I absolutely loved that the reason the Meep talked in such a cute was wasn't just because it was pretending, it was because if it talked normally, you could see the rows of teeth.
The Meep appeared in a Doctor Who comic book arc in 1980 and was a story involving the Fourth Doctor in a story called The Star Beast. That is why in the opening credits it states that the episode was written by Davies but is also gave credit to the author and illustrator of the comic with the same name. Also Bernard Cribbins passed away after the filming of the three specials and there were some set photos released of Bernard in character in a wheelchair being pushed by The Doctor outside of the TARDIS, so hopefully he will be appearing at some point and the Doctor Who fam can say a proper goodbye to a much loved character and actor.
Don't forget that the 'curator' hinted that the doctor would eventually revisit older faces (from the special where Smith, Tennant, and hurt joined forces)
"They're gonna switch her out so that she becomes the 15th Doctor." I would unironically watch several seasons of the Doctor Donna. With Ncuti Gatwa as also the Doctor, but somehow a companion, just letting Donna do her thing.
Like a huge part of me wants the offshoot series of Fourteen shenanigans with Donna and Rose where occasionally they bump into Fifteen and Ruby (and whoever else they katamari up) ala the Adventures of Sarah Jane
My Mum was so much much like Donna, 9:42 was amazingly funny to grow up with, sadly my mum is no longer with us but seeing Donna back brings her back to me ❤
I had absolutely nothing against Jody Whittaker, in fact I thought she did an absolutely amazing job playing the doctor, I just HATED that she wasn’t given good material to work with, because the prospect of a female doctor is just awesome. It makes me sad, but alas, given that we have now had a female doctor, it stands to reason we probably will again, and hopefully the writing for them will be better than it was for Jody. They really did her dirty. Edit: I wrote this comment in the early area of the review part, so I hadn’t gotten to the bit where you basically said the same thing.
Jodi Whittaker is right up there alongside Paul McGann as the greatest squandered potential in DR Who history. Episode 1, she did the thing. The one thing. She made me believe she was the doctor. But the writing was so clunky, and she wasn't even the main character in most episodes, it felt like.
David Tennant is my favorite Doctor. I love his chemistry with Catherine Tate. It brings joy to my heart seeing The Doctor and Donna together again. I hope at the end of the specials before they say their goodbyes, The Doctor gives Donna another lottery ticket.
They announced Bernard Cribbins was coming back for the specials around the same time after David and Catherine were. There is exactly ONE photo of him shooting a scene, and he's in a wheelchair. He had also filmed all of his scenes (Probably going to just be in The Giggle) before he had passed away. So, we WILL see Wilfred Mott one more time.
I started watching the show in 2013, fairly late than most who watched Ten as actual kids (I was 15), but he's my absolute favorite. I ADORE all the doctors, but something about Tennant and the RTD era just makes me feel like a gleeful little kid again, which is weird considering a was a teen upon starting new who lol
While I think the solution to the metacrisis was a bit too simple, I also think this was similar to how River Song gave up the rest of her regenerations to heal the 11th Doctor, in that they released all of the energy due to being in a kind of post regeneration phase. Otherwise, I loved this episode!!!
Yeah the "let it go" part made no sense. Lots of women (including myself) can hold onto grudges or issues for years, even when we appear to have moved on 😂 I also have so many questions about how a sound-based device can now create holographic screens and bulletproof surfaces 🧐
Agreed with the simplistic resolution of the metacrisis of Rose and Donna. I would have loved an additional episode where they explored this tbh. But what an amazing comeback... I love the fun and energy of this special! ❤❤❤❤
This was an unexpected surprise! Big Doctor Who fan myself so to learn you guys are too is awesome! All the best from the UK! Also fun fact: Meep is voiced by Professor Sprout in Harry Potter, Miriam Margolyes.
Horrible episode, the woke nonsense, the trans, the pronouns, the man is bad, UTTER TRASH! RIPDRWHO! lowest ratings ever for a special! Such a surprise!
Donna: *Spills small amount of liquid into ancient godlike spaceship* Ship: oh woe is me! My console is totally shorted out (dramatic fire mode on) and I’m going to accidentally take off and accidentally take you wherever the hell I want to. Note the Chloister Bell wasn’t even ringing.
It was terrific! Can’t wait to see Wilf again with one of the two remaining shows. Tennant, Tate and the rest did such a (no surprise) brilliant job. Tennant was also terrific in Good Omens 1 & 2.
