While being dragged by the TARDIS and Ncutti is standing in the doorway gloating, Sutekh apparently forgot that he can: 1) make his eyes flash and kill someone on the spot with a mere glance. 2) Say "My mind is in yours" and instantly posses them as a meat puppet. This was not Sutekh.

@@robertrowles5450 It’s all done on purpose. RTD knew exactly how much older “Gamon” fans loved Pyramids of Mars and how they described Sutekh as the Drs most powerful villain. This was his revenge. Put him on a dog’s leash and haul him through the vortex tied to the Tardis. It’s spiteful, malicious trash!

RTD really saw the timeless child retcon and said "hold my beer." The doctor's origins are gone. Gallifrey is burned. The sonic isn't a screwdriver. The doctor doesnt have to pass the torch permanently when regenerating. The tardis had a god of death in it 'all along'. Davros needs to walk. Sutekh is a dog on a leash. The toymaker - a god of games - can lose a game of catch. People can make it snow if they're born on christmas and believe their parents are important. I'm fully expecting RTD to say the chameleon circuit is now fixed without sutekh and so it no longer looks like a tardis. I don't care anymore. Chibnall had flat boring bad characters, but RTD just took everything and said "I'll keep the broken bits and add my own." There's no tangibility left.

Re the whole "cultural appropriation" thing, I have a quip I like to pull out on occasion regarding the paradox of progressive attitudes to other cultures - the oneliner is this "the past is like a foreign country - it is full of savages". At the risk of ruining a joke by explaining it, is the idea that foreigners are "savages" for being culturally different is, (correctly in my view) recognised as arrogant jingoism by people who consider themselves "progressive" but they fail to see the arrogance or bigotry in their presumption of superiority to the different culture of the past. A pattern repeated across all the foreign cultures we are supposed to respect, because to not do so is jingoistic, is they respect the wisdom of their ancestors. To me the arrogance that we as a nation have it worked out and other nations are inferior is the same kind of arrogance as to think we as a generation have it worked out and previous generations are inferior.
@markpostgate2551
@markpostgate2551 3 месяца назад
P.S. Where there is a there there with regards to "cultural appropriation" is when something is reused from another culture by someone who is ignorant of its meaning and they are just pretentious or commercialising, e.g. tatoos of Japanese lettering by someone who doesn't speak Japanese, and whilst it would be absurd to make someone pass an exam in customs traditions and symbolism within a particular culture before you can use elements from it, there should be a certain shame to using symbols of sacred significance without understanding their meaning. Now Robert Holmes knew enough about Egyptian mythology to know that Sutekh is not a dog! Anubis is a dog (or at least a jackal. It is not entirely clear what Sutekh is supposed to be - some think it is a donkey; Set's animal may be a completely mythical creature.). If not respecting the source material is supposed to be the bad thing about "cultural appropriation" then RTD is far more guilty of the "bad thing" than Holmes was. Certainly the ears should be wider at the top than at the bottom and he doesn't have multiple eyes. As the reincarnation of a pharoah I am offended.~ 😂 Does reincarnation count as "cultural appropriation"; if "that myth cycle can't be significant to you; you're not of that culture" and the accused says "well I used to be in a previous life"; I mean, surely if you can claim to be a woman because you can feel like one, if you feel you used to be Nefertiti, who can dare accuse you of "cultural appropriation" because you have a Bast statuette on your mantelpiece?

