertwee and Baker (Tom) Serials. Think Planet of the Daleks (so with Episode 3 still in B/W) was my first, and I got hooked immediately! So I defer to your Judgement, where as I would Immediately point to either Genesis or Remembrance for a strong first start, where would you point to? I assume, perhaps incorrectly, with "Rose" ?
@jonathan.palfrey
@jonathan.palfrey 8 месяцев назад
@@simeonyves5940 You don’t need to defer to my judgment. All judgments are subjective, and mine is no better than yours in any absolute sense. It’s interesting that you’re so keen on Old Who, and I’m sure you’re not the only one; though I suspect (without proof) that you’re relatively unusual. “Genesis of the Daleks” seems to be well thought of generally; I saw it when it was first broadcast in 1975. But when I saw it again in 2018, I was disappointed: the story seemed crude, clunky, and not entertaining, although there were some decent performances in it. Old-Who stories that I’ve rewatched and quite liked in the 21st century include “Spearhead from Space”, “Carnival of Monsters”, “The Time Warrior”, “Robot”, “City of Death”, “The Five Doctors”, “The Two Doctors”. (And my sister appeared as Janet in “Terror of the Vervoids”, so I rewatched that one.) I suppose “Rose” is the obvious place to start watching New Who, and it’s quite good overall, although it has some embarrassing moments. “The Eleventh Hour” makes a rather better start to the Moffat era. For me, Steven Moffat was the best writer in the history of the show (although he was somewhat less good as a showrunner); one way to start someone off with Doctor Who would be with Moffat’s stories before he became showrunner: “The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances”, “The Girl in the Fireplace”, “Blink”, “Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead”.
@simeonyves5940
@simeonyves5940 8 месяцев назад
@@jonathan.palfrey Fair Enough, and thank you for the Kind Words. I think it is because I was Raised on Old Who during the Period between the Second Cancellation (1989) and the Revival Attempts (first that woeful movie in 1996, although, thankfully, Big Finish used it to give us some Exceptional Audio Drama's with the 8th Doctor, including the Nightmare Rocket Fuel that is Terror Firma.., and then the Successful Revival in 2005) so Old Who is a massive Part of my Childhood. I openly admit to being a very Unusual and Peculiar Person even by the Standards of the Who Fanbase! Fair Enough, Personally I think Genesis of the Daleks is the Greatest Doctor Who Story ever Filmed, but, we all have our own Tastes. All Absolute Classics those :) Good Choices. Spearhead from Space being one of the very best Stories IMO! Still pretty Scary even now in Places despite the low Budget! A Personal Connection? gosh! I guess that must make "Terror of the Vervoids" quite a Special Episode for you. Been a while since I last watched the Trial of a Timelord actually! Yes, the "Belching Dustbin" is rather cringe inducing... Rose does have its issues for certain. Now, Personally, I would give the Gong for Greatest Doctor Who Writer to Robert Holmes ("Talons of Weng Chiang.." and "Caves of Androzani", among many other stone cold classics!), still, Horses for Courses I guess. but then, I also rather enjoy Eric Saward's rather Darker, somewhat Nihilistic, grittier and more Violent take on Who (Earthshock, Resurrection, Revelation, Varos, Attack, etc) in the 1980's, so, what do I know? I will admit, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead was a Superb Story, Properly Scary, Well Written, Atmospheric, and even saved a Beautiful old Building from Destruction in Real Life! Moffat was a poor show runner (although I cannot help but feel RTD was still running the Show as the "Supreme Dalek" with Moffat as just "the Controller" taking his orders, If I am honest) but was a Great Writer, I give him that. So some good Stories there! Nice to talk with one of the Original Fanbase going right back to Hartnell! Peace :)

Now, Matt's challenge to the 'god planet' in Rings of Akhaten is sometimes called a speech but it's not really, it's a scream of defiance in the face of overwhelming power. It really was a great edit because it wasn’t too spoilery and yet covered quite a few key stories. Perhaps the best thing unremarked on is the fabulous music by Murray Gold. There is so much more great music in the series.

That was an interesting video to react to. It originally ran from 1963 to 1989. There was a movie in 1996 then it was revived in 2005 and has been running ever since. So in one way or another it's been in the air since 1963. I've been watching it since the 1980s when the 4th doctor was on TV. It's totally about a time traveling alien who usually travels with a companion or more. It's been the same doctor for the 60 years just different actors when the previous one decides to leave the show. That's the brilliance of show... regenerations. I'd recommended Tubi for classic episodes or if you can afford it, HBO MAX that also has the entire classic run minus the missing episodes from the first and second doctor's episodes. Sorry for the long comments but I get passionate about it since I've loved it for so long. 😊

I also started by watching the Tom Baker episodes on PBS in the eighties, which was probably true for most Americans. Hearing the name "Doctor Who" usually evokes the image of a man with longish brown curls, the fedora, and the too-long striped scarf on this side of the Atlantic.