Fun fact, concerning the ET comments (which are absolutely warranted) The original comic strip RTD revised for this episode is from a couple of years BEFORE ET. This was a story from Tom Baker’s time.
This episode is based on a comic that was written by Pat Mills (creator of 2000AD) and drawn by Dave Gibbons (artist on Watchmen) in 1980... two years before ET. It was great to see their names in the opening credits If you can watch Doctor Who unleashed, they cover how they made the whole episode and feature Pat and Dave quite prominently
I cut it off when they started talking about what's the aliens preferred pronoun, well if that was the case, they could make the whole show asking people what they identify as, before they even talked to them! I mean if you want to go down that route and assume people's gender, you're literally going to have to ask every person you meet what they identify as! Well, why the hell would I waste my time talking to people then? I just keep it moving! Maybe if someone's drowning I'll stop to ask them what's their preferred pronoun, before I save their life. If I don't get feedback I'll just keep it moving I guess. Lol is so stupid! Oh by the way I still think Asians are the superior race! Well I'm off to watch anime hope you have a wonderful day!
On a show like dr who written by a guy like Davies, inclusivity is just standard and expected. Any complaints sound just like people 15 years ago complaining about gay characters.
@@mrdot1126Maybe you you but the rest of us dont judge entire stories on 3 seconds of the mention binary. Go fuck yourself and take your bullshit elsewhere
David Tennant and Catherine Tate are back, Yasmin Finney is in the Whoniverse now, we're gonna get a Bernard Cribbins appearance... These specials are the only things getting me through finals and I'm so happy :DDD edit: I do agree that the "let it go" thing is a little simplistic, but honestly I don't mind too much because that's so Doctor Who to me---sometimes there's solutions to things that really work mostly because the audience wants it to work, not because it would hold up under any real-world logic, and that's part of what gives the show its fun, childlike sense that I think draws a lot of people to it
As a trans person, I absolutely adored that whole scene from Rose getting deadnamed by those dickhead kids to Donna talking about how proud she is of her, it is done so well and captures what it’s like being a trans person so amazingly, especially that part where Sylvia accidentally misgenders Rose and is just immediately like “oh… sorry, I just get so clumsy…”, that captures such a real trans experience so well, like, my mum and grandma were exactly like that for like, the first 2 months after I came out to them, wanting to use my correct pronouns and not misgender me but just messing up sometimes because they’re a bit older and is just used to calling me by he/him pronouns and my deadname, it’s so accurate that I was just replaying that scene over and over for like 20 minutes when I first saw it, I cannot stress enough how insanely well done it is and how happy I am to see stuff like that in something like Doctor Who, it makes me so insanely happy and excited and is making me even more excited for the other 2 specials and all of the upcoming series with Ncuti Gatwa c:
I'm so glad you guys are being so positive and realistic about all the messaging, because it feels like the entire commentary community on Twitter cannot see beyond the "woke" and have actually started a hashtag of "RIP Doctor Who" which is genuinely disturbing to see...
it’s really cringy adding the identity and then making the doctor feel ashamed of being a “man” even though he stated earlier that he basically just goes by Doctor as a pronoun. Also it was kinda funny hearing a trans woman making fun of a man for not being a woman? 🤣
I want to believe that the scene where the Doctor sees the new TARDIS was actually just them filming David Tennant’s reaction to seeing the set for the first time
obviously tennant was amazing and catherine tate. They haven't missed when it comes to their comedic awesomeness. I cried quite a bit with the emotional points with them. I don't know how it's possible but Tennant's eyes have gotten more expressive. There was some plot stuff i was like yeah okay, but overall I enjoyed it. first ep in a good long while i was invested in.
