Personally, I kinda like the regeneration from Seven to Eight. Think about it, the Seventh Doctor spend his existence as this grand Chessmaster, manipulating his friends and enemies like pawns on a cosmic chessboard. And then he gets taken out in a random act of violence. You gotta love the irony.
@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502
@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 3 года назад
The concept of his death is not the problem, the issue is the execution is out of character. They Serously expect us to belive he wouldn't so much as check the scanners? A better way to do this would be if he was killed once he got a significant distance away from the tardis. Or alternatively start in the middle of an adventure and have him randomly encounter the thugs after having been on earth for a while and being unable to get out of the situation. The same concept and the same irony would be present, but this way it would be much more in line with his character.

One other thing about regeneration 9-10: the writers had to show new viewers, people who weren’t born during the Classic era, this unique capacity of the classic character. So they had to explain the concept, then show it with contemporary technology. It was well carried out.

I think what also makes Davison's great is how after all the companions show up as visions to compel him to regenerate, a vision of Anthony Ainley's Master shows up telling him to die. You could almost argue it's The Master taunting him that gets him to regenerate. Not allowing himself to die to spite The Master.
@Sara-ub5ic
@Sara-ub5ic 4 года назад
my favourite regeneration is 12 to 13 and that's mainly because 12's last words were "laugh hard, run fast, be kind" and how much 13 seems to embody those words, she wants to be happy and wants to have friends and have fun. the doctor came a long way from being the soldier whose willing to do anything to stop the war. plus it helps that Peter Capaldi is an amazing actor and watching his regeneration scene makes me tear up every time.

I think Tennant’s tantrum is a look into the doctors arrogance and a window into 10s darker side. He appears the most human and compassionate version of the Dr but he has this arrogance and self importance bubbling under the surface. You have to listen to Big Finish "The last adventure" its five hours 6th vs Valeyard and they did a propper regeneration for Colin Baker. Hearing that still tears me up. The 6th Docter is soooo well done in the Audios and in last adventure, he got a regeneration right on spot. Also watch the fanmade video on yt "6th Doctor regeneration last adventur" its so well done. For Capaldi, the part with "Children can hear your name" Capaldi was asked on Comic Con by a lil boy whats the Doctors name was. Capaldi beein great with fans, told him that exact speech. He wanted to keep it in the regeneration. lovly Easter-Egg btw every modern Doctor-Regeneration has a line that wasnt in the script, but said by the actors, what they wanna say. McGann "physician heal yourself" Ecclstones (you were fantastic) "and so was I" Tennant "I dont want to go" Smith "I will always remember, when the Doctor was me" Capadi "Children can hear your name....."
@Deathlygunn
@Deathlygunn 4 года назад
Pretty sure "I don't want to go" was scripted, there's behind the scenes of Tennant delivering the line in different emotional states, and I can't see Russell letting Ten's final line be "You're going to have a great year."

@thomasnieswandt8805 4 года назад
@@Deathlygunn you are right...well maybe it was bad from my side...of corse its in the script, but the actors had the freedom to put some words of their own into the regeneration. Tannent was the one who wanted to leave the show but the "I dont want to go" was fitting to the "I could have done so much more" after he rescued Wilf.

@lwaves
@lwaves 4 года назад
@Thomas Nieswandt While the actor may have some freedom in what and how they say it when delivering the line, they still don't get the final say on if it makes it to the episode. That largely comes down to the director and editor and they will use the one they want. Personally, I liked his last line, it fitted the journey his incarnation had been through and I agree that it fits the line you mention. It's worth bearing in mind too that while Tennant had decided to leave, he has said that he had doubts over it, after he'd decided to go.

I thought Tennant's regeneration felt very vain. The time when his time came to an end, it felt correct. I did not feel sadness, it felt the Doctor was going to right his sins. Maybe the 10th Doctor is getting transformed into the Master. Time Lord Victorious. Infinite potential. Corrupting timeline. In a Christmas special, he said something along the lines that if he could choose whom to save he'll be a monster. Now, it's the abyss staring back and he realized he must end this regeneration or he'll turn into something worse.