8:09 "Based on the clips, it seems like this show elapsed over a long period of time" You're absolutely correct! The clips from this video are all from the 2005 reboot and onward, but the original show that reboot is a continuation of just had it's **60th** anniversary! If you do want to start watching Doctor Who, I'd personally recommend starting from the 2005 reboot with Christopher Eccleston, it has just the right amount of mystery and explanation to drag you in, without needing the knowledge of "Classic Who". If you need a brief concept for the show, it's about an alien with a blue box that can travel anywhere in time and space, usually with companions, and fits firmly in the sci-fi genre.
@Birdboy029
@Birdboy029 8 месяцев назад
On first watch, I felt that during series 1 (season 1) from 2005 the producers didn't know who its audience was. There was stuff that appealed solely to elementary age kids, like certain alien villains, and there was also risqué humor, and the mix felt weird to me. BUT I stuck to it and the show grew on me. Later, I came to understand that it was an intentional decision to make the show for all age brackets and focus in on specific segments of the audience from time to time. So if you ever feel like you're outside the show's target audience in one moment, the next scene or next episode will change your mind.
@garyperkins3304
@garyperkins3304 8 месяцев назад
The show was originally designed for kids and young teens, but obviously appealed to all ages, and the show adapted to that over time. The BBC periodically gets complaints if the aliens are too intense, so the show tends to be a bit whimsy now and then. It has its own charm that way, and I like that the show doesn't take itself too seriously and can remain a bit low budget compared to other shows. Can you believe it was pitched to the BBC as an educational program in the beginning? Somehow they forgot that along the way. Bless those early writers, lol.

@@garyperkins3304the ones set in the past have their educational moments, more so in classic Who, wherein, IIRC, a number of the serials just had the Doctor and companion(s) caught up in historical events without there being some alien trying to mess with history. It’s probably incredibly confusing to try to understand the show watching only a single “fan-nostalgia-porn” compilation like this one. I’d suggest starting with one of the entry point episodes of the new era, such as Rose from 2005 with Christopher Eccleston, the first Matt Smith episode, or possibly the new season starting with Ncuti Gatwa. It’s the longest running SciFi franchise celebrating its 60th year and the Doctor has lived thousands of years with over a dozen faces so it has a huge depth that could be imposing but that depth is worth it and incredibly satisfying.

The video you watched is really just one aspect of the show.. pulling on the dramatic... The show can also be very funny, odd and unusual. You need to keep in mind a few things though.. The Show is a "Family" show... which is not very common... it's not just for kids, it's not just for adults... it was designed that the whole family would sit down and watch together. That doesn't mean it pulls it's punches.. .just don't expect to much overt sex or blood and gore.... The show's style is episodic... Each episode (or in some instances two) are effectively stand alone stories. While there are arcs... each episode can usually be viewed on it's own without too much knowledge of other events. This means that episodes can have a huge variance of style and theme... some episodes are light adventure, some are horror, some are borderline comedy. Given the length of the show, and the rotating creatives behind the show, various eras of the show have distinct feels... Each 2005-2008 there was a real family feel... a little later, and it was almost a fairy tale feel... So if you're not enjoying a specific era... just hang in there, cause it will change again... If you're a career "reactor", this show has a LOT for you to use....

I've loved all the emotionally charged stories of recent years, because a character with so much history and so much baggage, would not be just cheerful and happy all the time. That's one thing I worry about now that Disney are holding the pursestrings that the character will just become a hero lightly skipping his way through the universe. Yes, there are many years here. The seasons these clips come from range from 2004 to 2017. However, there were many years before then in the classic era that started in 1963. NuWho is very different from Classic Who.

@@TheZWVNetwork Where are you starting, back in the 60's ?, There are some MISSING episodes of Dr Who that people are madly searching for in some dark basement somewhere, because the BBC after a set period, would wipe the master tapes for reuse. They recently found a few episodes in an archive of an old TV station in South Africa for example. Much like in Australia, a Music Video show called "Countdown" made by the ABC, was a popular feature on Cable TV channel TV1 where they would show snippets in between programming. TV1 went to Purchase the remainder of the archives of Countdown, only for the ABC to say "Whoops, Sorry, We recorded over them". This video ONLY touches on the reboot series, starting in 2005 There was a LOT more to it. Doctor Who was once a fantastic, "magical" (it is sci fi after all), heartfelt show that has captured the hearts and imaginations of the whole world for 60 years. It's wonderful that you're wanting to take the first steps into this world but... You're going to want to stop after Peter Capaldi's Doctor. With the exception of the last 3 specials that came out back in December (and even those were a VERY mixed bag), Doctor Who is less than a shadow of itself ever since Jody Whittaker became the Doctor and Chris Chibnall took over duties as showrunner. When that happened, it was the beginning of the end in terms of creative storytelling and compelling characters. Please, do watch Doctor Who starting with Christopher Eccleston when the show was revived back in the early 200's, or even before if you want to watch Classic Who, but don't fall victim to the travesty that became the Doctor in recent years and just stop after Peter Capaldi's run.
