I've gotten a lot of comments recently asking me where and how start Classic Doctor Who so I thought with all the recent news that seems to going around as well that I'd make a video about it. For those wondering, the recent drama involving the unearthly child is a copyright dispute, from the son of the original writer of the script. He claims that not only do the bbc not have the right to the episode, they don’t have access to the word Tardis. In my personal opinion, this will not go anywhere. He did a similar thing about a decade ago. He couldn’t possibly win a legal battle against the bbc in this regard, and it’s questionable if his dad even had ownership of the scripts in the first place, as he was hired to write them. I started with the episode 1 of Series 1 of the 2005 Doctor Who The christmas specials definetly confused me but i finally got around to watch them after a series ends, simple, enjoyable and fantastic! I love this show

I really started with Rose, although my actual introduction to Who were snippets of individual Smith episodes (I remember watching a scene in Cold War), but the first actual episodes I watched in their entirety were Deep Breath and Dark Water. Now, I'm making my brother watch it in non-chronologycal order to kind of catch up for the 60th. He's a little confused, but he's loving it. I've been planning on starting with Classic Who, but I just haven't found the time. Also, btw, my brother doesn't like the new theme, although he likes all the previous NuWho ones. I love it. I don't know if I'm adding anything to the conversation, but I just wanted to comment this.

My 8 yr old son just saw 'Happiness Patrol' as his first classic story and loved it. I remember loving that one when it was first on TV when I was a kid. But yeah 'Remembrance of the Daleks' is the obvious introduction to classic 'Who' imo

Watching out of order is literally what I do; it is so clutch. However, it really stinks that, as an American, I have to go through so many hoops just to watch the funny blue box guy. I usually just watch Classic Who on Pluto TV. I really hope that Doctor Who in its entirety makes it to Disney+, but im so high on cope that I would take any mainstream streaming service. I personally started with Survival when exploring Classic Who which was certainly an unfortunate but fun place to start. Got really excited in seeing where it would go before searching up what came next.

Although I would recommend watching New Who by starting with Rose, I started with S5 and then went back to S1 and it was a good experience! Not a bad choice for younger folks (teenagers) who want to get into Doctor Who. Also, new Who is also on [HBO] Max

Hello, your channel is awesome, and I love watching your long videos just watched the 7 hour long video. Anyway I see that you love to answer doctor who unknown questions. I always wondered why the doctor uses glasses, like cant regeneration fix everything, and even if the regenerations random should at least one of their regenerations not need glasses. That's the one question I've always wondered while watching the show for so long. Sorry if it's a dumb question.

Hulu is Disney's (pre Disney+) streaming service so even with Disney now having exclusive distribution rights to it it should probably still be available there

I'll be interested to hear your approach, but I watched the entirety of New Who, then the all available episodes of Classic Who, then all the missing stories. Which did mean that my last catch-up story was the Space Pirates, so it holds a special place in my heart despite being objectively a bit naff.

Three years ago, I wanted to watch Doctor Who from the beginning. I've watch New Who before back in 2014 and I loved the show. Well, here in Germany is it not easy to get access to DW. I have ordered the whole DVD collection from the UK and watched chronological until the Power oft the Doctor. That was a journey! I never regret it, my English skills grows thanks Doctor Who, but it's not good enough for Big Finish. Is there a way to see subtitles by listening the audio drama in online applications? Greetings from Germany! I hope you guys can read this!

I watched doctor who in the most random order as a kid into my teen years because I starded off just watching whatever was on tv at the time which just happened to be series 7b, so my first episode of doctor who was the Bells of Saint John, then I watched the rest of series 7b, then went back somewhere and watched the show in this order series 3, 4, 6, the rest of 7, 5, 1, 2, then I just watched every series after 8 as they were coming out. Also somewhere in all of that I watched a decent chunk of season 7 with Jon Pertwee from the classic series and the tv movie. Ever since then I just watch the classic series in random chunks as I buy dvds and blu rays, I don't have any streaming services and am a physical media simp so yeah.

For a great jumping off point. The Robots of Death. Why? Because I just finished watching it again and it’s still brilliant. The character of Leela could easily come over as goofy or a bit cringe. Not in Louise Jameson’s hands though. I may need to rethink my choice for best companion.

My suggestion to someone looking to delve into the classic series would be to watch the Unearthly Child because of its importance as the first story and then pick one story for Doctors 1-7 and the movie.

@dwfan91 you failed to mention Pluto Tv has a dedicated channel for Classic Who.

On the topic of piracy, there is actually a legal precedent for the legitimate use of piracy as a method of media preservation. I think given Doctor Who's history with the BBC's questionable approach to archiving, you've got a solid case for pirating classic Who.

Ok not gonna lie the watching from episode one of classic in chronological order did strike a nerve with me. I've been Watching from Hartnell up to Pertwee and am currently on the first ever anniversary the 3 Doctors. Like watching something with over 1000 episodes like one piece, its rewarding because the buildups to big moments of a large series, along with the ability to physically see the filmmaking improve over time as the technology gets better is just something magical that really makes you feel a state of euphoria when you make it to the top of that mountain of content. And while I have caught up with One Piece and am still chugging through Doctor Who the real thing to ask is, are you a patient viewer that paces themselves, or are you someone who feels the need to binge everything they watch. The way I view every Classic Who Serial is like a Film. And cites like letterboxd list them as such. To me it's like crossing another part of an enormous film series off my watchlist amongst all the other films I have waiting for my viewing pleasure. Either way watch them how you want, but trust me, it hits different when you follow the way people back in the day would have been watching.