You ranked Ten to Eleven low... If I ever meet you, I'm going to kiss you lol you nailed every one of my issues with the scene and with Ten in general. He was an immature man-child who couldn't grapple with reality. Eleven was a man-child, but he had a level of maturity to him that Ten didn't. And Nine was immature, but he handled his regeneration with class and bravery. Ten was a baby about it all the way up to his Very. Last. Moment. The size of the 10/11 regeneration was huge because at the time 10 was massively loved and no one wanted him to go, the 10th doctor was a huge deal, so they wanted him to go out with a bang, with such a glorious feeling that it captured how fans felt, it also signifies the change of the show, it wasn't a regeneration of the Doctor, it was a regeneration of the whole show

I had no problem with Ten to Eleven's whole "I don't want to go" thing but I'd still rank in fairly low. The goodbye tour was a bit too long but I can ignore that because of Wilf being in it. I didn’t like it for many reasons but the whole “I don’t wanna go” line is just poor, no doctor wants to go but they get on with it, Russel wrote it badly as the scene in the cafe badly explains regeneration and makes it out to be when the doctor regenerates he isn’t the same person, which is bull crap. Great list, even though we have some key differences (I quite like 4 into 5 for example). 6 into 7 was horrible and I felt so bad for Colin. I'm glad he's still a part of the fandom and is involved with the show but that was handled terribly. I HATED that hissy fit by 10. It was extremely annoying and it seriously lowered my opinion of that incarnation. The whole; 'I don't want to go!' was so whiny I was glad he was gone. He could've handled that so much better. 10 could be brilliant indeed and I first finally watched all of new Who I saw why people liked him so much as he was great early on but at the end there he became so irritating it was a relief when he left. I still enjoy 10's time overall despite the ending of his tenure. I loved how much better 11 handled it than 10 did and it's my favorite modern regen scene. And like you, I felt Time of the Doctor was not particularity good, but that end scene was done so well; touching without self-indulgence or melodrama, that's how it should be done. 3 into 4 was very touching. Sarah Jane Smith is still my number one companion and seeing that quiet moment was wonderful. While not a regen scene, it reminds me a lot of the end of The Green Death when Jo left. No over the top theatrics, just a quiet, tender moment that let's the viewer feel the emotion of the situation without clobbering us over the head with. I did like 9 into 10. The fantastic thing was pretty cool and he really didn't overdo it which was great. 5 into 6 was solid and I loved it too. Peri's confusion and Colin's remarks in Androzani were great fun.

I liked Capaldi's Doctor, and he did knock the speech out of the park, but I still didn't like it. To each their own. You don't know who the Sisterhood of Karn is??? You haven't got to 'The Brain of Morbius' in your classic series watch, then? I actually pretty much agree with your ranking of the regenerations. One (only high because of the impact) 8. Two (amazing story, but others are better) 7. Ten (overblown yes, but the emotion is still there) 6. Three (understated and underrated) 5. Eight (chills every time he names his BF companions) 4. Four (probably the best final line of any Doctor and beautiful music) 3. Nine (simple and wonderful) 2. Eleven (mixed story yes, but a perfect speech and music choice. Although he is my favourite so I'm a bit bias) 1. Five (iconic and genius)

I don’t have a problem with the trip down memory lane, it wasn’t just Tennant that was leaving, it was also the showrunner and production staff so I don’t begrudge them giving themselves a pat on the back for a job well done. I think my favorite overall might be Nine's regeneration into Ten. It's relatively short and sweet, and I love how he tries to bring some humor into the situation despite being sad. Him sacrificing himself to save the person who opened up his hearts after the horror of the Time War also just felt appropriate to me. I have to admit I'm not huge on Eleven or Twelve's regenerations. Their speeches were nice, but I honestly don't care for big speeches ahead of regenerations. To me, it feels kind of awkward and inauthentic. Even more so than Ten's, which I will agree was self-indulgent --- but that simple, "I don't want to go," worked for me and very quickly summed up so much about what made Ten such a tragic version of the character. Thirteen's regeneration was beautifully done as well, imo. I haven't seen ALL the Classic regenerations yet, but of the ones I've seen, I definitely like Pertwee to Baker best. There was a certain poignance to it, but it wasn't overblown. The Second Doctor's regeneration also gets me, if for no other reason than that it's so traumatic and is forced on him.

@quinnsinclair7028

I didn’t quite hate Ten’s regeneration in and of itself. It was self indulgent but it was at least somewhat justified. What I hate about it is the precedent it set for future regenerations. The idea that regeneration is like death and the next version is just someone else with your memories. The Tardis exploding because the doctor regenerated inside it. The protracted exploration of it. All of that was somewhat justified with Ten specifically but it carried over to all future regenerations in situations where it was not justified at all. Ten exploded cause he was releasing lethal amounts of nuclear radiation. What was Eleven’s excuse? Twelve? Eleven’s regeneration destroyed a Dalek mothership. How does that make sense. If every time lord was a thirteen use suicide bomber capable of taking out that big a target how did they ever lose the war? And all of that starts with Ten’s regeneration. I don’t hate it for what it is but for what it did.
@benw4409

With Eleven it could be because he was given a new cycle and there was excess energy. Twelve's is dumb though because being electrocuted by a Cyberman should not do THAT to the TARDIS.