I haven’t been excited about doctor who for awhile but I love this so much Tennant hasn’t lost it, he’s fantastic and Russell I’m so glad he’s back as showrunner. Wasn’t expecting this reaction from you guys but loved it, love you guys ❤
We'd all love this to be true that it was David's first reaction but in reality it sadly wasn't. In fact it was director Rachel Talalay who suggested to DT to zoom around the TARDIS which David loved, leaving him only to plan his route around the set with Rachel. David revealed this in the commentary for the episode with Exec Producer Phil Colinson & Producer Vicki Delow that is on BBC Iplayer. I'd expect it to be avaliable on the Bluray/DVD set for international viewers eventually
@@bobafettish660289 Oh my bad I thought you meant that was a first time reaction & he just legged it round the TARDIS, like I said I watched the episode commentary on BBC Iplayer & "Unleashed"
the meep was was a 4 part process the voice of Miriam margolyes a puppeteer in a full green screen suit animatronics operated off screen and cgi such an amazing creation
Really only had two issues with this special: The sudden new capabilities of the sonic screwdriver (the hologram computer and the shields) and the end when the metacrises just being “let go” felt rushed or lazy and just… eh. Otherwise had such a great time with this! 🤓
the meep was a puppet, worn by an actress, and an animatronic. the meep was done exceptionally, i’d definitely recommend watching the unleashed episodes. it shows the behind the scenes of all episodes
as a fan of Jodie Whitaker since long before doctor who having first seen her in Attack the Block and Broadchurch along side Tennant I was excited with the casting and hopeful for some great stories and a new Era of Who with a female lead. However I feel the problem fully where Jodie was concerned was purely the Material she was being given to work with on screen, old Who flowed so well blending a mix of fun , seriousness , world issues, stereotypes sci fi and silliness etc so well into a singular episode where as Chibnall's writing just didn't find that formula in my opinion and came off trying to hard in every aspect to be something of the past while failing at it horribly, i personally feel this is the best who since Capaldi and welcome Ncuti in to the Tardis with open arms next !! hope things keep getting better from here !
we were way past woke when eccleston said marxism was brilliant.... in series 1.... in an episode which introduced captain jack, the most hyper sexual character in any kids/family show 😂
"Marxism in action or a West End musical" right? I'd forgotten about that line 😂 It's funny to me how people have retconned the show's history in their mind. They always blame Chibnall for making it woke (personally I have 1000 other problems with his writing and woke doesn't factor into it lol) but we had Bill in s10, Clara mentioned kissing women, River talked about having ex wives, Vastra and Jenny in Smith's era, very obvious allegories to racism, even timelords switching gender was introduced back in s6 with the Corsair. If Jack was introduced in 2023 they would lose their minds 😂 The man was unstoppable, flirting with everyone! His arrival established that humans are basically all bisexual the 51st century too. Also the Doctor's first kiss in new Who which they seem to have completely forgotten.
ye but cpt jack didnt degrade the doctor for being a man, or constantly remind us that he is Bi, he just was, and we knew, without it being forced on us. There's a difference
@@hanonhold The main issue is that Chibnall's era is suffering from a huge disconnect between what the show wants to say is right or wrong and what the "good guys" and the "bad guys" do. For example in that infamous spider episode the Doctor is adamant about using guns but then advocates to let the spiders starve to death or die painfully when they grow too big. Or the Amazon... I mean Kablam episode that was either about working conditions or the repercussions of automation or both but in the end the Doctor decided to just blow the terrorist up and all was well, I guess? Or remember that fun time when the Doctor defeated the Master by exposing and handing him, a person of color(!), to the Nazis? And that is basically what brought this era from the old woke to the new woke: from being aware of injustice in society etc. to being pretentious about it.
It's kind of funny that the first episode of Doctor Who to stream on Disney+ Is based on a Marvel 1980 comic strip published by the UK's Marvel publishing arm. It even had 'Stan Lee presents Doctor Who and the Star Beast' at the beginning of each part.
It's classed as series 1! On the iplayer it goes 2005 - 2022 and then there's a new one 2023 - It's classed as a new era and series one one Disney and iplayer
Doctor Who was heavily associated with running long before David. Back in the classics they used to point out the amount of time they spend running up and down corridors.
I like to think the TARDIS reacted so strongly to the coffee because she was just like FOR FUCK SAKE I LITERALLY JUST REBUILT MYSELF AND YOU POUR COFFEE ON ME?