I talked elsewhere about how I don't think Davies nesessarily believes in a lot of the things he goes off on, but due to either fear (of criticism/Cancel Culture) or just a burning need to be 'Popular', he has made himself an avatar for Media Progressive causes and all the 'underdog' minorities out there. This includes 'Gen Z' hysteria and whatever cause is trending on Social Media... So he is heavily compromised today. He has a tick-box in his head, and most of his scripts have to be slaved and shaped by that Fear/Urge he has to be seen to be on the 'right side' - he isn't so much _courting_ Progressive idealists out there, as he is Appeasing them. He is desperate to appease, acknowledge their causes, and thereby stay 'popular' and untouched by todays very fickle Media 'hit'-squads. In a sense Doctor Who *is* about history. It's a time-travel premise, and in time past has explored history, seen its cast survive the dangers in earth's history, and learn to accept that they cannot change everything they come across. The modern series though it judgemental, _extremely_ Judgemental. Because that's the fears and environment of the people running and writing it that is coming out in their work. Today, when you think on it, there is virtually no chance of the mature and sensible conclusion to 1964's The Aztecs, where the Companions learn to understand that it is not their moral duty to judge other cultures, and go hellbent to try and change those cultures they disagree with. As unpleasant as the Aztec way of life was to them, it IS their way of life. Not 'ours'. And we must learn to accept that peoples re different, not necessarily right, just... a different outlook and set of beliefs. There is absolutely no way you would get that philosophy from todays Producers and writers on the television series, Big Finish yes, (current Paul McGann release raises it), but todays television makers are so incredibly judgemental, driven by social media and Progressive thinking, that authorising a story that repeats that wisdom seen in The Aztecs, would be completely out of the question... Which, when you think on that, shows off how very *extreme* these people actually are.

@@davidmullen6011 Very astute analysis, David. In the same way that RTD wants to be a frontman for Media Progressive causes, Ncuti is obviously positioning himself to be the frontman for the Next Generation gay movement. And I'm very thankful we have the vast majority of the Classic Series still existing so we can go back and revisit those treasures, while this current tripe will just dissolve into the mists of time, forgotten like last week's garbage. Because I can't really see anybody 30 years from now pulling out "Empire of Death" and rewatching it for the 20th time.

Well talking as someone that studied Egyptology, had it not been for western "cultural appropriation" in collecting Egyptian artifacts the Muslim interlopers who invaded Egypt in the middle ages would by 1911 have opened every tomb, burned every mummy and melted every artifact down for its gold. We prefer to call it "conservation" but Ncutti Gatwa of the clan McTutsi, the most Scottish of all Rwandans apparently disagrees.

Great show. Many thanks, Brendan, Rachael and Gary. I don't like Ncuti's Doctor. I still don't see him as the Doctor; I see him as Ncuti. But maybe that's wholly intentional. When Ruby asked who those people were on the screen - the 4th Doctor and Sarah - didn't he say, "They travelled in the TARDIS"? He didn't say, "Oh, that's Sarah Jane Smith, a very good friend of mine, and that man with the curly hair and scarf, that's me!" This Doctor isn't the same person we met in that junkyard in Totter's Lane. This Doctor is a peculiar offshoot from David Tennant's 14th Doctor, a separate version, like Oddbod Junior in Carry On Screaming, but nowhere near as endearing. He's not the same Doctor, and he's not even travelling in the same TARDIS. He doesn't act like the Doctor and he doesn't have exciting adventures in space and time. It's a different show about a different person, but with the same title and theme tune. I did like seeing Mel again. Bonnie was great, as was Millie. So I did enjoy this season finale to some extent.

That snub about "Just people that traveled in the TARDIS" was such a grubby dismissal of the most popular Doctor Who ever, and one of the most loved companions ever, even as RTD desperately mined their era of the show for precious member berries to cram in to his gormless fanfiction episode.

Davies has ALWAYS written Doctor Who as if it's Eastenders with aliens. I've never enjoyed his love of soap opera style writing over science fiction. It's one of the features I was bracing myself more when he was announced as returning...and he did exactly what I expected. But went further with added messaging standing in for strong storylines.

Most Television Listing Magazines didn’t do their usual articles on a Dr Who finale. That shows a lack of interest from the media. This Season has not registered with them or the British public. Word of mouth is hugely important and Dr Who is getting negative feedback not positive.

The overnights make up between 55%-60% of the total audience. Why certain people say they aren’t important is beyond me. Any episode that gets 2 million viewers isn’t going to get more than 1.5 million on Catch-up. 3.5 million in total. The overnights is the main figure to cover as you can then give a fairly accurate guess for the +7 numbers.

