I think you are right to a degree. And on seeing one part of a Whitaker episode I did not think it would be possible to be any worse! But it looks like its going to be. The pure hype at the time for this "Fugitive Doctor" being so great was crazy. All I saw was another bland soap opera / Casualty style actress giving a poor impression of what she thought the Doctor was. Jo Martin was not some amazing and skilled performance. It simply looked better than the rest because everything else was so terminally awful. But only slightly, it was like clutching straws. Its the blinkered stupidity and refusal to accept the truth that the show is dreadful, by some sections of fandom that baffles me. They are either very stupid, or have not seen anything else better, which is hard to believe. Or dedicated to a fault, which is also possible. But why pretend something is great when its not? Simply for brownie points? Or because they dont want to say anything is bad? These are the sort of people that say green is blue, white is black and that would insist the sun is shining at midnight. Deluded.

I think this has yet to run its course but the last few years will eventually come to be viewed as an aberration. The fault of the scripts rather than the actors.

@@YM-rm7mh Just compare like with like. Lie of the Land was put up against Britain's Got Talent, just like Legend of the Sea Devils got put up against Britain's Got Talent. Both times BGT was the most watched programme of the day. In 2017 BGT got 8M viewing figures, while in 2022 it got 5M - this means millions of Brits have stopped watching TV in general. 5-6M is the 2020s equivalent of 10-11M back in the day. DW got 2M in both cases. 8 vs 2 is a larger disparity than 5 vs 2, therefore Jodie performed better than Capaldi.

The die hard fans are BEGGING for a retcon. Those who have watched since William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and/or Tom Baker are absolutely disgusted with what Doctor Who has become. They would be overjoyed if everything after Twice Upon A Time was erased.

I wouldn't go that far... she's a competent actress, and she's been good in other things, but she's hardly fantastic. The problem is, the role of The Doctor doesn't just need a "good" actor he needs to be a "charismatic" actor. She was held back by awful scripts, but frankly she just wasn't charismatic enough.

@@mikeboosh8776 Peter Capaldi wasn't good enough for the Doctor, despite having far better writing that Jodie Whittaker ever did. His era would have been outright fantastic if John Hurt was doing it. A confused, lonely, miserable Doctor in a regeneration that shouldn't even exist? John Hurt was born for that and technically achieved it but he was in the wrong incarnation. I would kill to see John Hurt do Series' 8 and 9. Series 10 too if he lived long enough. Keep everyone and everything else about those seasons the same, just get rid of Peter Capaldi. His pretentious, sociopathic and narcissistic performance ruined what should have been the best Doctor in New Who. Even in Twice Upon A Time, I watched Peter Capaldi talk to Bill about them respecting each other and wondered "why the hell is he making that seem like a threat?" This is supposedly after the Doctor ditched the cold hearted sociopath stage. If he still thought Bill was dead, he should have sounded sad, not cold. Bill was absolutely right when she called him an arse and he was an arse throughout his entire era. I'm more forgiving towards Jodie Whittaker because she was working with crap. Maxine Alderton was the only person in that era who could write anything worth a damn but she had to answer to a complete retard. David Tennant 2 and Ncuti Gatwa are in the same situation, so I just mentally erase everything after Twice Upon A Time from the Doctor Who canon. That's much easier than getting angry about it. I can't erase Peter Capaldi because his era was so damn good. Clara, Missy, Davros, Ashildr, River, Osgood, Kate and even Danny and Bill all brought something worthwhile to the table. Clara, Missy and Davros were the best characters in the era. Clara's a very strong contender for the greatest character, not just among the companions but on her own merits, in Doctor Who history. She felt like a real human being, with all the strengths, weaknesses and nuances that come with being a fully fleshed out person and I cared about her so much that I literally had a breakdown when she left. The Doctor himself can match Clara but it really depends on which regeneration he's in. Peter Capaldi was a regeneration that I couldn't stand but if I mentally go scorched earth on his botched Doctor, I'd be burning down everybody else along with him. The era was literally too good for him and that pisses me of more than if it had been bad. My way of working around that is to treat Peter Capaldi as the Valeyard. He was a disgraceful Doctor but a brilliant reinterpretation of Michael Jayston's "manifestation of the darker sides of your nature, somewhere between your 12th and final incarnation". Too bad he wasn't doing it on purpose. Steven Moffat should just throw up his hands and say "fuck it, the Doctor died in Trenzalore, the Valeyard stole his regenerations and this was his redemption arc".

I know...Whittaker era is the worst of the worst. It manages to make Sylv McCoy look better in comparison now. The effects of the Chibnall era were down to Cbeebies level. The whole thing was like a Cbeebies show aimed at just five to seven year olds. And it was dreadful. A ZX Spectrum 48K would have been able to make better special effects than some of the crap seen in the Whittaker era....

I like how they had Jodie stand on boxes, and beds, and basically anything just to give her some presence. I'm glad someone liked her era. 😅