Honestly the only thing that disappointed me in this episode was that the Doctor didn't mention how the new TARDIS has so many of "the round things" ^^
Heyo it’s me your fellow Whovian fact finder. Here’s the facts for this episode, unlike the others on your journey so far there’s only been 2 days to collect/find facts unlike the others which have had at minimum a year at maximum 18 years to gather. The star beast facts 🔷 The Doctor's Theme is briefly heard when the Doctor uses his screwdriver. Likewise, a variation of the Eleventh Doctor theme song "I Am The Doctor" is heard in this episode specifically the scene where the Doctor Donna is activated. 🔷 The Star Beast marks the first appearance of the Fourteenth Doctor's sonic screwdriver on television. The Circumstanes surrendering why he has a new Sonic are not revealed in episode but instead in the Fourteenth Doctor Comic Story Liberation of The Daleks. 🔷 The title card includes a credit for Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons as the writers of the comic story it was based on. 🔷 The Star Beast aired one year, one month, and two days after The Power of the Doctor, marking the longest gap between two consecutive stories since the show's return to TV in 2005. 🔷 An in-vision commentary was released on BBC iPlayer immediately after the episode, which featured David Tennant, Phil Collinson, and Vicki Delow. It was recorded on 19th April 2023, according to Georgia Tennant's Instagram post, in which Tennant talks about Russell T Davies possibly not being able to do it the next day. 🔷 Though The Star Beast is not the first TV story to be adapted from other media, most other adaptations were written by the the same person as the original source material, such as Dalek (adapted from Jubilee) l, Human Nature, and The Lodger. 🔷 In his opening monologue the Fourteenth Doctor starts off by saying "Once Upon a Time Lord". Prior to this episode, there has been a graphic novel and a comic story had this as their title. 🔷 The Whoniverse ident is shown at the beginning of the BBC version, whereas the BBC ident is shown at the beginning of the Disney+ version. 🔷 Although not explicit at the time of release, the Redacted audio drama Redemption leads directly into The Star Beast, as the characters Cleo Proctor and Apex Costa watch the Meep's star cruiser fly through the skies of Camden Town 🔷 Doctor Who The Official Annual 2024 contained several works of fiction which teased some of the characters in The Star Beast: The short story We Are Family hinted towards the reunion of the Nobles and the Doctor, and Rose meeting the Meep 🔷 Bingham briefly mistakes the Fourteenth Doctor for the Tenth, referencing his involvement with UNIT in The Sontaran Stratagem , etc. The Doctor likewise recalls that he was UNIT's first scientific advisor, as seen in Spearhead from Space. (3rd Doctor) 🔷 The Doctor carries a Barrister's Wig and conducts a trial like his fourth incarnation in The Stones of Blood. 🔷 The Doctor mentions the Sonic Screwdriver is good at resonating concrete. He mentioned this before in the episode The Doctor Dances. (9th Doctor) Remember never be cruel, never be cowardly, always be kind and never eat pears 🍐
A momemt that struck me was David's face when Donna is saying why don't you do something wild and have dinner enjoy some company etc. Since she first met the doctor, he's gone from keeping more of a distance with his companions to investing and spending more time with them like with Rory and Amy, and Jodie's Doctor (the little I watched) also seemed focued on friends and companionship. The look on the Doctor's face was so weary and full of pain. He's been there done that and experienced even greater sorrow and grief because of it 💔
I’m so happy this was released on RU-vid!! Unfortunately I can’t afford to join your patreon as much as I’d like to support but seeing doctor who on there and not here has been harddddd!! 🎉 thank you!! 🙏🏼
The TARDIS did that on purpose. When has it had a coffee machine, RIGHT there? It knew Donna lost her job by spilling coffee on a computer. It needed her to do the same in the TARDIS to get them where they needed to be. The TARDIS knows what's up.
I loved this ep! Tennant and Tate slipped right back into their roles while still showing that their characters have matured. RTD has never been shy or subtle when it comes to depicting gender norms or fluid sexuality, so I thought the trans representation and spotlighting of the non-binary aspect of Time Lords/DoctorDonna/Rose was fitting. I took the "let it go" line to be a joke about men holding onto things but it didn't quite land. It would have been better to aim it specifically at Ten not being able to let things go because that's such an integral part of his character.
I loved every single second of this special, i immediately felt "at home" due to RTDs writing. Jodie was a good Doctor but suffered greatly from bad bad scripts. I think she would be doing great with RTD at the helm. I absolutely love that we got actually human conversations again - again something that was missing very much in Chibnalls Era - you can actually connect with the Characters. They're not just there.
I compare the special to a warm bowl of mashed potatoes. Yes, it has a few hard lumps in there that didn’t get fully mashed out to perfection, but it’s still very tasty and comforting in all the right nostalgic ways.
I think the Tardis was just upset about the coffee going to waste, it worked hard on brewing it as fast as it could and to have it just tossed on its console.
The bit with breaking down the brick walls wasn't exposing hidden rooms. The block was estate/row homes. They have brick walls separating each house all the way to the roof as a fire barrier.
This was such an interesting return. Obviously the production getting that huge budget increase with the Disney co-financing helps distinguish this new era. Then there's also the story of this special which I think felt a bit rushed to resolution for the whole Donna dies plot. I think it's a fine resolution just didn't have an impact.