To follow some of Rachel's observations, it's perfectly clear that both Whittaker and Gatwa were anointed, not cast. The Chibnall case is more interesting. It's common practice in most walks of life to hire people you've worked with before and perfectly understandable. It'll be tough going and you need someone you know you can rely on. That may indeed be insiderism and elitism, but it is understandable. However, he was unwilling to cast a net, first approached Olivia Coleman who turned him down and then compromised on Whittaker. in my view that was professional cowardice. With RTD it's simpler - he wanted Gatwa and that was it. The result has been the only two miscast leads in the show's history. The other common point is that both have plainly been gratefully compliant. No actor or tress wants to be difficult but the job does actually involve kicking back a bit for a better result. To take it further, I think the problem is the modern era curse of the almighty "showrunner". The other production roles still exist but really just as "three bags full sir" merchants and to do the tiresome gophering. This has reached its apotheosis with RTD 2.0 and the show is now ultimately just an expression of a single person's ideas, sensibilities, opinions and judgement. No way to run a ship. There's a clear parallel with when the show was cancelled in the '80s. As a result of executive indifference (even dislike) and desperation (because nobody else wants the gig), in both instances the show has devolved into doomed dictatorship. I'd add that Moffat said to Chibnall "you're the only one who can take this on". Chibnall took this as an ego fluff, but I'm not sure there was anyone else who wanted the job. I also suspect that if they hadn't been able to get Davies back (and he negotiated a damn good deal), it would have ended then and there.

When Peter Davison left the role JNT said " get me Colin Baker I don't want anybody else" . Chinbollocks was always saying to Whitaker on the set of Boringchurch "you would be a great doctor who " and got Tennant & Arthur Darville (Rory) to tell her the same . He gave her the job in late 2016 after Peter Capaldi's decision to quit was not publicly known . RTD said he had cast another actor (Fady Elsayed from class ) he said "I was packing to go home and had already cast the role when when this beautiful man walked in (Gatwa) he didn't have to say or do anything i pointed and said "you are the the new doctor ". Fantastic show as usual . Your Puppet Show was much better written than "Empire of Death".Glad you guys noticed the scene with Rose in the background playing on her tablet it's ridiculous . I realise many defended her( non) actions as operating guns on the roof or some such thing. Here's a thought; make that obvious and do some acting. It looked like a bored teenager to me. The Doctor has to change his Sonic but it's ok for a kid to access machine guns? I really tried hard to find things to like this season, but writing is not one of them. I recently saw the episode of the TV Show "Imagine" featuring RTD and he proudly admitted most of his finished scripts were first drafts. Evidence to me that a Script Editor is needed. The arrogance of the man makes me so angry. In the latest live stream of Type 40 Dan stated that Season 3 HAS been commissioned WITH RTD & Gatwa. I really hope this decision is reconsidered. I feel bad behaviour is being rewarded.

@@gar535 Cheers Gary ,it's crazy. The fan in me would love to believe entertainment is primarily created by talented people who believe in what they do and who's primary aim is to enrich and if done properly educate. The reality is that it's largely about ego, money and power. Which is fine if the result is good. The motivations behind this newest series baffle me. If the BBC and Disney's desire was success, financially or otherwise, why did they allow RTD free reign? If RTD's motivation was ensuring Doctor Who was seen by as many viewers as possible, why did he aim for the narrowest demographic possible? He deliberately alienated fans and ignored casual viewers? I frankly don't care about RTD's agenda and messaging, but I am annoyed that he did it so badly. Good writing should come from a personal place, but use allegory and be clever in your process. Create stories that appeal to a large audience designed to resonate with people on different levels. Be inclusive not exclusive. RTD was handed an IP with 60+ years of good will and limitless untapped potential and he pissed it away. Now it looks like he will continue to do so. What am I missing here?

@@dougsims4242 Every point you made here is dead on. I think RTD was so enraptured from being given a huge platform for his personal ideology, with a vaultload of funding, that he was like a 5-year-old on Christmas morning, ripping through every wrapped package with crazed abandon. We've all seen the end result. I've said it before several times: There wasn't a single worthy new idea on display in any of these new episodes, including the specials - just rehashed concepts or ideas stolen - sorry, 'homaged' - from other sources.