I think that regeneration is destructive when it's being hold for too long, 10th and 12th both took a very long time before regenerating. For 11th it might be because there was excess energy with his new cycle, like Ben W said.
@quinnsinclair7028
@quinnsinclair7028 4 года назад
Miraculous Juju One held his regeneration from the midway point of Tenth Planet to the last few seconds of the final episode. That was three or four episode he was holding it. Not to mention there is a room in the Tardis specifically for difficult regenerations for exactly this reason. If as you say holding a regen makes it more destructive 10 and 12 should have known that and sought out the clean room instead of wandering around the engine room talking to themselves till they blew it up. More important though we should not have to be making up head canon for why the regenerations suddenly started getting super destructive and self indulgent. The answer is simple, it makes it easier for the new guy to redesign the Tardis and the old guy gets to spend several scenes going on about how grandiose and important the doctor that he created was.

Whenever I watch Tennant regenerate I always feel bad for Will. He has to stand there watching 10 have a whole breakdown and poor Will is standing there probably feeling guilty as hell and like its fault the doctor has to die/change (depending on how that doctor or the audience likes to view regeneration). I get why 10 reacts like that but it niggles at me that he put Will in a shitty position stuck there watching and feeling guilty. I love Wilf too much for that 🥺

I think the 'children can hear your name' part in the 12th Doctor's speech reflects upon the deep impact the show has on kids. Capaldi himself was a 5 year old when he saw the show for the first time, and he has often said that as a child the show fired his imagination in a way that nothing else did. I don't think that part of the speech is meant to be taken literally- like children can literally hear his name- but rather in a metaphorical way, that the show has a special significance and appeal for children and they understand its meaning in a unique way that adults don't. That's why he says that children can hear his 'name' , but nobody else.

I always felt each Doctor's regeneration speech was also meta: a message from the actor, or actor + showrunner, to the audience. I could go deeper into each one, but the two that stand out, to me, (IMO): 11th has one 4th wall breaking moment as he recites his last line: looking sideways into the camera he says "I will always remember when the Doctor was me". But the one that is meta at 3 different levels (who could have written it but Moffat) is 12th's: 1) It's Capaldi letting go of his childhood dream ("Doctor, I let you go") 2) A message from Moffat to the fandom addressing the "tense" (to put it mildly, I'm not touching that topic) relationship as both Doctor Who and Sherlock's showrunner: "Never be cruel, never be cowardly (...) Remember hate is always foolish and love is always wise (...) always try to be nice but never fail to be kind. Laugh hard. Run fast. Be kind" 3) Finally, it works as the passing of the torch to the new team. The part about children: it's just a reminder that the show was conceived as an educational show for kids. Kinda like George Lucas' reminding the fandom that Star Wars was made for 12-year-olds. It just sounds like a last-minute add, weirdly placed at the last minute, from a reshoot or something (a shame, because otherwise, I think it would have been a perfect speech). This is just my reading, don't hate me, I already have my comment hate quota filled by the SW fandom.

I really think Capaldi's regeneration fits better into "the doctor falls" then 'twice upon a time", and knowing that Moffat only did it because Chibnall didn't intended to have a Christmas special makes me kind of bummed that it didn't happened the way it was intended in the S10 finale. I do like twice upon a time but the final moments of the doctor falls with Bill putting the doctor in the TARDIS, and that pose with the red velvet of the coat like a puddle of blood, but more important the reason is kind of like Davidson but a little more bittersweet and a summation of the "where I stand is were I fall" speech.

The fifth doctors regeneration is even better when you consider that he doesn't really know Peri very well yet, they only met in the previous story and they didn't spend all of that story together, so he sacrifices himself, without hesitation, for someone that he doesn't know all that well. I dont really mind the difference in the regenerations. To me even though they are the same doctor, each one is his own person. So while one dies accidentally, another dies of old age, one dies heroically, one dies non-descript, another is forced by Time Lords etc etc. If each one died the same way going out with a bang saving the universe and making tremendous sacrifices it would become too self indulgent in my opinion. While 5th to 6th was a really good idea which ended in a truly explosive and psychedelic regeneration reminiscent of the adverse effects of drugs... I heard somewhere that the production team were inspired by the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" from Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, considering the regeneration built up to this climax like the aleatoric orchestra heard in the song.

Quite interesting. There are a couple that I'd place lower than you do. 1. Capaldi to Whittaker. No problem with either actor, but the script drags it out much too long. I don't like summoning up the companions just to say goodbye, and I don't like the long speech, even if it was well delivered. Just get on with it, please. 2. Ecclestone to Tennant. No problem with Ecclestone, but Tennant arrives and looks like a twerp by comparison. When he says "Oh, that's right: Barcelona!", he seems to be parodying a southern-English accent, rather than playing it straight. That's something an American probably wouldn't notice. Of course, his own accent is Scottish, and for the regeneration scene he hadn't had time to get into the swing of the English accent. I'm not very keen on Tennant's Doctor in general, but he later did better than in that first scene.