Disney co-financing isn't necessarily a good thing, everything they've been churning out lately has just been lazy, watered down, commercial, nostalgia bait. It may well distinguish it but not in a good way. I always think less is more, which is why Eccleston's series is one of the best ever. It's very far removed from what it used to be, and has forgone story for preachyness
@@robbo_96The higher budget is definitely a benefit for a show like Doctor Who, considering how popular the show is it deserves a bigger budget so they aren’t so limited and they’re not involved creatively The series hasn’t forgone story for “preachiness” at all, it’s always done stuff like that even in the first era with representation. It was done well and felt natural, some stuff was a tiny bit of the nose but it doesn’t matter. If anything it’s a good way to weed out the homophobic/transphobic fans who deserve to feel offended over their problematic views. It’s a part of life now and something that needs to be accepted and normalised The character of Rose highly resonated with my partner and brother who are both trans so clearly it meant alot of them which was good. Everyone deserves to have a character that resonates with them It was way better done then when Chibnall would do it cuz RTD is just a better doctor who writer
@@dylanburton4955 the thing is when you force a message or an agenda on the audience then they're more likely to reject it. You said it best when the revival series first came out the use of representation did feel natural and was well-written i.e. with the inclusion of Jack Harkness. We accepted him as a loveable rogue who was treated as a normal human like anyone else. His sexuality wasn't laboured on nor was there a need by the producers to remind us of modern-day social justice issues, which actually dates it more (giving it's a show that spans all of space and time) and in the long run makes it more irrelevant. He was who he was, and in other TV shows (Star Trek TOS and TNG come to mind) there's countless episodes where the moral of the story is people overcoming prejudices, but they were told subtly through analogies and metaphors, not through a very obvious message that takes more priority than entertaining the viewer, or more priority than plot and character development. I have no issue with representation, and in recent history the Bill and Frank episode in The Last of Us is a great example of how messages of inclusivity can be worked in really well; it was a well-written love story between two people who happened to be gay, and there was no shoehorned line about how they were treated worse than straight guys, as that would've been irrelevant to, and distracted from, the overall theme/plot of the show. Likewise with the new DW, I don't mind there's a trans character but does there have to be obligatory lines about pronouns or how the Doctor was better when a female? It takes us the audience out of it. Also higher budget doesn't guarantee higher quality, as it can force the producers to take the easy "bigger is better" approach, but you can risk it becoming an incoherent, overblown mess that takes away from what the show special in the first place. Sometimes a smaller budget forces greater creativity to overcome the limited resources.
I was over the moon with the Timeless Children. I had waited so long to finally get a continuation of the founding fathers/Cartmel Masterplan plot line from the 1980s and restore the mystery that was arguably lost with "The War Games," and "Flux" is not only my favourite story but one of the best things I've ever watched; it's a modern-day "The Daleks' Master Plan". It was also good to go back to the concept of pre-Hartnell Doctors from "The Brain of Morbius." Jodie's era is one of my favourites; it is up there with William Hartnell's, Jon Pertwee's, Tom Baker's, and Peter Davison's for me. It brought back many elements that were lost when Russell T. Davies took over. His era feels more like a reinvetion of the show to me, which is understandable as he was concerned that audiences may not be able to connect with an older and lower-budget show, but his original approach wasn't for me. I don't agree that Jodie's era was more gritty or bleak; all eras have had bleak and gritty stories. I felt that this episode was a step down from recent episodes. I did enjoy it, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this 60th anniversary mini-series and the new era go, but I felt that the elements of it in the comic of the same name were the strongest. The resolution was, personally, the worst I have seen. It was filled with plot contrivances and undid the meta-crises at the snap of a finger. Not that I ever bought into that plotline given that remembering her adventures with the Doctor never seemed to harm her, instead making her erupt with regeneration energy before fainting as it did in "The End of Time." The next two episodes might change my opinion, though, and I did like the "Courtroom" scene, as it was a nod to "The Stones of Blood." I also like that the sonic scwerdriver can make forcefields now; it's had a laser function since "The Dominators," even if it was used to cut objects, not as a weapon, which started with Matt Smith's Doctor. Also, I wonder if you have watched "Destination: Skaro," the new minisode; it's available on RU-vid as "The Fourteenth Doctor is Here! | BBC Children in Need 2023 | Doctor Who."
Really enjoyed the episode, it feels like Doctor who again and Tennant and Tate feel like they never left As far as introductions to a new era go, this was really good and very entertaining. I’m excited for the next specials and the new series
Solid 7/10 the meep story was great, donna and 14 were brilliant. The pacing was a bit weird and some of the writing felt a fair bit forced (the whole male presenting timelord "let it go" moment was super contrived) which was a shame. The resolution to the metacrisis felt like a cop out and donna and rose aquiring impossible knowledge about the doctors life aince they last saw them meant we missed out on a dramatic big reunion. The A plot of the meep- 10/10 The B plot of the DoctorDonna 5/10
@@itzbp9949 eh, Rose being trans is something that deserved to be mentioned but the way they did so was hamfisted and was probably more harmful than good. Giving her the "did you just assume" lines was forced. All it really did was perpetuates strerotypes, i hope we see more of her so her character can be more than that.
I really liked this episode. Great performances, cool new villain, love the new actors, and I'm really excited about how they're gonna close Donna's story. My only complaint is that some of the themes are a bit too heavy handed, and I think the action could have been handled a little better. All in all, like a 7.5-8/10 for me, very excited for the next 2 episodes.
@@swiftlymurmurs There's a difference between being heavy handed and literally calling out pronoun usage and saying a "male presenting Doctor wouldn't understand" that's way more on the nose. To be clear I had no problem with it, but that certain segment of the fandom (are they really fans then?) are having a field day (as expected) with it all. Shame they can't just watch it and enjoy it.
@@LordLOC it was absolutely a little more than usual, but by god could the UK use some full-throated trans support right now, even if it's clumsy, so I'll take it
@@swiftlymurmurs I mean things aren't great for trans folk here in the US, so I'd agree on that one also. Just unreal how a certain segment of the political spectrum (I won't name any side or anything mind you) just picked trans people out of the blue like 3 or 4 years ago and made them out to be the harbinger of the end times - LITERALLY.
I'm nonbinary myself, and while I felt that some of the dialogue was a bit clunky towards the end, I really enjoyed the attempt. The relationship between Donna and Rose was lovely. I also loved them acknowledging the inbuilt gender queerness of a character like the Doctor. Also, if I had a nickel everytime David Tennant played a genderfluid immortal who fell in love with a blond, etc etc
I didn't really understand rose chastising the doctor saying he wouldn't understand from his male perspective considering he was literally just a female. That part just didn't make since to me
@whofactchecksthefactcheckers Yeah, that's one of the things I didn't like. They'd just pointed out that the Doctor was male, female, both, and neither. I don't get what their presentation would change about understanding that sort of thing, lol
You know what i remember fondly. The end if the dr donna saga where after they won, Donna was so happy but then got brain stuck on binary binary binary. 😮. When i saw Tennants face i knew we were losing donna as a regular and it broke my heart
The Doctor has been excited over previous Tardis regenerations. Most recently, the 13th Doctor (Jodie Whitaker) was excited when the Tardis returned to her and her fam on a faraway planet after she had fell out of the Tardis to Earth and it disappeared. Because it was damaged, once again, when the Doctor opted to regenerate INSIDE of it despite the increasing collateral damage said regenerations caused to the immediate surrounding area. Which was often the excuse the show used to revamp the Tardis with each subsequent Doctor. The real surprise is that it had a coffee maker not a tea pot considering this is a veddy proper British show. Maybe it was an olive branch to their new American partner, Disney Plus.👍😁
Aww heck yeah glad to see this on youtube!! Loved the episode so happy to see my favourites David and Catherine back! Some bits felt a little rushed i wouldn't have minded an extra 15 minutes or something to get the emotion in there a little more and a bit less "everyone gets it because big brains so just trust us" 🤣. But gosh I've missed David! And RTD is such a great writer and really knows how important representation is. I think it feels most earnest coming from him. I'm a cis woman so sure i can't understand being trans or being non-binary, but we all know how it feels to be able to connect to something we love, feeling welcome in a space and feeling a sense of self. Episodes like this will mean a lot to some and i love that!
Ok, you've missed it at one level. Representation is all well and good, and there are many people that could do with a lecture... But the Doctor is not one of them. And "no male presenting timelord would understand" ... Really? You think he just forgot those seasons as Whittiker so quickly? Sorry, but no. You can lecture just about anyone you wish on that subject... But not the Doctor.
I have never been a Doctor Who fan but the fact they cast Ruth Madeley as Shirley, and have done some really cool things with her character right away like put WEAPONS IN HER WHEELCHAIR! AWESOME!, well I'm a fan now! It's so important to see someone like Ruth in this show as a wheelchair user myself. Seriously though, except for explosives obviously, I wish self defensive weaponry built into a wheelchair were legal lol Like give me spikes on my foot plates to ram into people's shins if necessary or something. The sedative darts would work too I suppose but there's no chance of that ever being real 😆
